GN is working with Eden Reforestation Projects once again to plant 10 trees per GN store item sold until December 18, 2020. This applies to multi-item orders (as a multiplier) and to back ordered items. You can grab mouse mats, modmats, bar runners and glasses, shirts, and more here and contribute to the cause: store.gamersnexus.net/

Lol I trust you guys and liked the video you made about the PS5. I say the people who are getting mad at you about the thermal issue's tell them to show the exact math behind it. Meaning take up thermal dynamics book learn all the solutions and proofs from the book. What you just basically did is a lab test. I enjoy when you guys do some lab tests. So thank you.

Lets be honest the PS5 is underwhelming for the size you expect to have something different but so far we looking at 60fps 1440p and 30fps 4k* sony may try to sell their fake 4k the one that uses up scaling or some shet but its not True 4k its up scaled/ part of it renders 4k whilst rest of screen renders lower they sold the same thing on ps4 pro.

It's why an overclocked chip won't maintain the same clocks for 5 years. After a few years the heat or higher voltage breaks down the silicon so it's maximum potential is lowered. It would be a good test for a launch unit but as for one that has sat in an un-air conditioned room for 4 years the temperature limit may creep into normal usage temps. Not guaranteed but it could.

How can anyone trust a company over an independent reviewer?
The only reason we've been getting a better standard of quality from products in the last decade or so is thanks to the easily accessible independent reviewers that are pro consumer.

@@1meen1 there is it, the nit pick cheap philosopher trying to come across as a deep thinker.
What OP was likely talking about is old magazine and even website publications that were too corporate and not always, if ever, pro consumer.
You can see that a lot on video game reviewers which are basically going extinct since no one trusts them anymore.
As far as hardware review, Tom's Hardware is a good example. The whole just buy ray tracing cards, and excusing poor VRMs on MBs aches back to an era printed media was king and you'd make your pick off the charts on a magazine that could just massage the results how ever way they pleased if that meant more and better sponsors deals.
Ence the phrasing, independent reviewers, the kind that live and die over how honest they are, even if that means companies stop supplying them with samples and they have to buy them themselves.
No one is claiming every single independent reviewer is good, there's no need to make note of that exclusion without detriment to the point.

It's why Apple never updates their hardware till they totally replace it. Nobody complains when it's bad so they keep it as it is. Hell half the time people blaim it as the users fault.
It can be fixed with a longer thermal pad, but it is annoying it was an issue in the first place. It likely won't lead to any issues in the near future but may in say 4-8 years. I know I saw a couple people with launch PS4s having stability issues when Battlefront 2 came out. The launch PS4 also had bad thermal pad contact. It's why quickly after launch they stopped making the glossy PS4s and released the fully matte ones.

I'm a noob, I understand so little if the terms you used in thee thermal testing BUT I understood enough! I'm so relieved you addressed the "blind Sony defense" because I asked around, and I found that from many console owners and pc builders I got the, "If Sony deemed it necessary, they would've done it, they test these tuings and study them rigorously so they're designed to run hot" which made me feel stupid, but I knew a HUGE heat spot on my floor where my PS5 vents couldn't just be nothing.
    2) I don't keep PS5 in a tightly closed entertainment system, it's got a foot of space all around to run, and on a bit of an elevation. I saw custom side plates with side slats cut into it where the fan runs, and wondered if those would improve anything, but then worried about it becoming a "dust hole"....would it be a bad idea? How can I safely place a mesh on those slats on the custom faceplate, not anywhere on the inner console?
Is playing without side plates all the time a bad idea? Anyway...thanks for all this good info, it was real helpful for this noob.

In regards to adding a fan on the intake: rise in temperature due to stagnant air would only be an issue if the exhaust side is not sufficient in size. ie: large volume of air intake but small exhaust builds back pressure because air can’t escape fast enough. Result: Stagnation lending to trapped heated air waiting its turn to escape. A balance of proper exhaust to intake ratio need be applied. In the PS5’s case, there is sufficient exhaust sizing to fulfill adding an additional intake fan. This is not just my theory, this is in practice as well.

Why would you be angry to hear that a console family, which spent the past 2 generations suffering from cooling issues, is doing better now but still has some room for improvement? What gets me is not how some fanbases are so eager to blindly accept anything they are given, but rather the ones who are quick to become aggressive towards anybody who offers criticism, as well as feedback and advice (Like Steve here) on how to make the system even better. That seems like an incredibly self-defeating thing to do.

Hahaha holy shit this actually was controversial.
Look, I'm a Sony fanboy and was brought up with the console from PS1. I love the RPGs they put out (Final Fantasy mostly) and I have thrown a ton of money on games on their store. They're my go-to gaming machine at all times. And I have a gaming PC with latest tech and a 144Hz UW monitor. I still prefer the consoles.
That being said I had absolutely no trouble with your review. I'm not to the point where I think they can't do wrong or that they won't screw up. If something's bad, you say it's bad. No matter who it is.
One of the main reasons I upgraded was actually cause I don't want to keep my old PS4 PRO for too long before selling it. Not only does the value diminish but also components might break (My old PS3 had it's Blu-Ray drive stop reading discs which felt odd as nothing else broke...).
Now the thing I would like to know really, cause I haven't seen that mentioned, is what happens if/when the internal SSD fails. Cause it's soldered on, you can't change it. Is it TLC? SLC? MLC? Life expectancy? I know flash has a set amount of read/write and given that the internal M.2 isn't activated yet and even if it does get activated people will still use external drives or delete old games to add new ones, it will get a lot of use. So far I haven't had any drives fail, regardless of if it's old HDD in a case or an SSD in my PS4.
At any rate, never buckle. GN is the best tech channel for a reason: honesty and integrity. At least as far as I can tell. No idea if you're shills on the side!

About modding the PS5. There is one mod that I actually would recommend. I purchased a set of replacement side panels for my ps5 for about $30 off ebay. They come in various colors, pick your favorite, whatever, and then I took a large hole saw and cut a 70mm hole directly over top of the fan intake. This does seem to improve flow into the machine quite a bit, and it runs much quieter as a result.
I'm not sure if I would recommend this mod if you lay your ps5 on it's side, but mine stands up all of the time. So it has been a very interesting experiment, and I would honestly love to see you guys test to see if I'm as smart as I think I am...

I've bought used gpu's i had to break down to get all of the dust and pet hair out of, soak the PCB in electronics cleaner and replace thermal pads to get out cigarette smoke. People are nasty in general, consoles just make it harder to clean and other than saying to vacuum the vents the manufacturers didn't really tell people to clean them out. This time around Sony boasted about that dust trap area, will see how well that works.

Though you can say with pretty high confidence that a higher operating temperature will reduce the lifetime of a semiconductor.
I was taught to use the Arrhenius equation which couples the expected failure rate to the temperature (which is coupled exponentially). With that, every single Degree that you can run a component cooler, you have an exponentially lower failure rate.
While that doesn't mean, that this is of any importance to the console (A reduction from 30 years to 20 years lifetime would still be acceptable for a console), it does mean a difference (and it may be significant).

I really enjoy these videos, when you explain content to people outside your typical audience. I loved when you brought up, some engineer at Sony is probably saying I Told You!... Because I’m a Network engineer at a large IT organization and that happens ALL the time when working with the various business focused members of our organization. I feel like the people who ask some of these questions don’t have much experience on how large organizations work. You have the engineers, who really just want to make the best thing they can from a pure functional standpoint. Then you have the designers who wants to make the nicest cosmetic design possible. Then you have the product managers trying to drive down cost. Then marketing team trying to find the right angle to market the product. And there are project managers in charge of making everyone compromise... I love seeing a product and coming to a conclusion that, oh the design team definitely it there way on this one, or Oh! The engineering team got their way this time. Then there’s the products where project managers did an amazing job and got all teams to work together and the product has the best of most aspects.
Keep up the great work GN!

The best advice is at 25:55 as anyone can do it. Sucking more air out from the system might help keep the system a bit cooler and that might bring down the temperature on the memory. It should be enough to prevent overheating and wait for a more proper fix from Sony. This in combination with a firmware fix where you could select a higher speed on the Internal fan would probably work fine. I do hope Sony does a permanent fix through a future redesign of the internals of the console to bring the memory temperature down.
