@58 One of the other things I hated about the NS derailment was the media constantly spouting nonsense about how the airbrakes were "civil war era", implying they were out of date and should be replaced with ECP brakes. I found this incredibly moronic as, while I agree that ECP Brakes are better from a technology standpoint, they aren't compatible with the airbrakes that, lemme see, EVERY OTHER COMMON CARRIER RAILROAD IN NORTH AMERICA USES, and NS would be shooting itself in the foot if they implemented it. Also, the brakes weren't even what caused the derailments, as it was overheated bearings that caused the cars to jump the tracks and the defect detectors failed to recognize it. Yeah, NS f*cked up and they should pay more money to the people of EP and need to hire more people to maintain their shit, but I also blame the media for its total f*cking incompetence in properly conveying the information to the general public, who now thinks that every derailment is some elaborate government scheme to break the economy or something.
As a retired railway worker, the railroads are being forced to adapt to tier 4 emissions that is why they are buying new ones. They don’t worry about how they look,it’s about keeping them out there making money. You evidently don’t know about railroad business or culture!
CSX also has way too many GEVOs. Every single CSX train I've seen has had either a GEVO, a GP38-3, or an SD40-3, Also, is it required for all Class I railroads to have K5HLs on basically all of their GEVOs? 💀
I know how you feel. I hate K5HL's because of how ugly and awful they sound. The 2004 Horn Decibel Law ruined the trumpet sounds of American railroading, and the most ironic part is that the K5HL is actually louder than the horns it replaced from the factory. Robert Swanson is rolling in his grave.
The thing I hate the most about CN is that they're pretty much strangling Amtrak long distance capacity for western Amtrak long distance trains with their Chicago - Carbondale line. How so? They're forcing Amtrak to run 7 superliners on the Illini and Saluki trains, taking away capacity from trains that need those superliners like the Zephyr, the Chief, the Empire Builder, the Texas Eagle, and the Capitol Limited. Also CN is just really bad to Amtrak in general, since they demanded Amtrak to pay for maintenance on a line that the Adirondack runs on last year.
Congress needs to repeal some railroad law from the past to give priority to Amtrak., one regional dispatcher in the upper midwest to route all rail movement
I've said this before elsewhere, but CSX not fully painting their HUs is a huge missed opportunity, imagine something like ACL's purple transfered to a GEVO the same way NS did. Most railroads back in the 40s and 50s had some amazing nose designs. Pretty much every Class I got poisoned by PSR. As a foamer, I missed a heritage unit after wasting an entire day trackside because NS decided to hold it and let literally everything else go first. Single track unsignaled line here BTW. At least with CSX there's a sort of ballpark time when a symbol can be expected.
You are so right about the pink fading on cp liveries. I swear, one day I am going to have like a ACE under perfect light. And theres gonna be a barbie dream house on the back that ruins it all.
I can confirm I hate GEVOS (especially NS). Today, I was waiting for the afternoon departure of (the symbol NS 31M) which had a solo GEVO. So, when they were coming down the yard to grab their freight and go, I heard on my scanner "LOUD AND CLEAR" that their battery died on a NS ES44AC lmao. Frick NS and frick GE.
Former UP conductor here. I was one of the survivors of the 2014 Hoxie AR head on train crash. Working for UP wasn’t as bad back then. Great regular turn road pools, good home time between trips, and laying off wasn’t that hard to do. Just stay under 8 layoffs in a 90 day period. I was in an SD70M when we were struck by the other train. Much better to be in than an SD40-2 in that situation.
If you're looking for SD70m's most of them are in Chicagoland. I caught an SD70m duo pulling a train just the other day. Then I saw one trailing an intermodal train. And one is on a local near me.
The thing you said about the East Palestine derailment is insanely true. “There they go to derail another train” this, “they derail those trains on purpose” that. It was because of a hot axle. Most derailments are something else, like hitting a semi or a wrong set switch.
Yeah I got a UP SD70M leader on Amtraks A1 Sunset limited a month back….but that was the last time I’ve seen one in the lead….even on the one local UP that runs near my house…no more SD70M leads…..just GEVOs of course now! So fun..
Definitely, the biggest change I've noticed, that many others can probably tell you as well from going Class 1 to shortline, is a much more predictable type of schedule. Not only that, but unlike NS where basically everybody is going back and forth about seniority and instantly hating or looking the other way from you for being the new girl, shortlines or at least the one I work personally, is literally like that of a family type of vibe and work environment which definitely makes the job a lot easier to do and brings back the fun and enjoyment of it.
I was at Rochelle a couple weeks ago and caught 2 flared radiator SD70Ms leading. I Didn’t realize that was a catch that’s becoming rarer. Also caught an AC6000. That was pretty cool to see.
The part about the SD70Ms getting thrown out of service, well I think they're doing that in favor of the rebuilt Dash 9s. They've been pulling dozens of the Dash 9s out of storage to be rebuilt to C6Ms (designated as C44ACMs by UP)
i think csx was going for a peeling back the layers look like underneath csx there is the cheesie system, seaboard system, lanchaster and nothern ,conrail you get the point kits literally Pelling back the layers of time .
I like that both CSX and NS have Conrail heritage units (as they should). It would be cool to see them running together as foreign power one way or the other.
The SD70M’s are definitely on the outs, but I still see them going through the Roseville yard a lot. Both in consists and being serviced. There is a deadline there with about 20 of them with the number boards removed and the NIGX reporting mark spraypainted on them.
CSX roster 220 SD70MAC's, but I rarely see them on anything other than locals. And out of the 25 or so CSX trains I see a month, including locals, you'll be lucky to see more than two MAC leaders.
Before 1980 the Southern Pacific had impressive (40- 50mph)combinations going by a residential back yard between north 4th and sixth Avenue in Tucson. That guy probably didn't realize how fortunate he was. Learning to sleep next to massive noise takes time, like Amtrak stopped at a siding, all is quiet till 4, 6 or eight Loud Roarring beasts go by without any advance notice followed by a 400 or more wheels banging 4 at a time with 2 seconds between which are sure to wake up someone
I grew up, and still live by, the formerly Wisconsin central, now Canadian national main line between Fond du Lac and Slinger Wisconsin. I've seen a lot of Canadian national trains in my 35 years. And I don't think I've ever seen one that I would call Pink. The red that CN uses is more of a tomato red, and it just gets more orange as it fades. I personally like the CN colors, the old seargent stripe paint scheme is awesome, one of the boldest of all time. What's interesting to me about the CPKC new colors is that it's basically the CN livery, but the red goes 3/4 down the train before white stripe/black, instead of 1/4. CN is og and looks better. I agree, pretty uninspired and disappointing.
Yeah it makes no sense. The SD70M is arguably the best modern EMD locomotive. It's a shame I didn't get out to catch more trains. I'll miss them just like I still miss my beloved NS SD70M units.
To be fair tho CN doesn’t spend money unless they have to, where I live they still run IC SD70’s with the Death Star livery or whatever it’s called that’s why they keep a lot of they’re old fleet cause they still work and run so what’s the point of just getting rid of perfectly good SD70’s or even GP40’s so just having a basic 100 year anniversary livery isn’t very shocking to me tbh and apparently I caught one (forgot when) and I didn’t even know till like a year later
CN definitely keeps more of it's interesting power in Canada (obviously with exceptions) from what I've noticed, I wonder if it has to do with PTC requirements being different for Canadian railroads?
I live in Chicago next to the St. Charles Air line aka downtown connection to the Iowa division . I see the SD-70s almost every day only a handful are in CN paint . On occasion I will see EJ&E SD-38s more often GTW GP-38-2s and sometimes SD-40-2 /Gp-40-2 in CN/GTW/IC paint . I think EHH taught them to be like ICG which didn't repaint most of the former GM&O units.
UP has the point system too. And yes it sucks. You max out at 28. When you lay off you usually get 7 points per week day and like 10 or somethin on the weekends now? Idk they just changed them recently again. Doesn’t take long to stack up and takes 2 weeks marked up to get 4 points back. It’s annoying especially when real life strikes and you can’t show up to work. We also get 5 sick days for the entire year too…
In terms of the UP SD70m’s we have a YCHYC train that comes through our yard and I know the crew quite well and hang their EOT every night, they used to have 2 SD70m’s and now they run either 2 SD40n’s or a AC4400 that’s caught fire a few times and a Genset with it
BNSF is my favorite out of the six class 1 railroads and it’s also the one I most hate because of the crap ton of Gevo’s they have! Thanks for showing my frustrations in this video! Keep up the great work! 👍
I like the CSX Heritage units i think honestly the biggest reason everyone has a problem with them is because we are use to fully painted Heritage units like UP & NS have but CSX made there's stand out from the rest. Only thing i would change is they should put the Heritage logo on the front of the cab so you can actually tell its one of the Heritage units from head on
UP is getting rid of the 70Ms? Thats a damn shame. Fortunately ive seen a lot of the 70m's in Spokane on the SKHK / HKSK trains. Its no wonder i havent seen the 70m's in a while. They got replaced by Gevos / ac44s.
You're correct. Matter of fact, GEVO's have made Class 1 railfanning so boring that I have contemplated quitting the hobby all together many times. Also, sadly, the only shortline near me recently replaced all of their classic SD40-2 units with Dash 9's. But somehow, I can't seem to pull myself away from trains and train media, including videos, documentaries, books, movies, and various toys.
Not talking bad about this video. It gave me some laughs. I can't believe I watched all of it. Hats off to you sir. As a HO scale model enthusiast and not really a die hard rail fan...KCS runs along my drive to work, sorry CPKC, I happen to pay attention to rails. Being in Dallas and driving around, I do have the luxury of seeing a lot of different power, with the exception of CSX. Anyways, loved your dry sense of humor.
I personally like GEVO’s mainly for the sound they make and how badass they look in my opinion. SD70’s are cool, too, but I’ve grown up seeing NS, CSX, and BNSF AC44’s, Dash 9’s, and ES44’s all around me.
Being a csx fan and my TH-cam channel being mostly csx my grip with csx is not the Hu I think some of them look good it’s actually every train having a es44ah on it
CP gets a bonus for avoiding tier 4 junk so far. Railfanning is dead when half of the class 1 rosters will be tier 4s that sound like over-sized vacuum cleaners.
I’ve heard a lot of slack for the whole east Palestine derailment and it was horrible but I still applied to NS and am waiting to hear back for my training date as a conductor in Iowa wish me luck!
You know what really confused me. If these companies care so much about cost cutting, why don't they have the government buy the tracks, and then the government would have to pay for maintenance instead. That would be a massive cost save for them.
I think the reason why CSX only painted 3/4 of their locomotives is so it’s identifiable that it belongs to CSX. Plus, CSX has a New York Central heritage unit that’s 3/4 painted and Norfolk Southern has a heritage unit for New York Central as well. Even though CSX’s is a GEVO and NS’ is an SD70.
7:24 Those 15th anniversary units were actually painted in 2010 for the 15th anniversary of their IPO, not for the railroads 15th anniversary. The Canadian National heritage units were painted in 2020 for the 25th anniversary of the IPO
I live in NS territory, so I pretty often see Dash 9s or AC44C6M's (God forbid I ever see a GEVO or ACE again) but I hate BNSF and CN with a burning passion. I'm already biased towards NS and CP, so that will forever dictate that I have beef with them, but I honestly hate the combination of orange and green for BNSF. The paint scheme itself is cool, just not a big fan of the colors. As for CN, they are the Penn Central of Canada. I get why people hate NS, but even NS isn't as bad as CN when it comes to derailments. I'm obviously biased towards NS as is, but the one thing I love about them and their predecessors is how they have a tradition of running long-hood forward. I've never seen one myself, but it ain't Norfolk Southern if they don't run long-hood forward.
The CSX HUs are awful to me bc 1. They’re not fully painted like they should be. And 2. ALL of them (with the exception of 1982, the “Seaboard System” have historical inaccuracies of some kind! They say in the vids that they “do the research to get it right” when in reality there’s no way that’s the case. In my brutally honest opinion, the CSX HUs are not just the worst HUs but some of the worst LOCOMOTIVES ever painted. They. Are. U G L Y.

The thing with CN's red paint from the 90s is that many 90's paint jobs had some sort of defect that caused them to age very poorly.
CSX also has way too many GEVOs. Every single CSX train I've seen has had either a GEVO, a GP38-3, or an SD40-3, Also, is it required for all Class I railroads to have K5HLs on basically all of their GEVOs? 💀
Not all Gevos have K5hls lol you just gotta try to catch one with a greater horn.
Some Csx gevos I’ve seen some have a different sounding k5hl or k5la like 5337
@@StateRailfan2008 I saw a norfolk southern ES44AC with a Nathan P5 in Suffolk, VA
What I hate is that I can only record one railroad that people roast every time I mention it due to it using the Conrail logo.
0:38 Bnsf also used to have 2000 dash 9s so compare the Gevos to that.
Well now the capitol limited and silver star fused to make the floridian so I guess the western trains can get more superliners now.
It gets worse up in Canada because of CNs new axel count for VIAs new Siemens trains...☠️
Man, It’s a shame the SD70Ms are being put in storage, I love those units.
7:33 CN'S PAINT SCHEME IS MID 🗣️🗣️🔥🔥‼️‼️
I've said this before elsewhere, but CSX not fully painting their HUs is a huge missed opportunity, imagine something like ACL's purple transfered to a GEVO the same way NS did. Most railroads back in the 40s and 50s had some amazing nose designs.
Pretty much every Class I got poisoned by PSR. As a foamer, I missed a heritage unit after wasting an entire day trackside because NS decided to hold it and let literally everything else go first. Single track unsignaled line here BTW. At least with CSX there's a sort of ballpark time when a symbol can be expected.
Hard agree with the cool nose designs in the 40s and 50s. Massive lost opportunity
Two things I hate about BNSF are, they don’t have any heritage units and they don’t care about their War Bonnet units
Because the war bonnets are in terrible shape because they are old
@@BAS19.6 I’ve seen older locomotives in better conditions that them
You're slightly wrong about the war bonnets. BNSF management actively hates them
There's still locomotives in santa fe and Burlington northern colors so they can't do nothing about heritage units rn
@@MystiCmeshtool Those are locomotives that weren’t repainted. They just slapped the BNSF logo onto them and called it good.
Why is UP storing the 70M’s?
Because of PSR.
You are so right about the pink fading on cp liveries. I swear, one day I am going to have like a ACE under perfect light. And theres gonna be a barbie dream house on the back that ruins it all.
7:39 Yeah, the paint on cn’s Dc gevos is pretty faded. But it does give then some character, like with their p3s p5s and 1st gen k5hls.
I agree, but when everything is faded it won't look so great
Great video man! Love the editing and your take on each railroad company
Thanks man!
There’s a few of those SD70Ms that came up here to Alaska.
If I had to pick a favorite out of CSX’s recent heritage unit locomotive fleet, it would probably have to be No. 1869 the “Chesapeake & Ohio”
mine are No. 1852 because of Texas scheme and No. 1902 because I saw that engine leading the CSX Santa train today
@@amtrakproductions-mx9ib ooh nice one
2:27 i was dying of coughing because I absolutely hate that unit so much! I was laughing when you said 4014! 😂
I was at Rochelle a couple weeks ago and caught 2 flared radiator SD70Ms leading. I Didn’t realize that was a catch that’s becoming rarer. Also caught an AC6000. That was pretty cool to see.
Sounds like a good day!
I'm just glad CSX is doing heritage schemes at all. They're not doing it the way I'd like them to, but at least they're doing it.
The SD70M’s are definitely on the outs, but I still see them going through the Roseville yard a lot. Both in consists and being serviced. There is a deadline there with about 20 of them with the number boards removed and the NIGX reporting mark spraypainted on them.
Also CSX: Too much GE...too many units too much alike.
I wish they focused on dash engines.
CSX roster 220 SD70MAC's, but I rarely see them on anything other than locals. And out of the 25 or so CSX trains I see a month, including locals, you'll be lucky to see more than two MAC leaders.
BNSF's biggest flaw is that it's not even a tenth as cool as either of it's halves.
This is so true
The worst thing about Canadian Pacific is getting put on a watch list every time you use the abbreviation.
Basically railroads describe in 3 words
BNSF: to many gevos
UP: killing SD70Ms
CSX: fade heritage units
NS: east Palestine
CPKC: no
CN: maple syrup
Yep
Your videos are great. I have laughed so at the truthfulness of your comments. Keep up the good work
2:27 I refer to that as Union Pacific's "Wokamotive."
I kind of can't believe that UP is storing over 1,000 units that are just about 20 years old even though their GEVOs are the same age
But i still dont get getting rid of the wc sd45s
@@BNSF1458Canada literally does not have PTC, thus a lot of the "interesting" units dont do cross border travel unless they're trailing
I don’t mind CSX’s heritage units too much. I’d sometimes picture them in full heritage paint and the results in those thoughts look off
I've seen 4 BNSF aces in a week, I live on a CN line 😭😭
I saw an SD70M leading a Union Pacific freight train back in October 2023.
We also get 5 sick days for the entire year too…
In terms of the UP SD70m’s we have a YCHYC train that comes through our yard and I know the crew quite well and hang their EOT every night, they used to have 2 SD70m’s and now they run either 2 SD40n’s or a AC4400 that’s caught fire a few times and a Genset with it
As an unfortunate BNSF Staples Sub foamer I can confirm that this line is smattered with GEVOs
BNSF is my favorite out of the six class 1 railroads and it’s also the one I most hate because of the crap ton of Gevo’s they have! Thanks for showing my frustrations in this video! Keep up the great work! 👍
1:11 PREACH. I feel the same way, cause all I mostly see are GEVOs 💀
I really don't get why so many people hate 1979. I love it lol
I like the CSX Heritage units i think honestly the biggest reason everyone has a problem with them is because we are use to fully painted Heritage units like UP & NS have but CSX made there's stand out from the rest. Only thing i would change is they should put the Heritage logo on the front of the cab so you can actually tell its one of the Heritage units from head on
They do need to make a different way to separate the Heritage scheme from the normal CSX scheme like there military unit
Living in a big CN area, they seriously do look boring as heck. Probably a big part of why i didnt get into trains until way later
UP is getting rid of the 70Ms? Thats a damn shame. Fortunately ive seen a lot of the 70m's in Spokane on the SKHK / HKSK trains. Its no wonder i havent seen the 70m's in a while. They got replaced by Gevos / ac44s.
GEVOs made modern railfanning pretty boring… if I need a sleep aid I watch Class 1 videos. When I actually want to stay awake I watch 2nd gen EMDs!
I agree with you. *Chuckles* with useless *GEVOs in my yard* shall be scrapped💀
I saw 4 C40-8W’s yesterday.
I will mis those Nathan K3LAs
I personally like GEVO’s mainly for the sound they make and how badass they look in my opinion. SD70’s are cool, too, but I’ve grown up seeing NS, CSX, and BNSF AC44’s, Dash 9’s, and ES44’s all around me.
I used to work for Norfolk Southern and they also use the point system, and you’re basically on call 24/7
Being a csx fan and my TH-cam channel being mostly csx my grip with csx is not the Hu I think some of them look good it’s actually every train having a es44ah on it
What about Union Pacific's fleet of Dash 9s they seem to have put them aside, and today, they more rebuilds on their roster.
CP gets a bonus for avoiding tier 4 junk so far. Railfanning is dead when half of the class 1 rosters will be tier 4s that sound like over-sized vacuum cleaners.
The CSX heritage fleet is cool, sure it isnt fully painted but they still look nice either way imo
Csx has some Gevos with K5la!
I’ve heard a lot of slack for the whole east Palestine derailment and it was horrible but I still applied to NS and am waiting to hear back for my training date as a conductor in Iowa wish me luck!
0:37 & 1:04
My anger issues could never if someone said that... 😵💫
You know what really confused me. If these companies care so much about cost cutting, why don't they have the government buy the tracks, and then the government would have to pay for maintenance instead. That would be a massive cost save for them.
BNSF orange doesn't age all that well either. I really miss the Cascade green of the BN locos. BNSF=Better Not Start a Family...
Atleast u guys it fallen flags over here on the CSX Rochester Sub i can only get AC4400CW and GEVOS...
You guys get a lot of YN2s at least.
@RAtheGoodRailfanner_888 yea
Totally agree about the CSX HUs. To me they look like a nice unit that was wrecked, then the cab was replaced with the cab off a different unit.
VERY VERY good video... and for the record, the warbonnet paint scheme is the BEST in the history of railroading... (um, when the red ain't faded)
One more thing that sucks about the Union Pacific is they have over a million more gevos than every other class 1 combined
BNSF has one more fault. The treatment of their crews.
I love the part that he says "CN, What is this? *rock head emoji sound*"
7:24 Those 15th anniversary units were actually painted in 2010 for the 15th anniversary of their IPO, not for the railroads 15th anniversary. The Canadian National heritage units were painted in 2020 for the 25th anniversary of the IPO
Oh alright, thanks for the info. I was a little bit confused on those actually, Dash 8s weren't even around 85 years ago 😂
@@BNSF1458 yes, that’s the common mistake about these locomotives
I see a lot of sd70m in my area probably explains why UP is putting them into storage
Bro you forgot NS 💀💀💀 honestly, it doesn’t matter, they derail so much they don’t even exist imo
No I didn't 💀
The first thing I thought of as soon as you started with "I Like Trains!" ...I thought of TomSka ADSM😂 If ya know, ya know
Yessir finally! The 2000s and 2010s were goated but not the 2020s so much!!!!
the 2020s is such a train wreck
Because of PSR.
The CSX HUs are awful to me bc 1. They’re not fully painted like they should be. And 2. ALL
of them (with the exception of 1982, the “Seaboard System” have historical inaccuracies of some kind! They say in the vids that they “do the research to get it right” when in reality there’s no way that’s the case. In my brutally honest opinion, the CSX HUs are not just the worst HUs but some of the worst LOCOMOTIVES ever painted. They. Are. U G L Y.
