IF YOU SEE THIS, THE DIRECT SEQUEL TO THIS VIDEO IS OUT NOWW!!!!! myself along with a few other swag Train youtubers ranked the units in this video on a tier list!
13:58 The D&RGW actually didn’t become a part of UP (technically at all) until 1996 with SP. And that ‘technically’ is that, the D&RGW bought SP, then later bought UP, going with the more known names.
"This unit is actually meant to commemorate what CN's paint scheme looked like... 5 minutes ago" ah, 5 minutes ago, that was so long ago that I can barely remember it! good job CN for even making a heritage unit for this forgotten era!
I railfan NJ Transit and I've seen almost all of the heritage units. I'm only missing the Erie and Erie Lackawanna. I finally saw 4101 at my local train station last week. My top two have to be 4109 and 4101. 4101 is interesting because the livery it wears is the same as it was when NJT first got it, it then got repainted to the grey with the slanted stripes when NJT overhauled back in the 90's. I'm glad it got repainted back to the original livery. It also retains its original high mounted bell, which most got switched to be below the cab. The bell is also an actual bell, not an e-bell that NJT widely uses now. I took a video of it pulling into my local station and you can see the clapper striking the inside of the bell. The horn it has isn't the best though, I wish it had a cooler horn. My favorite NJT engine though is the Atlas locomotive 4503. I preordered the HO scale model last year and it should be coming later this year.
Update as of 11.27.2024 : Amtk heritage units 161 and 822 were involved in two fires, 161 is probably going to be scrapped with a alc42 involved in the blaze. Both will prob be scrapped.
Thanks for watching! As usual, I got some info wrong, probably missed some units, it really do be like that sometimes! I'm sorry, lol. What is your personal favorite Heritage unit? Comment below!
I don't know why some people say that union pacific is a Overrated railroad when they had the 1st world's biggest steam locomotive in the world's biggest diesel locomotive
mbta's only heritage unit ever, the ex-bn gp9 no. 1921 painted and debuted in the year 1991. it was in boston and maine maroon and gold colors, the heritage unit was named "the pride of charlestown" which was named after where the former boston and maine railroad's freight yard and roundhouse was located in the city of boston. it's now currently owned under hobo railroad ownership in new hampshire, it hasn't moved ever since the hobo railroad owned it.
1:23 I didn’t know Amtrash was painting their P42s in heritage schemes. The problem with P42’s (and most other passenger diesel locomotives) is there is not enough paint on earth to make their hideous designs look good. You can paint a turd all you want, it’ll still look like a turd. Bring back the E units. Great video!
Here in Australia, we don't have heratige units like in North America, our heratige units are all original locomotives still in their Australian National schemes (please help GM2, a modified E/F loco, has been in service since 1954)
Nice to see my BNSF Heritage Units made into a Video, even if it was the one Screenshot I made. There was a "Freight Edition that featured all the Freight Liveries, but I'm having trouble getting the Decals the show up on the Units currently. The one you showed was part of the Passenger Pack. Also I agree with you on the BNSF thing. Why do you think I made those Units for TS Classic LOL
I Managed to catch almost all of the CN Heritage Units Caughted: 8952, 8898, 3023, 3069 and 3115 Not Caught Yet: 3008 but there were some Heritage Units involved in wrecks with them ended up being Repaired however CP 7011 after the CPKC Merger was Scrapped after a Derailement.
My local railroad in Kentucky has units painted for the UK and Cardinal sports teams and units painted to honor the U.S Veterans. The railroad is Paducah & Louisville you should do a video on them and their special unit locomotives.
I don't know if you have any pics or video of this unit, but I remember riding on 5313 heading west out of Winnipeg with my Dad, probably in the early 90s. He snuck me on and told me that I might have to hide in the bathroom if the trainmaster (or whatever other term he used) had to come out. I may have mentioned this before, but I'm old and forget when and where I leave these comments. The house I grew up in backed onto the CN mainline near Bournais, which I think I've seen in your videos. My Dad used to throw stuff off and grab it later. Water bottles, brooms, shovels, gloves... I always loved seeing the rail grinders doing their thing. The ditches often caught fire too, but I think that even happened from regular trains too. I often wondered how bad a derailment would be that close to our house, especially at the speeds most went by.
i dont know why but i wished (for some odd reason) for trains to have "hit tallies" on the sides of the units just below the numbers, just as a show of how many incidents the unit has had since it was built. such as a car for a train v car collision, a deer for...you know, etc. no clue why. i just wanted it
The only two heritage units I’ve ever seen in my entire life were METX No.211 (CB&Q) and the Amtrak 50th Anniversary Unit. I’ve seen the former a few times and the latter only once.
it will be a while till i get to see one of these in North America, but i've noticed some railways abroad are taking this practice up too. The Slovak Railways (ZSSK) has around five Class 350 (out of a total twenty) locomotives painted in previous paint schemes that were used from 1974 to 2019. thats just one example, i noticed it in Germany, Poland, Czechia, Austria, Indonesia, Japan, to name a few... i'd deffo like to see it more oftenly as its a piece of history on wheels essentially, its not just nice to see for railfans and nostalgics, but it certainly pays respects to its past. very good video! i subscribed.
14:10 the scheme for the SP Heritage unit is based off an original SP paint scheme like that seen on their Daylight passenger service and not based on the SP "bloody-nose" paint scheme because the bloody-nose paint scheme looks a bit bland
I hope you don't get mad Winnipeg Railfann but Norfolk Southern technically has 21 heritage units. The extra unit is NS 1030. Now even though there is no special paint job it is basically considered the 30th anniversary unit. I've only seen it once but it is still cool and it was supposedly in a picture with its heritage brothers.
I am SO MAD!!! just kidding, yeah I completely forgot about him, kinda skipped it cause it's not really painted in anything special like say, 1073 or something like that lol
Iowa Interstate 516 is to commemorate the company’s 30 years of service. It’s an ES44AC painted in bright rock island red and yellow with Iowa Interstate lettering.
Well the SP scheme was made to look like the Daylight scheme the SP had before the bloody nose era, yeah? Like the Katy locomotive was that red scheme they had.

UP’s 6 heritage units are a mix of the railroad’s paint schemes so 1996 for example has a Black Widow Nose and a Daylight side.
Interesting detail I noticed was most of CSX's heritage units are numbered after the year that particular railroad started operation.
That Maroon and Grey scheme is 🤤

For Norfolk Southern, 1700 SD45-2 also repainted into Erie Lackawanna

Well the SP scheme was made to look like the Daylight scheme the SP had before the bloody nose era, yeah? Like the Katy locomotive was that red scheme they had.
That's a great story!
I'm pretty sure the SP paint that they used for the heritage unit was the "Daylight" livery, so that was a real paint scheme.
