  • This is a test of the 100 gr Gravedigger Mechanical Hybrid broadhead, by Bloodsport.
    Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    Gravedigger 100 gr Total Score: 85.85 = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 16.44 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.5" = 4.2 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.75" = 7 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.75" = 5.25 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 18.75 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 187.5 grams (avg of both blades) = 10/10 = 9 pts
    & Edge Retention (9%, +62.5 grams (avg of both blades) = 8.75 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (5/10=1 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 15.45 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.5" = 6.5 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    54 layers= 6.95 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (10/10 = 2 pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 17.2 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (9/10 = 10.8 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (8/10 = 4 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (8/10=2.4 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS:
    +1 excellent flight
    +1 No O ring
    TOTAL SCORE: 85.58 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price: $11.67/head

    I used blood sport arrows and the grave digger head years ago. I thought the quality was great, considering they were inexpensive. Awesome video!

    I've done some very light testing with this head and I found it is crazy accurate. I'm cheap so I only test one head. One thing I did was tighten the mechanical blades down in the closed position so it won't mess up my target as much. I really do like the idea of loosening the blades until they can open with thick paper. Im definitely gonna use that idea.

    Wow I suspicious about the venting and how it would hold up on the concrete! Impressed!

    I used the 125s, cut on contact head. They do fly great and they perform very well. Massive cutting damage, great penetration and a really nice exit.. Deer have gone down FAST!
    I stopped using them because:
    1) I've never pulled one out of the ground and have been able to use it again.
    and
    2) The maker does NOT offer replacement blades.... Even though their website says "Whether you're looking for inserts or replacement blades, keep hunting your best with our collection of archery accessories."...
    I looked... No replacement blades. My search on their site "No results were found for "replacement blades".".

    I expected the head to explode on impact with the concrete, surprisingly did really well. Great review as always John.

    Seriously impressed. I would really consider using these. Plenty tough and I like the way the swing blades can be torqued with the tension bolt. No rubber bands to rot or break. Yep, gonna give em a try on some pigs this summer.👍👍

    I'm not a huge fan of mechanicals, but I do like this one. The last video, the Bloodflow 1.5 caused the arrow to shatter. I guess because of the size of the tip it couldn't penetrate the concrete, and bounced off. The transfer of energy was sent back into the arrow shaft. I really liked that one and I wasn't looking forward to seeing it hit that concrete. When I seen it bounce off, I looked a the slo- mo again, noticing the damage to the arrow. That thing packs a punch. It takes a lot to break them arrows.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I was using the FOC King arrows and not the FAD Eliminators. They can't handle a shot like that, especially with the extra weight of that broadhead.

    John, is there any way that you can provide a closeup of the arrow impact of your accuracy test? It's hard to tell without a close up. thanks

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've done that in my last 10 tests or so. But I already did a bunch of tests before making that adjustment, so they will also be posting in the days ahead. But since making the change, every vid will zoom in more. Either way, every head I've shot gets within a 1.5" group at 30 yds.

    Would you be open to conducting a testing on the Bloodsport Gravedigger head that is cut on contact instead of the chisel tip?

    Some things if you try to improve them,you hurt them. Proven mechanical head for several years,and work on boar hogs too. Head doesn't get the love that it really should. Partially to blame on lack of advertising on the internet. I hate mechanicals, but this is one head i'd roll the dice on over the years.

  • @yourmomma2995

      @jamesmuhlbeier9032 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @HuntsT
    @HuntsT ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe you can add shooting solid bricks instead of cinder blocks since the cinder blocks are suspect. Thanks for the video John.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the newer blocks are more normal, but I already tested a bunch with these weaker ones--still a pretty tough test for a broadhead.

    • @HuntsT
      @HuntsT ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures agreed, but in the name of "zero" penetration test. It's a great test to see if the ferrule is going to break, where will that failure occur.
