At my spot, there is a area between the CSX tracks and the NS track. If a train is on CSX, the CSX gates go down (as usual) and the south gate on NS goes down (and vice versa) What I hate, people sometimes clear the first gate (as it’s going down) but doesn’t clear the second one and blocks my shot

I went out Railfanning one time and some woman from a Disney movie I’ll say called the cops on me for being “too suspicious”. The cops showed up and told me what I’m doing, explained it and then I was let go without any arrest or warnings. I still remember this woman said “Arrest him!” To the 911 dispatcher. Still funny to this day. So far from January to now I’ve been called by the cops for over 10+ times.

Many people have zero understanding of criminal law, and of the right to video and photo public scenes from public property. I was a 911 dispatcher in a suburb on a UP main line and yard in the Chicago area. I don't recall ever getting (or hearing) calls in the neighboring towns on our radio frequency of "suspicious person(s)" turning out to be railfans. But that was in the 1990's-2003, when some people still had at least half a brain and could figure out railfans weren't doing anything illegal (except for the period immediately after 9/11, when everyone doing almost anything anywhere could be a potential terrorist).

I had the same thing happen last night (and many times before). Long story short, it's one of my usual spots, public property, and the cops see me all the time and know what I'm doing. One time the cop even helped me with a flat tire after being called on me.

Had it happen for the first time recently I was about 10 feet from the tracks looking at a Signal I was standing there for probably only 35 seconds and the red SUV pulled into the parking lot and the lady pulled out her phone and told the cops that I had been standing on the tracks 3 cop cars pulled up later I explained it what I was doing and they all left. That lady works for a company by the tracks has probably seen me a million times now and all of a sudden just calls the cops on me🙄

Just recently, CPKC restored a steam locomotive, and I had really wanted to see it. So, sure enough it was coming back to Calgary after going to Medicine Hat. The next day we go to the track where the engine was. Half an hour later we heard the whistle and got the camera rolling. When the train went by three employees leaned out the window and waved (and smiled) as it passed. Long story short, it was a very special moment. :)

That happened to me last weekend when I recorded a UP MOW truck stopped at a crossing. One of the workers approached me to say “Don’t record us I don’t want to been seen on the internet.” I put away my phone until my scanner picked up the same frequency as the MOW. He didn’t approve of me listening to them while they did maintenance on the main line. Curious, he asked me how I got their frequency, I replied “I got it from online” (Rail frequencies are easily accessible on a few public websites) then he proceeded to work on the truck.

    Good video!
Here are some things that annoy the heck out of me:
    -People asking what I'm doing
-Weather being beautiful all the days you can't railfan, but on the day you can railfan, it's a tempest and it's freezing and you hate everything
-The embarrassment of recording a train in front of a town of people. Where I railfan (the NEC) there are always people around giving me your patented "The Look". It's always so embarrassing. And also when you have to explain to people why you're doing something weird because you want to see a train
-When your batteries are dying on your phone/camera right before the most important train/special unit is coming
-Speaking of special units, WHY DO THEY ALWAYS COME BY AFTER DARK
-Semis always get in the way of my shots.
-When you inadvertently sniff or make a noise during a shot and now that's in the video forever
-You already mentioned this, but the train always comes as your walking/driving away. "The best way to make a train come is to leave" is so true
    -Karens
-Having to go through or hang around shady neighborhoods to railfan
-Having camera troubles right as the train is coming
-People talking to you during a shot
-The Grass Is Greener On The Other Side Of The Fence Syndrome. I've seen almost everything in the Northeast. I would love to do some West Coast railfanning and see other things.
    -COVID ruining everything
-Life getting in the way of railfanning (work/school/other important life things)
-Waiting for hours to see a special unit and it mysteriously never comes
-That one special unit that has eluded you forever
-Seeing the same trains over and over and over. I have a million videos of the same copy-paste Metro North Kawasaki M8s that all look the same.
-having the perfect shot with the most picturesque sunset one could ever dream of ... and then not a single train comes until dark.
    -nosy cops
-maintenance deciding that right when you get set up is when they will start work
    -forgetting stuff at home
    ok rant over

      The only gripe
I have about railfanning as of now is the lack of availability. I have a camera on my phone and love not too far from railroad tracks. But the issue is that it’s located underneath the overpass I pass on my way to school and home. Cars come here so often that I think people will give me “The Look” and wouldn’t appreciate me railfanning in such an area. I’d have to agree with them. There is a storage area close to the rails luckily. But it’s in a bad place because trees obscure the view of trains :(. my best bet so far seem to be either a RR crossing or a train station. And while I don’t go all the time I do alternatively live near a train station for the MNR (Metro North Railroad) and sometimes at night when I’m at home. The trains under the overpass sound thier horn and I hear them. So yeah…

Had a CSX conductor tell me that I had been "called in to the police" for illegally filming trains (from a public road, mind you). I was filming him hooking up a manned helper set in Sherwood, TN, also known as the Middle of Nowhere. I had my scanner on with my earplug in, so I knew damned well that I hadn't been called in by anyone. Besides, when I told a local guy about it later, he told be that the nearest state police barracks was 45-50 minutes away and I was quite sure that there was no CSX cop anywhere around either.
This was just days after Congress had prevented railroad workers from striking and this clown was pissed off at the world.
He said "This train is hauling hazardous materials and it's illegal for you to film it.". I called him on his crap and told him that the only thing hazardous on his empty grain train was his BS.

can relate to a few of these:
The inadvertently sniff or make a noise.
Seeing a train come when you leave.
Seeing the same trains over and over. (I film the UTA Frontrunner trains and they are all the same.)
Having a nice sunset but no train. (I usually take pictures of the tracks or crossings at least as something.)
The one I'm mad at the most is people who walk right next to me waiting for a train and blocking my way when I need to rurn the camera when it ends. And one where 2 ladies asked me what I was videoing when I was directly filming a Coaster at Carlsbad for the first time visiting there, it was about an hour flight from Utah.
And another thing that happened, I was at a crossing and a cop was asking for my date of birth and name a year and a half ago and wanted to make sure I wasn't waiting for a train to hit me. Later in July 2023 at the same crossing another cop did the same but this time asked how I got here and where I lived. He also asked where my parents were at. But the outcome of both incidents were not too bad and no trains came during those incidents.
It was really annoying but I'm gonna change the mood. Most drivers dont block my view. One time I was filming a train and a driver came to a stop not particularly blocking my few and backed up. Even when turned my camera towards the direction the train was coming towards me.

Another thing that can also be hated, or at least in my case, that there are people who discriminate (OR BETTER SAID, BULLYING) against other Railfans from other countries, for example, the Mexican Railfans, In this case, the Railfans of the United States (SOME, NOT ALL ARE LIKE THIS), some encourage bad things, such as bullying towards Mexicans, or criticizing for stupid things that have nothing to do with, Those are things that Mexican Railfans hate about those from the United States (I REPEAT NOT EVERYONE HAS THAT BEHAVIOR) 🚆🚆🇲🇽🇺🇲

One train eventually passed and I waited a bit longer after. I was standing close to the tracks looking for a train when somebody on the road with an average blue vehicle rolled down his window when he was approaching the crossing and then yelled at the top of his lungs: "GET OFF THE TRACKS" At first I was just a bit nervous and got off the tracks until I started shitting my pants when he turned around and pulled next to my truck. Another trouble of railfanning in big stations is sometimes the people there will give me the look and not the driver. One time I was in this somewhat small station and there was a ice cream shop right next door. Because of this a bunch of kids would come and eat ice cream on the platform. I had this group of about 4 kids just STARING at my camera. And one of them was even playing on the tracks. (You know karens should be talkin the them). He was just blocking a perfect curve shot.

The one I relate to most out of these is the look from the BNSF workers or just rando people driving by with that look like WTF are you doing here LOL... You know I love shooting backlit, mid afternoon is not as cool as late evening like ya said but I still love it! Also blue hour is frustrating but if ya tweak the kelvin in your camera you can def fix that and I only shoot manual so can't relate to the focus issue LOL... I do relate to calculating how much of my life I lost waiting for a train some times and then wonder if it was worth it LOL.. But I find it relaxing also and if I wasn't down trackside I proly just have the tv on or something else:) Man your spoof videos are always the best, and that was kinda crazy to see a tractor in the back of a ballast car:) Hope ya had a great Thanksgiving George, I have been busy adding scenery to my HO scale layout, check it out when ya get a chance buddy. Karens... I tend to deal with quite a few busybodies who just can't mind their own business... usually it's minor/police called and they basically laugh at the situation for how dumb it is... but here is the worst one...
Was getting camera set up when guys across the street begin screaming at me to stop filming them (at that point I wasn't) I told them I'm not and that this is a hobby and that I am set up for a train (offered to show them the high green). They then claimed that the train "doesn't come until 3pm," (it was 8am) told me I'm trespassing (was on a sidewalk at a crossing) and parked illegally, called me some choice words (I don't hold back, so I let rip), one guy said his dad works for CSX and owns the property I was parked on (a parking lot that I've seen people park in), and they threatened to beat me up. I began filming with my phone, as I felt unsafe, and they FLIPPED out and claimed they were calling the police. The guy who was being the loudest came up to me, claimed he was a Christian and other random stuff I don't remember. I told him "Christians don't act that way" and he began making excuses about it and the went right back to cussing. I gave up, and I went around the corner and waited for the police. They came, I showed them the video, and they were on my side...

There were 2 times I had the cops on me called because I was watching highway traffic while standing on an overpass. I don't stand on overpasses while watching traffic anymore (I stand off to the side somewhere).
