  • This is the ultimate desk Directors Cut edition...only 6 months late... and there are still editing issues... forgiveness please! This is the version with all the details! EVERY. LAST. DETAIL. For all of 2020 I have been working from home and wanted a proper desk. In a typical day I might do video editing, animation, product design, voice recording and editing, graphic design, VR experience development, and I might even make a few drawings in the process. My perfect desk is the one that makes all of that happen without too much clutter. I set out to design and build the ultimate productivity solution.
    To pull that off the desk features a monitor stand for a 4K 32” monitor and 2 secondary monitors, A 5.1 surround sound system, in-desk A/C power and USB charging, a custom USB 3.0 Hub and an easy access wireless charger, a large drawer for all the random stuff I keep by my side, a shelf for a virtual reality headset with a place to store its cable, adjustable legs (sit-stand desk), and with all this stuff cable management is a high priority. It’s a lot to pack into a desk.
    For this build I designed 2 different styles of cable guides and clips to effectively manage over 20 cables running through the desk. A custom USB hub is another 3D printed part that made it into the final desk. During the process of the build I also designed and used multiple functional 3D printed tools and attachments. It was quite a build!
    It makes a great gaming desk as well. It needed to be very sturdy to support all those graphics cards!

    This episode’s featured design is “Stay Vigilant - Remember Chicxulub”
    It reminds us to #RememberChicxulub. That’s the name of the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs. It can be hard to see a killer asteroid heralding towards earth. So just remember to stay vigilant! Keep your eyes to the skys! Promote asteroid impact awareness. IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!
    It’s serious but it’s also a joke… NASA and other agencies are constantly scanning space for large dangerous objects and the likelihood of impact in the next few hundred years is LOW. GOOD NEWS! The directors cut is finally here! It really sums up the year 2020 for me... way behind schedule, full of errors and omissions, and way, way too long! Many thanks to all of my friends, family, and you subscribers that helped me get through this complete mess of a year. I really couldn't have done it without you all. I could not have possibly imagined hitting 7000 subs in year one of this channel. I promise to have lots more original content coming to you very soon. I wish to you all a happy and healthy rest of your year as well as a dramatically improved 2021!

Ur taking the time to create such quality content showcasing what (and how) you've done, along with providing plans, abso rocks. Only thing I'm missing is a link to donate--if I needed a desk such as this and was making, I wouldn't feel right unless throwing at least something your way! Great job! I live thé functional design and detailed attention to cable management. I will say though that the placement of the surround speakers and subwoofer cause me pain in my home theatre hobby. Surround speakers must be behind you to function correctly and give an immersive experience.
    Otherwise, fantastic work! I’ll have to peruse the plans.

      Fair enough. The everything-in-one desk does have some down sides.
      The desk is still working really well. The way that I laminated the top wasn't quite right tho... it did split in one place. It was risky.

    A hint for painting things with a brush. Don't start a area with touching the bristles to the board just anywhere always tip off a certain direction. So kind of what I mean is start the area your finishing or straitening the brush strokes start at a edge and go to the area your overlapping tipping off at the over lap. Don't start or like touch the brush at the overlap and then go to the edge of your applied product. Start at the furthest edge and go back towards the overlap tipping off once you have overlapped the coat. Think of tipping of as when you are writing something when your pen is at the end of its movement you pull the pen off the paper and it goes to a fine tip. Same thing with painting anything. So let me kind of reword it in a easier way. Say I am painting a 3 inch wide piece of trim at 8 foot long. You can start on either end but the same applies just reversed depending on what side you start on. So you start to apply product to the piece of trim and say you/I start at the left side of the trim. You apply the coat say 2 feet at a time. Then when doing the final straightening stroke of the brush stroke you would start from the far LEFT the beginning of the piece of trim and then pull to the RIGHT tipping off the brush bristles. That is the first 2 foot section the rest is the other direction. You then apply the second 2 feet section of product you start your brush stroke at the far right area of applied product pull the brush to the LEFT then tip off. Then apply the next 2 foot section of product. Brush from RIGHT to LEFT same way start at the RIGHT of the applied 2 foot section pull brush to the LEFT and tip off overlapping like 2 or so inches. What this does is make it to where you don't see the spot where you touch the piece of trim it will look like long brush stroke at the end. Then you go to the final 2 foot section doing the same thing. Apply the product however you do and finish stroke it pulling from the RIGHT to LEFT tipping of brush bristles to the left at the 2 inch overlap. It is kind of confusing but just think of the way your brushing and the way the brush will in a way take away some product where you touch the brush to the piece of trim if you were to just start anywhere simply brushing back and forth. It will cause a thin spot where you touch down with the brush. In other words you will see the area where you touched the brush to the trim or whatever your painting. You always start at the end of the applied product working back to the overlap and tip off at the overlapping area you will never see where you touched the brush to the trim or wall or whatever doing it like this. I made a description kind of down below.
    |- - - ->| > first section start at the edge brushing to the right tipping off to the right>
    |- - - - -<

    Really nice work as usual. Few Qs:
    1. Wouldn't you prefer the big PC below the desk so you avoid hearing its noises and so you get all that extra space for storing junk on?
    2. What is the experience of having the sub-woofer positioned off to the left like? Wouldn't it be better central and below?

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Andrew! I had considered the below the desk mounting option but with the sit-stand legs I would have needed to make a bolt-on rack that would allow the top to be assembled first and then attach the PC shelf from underneath the legs. This would have been possible but it wasn't quite how I wanted to assemble things. I also want to design a PC case at some point and I would want it on top of the desk where I can look at it/ photograph it.
      As far as the 5.1 surround goes, the sub-woofer sounds carry well from most any position. The sound waves reverberate through the whole desk so the volume on the sub is actually quite low. This particular system also seems to produce much of the base and overall volume from the center sound bar. This is probably because the center bar could be purchased separately to act as the whole sound system.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I quite like it myself!
      All are Dell monitors and they are 6 years old now. The center is a 32" (UP3216Q) and the sides are sub-HD 20"s (P2016t). The new generation doesn't look like they fit together quite as nicely as the older models. Ebay has all of these if you are willing to deal with used monitors... hopefully not packaged terribly.
      The 4K has 3 dead pixels after 6 years, not bad but not perfect either.

      @@The3DHandyman Thanks :) maybe I'll find some here. Best fits I found so far was a dell S3221QS (height 450mm, UHD) plus Dell P2222H (width 487mm, FHD), so using the 2222 in landscape is almost 3cm difference in height. I'm wondering why companies do not match some monitors this way, because a lot of people really like this 3-monitor solution - for gaming as well as for business.

      @The3DHandyman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing new unfortunately. All monitors are 6 or 7 year old Dells. The downside is that the side monitors are sub-HD 19" screens. This makes for a very large resolution gap between the main monitor and the sides. They do look nice next to one another though!

      That screen configuration (called PLP) being an obsession of mine as well, I can share my setup as well if you want.
      It's even more ancient that @The 3D Handyman 's butI have never been able to replace it (and believe me I've been looking, and I still am)
      Basically it's :
      - a center Dell U3011- 30" WQXGA (2560 * 1600 16:10) 60Hz
      - two side ViewSonic VP201b - 20" UXGA (1600 * 1200 4:3) 60 Hz
      Resolution, pixel pitch and panel size are all very very close so it's near perfect in this respect and to my knowledge it's the only configuration that matches this closely. But the rest is very limited due to this setup's age (U3011 is 12 years old, VP201b are vintage at this point) :
      - obviously no 4k, no HDR, no high refresh rates, no adaptive sync
      - VP201b are TFT which makes color consistency with the IPS 3011 impossible (and I've tried using Spyderr calibrators)
      - They offer DVI input only so I'm using converters and have to carefully choose my video cards when upgrading
      - also they are old and I've had to change capacitors in both of them, with the older one failing again not long ago
      I wish someone still made 20" 4:3 monitors so I could at least upgrade those (I can live without 4K i think), but aside from Eizo at 700 - 800$ a pop, there's nothing.
      A shame really because that sort of setup is just perfect for me.

    Did you consider hanging the PC from the desk, rather than sitting it on top?
    I'm thinking about replacing my desk next year, and I like your build overall, but don't really want to give up the desk space for my PC case...Any reason not to come up with a devious way of mounting it underneath?
    (other than that all the ports become harder to reach)

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was considered but the renderings looked odd. There were also a lot of questions about how to assemble the PC shelf around the sit-stand legs and still give me easy access to the case. I also though about having a matching cabinet that sat next to the desk where the PC could would stay. In the end I went the easy route because I figure I wont always have a huge desktop in the future. Thanks for all the comments!

      @@GiovanyFernandez I'm not sure what power options they might have but it wouldn't surprise me if they had a 220 model. In general CyberPower is a decent brand. I have also worked with APC battery backups and found those to be a fairly reliable. Those were put to use in high temperatures before failures started popping up (37C sustained for weeks at a time). That may have been to much to ask of them, but they are pretty solid in general.
