  • This is a test of the 100 gr, "4" blade Endgame Broadhead, by NAP. Use the Stay Sharp Guide for Replaceable Blades to resharpen them.
    Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Endgame posted in parentheses as well.
    Total Endgame Score: 84.60 = 9 Golden Arrows (rounded up)
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The Endgame got 16 pts.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 13.25 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.19" + .54" = 1.73"/2.5 x 7 = 4.84 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (4.84 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.19"/2 x 6 = 3.57 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 16.5 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 300 grs=9/10=8.1 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +100 grs=8/10=7.2 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pt) Use the Stay Sharp Guide Sharpener for Replaceable Blades.
    4. Penetration (20%, 19.75 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8.75" = 8.75 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (73 layers=10/10 = 9 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 18.9 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9/10=4.5 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (8/10 = 2.4 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
    Total Score: 84.60 pts = 9 Golden Arrows (rounded up)
    Price = $18.33/head
    Grading Scale:
    90-100 10 Golden Arrows
    85-90 9
    80-85 8
    70-80 7
    60-70 6

    Nap Thunderhead has been piling up deer for well over 40 yrs. I still have one engraved with my permit number for hunting on base. Its from 1986. Could still kill a deer with it. I shoot the all steel Thunderhead 170 now and they work great on deer. There are probably better heads for larger than deer sized animals. And these new Naps look great. Maybe a thicker removable blade like todays standard and they could be perfect. I knew it was going to stick in that concrete. Very similar point to the sevr that crushed that block. Amazing the abuse these new heads can take these days. Great reviews. Thanks.

      I started out with thunderheads too..always blew thru everything..deer and hogs using the good ol Easton 2117’s lol shooting a whopping 245 fps..but as my bow got faster they starter flying erratically..they just need tuning..when you get them over 275 fps..I went on a 25+yr search for the holy grail Broadhead and still haven’t found it lol..I love watching these tests John does.

      @@ec9697 most heads that are fixed need a bow that is in pretty good tune to hit the same as field points. Thats why expandable heads are so popular. Slap a whisker biscuit on close and let them rip. And the expandable heads are pretty darn good too. Ive used them too through the years. Never had a failure. But I have so many Thunderhead packs here that I may never need to buy another head for the rest of my life. Ive shot the 100s fast snd light. The 125s on just about every arrow ive owned snd now the 170 heads on heavies. They all have been excellent. The 170s shoot in the same 1 inch bull at 60 yards with my 350 fps xbow too. Heavy arrows on it too. Bow shoots 400 with regular arrows but the heavier ones are flying so good. I shot a deer with it last yr coming straight at me from the ground and it hit the center of the chest and exited a hind qtr. went 30 yards. Im sure there are better heads but I really have no reason to change. The Lusk vids are great to see all the new concepts and how tough these things are now. Ive bent tips and blades on my thunderhead kills but they worked. All I ask of them is to work one time. And they do. The new NAP looks amazing. If my wife or kids stick a pack in my stocking I will definitely give them a go. Good hunting every one.

    Troubles me to think that this head being a GREAT penetrating head, was as dull as ANY head i've seen you test this year John ? Wonder how much better this head does penetrating if it were in a 200 range sharpness from the get go with some tweaking to the sharpness ?
    It's clear the effort in design was to the flanged ferrule to create a larger hole for the rest of the head to follow thru within that hole channel. The blades seem to be inferior steel,losing sharpness quickly, and not really doing much of anything besides maybe sterring the whole head a tad. The meat of the whole head is with the ferrule bulge.
    Put some real blades on this head that are hardened or even on a single bevel, and you might have a destroyer of a head. I call the blades as a weakness. But a interesting head no doubt.
    Great job John. Keep them coming !

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment, Mike. You always do a great analysis. Many people think sharpness affects penetration a lot more than it actually does. I once took 2 broadheads and dulled one with a file--like butter knife dull--and the penetration was almost the same as the super sharp one. Edge integrity--like not chipping and chattering--affects penetration a lot more.

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures But sharpness in cut brings more hemorrhaging I would assume which means better blood, every drop of blood matters in some instances.

  • @YoureSoVane
    @YoureSoVane ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I want a ferrule like that but made out of a better steel, and the blades to be single bevel. The broadheads should assist the spin of the vanes in flight, not resist. S7 would be a great choice for that ferrule, and a good HSS for the blades.
    Cutting blade thickness is a greater predictor of penetration than the length/width angle. Bevel angle is also a significant predictor, but both come with durability drawbacks.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I've found that a thick tip usually opens up a nice hole for the shaft to glide thru--so there is less friction on the shaft. It's opposite what many think.

    So what do you think sir? Worth putting in the quiver for you personally? You've got alot of archery experience with multiple types of animals. I've been looking for a good all around broadhead really like the stout look of that tip and it seems to penatrate very well. But maybe the lack of wound channel may cause some tracking issues? Either way accuracy is king but I'm just curious on your thoughts. Worth the buy? Or no?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
