I'm normally pretty confident taking things apart, but I would never have had the nerve to open up my Quest controller without this. Simple, logical, confident. Got me through the whole thing with ease. Thanks and nicely done!
Most appreciated my dude. Awesome step by step tutorial. Was able to replace my transducer, and fixed my grip not springing back with a little superglue (plastic had sheared) 😁
Don't you love it when someone on TH-cam isn't showing you something they learned on TH-cam and actually knows what they're doing? I was hesitant to open it up but watching someone else go through it first is always nice.
I've watched a lot of tutorials like this one to repair some of my consoles and controllers but yours is so far the best. You take your time, you go step by step showing us every single little thing and you talk and describe every step with all the details. 10/10 mate. Thank you so much.@@ImaRainbow
hey I'm having problems in the 9:52 part, i made sure i removed all the screws (the 4 battery one's too) and I'm doing the same motion but it won't budge, any idea?
If you're sure you've removed all the screws, then it should roll apart. Don't pry that part with anything, cause the plastic can break. Make sure you're fingers in the same position I have mine when you roll it apart. Hope this helps.
I was absolutely terrified doing this, i may have taken a drink at 3am and spilled a bit of water into my right controllers thumbstick, and it believed it was permanently being held down, meaning that button was inoperable and drained battery about 3x faster, but i could still use the thumbstick, i finally caved and decided i needed a new controller and saw a replacement kit, was terrified, but you got me through it way easier than expected, and I am overwhelmingly thankful to have it back again fully functional!!! thank you so much, it was still a daunting task due to my own nerves, but it went incredibly smoothly and with the video was a lot less nervous and difficult than i thought
Thank you so much for this extremely well made video. Everything from your sticky note idea, to your description on which way to twist pieces to get them apart proved valuable. Last night my left grip button completely broke. Using your video I was able to safely disassemble the controller, find the broken piece, superglue it and troubleshoot to modify the guide post for the grip button, and ultimately fix my controller. 2 hours of work was a heck of a lot better than spending $75 and waiting a week to get a new one. Thank you!
@@ImaRainbow Sticky note was a great idea, but I put letters where each screw went, then flipped a stick note over and wrote the letters in a list next to the gummy part of the paper and put each screw on the gummy strip next to the letter. Made it so simple and the screws didn't roll around at all.
I love this vid. I ran into an issue. I put the new thumb stick in and when I go to check the dead zone it's all messed up. Says it's pointing to the bottom right when it's supposed to be neutral. Anyway to fix that?
I used this video to replace the transducer for my sons oculus controller. Wow , thank you, we did manage to fix it and your instructions were great. The only criticism I have is the ribbon cable. So I’m a non experience with electronics or taking things apart , it took me a good little while to figure out what switch I was flicking to release the ribbon. A close up or even a better verbal description of how to do that would have been great. That and dropping a screw ( which stuck to the trigger magnet and I was searching the floor lol) was my only 2 hicupps in the whole operation. Learned a lot and loved all the tips. Thanks for the confidence boost.
Thank you! What your video does that none of the other ones seem to show is to remove the panel on the handle that covers the ribbon cable connecting the power to the main board. With that bit this is a relatively easy fix. Thanks again so much!
15:55 Hello! I’d like to express my gratitude for creating this tutorial. I’ve successfully resolved the joystick problem. However, I’m still encountering issue with my X button, it requires more force than usual to register a click. I’ve viewed your written note regarding the rubber cover and mechanical contact, as well as your explanation in the video about the contact becoming stuck and causing functionality problems. Despite this, I haven’t been able to determine how to address the issue. Would applying contact cleaner to the rubber cap resolve the problem? Additionally, if I disassemble the switch internals with the rubber cap, can I safely reassemble everything afterward?
Underneath the rubber cap is plastic "plunger" that has a conductive face. When the button is pressed, the plunger makes contact with the printed circuitry on the cca and should register the button press. Anything between the plunger and the circuit can cause the contact not to register. If you carefully lift up the rubber boot, you can clean the plunger and the circuit with some contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol using a cotton swap. Make sure that you don't leave any cotton strands behind. I hope this helps.
This is the only video I've found on YT that wasn't afraid to show it all, including the ribbon cable in the handle that had been so much more difficult when trying to follow other videos (before you showed how to disassemble the grip further! Thank you!
Your tutorial was amazing! Glad you included all the little details like rotating parts of the battery compartment, I would probably have never realized it could separate like that!
I was attempting to follow another video that i thought was decent at explaining, but your video nailed all the details that the other one missed! I will be trying the disassemble later again today.
Thank you for this amazing tutorial. I was able to replace my joystick module and reassemble the controller after following your steps. No more drift and the controller works like new again.
I have used this video 2 times now and it is superb thanks for this. Absolutely perfect how to. This is the gold standard that all how tos should aspire to be. Confidence building instruction with excellent narration.
Thank you, this is the best Quest 2 controller teardown video on youtube. The grip button broke a couple weeks ago on my right controller. This video shows how a can access the broken mechanism with minimal disassembly. No need to disconnect ribbon cables.
That is great to hear. I love a success story. I'd be interested to hear how the replacement joystick holds it over time. Mine's going on 4 months without issues, I expect I'll have to start cleaning again at some point, but so far, so good.
Thanks to you I was able to fix stick drift by replacing the transducer. The quest controller seems complicated to dis/reassemble, but it's in fact rather easy if you're just careful enough. Cheers!
Outstanding. Followed this in order to replace both transducers once controller drift became unmanageable. Saved a fortune and could not have done it without this video. Thank you very much.
Really awesome tutorial! There were a few things I struggled with like how hard it was to take off the back of the controller with the "rolling motion", but I was able to install it just fine! And I don't know if it might've been something with the transducer I got or what, but it was a little bit offset from the center according to the system. Not drifting through, just a bit offset. Luckily I could easily fix that by increasing the dead zone and I'm good! So yeah, thanks for this tutorial!
Really helpful video, I followed it to disassemble the joystick and then followed the ifixit tutorial on how to open up the joystick housing and cleaned it off. Now the controller is fully functional without drifting.
To everyone struggling with getting the ring screws out with the t5 bit in the kit: The problem is the ring is in the way of the screwdriver, so you're coming at an angle. The only way I could get them out was to take the bit out of the driver, hold the bit with needle nose pliers and turn with those (while supplying force into the screw from the back of the bit with your finger) If you have an angled screwdriver with or that can fit a t5 bit, use that. Otherwise, it's the plier + fingers
The issue was that the ring screws are definitely smaller than T5 on my controller (maybe T4, but I didn't measure), and the kit I bought only included 2 T5s. My own screwdriver kit I've had for a long time only goes down to T6. I took a metal file and lightly filed the edges of one of the kit's T5s, and then it actually fit into the ring screws. I call that a win.
The best video out there on tearing down the quest 2 controller. Managed to replace the stick on my left controller, and wouldn't have been able to do it without this video. Some of the screws were hard to remove, and I had to be patient as I was starting to damage the screws, probably because the screwdriver that came with the kit wasn't the best quality. Either way, all done and working amazing. Thank you!
Fantastic! This video was so well done and covered every detail perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. I just saved a nice chunk of money, and have happy children :)
Hi, this was my first teardown and assembly of a device that I have ever done. Thank you so much for making it easy to do this, I also fixed my joystick drift while I was digging around in there so thanks!
Thank you thank you thank you. I was following another tutorial which was so poor it had left me with a fully dismantled controller with no assembly instructions. You saved the day. Awesome stuff.
Thank you so much! I took it apart because my trigger button wasn't going all the way down and I found a random screw just stuck on the magnet. I took it out and put the controller back together and it worked perfectly.

Same size screw, different size torx. @Robert Stewart put this parts list together. You might find it useful. I made a parts list as I disassembled the controller. Incase you ever want it for reference...These are the screw sizes: A. (2) 4mm long screws attaching the circle plate to the sensor cover, B. (9) 5mm long screws (5) are in the circle plate and (4) are in the battery case. C: (1) 17mm long screw. This is the "silver" screw just below the joystick and mates the circle plate, circuit board and grip's screw boss. D: (1) 11mm long screw. This is the "black" screw to the right of the top button (at least on the left controller) and does the same job as C. E: (4) 12 mm long circuit board screws (black). These all attach the circuit board to the grip's screw boss
hey i just want to say thank you for making this video i ended up fixing my controllers because turns out there was a loose cable and it took me around a couple hours to fix it and the tools i got costed me around 15 ish dollars but still way better than buying another pair of controllers for 100 dollars not including import taxes and other things so thank you!!
im stuck at 9:20, that piece definentally doesn't just "pop off" and i almost ripped the ribbon wire in half then realised i was taking off the entire thing, my hand hurts so much, even tried using a tool that came with the kit i got (trying to replace the anologs) and i couldn't get it, is there any other way to get it off?
Double check to make sure that all the screws are out. It sounds like one is still in some where. To get the handle apart, try holding it like I do in the video, and slightly roll your hands toward each other, so the right hand piece pops loose at the bottom of the handle.
I watched another video yesterday to change the joystick of my left controller. Yours is a bit more precise, though I managed to do the repair. I knew that the bigger ribbon cable was covered, but I didn't take it off. The way you show it, makes it a lot easier to connect the cable again. I had to make two attempts because I hardly could move the cable while covered.
The rubber cover just lifts up. It's not attached, just to keep dust/sweat from getting to the contact. The most common things that happen are too much cleaner, causes the button under the cover to stick to the circuit card and some part of the rubber cover gets between the contact and circuit card.
Thank you bro. My stick drift got so bad that it was unfixable, say for replacing the thumbstick. Thank you for this video, it really helped me! Got my controller working as good as new.
I used your video to repair my controller which disconnected constantly with strong movements. I welded the GND pin that connect the battery with the PCB plate. Muchas gracias 🎉
BETTER video than the one I watched that didnt show the trick for the trigger ribbon, ended up breaking the latch off so now I get to buy a new controller. I have saved this vid so next time there is stick drift, Ill use THIS vid to actually fix it. CHEERS!
Thanks a ton for this guide man. It helped a ton. Originally I thought I only had stick drift in only one of my controllers only to find out I had stick drift in both of my controllers. I have disassembled my gaming consoles many times and my console controllers many times but disassembling the oculus quest 2 controller is next level. I probably would've struggled a lot more if it weren't for your vid. Thanks again.
I just finished replacing my girlfriends sons joysticks. They had started to do the dreaded drift. Thanks for the video. Very easy to follow step by step. I even used the idea to draw where all the screws go under the faceplate. Excellent work my friend and thanks again!
This tutorial was extremely helpful, thanks a lot! Now I completely fixed my stick drift and the whole process was really easy. My screwdriver was way too bulky to get that one screw underneath the trigger, so I detached the trigger (if someone who reads this comment wants to detach the trigger too - it can be removed by sliding its metallic rod to the side, note that it slides in only one way and also that its spring will become loose once you'll remove the PCB). And my apartment unfortunately doesn't have any grounding, so making an ESD-protected workspace wasn't possible, but fortunately the controller did not broke (if someone who reads this comment also wants to disassemble some semiconductor electronics in non-ESD-protected environment - please reconsider, it's unnecessarily risky and it's way better to find a friend or someone else who has access to a place with grounding, ESD straps are cheap and are easy to get, also wireless ESD protection is a myth - straps and other devices should connect directly to a grounded conductor via a wire)
THANK YOU Mr Rainbow. I have just followed your 2 guides while suffering a terrible flu, to please my son so he could get back to his new Zombie game. Walking Dead. I though I might be able to take it apart but I was sure i was going to f.. up the reassembling but HEY it worked. My Son is happy and I'm happy to get back in bed feeling sorry for myself. I would not have been able to do it without your excellent guide. The only thing that struggled to see & understand was what direction to flip the latch to losen the ribbon cable. And I also had the Magnet "stealing" one of the screws. Thanks again for taking time sharing your knowledge. Happy New Year Rainbow 🙂
@@ImaRainbow My Son is "Dancing" around on the floor right behind me, playing Blade & Sorcery" He's VERY grateful and wants me to say Hello and Thanks a million 🙂 Happy New Year Rainbow Man
AMAZING video. my son broke his joystick and this helped me replace it for less than 20 bucks rather than buying a $150 controller. hes so happy you just saved my wallet. you got yourself a new sub
Great help thanks. Quest 2 left thumbstick suddenly failed for left movement. Happily I had just bought spare thumbstick transducers for my Quest 1 ( A much more difficult task to replace I think). No problem getting black top disk off, found only 2 tiny dabs of black glue. On reassembly the joystick worked but left hand tracking was well wonky. Dived in again and found the antenna strap was at a slight angle at the left antenna connector, Put it on properly this time and now all good. Thanks
Thanks so much, today I cracked just the outer shell of my controller ring, and decided to replace it with another older controller's ring I had. This made it so much easier.
recently when i went to grab my left controller the bottom middle trigger button was just flopping around and wouldn't spring back out. i had a old destroyed remote and with the help of your tutorial, was able to swap the entire plate that housed the trigger button! super huge help and now i have a almost like new working controller to show for it. Thanks again!
Great video followed the instructions and it now work’s perfectly 🎉 the only thing I changed is I took a picture of the controller with the black face removed, printed it and simply stuck the screws where they belonged in the controller. Simple simple!
I'm having alot of trouble taking off the outer plastic bit with the trigger (when you say to just roll it a bit) at 9:47, you say it would pop off afterwards but i have had it getting stuck on the side opposite the grip button, any ideas on how to get it off? Please Help!!
Best I can tell you is to pay attention to how I have my hands, try and duplicate that, then roll them apart. Most of the pressure will transfer to your thumbs and the pieces should come apart.
I dont have the best eyesight, but at 12:12 that help so much. I was stressing out that I wouldn't be able to see which screws and stuff to do. Ty so much 💓
My dad used to say that you can fix anything with the right tools and the know-how. With your guidance this fix was very easy and my own kid now has a controller that doesn't have joystick drift. Thank you so much!
After recently buying a Q2 and getting the dreaded stick drift, I knew I'd have to do this myself but really didn't want to. But this video makes it seem really easy if you're just patient and calm, I've ordered replacement sticks and am going to replace both of them tomorrow!
I bought the tool kit but when I lift the top part of the controller with all the screws for some reason the two top screws are smaller than the rest of the screws, those are the only screws I need to remove but the t5 bit doesn't seem to fit. So would I need to get a t4 bit?
I haven't run into any with smaller screws, but a few folks have reported something similar. You might need the t4 is the next smaller size, so it's a reasonable bet that's the the one you'll need. Good luck.
for months i have had to play "walking dead" without the ability to run. your step by step guide is the best one on youtube. i was able to replace my left stick component and can now run again.
Thank you very much! My Sons controller had a battery go bad, it no longer turned on. After your video, a "deep clean", its up and going. (I had him do it, he is super stoked and playing it right now.) Thank you for sharing your awesome tutorial! Shared, liked, commented, and Subscribed.
Thank you so much my man, my controller developed terrible drift really quickly to the point were all the way forward there was no input this helped me replace the part, thank you
Thank you for this great video, I was going to buy a new controller due to stick drift and movement issue but after watching your tutorial I decided to give it a go replacing the stick. Followed your step by step guide and success my controller is working perfectly again 😊. You are a credit to TH-cam
Thank you very much! I turned the air blue doing it, but I did manage to replace the faulty thumbstick with a new one thanks to this video. Thank you again for the video! Liked and subscribed.
Thanks so much thos saved me $200 for new controlers. This is the best video i was nervous but was able to fix both controllers now they dont have stick drift! And my son is happy so am i thanks again!
I watched some other videos before yours, and let me say this, you are amazing! You made it soooo much easier to rebuild, and good news, it did the trick! Wonderful job sir!
Hello, thank you for the video c: i managed to replace the thumbstick. however, the ribbon connector at 10:17 came off with the ribbon. how do i glue it back?
That’s not a glue it back type of thing. You’re going to need a micro soldering/hot air workstation to solder on a new connector. Or replace the entire board. Just glueing it back in place won’t re-establish the connections between the pins on the connector and the pins on the board. It would be wise to seek professional help.
I really need your help. I love your video. It was way better than anyone else's but that little tiny screw that's by the little choice to button the one that's holding the joystick down. The one that was in a bad spot I stripped that. How do I get it out
Remain calm. You'll need a pair of small needle nose pliers, probably not bigger than 3 or 4 inches long. Carefully, grip the sides of the screw and turn it counter clockwise. It'll be slow going, but you'll be able to work the screw out. To replace it, you'll likely need to go to a hardware store and buy a similar sized screw. Hope that helps.
Thank you thank you THANK YOU! The best compliment I can give you is that this tutorial is better than the one that iFixIt provides because they are so good and thorough but the part where yours excels at is that damn ribbon cable!! They didn’t instruct us to take the other piece off which made that astronomically more impossible. I was about to give up until I watched your video and you showed us to take apart the other part which made the ribbon part sooooo much easier to take apart. Thank you so very much for this. I really appreciate it 😊 especially you showing yourself putting it all back together. I couldn’t have done this without this video.
Are you talking about the latch for the ribbon cable connector? If so, the pressure that applies is needed to insure a proper electrical connection and keep the ribbon from sliding loose. Without it, there's no guarantee that everything will work correctly. As a stop gap, you could use a small piece of electrical tape to hold the ribbon in the connector. www.fixmyoculus.com may have 2nd hand controller boards available or you could find one on ebay.
hey so i need help with the 2 slanted screws. For the one on the right side i accidently screwed too much and now the screw has a circle. Anything i can do?
You've striped it out, so the driver won't work. You can get a hold of it with some very fine needle nose pliers and work it out slowly. That's worked for me in the past. Good luck.
Thank you for your video, I am replacing a broken ring flex cable and the rc cable with umcc connector look as if it was just soldered onto the ring, do you think I should be able to just solder it back? Or is this a special part?
Provided the solder pad is intact on for the shield and center conductor, it's a fairly easy solder job. You will need a very fine tip for the center conductor, most likely.
Thank you for the excellent video. My son's A button isn't always responding, will I need to strip the controller all the way or is it possible to fix it without doing so. The button feels like the other buttons when pressing but only responds when pushing down really hard. Thanks 😊
You'll probably need to pull it apart, since that's the only way to get at the buttons. It sounds like there might be something between the conductive pad on the bottom of the button and the circuit card traces below the button. Anything, including a piece of hair or built up sweat (not uncommon) can prevent the two from making proper conduct.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! My joystick was Broken, but this was a helpful tutorial how to detach and attach these things! Again, thanks for making this tutorial.
thank you, I fixed mine, won't be able to disabled again... my screwdriver damaged the screws😅, it was sweat inside the board under the x and y buttons, I just cleaned and it's working again 😊
Your video is amazing! It made replaying the joystick easy. I have saved it just in case I need to replace another one! Makes the job a lot less stressful! Thank you so much for sharing. You blessed my day!
Thank you for this great video. I have a front trigger that doesnt come out completely anymore. Any advice how i can fix that? Now it gives a signal that it is triggered all the time. Regards Dirk
There's a spring that's supposed to keep that trigger "out". If one side of the spring is out of position, it will prevent the trigger from opening fully. You might want to look for that. Also, the center pin that holds the spring, will occasionally work itself out. Good luck.
Awesome video. My controller is working again. Thank you. There are 2 things I would do differently, although, I get this is a tear down and rebuild video, but, people aren't doing that just to do it. They are fixing the thumb stick. So glossing over things until the end like make sure your buttons are good, or make sure you swap the spring thing on the thumbstick need to be in the middle of the video, not the end. I was almost reassembled when I realized the x bottom was stuck down, and all the way back reassembled again, when you mentioned the spring under the stick. I don't even have one of those it is still on the old stick. If all it does is register that I am touching the stick, then I do not feel like taking it back apart for a 3rd time. The new part fixed the drift that makes me walk backwards and messes up all the menus. Thanks once again.
Thank you so much for the video, it was easy step by step, what happened was that my right controller had a problem with the top trigger, and it wasn’t fully responding so it used some alcohol and and put it back together and it works now.😀😀😀
Great video for hank you so much. My daughter broke her grip button not the main trigger the lower one and I took it apart thinking it would be a spring knocked out of place but no it’s a little broken price of plastic like a little plastic hinge holding it so in order to fix it I need a new left controller shell. And it’s actually just one piece of the lower shell I don’t even need the hole thing. So I’ll buy a broken one on eBay I guess and use it for parts to fix this. But great video you helped me not break it.
If the surface I'm gonna use is made of wood with a metal frame should I use a different surface or do I just need to keep the controllers away from the frame?
An unlaminated piece of wood makes a reasonably safe esd surface. Touch the metal on the table before touching the controller. That should help dissipate any charge you've built up. Plastic, glass, paper, cloth are all bad esd surfaces. A flexible neoprene mousepad works well too, that's something a lot of folks have on hand. Hope that helps.
this helped me a lot to get my right controller working again. (slight corrosion on one of the connectors, fixed by gingerly scrubbing it with isoprop. really wasnt as finicky as i feared. lol great, detailled video!
What screw driver bits are needed? I can figure it out after the fact but I need to order them from Amazon so I want to ensure I get everything I need. I couldnt remove the screws for those under the the sticker with the star drives I had
Outstanding video! I forgot to make sure dual ribbon cables were on top of the circuit board before screwing down then made another mistake, not rechecking buttons after reassembling so had to go back and remove circuit board again lol. I found it was easier to hold buttons in controller and slide the circuit board into them. Again, excellent video. Thank you!
Working on a non conductive surface is a good start. Unvarnished wood, rubber mat or mouse pad, rubber bath mat, wood cutting board, are all good things to work on. If you don't have a ground strap, try not to wear clothing that'll build up a static charge, no polyester. Touch some unpainted metal with both hands, a pot or pan will work, immediately before working on the controller. That'll help dissipate any charge you might've already built up. These will probably get you by.
i followed your instructions and it worked great !, 10/10 instruction although the lights were flashing before i put any screws back in but now that its all back together the lights don't flash and it doesn't respond. could a misaligned screw mess this up or could i have accident fried it somehow putting the screws back in?
You'll want to verify that you didn't swap one of the longer screws for a shorter screw. If you've got a metal screw impacting your circuit board, that could cause a problem. Also, check and make sure that the ribbon cable is seated correctly in both the connectors. All the ribbon cables. Hope that helps.
I'm normally pretty confident taking things apart, but I would never have had the nerve to open up my Quest controller without this. Simple, logical, confident. Got me through the whole thing with ease. Thanks and nicely done!
Glad I could help. Happy gaming!

Glad I could help you. Thanks for watching and I'll keep the tips in mind.
Thank you!
What your video does that none of the other ones seem to show is to remove the panel on the handle that covers the ribbon cable connecting the power to the main board.
With that bit this is a relatively easy fix.
Thanks again so much!
I made one of those videos til I actually figured out the handle could be disassemble. Glad I was able to help.
Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Your tutorial was amazing! Glad you included all the little details like rotating parts of the battery compartment, I would probably have never realized it could separate like that!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching, I appreciate the support.
I was attempting to follow another video that i thought was decent at explaining, but your video nailed all the details that the other one missed! I will be trying the disassemble later again today.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this amazing tutorial. I was able to replace my joystick module and reassemble the controller after following your steps. No more drift and the controller works like new again.
Glad to hear it. I'm happy you were able to fix your controller.
Same here. My 12 yr old just watch your video and replaced his joystick module in under an hour. Thanks!
@@jorgevasquez1055 Glad I could help.
I am struggling around 9:58, and can’t get that price that you said would be easy to get off off. Any tips?
Make sure you got all four of the screws out. That's usually the hold up. Also, try to duplicate my finger positions when you roll the piece off.
I have used this video 2 times now and it is superb thanks for this. Absolutely perfect how to. This is the gold standard that all how tos should aspire to be. Confidence building instruction with excellent narration.
Glad I was able to help you, help yourself. Enjoy that rebuilt controller.
Thank you, this is the best Quest 2 controller teardown video on youtube. The grip button broke a couple weeks ago on my right controller. This video shows how a can access the broken mechanism with minimal disassembly. No need to disconnect ribbon cables.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching and liking the video. Have a great day!
Thank you for this. I was able to carefully complete the joystick replacement in under 2 hours. Left controller is now great!
Cheers!
I'm happy I was able to help you along. Happy gaming!
Outstanding. Followed this in order to replace both transducers once controller drift became unmanageable. Saved a fortune and could not have done it without this video. Thank you very much.
Great to hear! Thanks so much for watching. Happy gaming!
Sound like you got through it just fine. Great job on fixing it yourself! Glad I could assist.
Really helpful video, I followed it to disassemble the joystick and then followed the ifixit tutorial on how to open up the joystick housing and cleaned it off. Now the controller is fully functional without drifting.
Glad it helped
Best Quest2 controller disassembly video I've found yet.
Thank you very much. Hope it was helpful.
Thanks a lot! I've had major stick drift issues but after buying the kit and watching your video my controller is like brand new!
Glad I could help!
To everyone struggling with getting the ring screws out with the t5 bit in the kit:
The problem is the ring is in the way of the screwdriver, so you're coming at an angle. The only way I could get them out was to take the bit out of the driver, hold the bit with needle nose pliers and turn with those (while supplying force into the screw from the back of the bit with your finger)
If you have an angled screwdriver with or that can fit a t5 bit, use that. Otherwise, it's the plier + fingers
Thanks for helping out.
Use t4 for the top 2 screws near the ring
I knew this would be a problem from watching videos so I got a set with a bendable extension bar. Works a treat
Brilliant video, so glad I watched this first before tearing into it although I did mangle the band screws getting them out!
Thank you!
Glad you able to fix it. Thanks so much for the kind words and for watching. Happy Gaming!
Fantastic! This video was so well done and covered every detail perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. I just saved a nice chunk of money, and have happy children :)
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, this was my first teardown and assembly of a device that I have ever done. Thank you so much for making it easy to do this, I also fixed my joystick drift while I was digging around in there so thanks!
You're welcome! Glad I could help.
You are a saver! Could not do it without this video!
Thanks.
Thank you thank you thank you. I was following another tutorial which was so poor it had left me with a fully dismantled controller with no assembly instructions. You saved the day. Awesome stuff.
Yep, gotta be able to reassemble! Glad I could help.
A lot more simple than I thought it would be, thanks for the tutorial!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! I took it apart because my trigger button wasn't going all the way down and I found a random screw just stuck on the magnet. I took it out and put the controller back together and it worked perfectly.
Happy to help.

I've gotten sporadic reports that some of the screws heads are T4, rather than T5. Same size screw, different size torx.
@Robert Stewart put this parts list together. You might find it useful.
I made a parts list as I disassembled the controller. Incase you ever want it for reference...These are the screw sizes:
A. (2) 4mm long screws attaching the circle plate to the sensor cover,
Happy to help.
im stuck at 9:20, that piece definentally doesn't just "pop off" and i almost ripped the ribbon wire in half then realised i was taking off the entire thing, my hand hurts so much, even tried using a tool that came with the kit i got (trying to replace the anologs) and i couldn't get it, is there any other way to get it off?
Double check to make sure that all the screws are out. It sounds like one is still in some where. To get the handle apart, try holding it like I do in the video, and slightly roll your hands toward each other, so the right hand piece pops loose at the bottom of the handle.
I watched another video yesterday to change the joystick of my left controller. Yours is a bit more precise, though I managed to do the repair. I knew that the bigger ribbon cable was covered, but I didn't take it off. The way you show it, makes it a lot easier to connect the cable again. I had to make two attempts because I hardly could move the cable while covered.
Glad I could help!
hey this is an amazing video and I'm so grateful for the help but at 16:10 how do I get into the rubber and fix my buttons if they don't work
The rubber cover just lifts up. It's not attached, just to keep dust/sweat from getting to the contact. The most common things that happen are too much cleaner, causes the button under the cover to stick to the circuit card and some part of the rubber cover gets between the contact and circuit card.
Hey the ribbon cable at 10:25 I accidentally dented it but no hole it should be ok or I need to replace ? It works fine
If it's intact, it should work fine.
@@ImaRainbow ok thanks for the help of the video helped alot
Great video well done you helped me clean up my sons controllers. Nothing damaged works like new he says.
Glad I could help
Thank you bro. My stick drift got so bad that it was unfixable, say for replacing the thumbstick. Thank you for this video, it really helped me! Got my controller working as good as new.
Glad it helped
I used your video to repair my controller which disconnected constantly with strong movements. I welded the GND pin that connect the battery with the PCB plate. Muchas gracias 🎉
Glad it helped.
BETTER video than the one I watched that didnt show the trick for the trigger ribbon, ended up breaking the latch off so now I get to buy a new controller. I have saved this vid so next time there is stick drift, Ill use THIS vid to actually fix it. CHEERS!
Good luck with the new controller.
Glad it helped!
I just finished replacing my girlfriends sons joysticks. They had started to do the dreaded drift. Thanks for the video. Very easy to follow step by step. I even used the idea to draw where all the screws go under the faceplate. Excellent work my friend and thanks again!
Glad I could help. Great job getting it working.
Thanks for the feedback and info for other folks. Glad you got it sorted.
How does the thumbpad come free of the analog stick? Just glossed right over that about 3:30-3:40.
Just pull up on it. Don't jerk it, steady pressure.
Glad I could help, hope you get better soon.

AMAZING video. my son broke his joystick and this helped me replace it for less than 20 bucks rather than buying a $150 controller. hes so happy you just saved my wallet. you got yourself a new sub
Glad I could help. Ya'll have fun!
Thanks
Glad I could help you along, but it sounds like you could've handled it on your own. Good job!
Thanks so much, today I cracked just the outer shell of my controller ring, and decided to replace it with another older controller's ring I had. This made it so much easier.
That's great. Good job. Glad I could help you get there.
I've been dealing with controller drift for months, watching this video until eventually I got the confidence to do this, thank you so much.
Glad I could help you out. Great job on your repair!
recently when i went to grab my left controller the bottom middle trigger button was just flopping around and wouldn't spring back out. i had a old destroyed remote and with the help of your tutorial, was able to swap the entire plate that housed the trigger button! super huge help and now i have a almost like new working controller to show for it. Thanks again!
Great initiative! I'm glad I could give you some help. Happy gaming!
Great video followed the instructions and it now work’s perfectly 🎉 the only thing I changed is I took a picture of the controller with the black face removed, printed it and simply stuck the screws where they belonged in the controller. Simple simple!
Great job! Glad you were able to fix it.
Thanks so much for the immediate support, although it turns out I just forgot a screw though. Definitely subscribed!@@ImaRainbow

After recently buying a Q2 and getting the dreaded stick drift, I knew I'd have to do this myself but really didn't want to. But this video makes it seem really easy if you're just patient and calm, I've ordered replacement sticks and am going to replace both of them tomorrow!
Good luck with that.
Good luck.
God bless you. It took me 5 hours but idc. I replaced my joystick. It works. Thanks you so much
Congratulations! You did the work, I'm happy its working for you!

I watched some other videos before yours, and let me say this, you are amazing! You made it soooo much easier to rebuild, and good news, it did the trick! Wonderful job sir!
Glad I could help.
That's not repairable. You'll need to replace the part.
Glad I could help.
10:35 accidentally forced that open. The ribbon seems fine, but the latch fell off. Is it still functional?
Good luck.
@@ImaRainbow thanks but one more thing, I took off all the screws but the ring won't budge. What should I do
If all the screws are out then it should come apart. th-cam.com/video/aZ57n6iam6Q/w-d-xo.html
This helped me so much, my thumb stick was broken (no stick drift just plastic part) and it helped me so much
Glad I could help.
@ImaRainbow thank you very very much.
You're welcome.
@@ImaRainbow Thank you so much for taking the time to reply :)

Glad I could help. Great job repairing it.
Your video is amazing! It made replaying the joystick easy. I have saved it just in case I need to replace another one! Makes the job a lot less stressful! Thank you so much for sharing. You blessed my day!
Great to hear! You have a great day too!
Thank you for this great video. I have a front trigger that doesnt come out completely anymore. Any advice how i can fix that?
Now it gives a signal that it is triggered all the time.
Regards
Dirk
There's a spring that's supposed to keep that trigger "out". If one side of the spring is out of position, it will prevent the trigger from opening fully. You might want to look for that. Also, the center pin that holds the spring, will occasionally work itself out. Good luck.
@ImaRainbow thanks
@ImaRainbow thanks for helping I hope you have a nice day I like how you help people for no money and you are making everyone happy
The tutorial helped me understand what was wrong with ny controller. The ribbon cable wasn't connected and it made my controller work again. Thanks!
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for providing that feedback.
Thank you so much for the video, it was easy step by step, what happened was that my right controller had a problem with the top trigger, and it wasn’t fully responding so it used some alcohol and and put it back together and it works now.😀😀😀
Glad I could help you out. Have fun!
Fantastic video. It was my first time opening up this controller and your guidance was perfect to replace the joystick. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the detailed explanation on each step, excellent work. This helped me considerably through the trauma of taking it apart. 😵💫
You're very welcome!
Thanks, got one thumbstick replaced tonight. Only sliced my finger once with the razor blade spudger they included.
Glad you fixed it with your blood!
Glad I could assist. Thanks for watching.
Once again thankyou for this video, second time my controller broke and both times this was the goto video :)))
You're welcome!
I need help with stick drift, left control. I have black plastic(3:00) off and removed screws
this helped me a lot to get my right controller working again. (slight corrosion on one of the connectors, fixed by gingerly scrubbing it with isoprop. really wasnt as finicky as i feared. lol
great, detailled video!
Glad I could help out. Great job on getting your controller fixed!
What screw driver bits are needed? I can figure it out after the fact but I need to order them from Amazon so I want to ensure I get everything I need. I couldnt remove the screws for those under the the sticker with the star drives I had
T5 bits. I've had a few reports that the top two screws under the cover plate are T4s. (Haven't seen that myself, but have had those comments.)
Thank you!
Whatever works for you. Glad you got it sorted.
Wait I'm kind of new to electronic rebuilding and stuff what can I do to prevent a ESD if I don't have the special equipment you do?
Working on a non conductive surface is a good start. Unvarnished wood, rubber mat or mouse pad, rubber bath mat, wood cutting board, are all good things to work on. If you don't have a ground strap, try not to wear clothing that'll build up a static charge, no polyester. Touch some unpainted metal with both hands, a pot or pan will work, immediately before working on the controller. That'll help dissipate any charge you might've already built up. These will probably get you by.
@@ImaRainbow thank you very much
i followed your instructions and it worked great !, 10/10 instruction
although the lights were flashing before i put any screws back in but now that its all back together the lights don't flash and it doesn't respond. could a misaligned screw mess this up or could i have accident fried it somehow putting the screws back in?
You'll want to verify that you didn't swap one of the longer screws for a shorter screw. If you've got a metal screw impacting your circuit board, that could cause a problem. Also, check and make sure that the ribbon cable is seated correctly in both the connectors. All the ribbon cables.
Hope that helps.
