This project really captures the first-order retrievability Adam Savage often talks about
To some extend yes, but not completely. I feel that it is a perfect compromise between Adam's and Jamie's point of view.
Adam Savage's first-order retrievability is encapsulated within a broader paradigm that is ''visual cacophony''...more simply put, if I don't see it then it doesn't exist. That trumps all else.
He often said that drawers are where things go to die. Within a few notable exception for him like his machinist tools and his marking tools, most of it is reachable and visible at all time. In his first version, it was a toolbox where most tools where at hand reach without having to move another one. Nowadays, in his shop. it really really evolved into a broader philosophy.
First order retrievability is also about if I need a hammer near tool X and a hammer near tool y, I will get two hammers for each spot. In a stark contrast, in Jamie's shop all hammers were at the hammer spot on the shop. That back and forth drove Adam crazy because it prevented him to go into a flow. Jamie used that time to rethink every aspect of his aspect through.
Now, in both cases...they had huge shop compared to our average hobby shops.
Coming back to this video, Adam savage would love a lot of the implementations, but might not like the tool chest part.
Needless to say, I love the project and I get inspired by all makers to make stuff and organize.
@@simonmarcoux5879 all good points of course. But I think the genius of Zack's new system is that it is compatible with both paradigms of organization. I have a suspicion that as the post reorganization entropy settle in, the Voidstar lab will again settle into a more Adam like state, ie with the things in drawers closer to where it is used. But, since the original design had this in mind (ie easy moving, the grouping trays, labels on top) all relevant parts or tools stay together when moved, visible when needed, stacked and stowed when not. It allows for the best of both worlds.
I think different organizational structures suit different people's making style, but this system can adapt to both

These are perfection... So much so, I got every STL sorted into folders. And then loaded every design file into Fusion. Couldn't take any risk of it not all existing locally, and my mind simply wouldn't let it go when it tried to move on without doing that. (And I do use some of Chappel's work in household drawers and such, but that's a different application IMO.)

I work in a warehouse and the magnum sharpies are reserved for people who work on the dock stacking pallets in the vans. I once found one of them lying around somewhere in the warehouse and I kept it for a week, asking periodically of random coworkers if they wanted to touch my big thing. Since then I have a fondness for them. The mention of them in this video greatly gruntled me.

Still need cardiologist appointment for ritalin though.
@@satibel there are other stimulants fwiw, my childhood psychiatrist had me on focalin, and when my tolerance built up to max dose not being effective, vyvanse, which was nice at first until tics became so intense we had to go back to focalin.
I have my concerns about how it affected my health, but thats a whole thing itself.
Anyway, Im so glad you were able to access diagnostics! They can be harder for adults to get access to, but it helps to go in and self-advocate for it being seriously considered etc.
Self-dx is a useful tool for figuring shit out and getting coping mechanism and finding community, but for meds ya gonna need that official dx.

@@ianflowforever amphetamines e.g vyvanse and amphetamines - like, e.g. (dex)-methylphenidate (ritalin and focalin) all require cardiologist checkup here (I think it technically doesn't but most doctors will refuse prescription without)
Also it's not reimbursed because I haven't had them prescribed before 16.
I hope this system gets the attention it deserves! REALLY impressed with the incredible amount of thought that has gone into it. I hate having a million different systems to hold things. I have CNC Mill/ Lathe parts in a huge number of Dollar General Tupperware containers, DeWault click together boxes and small parts organizers. I find the DeWault system pieces I have works well enough and is easy to 3D print inserts. But they cost money just to get a product I have to modify to use and they really weren't intended for my purposes! I'll certainly be trying the Gridfinity! The only issue I see in my personal application is lack of sufficient printers to make it in less than 1000 years! Certainly going to try though!
This is the kind of thing I needed. I wasn't sure what it would be, but I think this is it.
After a lifelong struggle learning to be organized, I've found that finding traditional storage solutions in hardware and dollar stores is extremely close to what I need, but has a lot of small annoyances that render it more of a hassle than an answer. I'm a very amateur tinkerer, model builder, and a dedicated musician. The amount of tools, beads, chips, plectrums, and assorted odds and ends I'm trying to keep neat are gonna feel right at home in my spaces with this system. Not to mention, dealing with neurological barriers to staying organized is gonna be way easier when I can customize it to fit my life.
I'm gonna be using this a lot. Thank you, genuinely.

The amount of thought that went into the usability, practicality and functionality of this storage system is amazing. Zach's higher functioning brain operates so fast, that the slightest distraction could equate to the loss of volumes of information. Analytical but brilliantly creative.

The thing that amazes me is how well this meshes with Adam Savage's workshop organization ethos, which is "First order of retrievability" - everything he has is on display like this, on open racks and organized. I'm really excited to try printing these to help organize my workshop. I have a lot of little things like pliers, nippers, soldering tools, and other fine tools that would really benefit from this system.
I purchased Alex's system and am printing parts. I am now supporting your channel too. Great that you mention him. If anyone has a problem, support the people you like! I do.

Love this and I'm printing some things now! One suggestion would be to design it such that the bottom holes do not need support to print cleanly. The Voron team has a nice method to do this by inscribing the hole within 2 squares which end up getting bridged and then the hole placed on top. No post processing needed and they print cleanly.

I feel like the round bit in the front to make it so you can scoop out the bits is an amazing optimization over the "stolen" idea. I want this on everything now. Seriously, capitalists, feel free to sell me less product for the same price, if it has this curved bit to help me scoop out the product.
I've seen other designs have it, but the scoops are so tiny! I ran the numbers, and the difference between a 5mm and 25mm scoop is like 5% of capacity
Yes! This is why I have a cash register coin tray on my workbench for most commonly used zip screws. The scoop is worth all of it.

When I designed my storage boxes, I made the grid on the boxes half the size as the grid system so you can place the boxes in half increments. It allows more variety of container sizes and placements in drawers. Good video.
Wow! These organizers are literally what's been on my todo list to make. I have Alexandre's organizers for my drawers, but wanted something like it but for the desktop. You just save me hours of work that I might have never got around to, thank you.

I use my ES121, all the time. I didn't use it for the first 2 years of ownership but then I printed a holder to keep it within finger's reach on my electronics bench and now I use it constantly. Great tool. It's not worth getting out to use, most times, but is absolutely brilliant if it's right there and handy.
This looks awesome, I'll make sure to save it to a playlist so that I can come back in 10 years when I can actually afford this kind of hobby, and hope that the files are still available online then.

My bathroom looks like this. A 3d printed highly organized yet functional masterpiece. I did it in navy blue PLA. Its like organizational art. I focused more on using some complex grometries highlighting the functionaility of the 3d printer. The glass front bins was a wonderful touch, kudos on that.
A bathroom would probably be better served with using the 3d printer to make molds and using the molds to make silicone parts that can be sterilized from time to time. But, that's just me and it is a bit more involved.

This is incredible for people with adhd and/or ocd (me). I can always remember the location of items but never what they look like. Not only does Adam savage talk about first order retrievability, it's a common practice in the military too. What filament are you printing with? My guess is PETG.

I just have a desperate love for modular storage that's so thoughtfully designed for humans to actually /physically interact with and use them/. This is the one project that is genuinely making me consider buying a 3d printer. you just earned a like, subscribe, AND a bell. :) I will absolutely be putting some of these in my studio.

I've been needing to organize better so I decided to use this for my office junk drawer. Before I even had half of my shit in the bins I started planning out what I needed for the communal junk drawer. This is a seriously good project and it's slowly creeping into the rest of my drawers and organizers. Not only has this restarted my love of 3d printing (and convinced me to build a Voron), it has also kicked off an organizational obsession that is helping me actually finish projects.
Pro tip: print out like 50 bases and just superglue them to your existing organizers first, that way you can get things in order while you wait for the proper ones to print. Plus, some happen to fit **perfectly** within the grid and don't need a custom design.

This entire project feels like taking a DeWalt or other high-end modular storage container and passing it through Adam Savage's "first order retrievability" criteron. Which is meant to be a compliment, so I hope it sounds like one. It also exactly meshes with my counter-argument to one of Maker's Muse's concerns about the recent AnkerMake commercial. In yon commercial, Anker shows a parent have an idea and go straight to 3d printing it, to make a toy for their child. Angus points out that this only works if one can 3d model, and the weakness of the whole "have an idea and then make your own bespoke item" concept is that 3d modelling is a skill that must be learnt.
(Learnt is also a word, if you're collecting them. At least for those of us who aren't Americans.)
My counter-argument is that there's room in-between "I did the whole process myself" and "make the mass produced item work" for things like this: a project where someone else has done the heavy 3d design work lifting, but where I can take the results and make something that fits my specific needs better and more flexibly than a mass produced object.
Anyway: thanks for the video! I enjoyed it, it was a good way to spend 20 minutes! I've definitely got some uses for your tool storage stuff popping into my mind. Now I just face the two big roadblocks of: figuring out what's going to be useful, and freeing up printer time and filament to actually print tools and not other stuff. :)

I love that he could have just made a bunch of different sized boxes like most people, but instead went so far as to make specific boxes for weird sharpie shapes and glue sticks and a million other things. He went the extra light year nevermind mile.
Once he had the outside for various numbers of squares, making the inside individualize was probably not that much work.

Absolutely brilliant! This would definitely solve my storage problems without pigeon holing me into a rigid storage thingy.
As an ex chef with OCD I can appreciate this greatly, we have a French term.. Mise en place... which basically means... everything in its place.
It is a philosophy of arranging your work area so that you can work as effectively and efficiently as possible.
One thing I find that helps immensely is to work out how to minimise the amount of tools you need to do a certain job, it is easy to have information overload when you are trying to perform a task and you have too many things around you.
Also consistency, try not to change things too much, find a good way that works for you then stick to it, you can modify it once you have become comfortable with it.
Take a step back, I have found that the only way to move forwards is to take steps back. It is easy to find yourself in a position where you can't see the wood for the trees.
Force yourself to view things objectively, that is where reality exists, not in a subjective view point. You can either be lost in a crowd of people or standing on a hill looking at the whole crowd.

I've been putting off getting a 3d printer, thinking of one as just a useful, but unnecessary, toy. This video prompted me to research useful prints. Thanks to this, it's now extremely close to the top of my list; in the vicinity of food and gas. It's my next major purchase, immediately ahead of a welder.

Aside from the other observations and commentary that covers most of the awesomeness of this project (and nods to Alexandre Chappel) I just wanted to loudly applaud the monumental "Wall o' Text @6:42 ... That is totally worth the rest of the video on its own... I have no problem with a little short lived "protection" for something new and innovative to give a chance to earn a bit of profit from it... but I hate those that hoard it for decades (like the 3D printing patent) that stifled creativity for so long... There are a few rare fields where maintaining a hold is practical, like in the latest wanton changing of movies and stories because certain people are too lazy or creative to make new things (looking at you Amazon, DC, Marvel, et cetera) nothing wrong with adding into it, but there are "rules" to play in those worlds... Rock on Mister Zack!
I strongly appreciate the tiny anti-IP rant in the middle of the video, and I'm looking forward to a full video on it eventually

This is fantastic. I love Alexandre Chappel's system (did a desk with it) but gridfinity being open source, having a standard grid size, and standardized stackability is a major win. I would love to see the base grids and a few standard trays done in openscad for easy customization.
Chappel's system is sweet. I did get the Master Plan version
I've actually been trying to do this with cadquery. Inspired by Alexandre's design actually. But been working on it on and off, and it's still not there yet.

Every moment of this video is "here's how to make your shop adhd friendly", including the "don't worry about analysis paralysis, here's how to approach knowing what you need". Making things visible, reducing inhibitors/demotivators that may not seem like that big of a deal to others (ex. "having to dig through all these clear plastic bins and pop them open, hoping you don't drop it or screw up the dividers."
