    Just the fact that someone took the time and effort to devote a short film to this car speaks for itself.

    My wife got her Echo when it had 7,000 miles on it. Today it has 240,000 and has driven through California, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Arizona and Montana! Most reliable car ever! 42 MPG highway 35 city and still on the original starter and alternator! On its 3rd or 4th set of brake pads but no engine problems still!

    I admire a man who appreciates what he has and takes good care of it, instead of neglecting and then going out and buying a new one and start the process all over again. Your car in no way could ever be called a beater.

      They made 108hp at 6,000rpm, and 105ftlb of torque at 4,200 rpm. It's a 1.5L dual over-head cam inline four with variable valve timing on the intake cam, a 4-1 stainless exhaust manifold, and a plastic intake manifold for light weight and reduced heat soak for cooler operation inside the combustion chamber.
      The car weighs around 2,020-2,150lbs and has a 0-60 of 8.4-10.1 seconds depending on options and transmission (a five speed manual is quicker than the four speed automatic). Top speed is electronically limited to either 112 or 108mph, depending on source.
      They tend to lean, be blown around in crosswinds, find grooves in the road surface, and understeer a bit, but are still relatively composed compared to some other small cars.

    Respect brother. 2004 Echo 5dr Hatch over here in Ontario. Just shy of 300K and I've owned it since 2006. Second owner. Driver her hard, take good care and the car has never let me down. It's true what you said; not what you drive but how you drive it. You've gone mostly sun and dry weather in Cali, I drive in a foot of snow, salt, sand and wet roads for almost half the year. They are great little beasts that give you a lot of fun at little cost.

    Randomly popped up in my feed in 2022.
    This makes me miss my old 2000 EK Civic sedan. I miss it, I miss its simplicity and also the simplicity of the time in my life that it inhabited.
    Who knew being a carefree young guy driving around at night with this friends killing time was going to come to an end.
    Who knew those moments that came and went with passed gfs would become treasured memories.
    Who knew that you'd miss being that young guy working hard to make life better and buy better things.
    Cars have a soul, its a piece of our soul we leave behind, and I left a chunk of mine behind in a silver EK sedan.

    I presently have an echo. Had a tercel before this one. I love both cars equally for their fun to drive factor, I didn't say cool to drive. They were very inexpensive to purchase used and inexpensive to own because of low fuel consumption and low repair costs. I had 450,000 kms when I got rid of the tercel and the echo currently has 365,000 kms. They are little tanks. Thanks for putting into words what I always felt about my cars and automobile craftsmanship in general.

    This proves a very good point in cars. Yesterday I was in Quebec city and I saw a Hyundai Accent with a storage bin on the roof, a bike rack with 3 bikes on it, and many other features. It made the car look outgoing & desirable for a compact thus proving the point that less truly is more.

    I'm using a manual 2001 Echo I was handed down for pizza delivery. It's not about the speed of the car; it's how you drive it. I did a lot of driving up on mountainous logging roads with it back in high school, and now it's helped me be one of the fastest delivery drivers at my shop in the middle of a busy city. It’s a hardy car. I get kicks out of passing faster more expensive cars especially since my echo is fairly beat up. It's not the fastest car, but as time goes on it feels like a natural extension of you. Even after I buy a new car, I think I'll find some place to hold on to my beloved first car. Awesome video.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this. Only just this past August, I got my first car... Yes, an Echo. An 04' hatchback with 292,000 km. It's really a joy to drive. It obediently goes where I direct it, and actually has a little bit of gumption once it hits the higher revs. Apart from some minor MAS issues (resolved by letting it idle for a few minutes) and rattling control arm bushings it runs like a top.

The Echo has 114,000 miles and I fully expect to drive it for another 200,000 miles. The Echo will be my "work" car. My "pleasure" car is an 04 350Z Roadster.

It's really comfortable to drive. The car also got stolen from a parking lot few years back then the cops found the car back a day later all smashed up but still I didn't get rid of the car I repaired everything and I'm still driving this car and loving it. Goes great in the snow with small-wheel drive, and has more miles on it than anything else I've owned besides my Mercedes diesels. I own a 2005 Echo manual and it is basically a motor and a steering well. at 2000 pounds it is a joy to drive it hard everyday and it asks for nothing in return. There is nothing to distract me, it is simple in design and reliable, and very connected to the road compared to most cars I've driven. I'll take care of it, enjoy the trip and keep pushing it till it finally quits on me. It earned its $500 price, a long long time ago

    Im looking to get a used car. My first car was a 97 corolla. And even tho i only payed 700$ fore it. I loved it and all its gapeing rust holes. So i looked on some local craigslist type site and came acros a 2001 echo and a 1996 corolla. The echo has 275000 on it but i know it'll keep running forever. But the corolla has 155000 with only 1 prior owner. Ther both in perfect condition. So i came here looking fore some insight on the echo. And after you went on about how you come to apreciate the soul of your car. I decided i need that corolla! My old rusted out corolla looked like junk. But it ran perfect. Even after all the abuse i put on the drive line. Thank you fore helping me decide!

    I drive an '06 Scion xA, and I share the same passion. I absolutely love my car. I came from a lower mileage, newer Saturn Ion, and once I got the Scion, I never looked back.

    • @hduncan2587
      @hduncan2587  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since this video I've actually been looking into (even installing) Scion pieces. there's an xA shift knob and boot, xA Eibach Sportline springs, and a 4-2-1 header. Eventually I'm getting xA seats in front, after seeing one for sale with them.
      I test-drove an xA manual, and that loaded torsion-beam suspension (built in sway bar the Echo never had) and the 15" wheels really makes it feel better in offramps even stock. The muffler being closer to the driver (shorter rear end, open cargo hold) makes the exhaust note more noticeable for you guys, and the Scion intake resonators/snorkels have a wider (louder) bell-mouth from the factory.

      Definitely a lightning in a bottle moment. I'm amazed that a video I made after being up 24 hours (that really was the case... I had the urge to shoot something and make something, so I couldn't sleep) somehow has garnered over 96,000 views.
      In TH-cam terms, especially over 10 years, that's small beans. But for my videos? It's by far the masterpiece. It sucks because... how does one even follow that when this TH-cam isn't even a dedicated thing? I've been dying to make anything even close, especially lately... and the way I've been feeling both pent up and inspired, I hope I can try and rehash this same sentiment just as hard, if not more. Unlike then, I've driven thousands of different vehicles, a number of them much more... we'll say celebrated. But to this day, I still hold this thing as a measuring stick, or perhaps a pallet cleanser (as I've heard it described by some journalists). Hopefully I can throw something together, but not so much as a replacement, but an update to how far Pheobe and I have come since then.

      @@hduncan2587 hey man, it’s art, and you poured your heart and soul into this video. I was watching some of your shots and I was like oh wow that’s some pretty nice work considering this is from like 3 or 4 years ago, and then I checked the date. It’s weird hearing some of these same “slow car fast” terms being used so far back when I still hear them almost daily today. Maybe that’s why I thought it was more recent the first time I saw it. I assumed the camera’s quality was just an artistic choice for a vintage look rather than actually just being an old video. It is very RCR-esque, and I really enjoyed going through this journey with you and your car. I’ve had cars I’ve loved and lost too early, and people just don’t get it the way I do. I’m just glad there are people who I can share experiences with.

    I love this car so much. I have a red 00 four door that my father passed down to me. I have enjoyed this car not just because it is my first car but because its such a fun car to drive. Of course I've done a little work on it. Installing a sub, new speakers,radio etc.new paint job after the clear coat started peeling, tint, new tires/hubcaps, and looking to install some HID's in it. I know there's not much you can do to make this car what most would call "cool" but I think my little Echo looks great. It must run in the family though because my dad still loves to drive it anytime I'm in town. Even though working on them can be a pain (bless my boyfriends heart for putting in a new air system and a new alternator just in the past 4 months) but I think its totally worth it. I dread the day something happens to it.

      The best car. If all cars. We're built to this standard. Americans by age 40 would be , wealthy. Auto mechanics would be out of business. And all of us would retire at 50. Cuase this car could easily drive through the next 50 years. I estimate very loosely. That this car here saves you , 1.oo dollar for every mile driven. Between tires repairs gasoline insurance cuase it smaller repairs. 1 dollar x 500'000 miles = 500,000 dollars. Resulting ??...in your basically retired after 20 years of service. This car can literally shave easily, very easily..., 8 to 15 years off your work life if you take care of it. Meaning you buy it , save your money, and you are retired 15 years after you buy it. Pretty much.

    • @raybon7939
      @raybon7939 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      15 years of driving my estimate is this : gas saved 30,000 dollars, repairs saved 70,000. Maintenance 20,000. Tires belts , electric etc. Then??lastly insurance saved, cuase of its size, prob easily??...And co conservatively.....15,000. 100,000 at 5""percent yearly. Your retired. That's how much this car, can erase off your working years. If???...you play??...your cards right. This car??...can??...be the ticket to you retireing at age 55. And??.....if you drive it only??...20 miles a day....like me?...maybe sooner..??....

    I loves me some Echo! I have the 4-door 5-speed from 2002, complete with a little spoiler! The 5-speed is the fun one. The car is quite light, the handling is not great, but it's predictable, and the thing just revs. There's no tach, so you have to go to the manual to realize that you can go up to 30 in 1st, 60 in 2nd, and 90 in 3rd gear! That third gear is the magic. I live and commute in California and that third gear is what gets you on the freeway fast, you leave it there while you use engine braking and acceleration to find a good spot - the thing goes to 90 in 3rd!

    Dear Harvey,
    We are currently making the necessary new parts purchase decisions in order to renew our echo (265,000 Miles).
    The white letter tires were out of the question until I saw this vid.
    Now 60% in favor. Up 10% from earlier.

      @hduncan2587  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      White letters probably can't be purchased in the correct Echo sizes. Most of the time they are much larger sidewalls, or very high-end, low-profile performance tires for cars like Porsches and Corvettes. I did mine by hand.

    Hello Harvey, like always thank you for your commitment. I'm planning on changing the rear axle. From the xa, just like you said it on one of your videos. My question is as follows. I use 205/50/15 size tires. Does it fit? Or do I need to modify the fenders opening them out? By how much, if needed? I also got the poly bushings for the rear and a whiteline sway bar. Thank you ahead of time for your input.

    • @hduncan2587
      @hduncan2587  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should fit. The biggest tires the Echo tends to take is a 225 from what I remember, and the xA beam still doesn't push out the track all that much if at all. The 205/50 is a bit of a tall sidewall for the gearing, though.
      What year are you working with out of curiosity? The '01+ seemed to put slight changes in brakes and suspension that I'm putting on my early 2000 at some point.

    We bought our echo new and put 100k miles on it in the first year. We took it up jeep trails that bottomed out the F350 almost every day for a couple of years. When the echo bottoms out or gets stuck in something it's light enough to get out and push it free when the F350 gets stuck you need the bulldozer. It got up to 60mpg even tho it never said it could do that. After many years that went down to the 30 it was suppose to get. 300ft thru fording a 2ft deep river didnt stall out or float away. Welded a tow bar on the frame and got it a trailer from harbor freight. It has taken more weight more places than any of our ford rangers. Even up the jeep trails. Scraping the frame on every bump but it can possibly tow 2 maybe 3 tons when fully loaded. Got her up to 120mph but never faster because that seemed unsafe. It's been to almost every state and and should have something like 300k miles on it if only the odometer still worked. A front end collision it suffered some body damage but we still drove it for 6 more years. It drove thru a fire 2 years ago which melted some things and replacing them plus the wheels has just been too much money so it has sat in the backyard retired after 15 years of driving. It's definitely been the best car ever tho. It would be lovely to see it drive again and it could because its not that far gone but its just not worth the cost right now.

    Two door, sedan, standard trans with wheel 1cm wider and 1cm lower and a fairly decent stereo make my 2003 a pretty great car. It's sitting at about 297 000 kms right now and it has some grumbling bearing noise as of late that I hope upon accurate diagnosis doesn't warrant a death sentence. I drive it like a sports car and often load it up like a truck with all kinds of stuff, large rocks, firewood, furniture and camping gear. It has served me very well back and forth to work and longer commutes bringing my boy home on the weekend from his mothers'.
    When I first saw one years ago I laughed but now, the two door at least in my opinion looks like a modern car that may have been just bit ahead of it's time stylistically when it first came out. I can't justify owning any other car right now considering gas prices, boring automatic transmissions and high prices for new cars that serve dealers better than they serve owners. I just hope I can sort out this latest issue successfully. You have a great car there.

    I bought a 2001 Echo new and still have it. It has about 190,000 miles on the engine and body, and who knows how much on the junkyard replacement alternator. My middle son drove it quite a while and sold it back to get a pickup. That had an accident so we picked up a 2000 Echo with questionable lineage - 280,000 miles on the odometer and "just 50,000 miles" on the replacement engine (I think he meant he swapped out the engine for a junkyard find at 230,000 miles.)
    Both of these cars are totally trashed. But with new suspension parts they handle great. The 2001 still has a lot of power. The 2000 doesn't and burns a quart of oil every three tanks of gas. But they get from point A to point B, and are easy to fix.

    I have a Greddy Bolt-On kit pushing about 10psi. Stock the car made approx 91whp, with 4psi boost which is how the kit comes it made 113whp, 10psi with 450cc injectors and an upgraded fuel pump and now the car makes 170whp and 170tq. I want more though! I think the rods on the Fit are also weak, I will have to do some major upgrading if I want more power out of the 1.5 engine.
    I don't care if the car goes slower, I had 225/45/15 Hankook R-S3s on 15x9s before with 91whp. The grip was amazing!

    Awesome man! I made my Echo weight about 2,000 pounds (5 speed coupe)by taking out the spare tire and tools for the tire change. I'm going to buy some Miata wheels for a weight saving of about 24 lb. What did u use to take of the black cover on the door? I used a pressure washer at a car wash but it left the sticky residue.

      Looks even better with the yellow foggies, lowered two inches, and a red tape-stripe on the lower part of the grille (was trying it out-- need to paint it since the tape gives way to heat). Red just pops with the green since they're complimentary colors.

In a buisness book or, buisness course class, or money magazine, this car should be mandatory reading top to bottom. If all cars were built to this standard, 9 out of 10 Americans. Would a have a quarter million dollars in the bank. Even with bouts.....of unemployment. And auto mechanics would be closed. Lloll..

    I personally got an echo as my FIRST car and I LOVE the thing due to it’s funny look (looks like an egg with wheels) but I thought that it would be an excellent sleeper car cause why the hell not. I’m thinking on installing 13inch rims although the tires are 15inches and lower the suspension and maybe add lights under it put a GT spoiler, neon light, new headlights/break lights, a loud muffler, tint the rear windows a bit, repaint it, maybe add NOS for expariment🤔, tune it a bit, and definitely replace the speedometer/ hub of the car so it’s no so ugly and ya I love the thing😂😂

    How well do the Fits take boost? Echo's can take light boost, but too much and the con-rods are the first to go. There are upgrades, of course.
    The set-up I'd go for once there's money would be Eibach Pro-Kit progressive springs, a rear sway bar (Echo's don't have a loaded rear beam), and a 4-2-1 header with an intake. No muffler, since it's already an alright size and it will keep the drone down. 205mm tires are the max before it starts slowing a stock Echo per Vimulator.

  • @hduncan2587
    @hduncan2587  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That seems about right for a Fit. Researching where most Echo/Scion tuners sit, the 1NZ takes maybe 8psi, though some run 10psi with some risk. It's higher than the 5psi I recalled, but boost never got to me. A 5.0L V8 in our Ranger would be welcome, though.

    I haven't gone through the lengths of weight savings. I value having things if a tire goes flat and a back seat (those add up to around 25lbs). The car is already somewhat loud especially with the Uniroyals, and since I still go long distances, I need to have as much civility as I can spare. That's one of the major reasons I'd never consider anything past the manifold for the exhaust. I have definitely looked at alloys for summer tires, though, but there's a soft spot for steelies/rings.

    Been so long since those were installed, couldn't say. The lamps are maybe $20-$30 at a parts store, but I've since had to replace them. The replacement also were around that price. If you look up Pheobe the Echo on Facebook, I can see about sending you a few extra pics of the install of the new ones, but it wasn't a step-by-step documentation.

    Hi, I just have a question about the Echo's audio system. I have a audio transfer cable that can plug into an ipod on one end and then plug it into a car on the other. Except, the car cable is like a 3.5mm jack too.. Is there any other plug ins for the car other than the lighter insert thing? Thanks.

    • @hduncan2587
      @hduncan2587  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I think on the back of the stereo there's a plug for auxiliary pieces, but audio has never been my interest in cars. It's a good question, though, as I'd actually had this on my mind for a few years, but never enough to research it. I'll ask on the FB page and see if anyone might have a suggestion, since it's sorta like a forum for us.

    Have you already cleared the B-pillar decals? The being red, i bet the edges stand out-- I hate that on the lighter colors. Did you have a folding back seat? Echoes without it had a V-brace: nice for rigidity.

    It's not running at the moment, actually. The starter works, but isn't grabbing the fly wheel. Took it in for testing, and the starter is fine. They said tighten the bolts more. Nope. I put so much on those things the engine was moving. So yeah, IDK.

    I'm not one for grip, but it's a preference thing. I've got a blog called Manually Shifted Soul where I wrote one (with examples) called "Getting a Grip on Handling." It's my reasoning rather than experience, but yeah, more grip is nice. Even the 10mm made a nice difference but there's wanting for more. My Echo now sits on Miata wheels since this video. They can be seen in newer vids, the blog, or the Pheobe the Echo Facebook page (that way my FB isn't bombarding people with an Echo).

    I'd like to. Eibach ProKit progressives are on my "want" list, but there are other more important things to get done once I get the money. New wheel bearings up front, for one. More importantly, the cam gears/chain are overdue for their 120k mile replacement. But when I can get those and the shocks done, she should sit 1.2" (I'll instead guess 1" just in case) lower front a rear.

      I think I replied already to your original private message, but Ford 14" beauty rings from 1980's models will fit. Most any 14" beauty ring should fit, I just prefer the squared edge as opposed to the round. Just look up the 14" Ford Ranger beauty rings and you'll find them, or look on Craigslist for 1980's and early 1990's two-wheel drive Rangers, Aerostars, and even the Mustang. They all shared the same 14" beauty rings I had on my wheels. If you can find a part-out vehicle on Craigslist of those cars, you will eventually find those rings.

    Well, John Lovingood (for some reason it won't let me reply directly), it depends partly on the car itself. Darker colors like mine have a lighter body cladding while the lighter colors have a darker cladding-- why they did that I don't know, since it seems backward and cost ineffective to have more than one shade of plastic for the same job. Cosmetics are also a personal thing.

    Oh you have no idea! They are out there. Echoes have a strong Canadian and Puerto Rican following, and even here in the U.S. there are people who track them. There are turbos, superchargers, and headers out there for them as long as you upgrade the con-rods for forced induction (and other stuff, but the rods will go first). Since the Scion xB and xA use the same powertrain, those tuner parts usually work on our cars, too.

    If I ever do anything exhaust, it'll be the Weapon R 4-2-1 header. The OE exhaust is smooth and wide enough where it can run the added flow. The OE muffler actually has a built in valve that keeps backpressure to keep low-end torque, but opens up for higher-end breathing. Win win, and a cool feature most people don't know about. The old 1.5L Scions had that muffler too.

      Opening morning shots were outside the town I grew up: Oakdale CA, on the way to Yosemite CA. This is on a curve in the more rural part of Claribel Road out of Modesto, but may someday be bulldozed for a bypass around my "sleepy" town, if you can call a town of 25,000 with two highways (one leading to Yosemite) runing through. A lot of the peaks you're seeing in the distance are those found around Sonora Pass on 108.
      Other shots are misc locations are in the foothills on Highway 49 or on Telegraph Road near the ghost town Telegraph City (off Highway 4 to the north) and J-something-or-other. Too many roads I like to take, honestly.
      I do miss such easy access to those roads, now that I'm in a more centered, urban environment. Views of the Sierra aren't as nice here in Sacramento, either.
      Also, she's since been lowered on Eibachs and had new fog lights put on. Sadly the original engine also went recently. Still doesn't change the character the car has, and means I have a stronger heart in the car to build off of.
