One of the nice things about the Echo was there's a surprising aftermarket for performance parts, thanks to Scion. If you don't like how they handle you can lower or stiffen them on springs, shocks, sway bars, bracing-- you can even put in the better rear suspension off the Scion XA and xB that they offered in Echo hatchbacks in other markets around the world. The front seats are also becoming a common upgrade for a lot of echo owners as they provide more side and lumbar support while looking better as well. You can even install intermittent windshield wipers that the factory never offered, simply by removing the stock from a Toyota Corolla or even a Suzuki SX4 sedan.
It's a lightweight car that provides a lot of fun without breaking the bank too badly.

my 2000 with 160k on it is the BEST car I have ever owned. Owned cars from 1960 till now. my son has a 2014 yaris hatch back. One thing it has that is a real improvement is the way the computer handles overdrive. when you are running with cruse on. if you come to a hill and it needs to drop out of overdrive it will stay out until you get up on the hill then go back in. none of the in and out in and out the echo does. with the echo you have to manually push the overdrive off button till you get over the hill then put it back on yourself. not a big deal but a nice improvement.

The Echo and Yaris (the Echo's successor) are great transportation buys. They run forever, and can be had with relatively low mileage for under $4K---that's pretty good for a car you can get 10+ years of mostly trouble-free driving out of

The only problem I ever had with my echo came as a result of an evasive swerve I had to make to avoid being hit by a semi. If you make a hard evasive maneuver at above 65mph, the dynamics of the center of gravity and the suspension and wheelbase create what's called a flugoidal oscillation, a low frequency oscillation that tends to be divergent, trying to get worse with each oscillation. This could lead to rolling the car. I didn't, but only because I knew what was happening and I forced myself not to over-react. The car calmed down and everything was fine after that. I wish my nerves calmed down as quickly as the car. I had to get off the freeway and let my adrenalin calm down. This may be why Toyota redesigned the Yaris to have a longer wheelbase, while keeping many of the features that make the Echo so lovable. They had to add more metal to the Yaris to give it better crash protection and vehicle dynamics, which did affect the fuel economy, but it was money and effort well spent. I wish that the public, and the automotive press, gave both the Echo and Yaris the credit they deserve. They're great cars and I never hesitate to recommend them, even with the evasive maneuver situation.

My 2002 automatic sedan has 303k miles. 30-35 mpg in the city. Great car. Oil, brakes, spark plugs, hoses, usual stuff. Fantastic.

Bought a 02' Echo a year or so ago, first car I ever got at a dealership. (I work for Toyota as well). It had 81k miles on it, for $3k. It was a steal for its age and condition. Flawless and clean interior, no rust, no dents etc. The worst thing about it, was it came from Arizona. So the paint was faded, and the windshield had a lot of sandblasting to it. Its a very fun car to drive (Its a manual) and I am planning on putting some love into it. Since I cannot afford or buy a new car (husband wont let me.) I will turn this into the sporty car I have always wanted. Parts are cheap as dirt. Its never let me down in performance and reliability.

Echo was made by Daihatsu of Toyota Group.
Yaris has 2 generations. The previous smaller Yaris was made by Daihatsu and was called "Daihatsu "Charade"" in Japan(please browse "Daihatsu "Charade"" on TH-cam). The bigger Yaris is made by Mazda.
However, personally I prefer the smaller Yaris to the big one because Daihatsu makes better solid econobox than Mazda did.
