any tips on how to mitigate stick drift? is it just dust and oils etc getting in there over time? if so would clean hands and always covering for dust help prolong a healthy controller?
It's the design of the trandsucer/joystick that's the problem and that didn't change. Every time you press down on it, you smash the contacts. Do that several hundred/thousand times and the contacts start to deform and create electrical resistance. The contacts also wear down over time, creating different resistance. All controllers with this type of trandsucer will drift at some point. Keeping things clean around the area you play in, might help mitigate dust, which would help limit drift. I don't know that there's much else you could do, short of actually cleaning occasionally. Cleaning definitely works, but Meta made these even harder to clean than the Quest 2 controllers.
@@ImaRainbow thank you for such a detailed response, buy press down on it are you mainly talking about using them as a button (such as push to talk) or just moving them as a joystick. (Also thanks for your old demeo videos, they helped me beat all the chapters as of yesterday) :)
Yes, there's a button in the center of the joy stick. There's also two sets of very fine contacts that change the resistance as the stick is moved. Repeated button presses cause those contacts to bend a little bit over time, which means the resistance doesn't stay consistent. That's one major cause of drift. Hope that's clear.
Thank you so much! I was scared when my character had trouble moving in Population One. At first I thought it was an internet connection problem. I lowered the internet speed for the neighbors I provide internet to, but it was still the same 😅. I then thought it was damaged and I would have to buy a new controller 😱. I first looked to see if it was a hardware problem, followed some tutorials on undocking the controller and re-docking it using the Horizon app, but nothing. When I did a calibration that appears for the controllers I saw that the pointer on the right control looked like it had Parkinson's disease. And that's when I looked for how to fix the joystick and found your video. You've saved my (virtual) life. Thank you!!!!!
So I need some help with this I bought the quest 3s like a week ago and I got on it today but for some reason my stick calibration is all Jammed so when I move the stick left it doesn’t go fully to the left so it makes me slow but it’s only for the left controler
It sounds like controller drift. Due to the design of the transducers, it can happen at any time. It's probably not "dirty" enough to need contact cleaner, but if you get the thumbstick cap off and blow some compressed air into it, this might help.
thanks! i spilled milk on my controller and took it apart to clean it, but i could not get the thumbstick back on for the life of me. i almost cried cause i spent so much money on this game. BUT YOU SAVED ME THANK YOUUUU!!!

my unit is less than 3 months old right stick when i try to calibrate is really hard to do the big circles, also holding arms out straight it has a wobble and pulls a little down right sound like this issue?
My left thumbstick started doing this within 10 days of purchase. Its a little ridiculous. They need to fix this. Im debating returning the whole unit to best buy but that seems wasteful as the rest of the unit functions well. Sometines the devil you know is better than the one you dont. This seems so common that im not confident a new controller wouldnt also develop drift. I cant imagine how frustrated id feel after going through this twice. Meta said they would send me a replacement. Seems like ill be going this route in the future.
It's a design defect. Meta used a crap analog transducer instead of a hall transducer. I though they would've learned from all the Q2 drift issues. 1 in 5 out of 20million plus sold. That's a lot of drifting controllers. I was very disappointed when I tore mine apart and found the exact same transducer from the Q2.
@danbarb9728 Sorry, haven't laid hands on the pro controllers, so I can't tell you. However, once the warranty runs out, cleaning and eventually replacing the transducer will keep you controller running.
I opened my controller up like the video but now my a Button wont make clicking sound and wont push down Tried it put and non of the Buttons work except the oculus home button
My problem was never drift, but jitter and dead zones. Spraying cleaner into the pot module from the outside didn't work. I ended up taking the pot modules apart, cleaning the resistive film inside directly, and then putting a tiny bit of extra bend in the spring contacts that ride across it. Also, I lubricated the film with a tiny amount of Deoxit brand cailube, a lubricant for plastic contacts. This fixed my Quest 2 controllers for good, and today the same damn thing has started up on my Q3 controllers not even a year old. Sigh.. once more into the breach.
Rebuilding the transducer is good way to correct the drift. The design of the transducers themselves are basic and not meant for heavy sustained use. That's why the fail so often. th-cam.com/video/mDLT1LdX_ag/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for letting me know about the transducer ill make sure to never use it again! It really helped me out. But yeah had to let everyone know why a device that costs half a grand is so fragile cause the people who made it are pigs.
While I wouldn't start calling anyone names, it does seem that Meta could've made a better decision. There is certainly room to install a hall effect transducer. th-cam.com/video/JppuhNVBZm8/w-d-xo.html
this is an actual piece of shit. I swear to god they're making controllers bad on purpose, I have this cheap 3rd party xbox controller I got from amazon and it's never drifted, compared to this expensive, on-brand "premium" controller that costs me 60-70 dollars now. Not worth the upgrade. I'm going to just wait for Valve to release a new headset and drop meta entirely. What good is a shiny new headset with improved features if the controllers you use to work the damn thing barely functioning?

That's all I did. Some folks have reported that they've been able to "stuff" it back in without doing it, but I think that stresses the transducer.
