They dont suck at all... They are good cheesesteaks... They use good meat, good Amoroso rolls. They are just quality and a bit above average. They are overpriced tho. BUT, the one thing I like about Pats and Geno's is their consistency, and their rolls are always fresh, no matter what time you go. I get it though, they have become a tourist trap, and they are ovepriced, so if you want to factor that in to donwgrade them, fine, but to say they "suck" is a bit absurd. And I have lived in South Philly for 38 years.

Philly native. Been to both recently. Growing up my dad always went to Genos because we were in South Philly. This is a great video because you break the stigma. Yes they are tourist traps but THATS THE POINT. Anyone who visits Philadelphia should definitely visit. And definitely go to Johns RP ; P
I wonder if social media is the only thing keeping places like this alive. Back in the day, historic restaurants that were once good but eventually the food started sucking and/or getting too expensive would just go out of business and would only live on as memories. Every time someone I know takes their first trip to Philly, they visit these places and post pictures on social media. It's almost "proof" they did indeed go to Philly.
They help keep each other in business by creating a manufactured rivalry with each other so tourists gotta come get one of both and the locals will support their chosen "team" no matter how mediocre they actually are.
The best Philly Cheesesteak in Philadelphia is a toss up between John of Roast Pork, Tony Luke's and D'Alessandros. D'Alesssandros finely dices the steak. The best bread on a Philly Cheesesteak is Tony Luke's. John of Roast Pork uses provolone instead of cheese wiz and surprisingly it tastes better. It's your personal choice but these are the 3 places with the highest ratings for Philly cheesesteak
@@uaeats For me between the two, definitely. Best in Philly no, but worth the experience. Just like Franklin BBQ is worth trying out. I say that as a bro born in PA, but raised in TX.
Hey UA. The Amoroso rolls definitely helps both sandwiches. I’ll agree with you that the steak needs to be chopped and cooked with the onions so you have a consistent bite. Wiz is wiz. Glad you went back. 👋🏽

Pat's is really good. That steak looks like every one I've ever had. People like to bag on the most well known places because it makes them seem to know what they're talking about, but that doesnt make them any better or worse than Jims, D'Alesandros, or John's Roast Pork. Ive tried a lot of steak spots and my personal favorite is Steve's.
Both are honestly terrible, but Pat's is less terrible. disclaimer: I'm not a PA resident and I strongly believe cheesesteaks should be American cheese. Pat's - 4/10 Geno's - 2/10 Need to make another trip to Philly as I feel like I barely scratched the surface of the Cheesesteak game.
I just want to thank you. Your videos have helped me with my menu concepts for my new restaurant. Because of you, i have added hot dogs to my menu with the housemade relish. Such a beautiful menu item from new jersey. I appreciate it.
This is a fair review. People act like these places are trash. They are the foundation everything else was built on. They are the standards. You can get higher quality meat, artisan bread, unique toppings and cheese but these two are the Adam and Eve of cheese steaks. Things evolve over time but I'm glad these two have stayed around. Yeah, I ate at Pat like about 42 years ago and it was the bomb. I’ll get a chance to go and try it again and see if it’s still good because what you just shown neither one of them look too good back in the day look way better than that and pats didn’t used to chop theirs. They used to make it like Gino’s got it and it was delicious and tender, and that was the first time I had cheese whiz, but I wouldn’t eat cheese whiz now we’ll see. Thanks again. Have a blessed one sir.🙋🏾♀️
I also grew up in that area. We ended up at those locations a few nights, late after hitting the bars. It was always better drunk, but you are correct, there are better steaks in Philly. Another good drunken food stop was on the way out of the city heading into Delaware County, Eddie's hotdogs on Calcon Hook & Hook Rd.
I love eating a lot of the chilies and peppers. I remember the first time I had a cheesesteak. It almost blew me away! It was a pizza variant. No place special, just a standard mom and pop place in the NE. Pizza, steak, cheese. When did God amend the Book of Genesis? There was also Jim's on South Street, Abner's if you are partying late night at Penn. But you got to eat the peppers like the pickles at Katz's!

I ate at both places on April 27th and definitely Pat’s was way better. The steak at Pats had a better taste and the quality as well. Oh, also the fries were crispy. Geno’s sandwich had no flavor at all. Below average. Their marketing was better with the signs and establishment but the steak sandwich was horrible. Pat’s for the win.
I've always wondered, who is the statue of the dude perched on top of that tower? Is it Paul Revere or Ben Franklin or Sam Adams or someone else? Interested to know
When I went to Philly, I wanted to try as many cheese steaks as I could while I was there to find the best one. So over two days I had 14 cheese steak sandwiches. John's Roast Pork has the best Cheese Steaks, but in the Geno's vs Pats; I'd say Pats had the better sandwich. Geno's in my opinion goes heavy on the cheese, and it overpowers everything else in the sandwich. Main complaint for Pats is it needs more salt. If you want the best though Johns Roast Pork. Not only does it taste better, but the roll is like twice the length of Geno or Pats, and it's well over 4x the steak.
Back in the 70s, when you needed something hot and greasy after drinking all night, these two spots were really the only game in town. That's how they became so well known. Today, many choices -- Angelo's and John's are top tier.
Fun Fact: Pat and Harry Olivieri The original cheesesteak was credited to Pat and Harry Olivieri, two brothers who ran a hot dog stand near South Philadelphia's Italian Market. Legend has it that in the 1930s, the brothers wanted to offer new sandwiches. Their new item was grilled beef and onions in a toasted roll.
I'll make my own in my Blackstone here in SoCal. I prefer chopped steak and not will done. Has to have some juice in it for me. Unfortunately I can't get those rolls here, Melaney from SoCal
UA Eats you need to do pizza. My favourite cities for pizza are New York - New Jersey, Chicago and New Haven, Connecticut. Favourite restaurants : John of Bleeker Street Pizza (NYC), Princes Pizza pepperoni slice (NYC), Sally's Pizza (New Haven), Brooklyn Squares (NJ), DiLorenzos Tomato Pies (Robben NJ) Delucias (Raritan, NJ) and Giordanos Pizza ( Chicago)
Yeah the Gino's I don't like the look of. Pats definitely looks better. I make my own philly cheese steaks at home, and I'll stick with my way lol but cool to watch. I've never had either that I remember. Thanks man
i agree with you UA. Geno's i thought was very bland with very little cheese flavor. i thought it tasted like straight up steak off the grill. I like mines diced and mixed with cheese for more cheesy flavor. I would like to try angelo's when I come back to visit philly.
They're the iconic originals in Philadelphia, but they're both equally terrible. They have been passed on the fly now by any number of superior cheesesteak places in both Philly and South Jersey. Pats and Genos pretty much cater to unknowing tourists and the drunk, weekend, late-night club crowd. Although, from your video, it did look like Pat's up their game a bit with the chopped leaner meat. Back in the day, they both used the slabs of meat like Genos and it was also grisly.

I agree with your review on every point. Pat's & Geno's are fine, but not great. I take visitors to try both places. It's a fun people watching thing to do and they usually know Pat's and Geno from the Food Channel or whatever. Pat's is the better of the two; Geno's really is consistently drier than I'd like and I'm not a fan of slab steaks.
I ate a Genos in 2014 while visiting the Jersey Shore and yes. I don’t even remember it being that great. Oh well, I will stick to Jersey Mikes here in Texas. Kick ass review!
I can't with Pat's or Geno's. I wouldn't tell anyone visiting not to try them, but they're mid at best, in my opinion. Are you still in Philly? Jim's Steaks on South just reopened this week! I'm not saying they're the best, but I used to live across the street, and they're my favorite. Have you reviewed Donkey's Place in Camden/Medford yet? It is a tad different from the traditional (the roll), but it is so good. Anthony Bourdain's favorite!
Also, from what I've heard, nobody orders regular cheese wiz in Philadelphia (the bright yellow cheese, search 'regular cheese wiz in Philadelphia'). Provolone is definitely the most preferred cheese if choosing between American, Wiz, or Provolone. I also want you to try another cheesesteak place called Steve’s Prince of Steaks, with sharp Provolone cheese and onions, you could also get the double-meat cheese, and Sunshine Sandwich Shop, with 'The Paulie', you can look for the menu on Yelp in one of the reviews there. @CreedK said in Bon Appétit's video titled "16 Philly Cheesesteaks in 12 Hours. Which Is the Best? | Bon Appétit": "That Woodrow's house cheese is exactly the kind of thing that more places should be doing. Regular cheese whiz is a perfect pairing for cheesesteaks because of its texture. But let's be real here, it's still a dogshit fake cheese product that has no business being in your digestive system on a regular basis (which is a problem if you like cheesesteaks and cheese fries)." You can download the extension "TH-cam Comment Reader" to easily search comments.
You are right on the money… one and done. Going to both is a lot of fun. But after that once… Of the two I prefer Pat’s Best cheesesteak I ever had, though, was at Mama’s Pizza in Bala Cnywd. And whatever you do, if you go there, don’t order the pizza!
I work 2 blocks from that corner and I've never been impressed by Pat's or Geno's. Jim's on the 400 block of South Street is probably the best touristy spot. The problem is, those places can be intimidating. You can go many places in Phillyland or South Jersey for awesome cheesesteaks and that's it. You can't go to NY, CA, or even Maryland for cheesesteaks. In Kansas, they would probably give you a 12 oz ribeye with bleu cheese on top.
History is history to get to know the culture of a specific thing got to start from the beginning. My first introduction to Philly cheese steak was genos but glad to add it to a food trip of cultured eats
Both stink, but Pats wins out of BOTH... Plus the fact 10 years ago, you got double the meat and onions for $11.00, the meat would fall out of it at Pats.. Always chop the damn steak up
I'm in Philly often and have ate at both places it's a good sandwich at both places but just not near the best cheesecake in Philly .... Don't forget to check out Redding terminal market be safe and eat well to all 👍👍
I have watched several reaction videos for Pat's and Geno's, and it looks as though the quality and love aren't there anymore. I haven't had the privilege of visiting the East Coast, so I can only critique them both from what I see and hear the TH-camrs say about them. The older generation of workers has either retired or died off, so, the younger ones need to step it up and continue providing the quality of service that both cheese steak sandwiches initially had. Please don't lose what your parents and grandparents worked so hard for!!!

"That Woodrow's house cheese is exactly the kind of thing that more places should be doing. Regular cheese whiz is a perfect pairing for cheesesteaks because of its texture. But let's be real here, it's still a dogshit fake cheese product that has no business being in your digestive system on a regular basis (which is a problem if you like cheesesteaks and cheese fries)."

Love Jim’s of South Street!! The Best!!
Had Pats the one time i was in Philly, it was good. Got a Tony Lukes in the airport and it was excellent!
You are right on the money… one and done. Going to both is a lot of fun. But after that once…
Of the two I prefer Pat’s
Best cheesesteak I ever had, though, was at Mama’s Pizza in Bala Cnywd.
I live a few blocks from there and Mikes BBQ is the place to try.
History is history to get to know the culture of a specific thing got to start from the beginning. My first introduction to Philly cheese steak was genos but glad to add it to a food trip of cultured eats
So both places had great bread, but Geno's "kneads" to step up their game a little more
I was going to share a dumb pun, but I realized it was half baked
Genos cost less "dough" to buy!!
@@johnmacdonald3070 Geno's doesn't look the least bit appetizing.
I like how pat's shows the prices with the taxes included
I laughed so hard when you unwrapped the geno’s sandwich
Both stink, but Pats wins out of BOTH... Plus the fact 10 years ago, you got double the meat and onions for $11.00, the meat would fall out of it at Pats.. Always chop the damn steak up
I'm in Philly often and have ate at both places it's a good sandwich at both places but just not near the best cheesecake in Philly .... Don't forget to check out Redding terminal market be safe and eat well to all 👍👍
It's 'Reading', not Redding.
I actually dig the bag from Geno's, has the same color scheme as the Flyers.
Pat's is legit. Geno's tastes like a Hot/Lean Pocket. There you go........
UA you should have done a review of Jimmy on South Street
Jims just opened back up, they was closed for about 2 years or so.
Hot pockets Philly steak & cheese is better cuh
Bro, you put out so much good content. How can we get your subs up???
I have watched several reaction videos for Pat's and Geno's, and it looks as though the quality and love aren't there anymore. I haven't had the privilege of visiting the East Coast, so I can only critique them both from what I see and hear the TH-camrs say about them. The older generation of workers has either retired or died off, so, the younger ones need to step it up and continue providing the quality of service that both cheese steak sandwiches initially had. Please don't lose what your parents and grandparents worked so hard for!!!
Drive just a little bit further south to Claymont Steaks in DE😊
