Sublimation On Glass Blurring Over Time

  • Some possible causes of sublimated images on vinyl over glass blurring over time.
    This is an on-going trial with several experimental processes to both duplicate this to find root causes and also to find better procedures and/or materials to prevent this from happening.
    Use of clear vinyl, as opposed to white has eliminated this phenomenon, but will then require an application of white vinyl over the back unless backlit.

    You came to my rescue again. I pressed about 20 dollar tree cutting boards with the white oracal 651 about 4 months ago and they are ALL blurry now. I almost cried! I'm glad I hadn't sold any yet. I'll try the clear oracal and see what happens. Thank you so much for this video Roger, you are a true gem. 💙

    Thanks for the update! Just ordered some Oracal 651 clear, as you mentioned in the video and used in May, and it's now October, as you also mentioned. It's amazing how people just don't listen. Or maybe it's the new school system.

    You can remove the sublimation and reuse the glass trivets. Just soak in warm water for a little while, take a putty knife, lift a corner and peel it off, it comes off in one sheet. I just did that on 8 of them and re-used them. Wasn’t sure if it would work but had nothing to loose.

    Hi! Thanks for the great video. I've learned a lot from this and your other videos! i'm wondering if you ever did a test of using white spray paint after sublimating on the clear vinyl? I'm playing around with the cutting boards now and am tempted to try this, but thought i'd see if you have any insight before I do. Thanks so much!

    I agree with Luce Moore - Thank you for all the information you share with us. That is interesting that it changes over time. Do you think it starts shrinking away from the glass over time? I will totally use the clear vinyl as I would hate to sell and then months later it starts changing. Also I'm curious if you spray painted the clear with a white paint on back. Have you ever done that? Again THANK YOU!

    • @rogersshop

      It does not shrink, but does bleed and blur in some cases. Have not tried painting. Might try that to see how it comes out.

    Hi Roger…love watching your videos. I’ve been waiting to get my heat press before trying one. Which clear vinyl did you use. Your link directs me to the white oracle. Thanks for the informative videos 🙂. And how old are the ones you pressed with the clear? 3 months?

    Roger - it's been a year now since you tried the clear vinyl. Could you let me know if your image is still clear? I had trouble with the 651 white vinyl blurring like everyone else. Before I spend additional money on the clear vinyl - please advise how your test piece is looking now a year later. Thank you so much.

      Still a good image, but has NOT been exposed to the sun. I have found that this accelerates blurring and fade if exposed to the sun for a period of time.

    If you have the ones that blur made on white vinyl, can you reheat them and pry off the vinyl and remake them, or is it impossible to more trouble than it is worth?

    Do you heat press the clear vinyl down or just put vinyl down then sub print and then press them both all at once at 385 for 180 seconds, then after cooled place white vinyl on and not heat it? Also is the print up when pressing or the glass up? Thank you

    • @rogersshop

    Did a comment on your old video with the white vinyl. So I'm now seeing this one and wondering if the lamination paper would work better than any type of vinyl? Please review my other comment on your other video. I would be very interested if you could do a test of the lamination paper. And if it's trimmed to size prior to heat is there any shrinkage.

    • @rogersshop
      @rogersshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Laminate does work, so long as you do not use the glass for a hot pan trivet or run it through a dishwasher. It may shrink when applied (?). Good idea for a video...........

    • @cherimccain12
      @cherimccain12 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply here. Another question- Is it possible the spray you use could be a cause for the blurring? Perhaps the pigment used in the white vinyl reacts to that whereas, it not being in the clear vinyl, it may not react the same. Hope that makes sense.

    • @rogersshop
      @rogersshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cherimccain12 No, it is not from the Rapid Tac. It is more a result of pressure/time/temperature. I have since found a way to eliminate this chance of blurring completely by using laminate: th-cam.com/video/ldVhUumeQDc/w-d-xo.html You get a preview as this does not go live until 1/10

    as you show the two cutting boards next to each other it seems that the glass you are using is different - the ones you say were on clear vinyl look like they are on a smooth glass and not the dimpled glass that the dollar tree cutting boards are. The blurry looking ones all look to be on dimpled glass. ??????
