  • This is a test of the 100/125 gr, 6 blade ARACHNID Broadhead.
    Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Arachnid posted in parenthesis as well.
    Total Arachnid 100gr Score: 86.13 = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The Arachnid got 16 pts.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 17 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (3" = 7 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (3" = 7 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1" = 3 pts)
    3. Sharpness (20%, 18.25 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 150 grs=10/10=9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +75 grs=8.5/10=7.65 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (8/10=1.6 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 15.83 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.5" = 6.5 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (57 layers=7.33 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 18.05 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (3.5 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (2.55 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
    (total cut greater than 2.5" = +1 pts)
    Price of Arachnid: $15/head
    Grading Scale:
    90-100 10 Golden Arrows
    85-90 9
    80-85 8
    70-80 7
    60-70 6

    Mr. Lusk your reviews are second to none. One thing I think is important and not in any reviews is how noisy a broadhead is. Anyway you can add that to reviews? Thank you for all the work you do reviewing these broadheads.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've thought about that, but it's too difficult to quantify. I use Blazers with a 4 degree helical twist on them, so they're already fairly noisy as it is.

      Thank you. I will note, I've tested 2 other models of their heads--those vids are coming soon--and there were some serious quality control issues--blades not fitting snug in a few of them. But in this pack of this model, they were fine. Just something to look out for.

  • @pensnut08

    I didn't think the blades would hold up at all! And that hole through the steel plate was impressive.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. Now, they did get pretty nicked up after only 2 shots into the steel, whereas a head like an Exodus will have zero signs of wear, after even 5 shots. But still better than I expected.

  • @stick__shooter
    @stick__shooter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool head. I've found myself gravitating towards single piece machined heads after this hunting season. The Exodus performed great on two deer, and Magnus Black Hornet was great on a turkey, but man are they a pain to sharpen. I ordered some TOTA heads and their sharpener to try out, and may look at the Ozcut 3 blade and Annihilator and the Staysharp 344. I'd try the SS3 but it's only offered in 100 grain and I shoot 125 or 150 grain heads mainly.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there are pros & cons to each style. I like sharpening single piece heads too...but then I also like just replacing the blades with brand new razor sharp ones.

    things are going back old school, when i first started deer hunting as a little kid back in the early 80's my dad bought us kolpin twister broadheads. they were 6 blade heads and he did the first cement block test i ever saw with one, it held together but had a bent ferrule also rendering it useless.

    It be interesting to test down range noise levels....that's one of the main reasons I shoot expandables....I try to use quietest vanes I can find...wouldn't make sense to put a whistle on the tip

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've considered doing that, but my helical blazers make a lot of noise already, so it's difficult to separate broadhead noise from vane noise. Personally, I don't worry about arrow flight noise at all. I do worry about shot noise, cause it's static and the animal can often pinpoint the source. But a moving thing could be a bird for all the animal knows.

    Anderson archery made 8-3 blade broadheads in the 80's they were awesome looking but you needed 80+ pounds to get penetration. This is none vented micro reincarnation 👍. My friend still has the 6 blade in his broadhead collection he shot deer with.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Worth a try. I typically like broadheads with a wider cut, as they tend to produce greater blood trails. But this sure does cut a lot of tissue.

    This is actually a pretty good head!!

  • @oldgrumpyhunter
    @oldgrumpyhunter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My first impression was that "That is a weird-looking head." That had to be one of if not the sharpest heads you have tested before shooting. When you said that the feral was aluminum I was expecting a large failure when hitting the concrete block but was I surprised. Why do some manufacturers make heads that fall apart when trying to attach them to the shaft? I can see trying to change the head in the field for whatever reason.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. Good comment. The length of the ferrule and the depth of the threadings and the type of aluminum all make a big difference in hard impact shots.

    Nice video John! One thing you didn't talk about was the rotation in the gel for the Arachnid. It did appear to have rotated (I think I saw some)
    Suggestion: For the Angled Shot, which you added this year, are you giving it strictly just a pass/fail grade? How about a 1-5 rating based on how badly it "kicked" upon entry? Could this possibly have some merit between different BH's? Also, how about a view of the "blow-out" of the back of the MDF?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It didn't have any real noticeable rotation; the blades are a bit thin to produce that with the single beveling. I score the angled shot on a 10 point scale, then adjust it for 2 points. But every head I've tested has zipped right thru with zero kick out.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I shoot many different heads. The ones that perform especially well in my testing, make it into my quiver. I typically take about a dozen animals per year, and use 5 or 6 different heads to do it.

  • @michaelrosa5410
    @michaelrosa5410 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    First I’ve ever seen of a single bevel on a broadhead. With the A2 broadhead you know it’s going to smash bone. With the single bevel you’re expecting a circular cut as what we see in COC single bevels do. The hole was round and looked like blood would flow out. Well built broadhead if you like broadheads. I’ve moved onto COC heads myself.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, the blades are really too thin for the single beveling to create any significant rotation.

    • @michaelrosa5410
