It's interesting how Jordan Peterson recommends that we reject our ideologies and shake up our mental framework of how the world works and yet a lot of the people who post parts of his lectures on TH-cam often use him to justify their own worldview. Not once in this video does he mention "alpha males" nor does he make a parallel between being at the top of a particular dominance hierarchy and being an alpha male. While intuitively they seem like the same thing, human social hierarchies don't have alpha males. I guess what I'm saying is that Essential Truth is using Peterson to project and justify their worldview despite the fact that the good doctor isn't really making a case for that. Or its a clickbait for Red Pillers or something, it's hard to tell.
True, but I guess the main point is that the title is appealing to people with a pretty particular outlook. So either Essential Truth shares those ideas (which I reckon come with the Red Pill/nice guy ideology which goes against what Peterson is about) or they're appealing to those kinds of people because they know that'll get them those sweet, sweet views. Either way you're right its a clickbait title but I'm curious as to whether this channel believes in what they advocate.
I heard that there is no alpha/beta hierarchy in humans and wanted to get Peterson's piece on this. Saying "title is appealing to people with a pretty particular outlook" is wrong, you're here for another reason, aren't you? It's appealing to anyone having an opinion regarding the outlook or those seeking to form an opinion. It is good to have your beliefs challenged, that's when I saw the greatest growth of my character.
I mean sure I came here because I wanted to see what he had to say as well. But the issue is that this video doesn't challenge or support beliefs regarding the existence of alpha males in human hierarchies because the video has nothing to do with the idea of alpha males. So sure its supposed to appeal to anyone who has any opinion on the idea of alpha/beta males, but the lecture has got nothing to do with that. It just doesn't challenge those opinions. So I think the guess that uses the least assumptions is that Essential Truth interprets this excerpt as proof for alpha males and has posted it with that title and description as proof to others. I don't really buy the idea that its any more nuanced than that. And I mean it hasn't failed to bring in the alpha male proponents, there's a fair few in the rest of the comments. Just checked the channel history and there are a bunch of recent videos with titles referring to alpha and beta males, why women reject men, the pay gap, etc. I don't think it takes an internet detective to figure out what kind of opinions this person has. Plus they've monetized their videos, which is a pretty shitty thing to do considering they didn't actually make the content.
Might be a proponent of the said ideas but also might be just a guy making money off the group that has this idea as a core value (MGTOW). Come to think of it, the channel name is something a MGTOW would label themselves (and they love to talk about alpha/beta hierarchy where, of course, alphas are only MGTOW who have learned "the truth"), so you might be correct. They are very vocal about how "enlightened" they are. The videos they post even at some point almost convinced me to be like them until I realized they are just another group seeking to impose own beliefs while claiming these to be factual. But the only fact is that most of them were just severely hurt emotionally (like I was when I nearly aligned myself with the movement) and they seek justification of their hate (which they think is indifference) towards women. Fortunately, I realized I'm an adult and can't blame others for things that happen to me and ultimately are the result of my choices.

Which is a projected problem from people age 50+ as well. I have job interviews where they cannot let go of my few years as a freelancer and critic. After doing some research and the company I tend to do some research on their field and line of work as well so I have some idea where I am going to work. I officially worked as a 'freelancer', but really it was just one company and I was offered a contract during my 3rd year internship. Which I said no to - because I wanted to finish school first - and stayed on-board as a freelancer. Being a critic was tricky at that age (early twenties) because I wasn't as strong at creating solutions for said issues. So every time I commented on something, I didn't really have a solution either, not concrete. Flash forward eight years later (now) and I trained myself to be a critic and creator at the same time. So each time I discuss an issue, I have one or two solutions at hand. Mostly conceptual idea's, but people mostly understand it's just a starting point. So 'millennial's' often have the required knowledge, but they don't know how to apply it yet. They often have new information and angles to approach said problems if given the chance. So what people do is keep them small, instead of giving them a chance to relearn what they know from experienced eyes. And that's not their job, but those who have the experience. And thats a major problem as well, the incompetence and lack of will to properly train juniors in their position. Let them earn their colors, don't hold them back because you feel like a sourpuss because you were so much better at that working stage. Everyone who just finished the highest class in any level of school felt like they were the boss. And each time you go to a new school, there are the seniors who put them back in their place from the day they arrive. This attitude is much worse in the working life, and millenials will do the same because they've been treated as such for quite a few years as well now. Thing is, even though I'm proud of my working attitude right now, new people who don't know me still call me pretentious or arrogant at times. Time often shows them differently. It still hurts each time, because I worked my ass off to get to this point.

Before Peterson, the whole alpha beta obsession and redpill crap I had my own alpha/ beta personality model. I started observing group dynamics in social, academic and sport settings. circa 2007-2012. This model revolves around accepted leadership. The variants are based on aggression, conscientiousness, competitiveness and competence. In my model you have alpha plus and alpha minus, beta plus and beta minus and so on(delta, gamma). My observation was that a beta plus could in situations dominate and lead an alpha minus. My definition of alphas are superior in physical ability and intelligence and must be aggressive/competitive. Your type A personality combined with all the advantages. Higher performers. Very instinctive or primal. No verbal filters and very reactive as well as proactive. Apex people. An alpha minus lacks one or a few of the above with respect to the group objective. Usually intelligence or competence. Roles can switch depending on group objective( alpha to beta) But minus or plus is always permanent. So if the objective switches and you are not the alpha in that particular activity you are now beta but your plus or minus ranking remains. ( alpha minus cannot become a beta plus they will be beta minus) that is based on aggression and competitiveness. My theory was that a beta plus may lack some physical advantages but they are highly aggressive and competitive. Yet they cannot match an alpha plus and do not wish to because they want the best to lead. However in the presence of an alpha minus they will not submit or tolerate incompetence because the alpha minus is unqualified to lead. The beta will take the lead then delegate the alpha minus to a task that puts their ability to the best use. As long as the beta continues to perform and yield results the group willfully accepts this. I noticed this in school social circles, my sports teams and later in university group projects. Sometimes the smartest person in the room was not the best leader. In sports the most athletic did not always command the respect of the team. This rings truer to me than a man being considered an alpha just because of his size and aggression. He could be a total buffoon. Now deltas will never challenge any alpha. Nor gammas to betas. The ability difference is too great. Nor would they think to. I could go on and on with real life observations and example but I hope you get the point. People want to be lead by the person with the greatest chance of success and that is not always the person with the greatest raw ability.
Hey interesting. I read all of that lol. So can I interpret your comment and sum it up by saying "most people would like to be leaded by a person that looks big and strong, as well as intelligently competent"?
JP explaining that we don't feel comfortable with a space until we've explored it suddenly makes me understand why people give guests tours of their homes. That has always been weird to me.
It's not about being "alpha". "Alpha" is about power, aka oozing testosterone, and it's a primitive expression of masculinity in males. JBP talks about a higher order of dominance: dominance through competence and responsibility, authority through knowledge and character. (Latest update: Jordan Peterson did stop saying "dominance hierarchies". It's not the same thing as "competence hierarchies" because "dominance" hierarchies are about being authoritarian.)
Whoever ibn4 is irrelevant. "Alpha males & everyone below them" is a title as dumb as considering Bill Gates an alpha, although he's at a very top of lots of hierarchies of dominance. Lifting does not make one an alpha at all. Maybe healthier... maybe.
Depends on the dominance hierarchy.. if you don't think strength puts you at the top of dominance hierarchies, you are consciously avoiding those hierarchies because you are currently incompetence in them.
Hermetic Parkour I think you're mixing your definitions of strength. But being alpha means having physical strength. "Alpha male" is a notion used to describe in animal kingdom the males that dominate in relation to the hierarchy of mating. We took that notion and applied to human hierarchies of dominance but it was the wrong thing to do because it does not correctly describe proper human authority. So while one avoids hierarchies based on physical strength one can select battles for dominance only in those hierarchies that pertain to one's other strengths, not necessarily mating. That's why we marry. My thesis here is that humans instinctively have been trying to render hierarchies of mating irrelevant. They are too low on the evolution of our species.
"Betas" do all the dreaming, idealizing, thinking, and *working* to make *anything* in life worthwhile. "Alphas" distract all the patheitic, purely image-driven losers to keep them from interfering with people trying to make LIFE happen.
@Radeonr9280x A That's because ownership status allows/forces them to be alpha. If the employees tried to be alpha, the owners would either fire them or use their position make their lives miserable until they become subordinate.
Guy With Knife "Gestate" lol hahaha what? "Gestate: carry a fetus in the womb from conception to birth." "Gesticulate to make or use gestures, especially dramatic ones, instead of speaking or to emphasize one's words." Lmao I don't blame you, I had to look up what these words meant. They're both weird. Gesticulate sounds like testicles. My autocorrect agrees with me
You can only truly be alpha if you are already successful at your dreams. That’s why I call myself a masculine man for right now because I’m not at my dreams and goals yet, but I’m on my grind.
Animal Fun Facts: -Hyenas are very proficient hunters. They frequently hunt more than they scavenge. -Lions frequently scavenge more than hyenas. -Spotted Hyenas live in matriarchal clans, as the females are larger and more aggressive than males. -Male lions evolved manes to protect their necks (mainly from fighting other male lions).
I love how he doesn't even know the character's names. "Sound. Dialogue. Music. Movement. Not important. I can break this shit down just by the pictures."

9:07 "They keep wrestling" Simba is the adventurer and wrestles with the anima. He tries to beat her, he tries to make up for his inadequacy and tries to get even, in the face of her superiority to him. Thats akin to being rejected as a guy and finding this intrinsic motivation to get stronger and improve, there is hardly anything else that motivates a man more than that. "and then there are on the fringe of the kingdom" And in the process of contending with the anima outside of the "walled garden", the holy land that gave him security and safety, the hero encounters death, gore and insanity (the hyenas making cruel jokes about killing them, coming out of the eyes of an elephant corpse and then that one insane hyena...). He passingly notes evidence that the behavior that we call schizophrenia results from conflict between the subconscious and conscious (11:50). This deserves great attention, as it implies that the most severe putative mental disease is not a disease at all.
@@curcumin417 Good correction; Jordon gave no such evidence. He claimed that, in schizophrenics, involuntary control disrupts conscious control of both eye movement and thinking. He did not claim that such conflict _causes_ , or _is_ , schizophrenia. Yet it is implied; and if it is the case that what psychiatrists call schizophrenia is a conscious vs involuntary mental conflict, then it is not a literal/medical disease -and that is indeed worthy of our attention.
He should've been more specific, like "there's hyenas in there, they eat lion cubs, they'll definitely eat you. Stay tfo. And if I catch your punkass sneaking around there, there shall be consequences. Got it? Good. Nah nigga, look me in the eyes and tell me you understand. Good." I love the word, 'Beta', because whenever it is used, it's always used to describe how someone else is beta and never the person saying it. 'Me?! Beta?!?! Haha that's funny! It is you who is the beta!'
Beta simply means by urban definition ( societal description of the word ) as being out of tune with the socialization, because you are hogging your ‘chi’ like you are in an unknown or unsafe environment. Women cannot be attracted to this. Men cannot give their bodies a chemical reaction in order to think about procreating. Celibacy is like going cold turkey and once you do it the ‘drive’ for sex isn’t there. Only the ego. And yes it is a handy observational tool but when it comes to socializing there are little to observe and more so to act.

Technically no. Sigma males tend to be Alpha's who have no need for the structure hence the Lone Wolf attitude. Scar wanted to be king, he is an Alpha who overthrew another Alpha. If he truly was a Sigma, he would be one his own doing whatever while still getting his needs IE food and females.
The smooth eye movement he talks about is called "Smooth-Pursuit Eye Tracking," and has to be trained (for example by high end gamers or spear-fishers, etc). The choppy eye motion that we usually use is called "Saccadic Eye Movements," and is great for reaction to random stimuli, but bad for aiming on a target you a tracking.
I have seen it a couple of time in these videos, that the title not at all matches the content "Alpha males&beta males"?? What? I think this says a lot more about the uploader than about the really sophisticated speech of Jordan Peterson.
So the archetype of simba is Justin treadou unearned privilege but does that mean he will figure it out and set his kingdom right or does it require a rejection and “prodigal son” archetype? And if so how much suffering is going to be a consequence?
Alpha & Beta aren't phrases Peterson bandy's about because it's usually used for one particular breed of 'top of your hierarchy', it's subjective and situational
1:20 The king lion = Standing up straight and tall means you're high in serotonin. Serotonin governs postural flexion, so if you're dominant and at the top of hierarchies you tend to expand so that you look bigger than you could if you shrunk down. If you're a low dominance person, you shrink down so that you look small and weak, and that you don't pose a threat to anybody. (why women take antidepressants in the workplace, to artificially release serotonin to give them "the edge") 2:20 Facial expression = capable of kindness but also harsh and judgmental (means he's integrated his aggression, because the world is harsh like that). The people who are too agreeable look childlike and innocent, while the hyper-aggressive person will look mean and cruel. 7:35 Women makes men self conscious because of their sexual selectivity, and it makes men self conscious like no else. Sadly, I think, we're generally first judged by the appearance; and if we pass the test, we're allowed to show our character. This is especially weird in modern age because, as an example, we are seeing more and more successful people not display their success while people who haven't achieved success but strive for it will display the illusion of success. So the appearance has less and less indication of what kind of person you are yet we are still attached to that same habit of judging people by their looks.

My life frickin' has been terrible from childhood onward, and now things are finally making sense. I don’t care about “click-bait” as an excuse. One could argue that he is speaking of Alphas, but only in the real sense as in a hierarchy. There can only be one alpha occupying a space at any given time.
Like any property/characteristic, wouldn't the gap between being alpha and beta be a finely differentiated continuum? I mean there's not just one solitary hot girl in the room and the rest are just ugly.
True. My annoyance at the whole Alpha-Beta thing ("That's exactly what a Beta would say"- Some meathead or loser pretending to not be a loser) is that it is a spectrum and nobody can really define what they mean by Alpha or Beta and nobody is in agreement whatsoever. Some definitions of Alpha that are focused on aggression, dominance, risk taking, and so on are actually not that successful. Men who are extremely aggressive, constantly bullying or dominating people weaker than them, and taking risks aren't some Top-of-the-Food-Chain guys, but they rather end up in prison in advanced societies or end up getting killed in less advanced societies. Even if you look at gangs, organized crime families, drug cartels, and other anti-social groups, the leaders are rarely the most vicious members (although they are usually significantly more ruthless than the average member). Other definitions of Alpha include stuff like having a lot of sexual partners and/or children. Well, than Justin Bieber is far more Alpha than probably any guy you know and so was Prince and so is Mick Jagger or almost any male musician. And if you want to go with someone with a lot of children, some Mormon nerd with eight kids is more Alpha than you. Wealth? Sure, I can definitely believe that, but then Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are Alpha as fuck. And the other thing is that Beta in animal hierarchies just means lower than the top. By definition, a very small minority of men are Alpha males (regardless of whatever criteria you wish to use). Beta Males are actually potential Alpha Males waiting for their shot. There are also other categories and rankings like Gamma, Omega, Sigma, and so on depending on the species and situation. I find it hard to believe that all (or even a sizeable minority) of self-proclaimed Alpha Males are within the Top 0.5-5% of men in toughness, wealth, or sexual partners.
let's say that alpha is the one that have ''the girls'' and that doesn't have much stress in his life. Then it's as simple as that, who has more power? This is the alpha term we all use so much for no reason. Having the power makes you free, with no stress, and then females come and choose you and if you like them you have sex if not you go to the other one. So who is the alpha? Of course it depends the situation but most of the time the alpha is the one that has money. The iron willed, psychological tough (if not a psychopath in the first place), scar in the face guy ,rish taking, strategy genius, working all day guy will be nothing comparing to the super rich nerd that found a way to make money. That's true, at least I believe it's true. Even if the body and the traits are desirable (i don't know if they are or not), there is nothing like the resources. I guess resources are top in subconscious female human mind that sees the provider. I MAYBE BE WRONG so.... . One thing I know. To succeed you must be a sociopath, a psychopath, or lucky. And of the 3 I am nothing.
@@libertatemadvocatus1797 I can't stop laughing at the idea that Yuckerberg or Bieber is an Alpha! But what you're saying does make sense. Really, labels like alpha or beta are poorly defined in our culture, especially because beta is in general nothing but an insult. I think it's probably inaccurate to define alpha males as "the top 0.5-5% of men in X categories" because alphas of other species in the wild are not alphas simply because they're in a minority of competence or mates, but usually because they're the leader of a family group.
So many people misunderstand Hyenas and because of movies like The Lion King they tend to be used as poor examples. The Spotted hyena is an incredibly intelligent and fascinating pack animals plus they're really cute (not Lion King's hideous animated caricature). Bro Peterson literally admitted to being a very feminine male in another video and in same video questioned these type of traits in a broad subjective way like it mattered to what the interviewer was saying. These types of inconsistencies and tangents are rampant in his videos especially when talking to women with strong alternative points of view. So using his beta male ideas and traits why would you label him an alpha or people who don't like him beta?

"Confusing privilege with competence" pretty well sums up your average highly educated millennial arguing their feelings against objective reality.
Explain to me then what competence Donald Trump had that warranted his dad giving him a million dollars.

This is the most in-depth movie review of The Lion King, EVER!
That's an interesting theory
Nice hypothetical model.
Hey interesting. I read all of that lol. So can I interpret your comment and sum it up by saying "most people would like to be leaded by a person that looks big and strong, as well as intelligently competent"?
Where do sigma and omegas fit into this model? I’m a sigma, so I’m curious as to where they fit in your model.

It's not the same thing as "competence hierarchies" because "dominance" hierarchies are about being authoritarian.)
dan pasare nah bro, that omega dude with the edgy profile name was "inb4" your comment. I bet he doesn't even lift...other than cigarettes and booze;)
Whoever ibn4 is irrelevant. "Alpha males & everyone below them" is a title as dumb as considering Bill Gates an alpha, although he's at a very top of lots of hierarchies of dominance. Lifting does not make one an alpha at all. Maybe healthier... maybe.
I know, man. I agree with you.
Depends on the dominance hierarchy.. if you don't think strength puts you at the top of dominance hierarchies, you are consciously avoiding those hierarchies because you are currently incompetence in them.
Hermetic Parkour
I think you're mixing your definitions of strength.
You need a balance, you need alphas and betas for a society to function. They have their uses.
Baghuul thank you for that wisdom
"Betas" do all the dreaming, idealizing, thinking, and *working* to make *anything* in life worthwhile.
"Alphas" distract all the patheitic, purely image-driven losers to keep them from interfering with people trying to make LIFE happen.
@Radeonr9280x A there's no way he actually believes that 😂🤣😂🤣 what a joke

You can only truly be alpha if you are already successful at your dreams. That’s why I call myself a masculine man for right now because I’m not at my dreams and goals yet, but I’m on my grind.
Animal Fun Facts:
-Hyenas are very proficient hunters.

9:07 "They keep wrestling"
Simba is the adventurer and wrestles with the anima. He tries to beat her, he tries to make up for his inadequacy and tries to get even, in the face of her superiority to him. Thats akin to being rejected as a guy and finding this intrinsic motivation to get stronger and improve, there is hardly anything else that motivates a man more than that.
"and then there are on the fringe of the kingdom"
And in the process of contending with the anima outside of the "walled garden", the holy land that gave him security and safety, the hero encounters death, gore and insanity (the hyenas making cruel jokes about killing them, coming out of the eyes of an elephant corpse and then that one insane hyena...).

He passingly notes evidence that the behavior that we call schizophrenia results from conflict between the subconscious and conscious (11:50).
This deserves great attention, as it implies that the most severe putative mental disease is not a disease at all.
Nice claim, but where's the evidence
@@curcumin417 Good correction; Jordon gave no such evidence. He claimed that, in schizophrenics, involuntary control disrupts conscious control of both eye movement and thinking.
He did not claim that such conflict _causes_ , or _is_ , schizophrenia. Yet it is implied; and if it is the case that what psychiatrists call schizophrenia is a conscious vs involuntary mental conflict, then it is not a literal/medical disease -and that is indeed worthy of our attention.
Simba actually asks Musofa first. He says something like “what about that place there?” Which is dark THEN the king tells him he must never go there.

Then Simba would cringe every time he even thought about it.
In defence of hyenas: when i finally saw one up close, it was playing a game with 2 jackals, and it was fun to watch and appeared fun for all involved. Dog-like pleasure. They do also hunt, and let's not forget lions also scavenge. Ugly, sure, but a tough, sociable, gutsy animal.

Serotonin governs postural flexion, so if you're dominant and at the top of hierarchies you tend to expand so that you look bigger than you could if you shrunk down. If you're a low dominance person, you shrink down so that you look small and weak, and that you don't pose a threat to anybody. brnghkmrs not saying you don't do it already. But similarly kind-looking people can't act too nice or they're thought to be just doormats, they need to show that they have some toughness in them to contrast with the look. We actually may have things easier :)

Why is Kermit telling me how to be alpha
Undercover Pig why are you watching a video where Kermit tells you how to be alpha?
j d he’s making a joke you degenerate
Peterson has never been an "alpha" in his life. Voice sounds low testosterone.
I thought I was the only one he heard Kermit in his voice
@@kalashnikov5544 Hmm. Have you ever heard Mike Tyson speaking ?
So many people misunderstand Hyenas and because of movies like The Lion King they tend to be used as poor examples. The Spotted hyena is an incredibly intelligent and fascinating pack animals plus they're really cute (not Lion King's hideous animated caricature). I recommend anyone to check out Kevin Richardsons page "The Lion Whisperer" who shows how amazing these animals really are.
These videos are so poorly titled lol. How about: "What the lion king can teach us about society".
Sorry for anyone who's here because of the title. Still a good talk. Definitely worth a listen.
When he said snail king, I couldn't help but imagine a snail taking an entire day just to come to the tip of that rock that Mufasa stood on XD
There are two type of males; fans of Jordan Peterson and beta males
Bro Peterson literally admitted to being a very feminine male in another video and in same video questioned these type of traits in a broad subjective way like it mattered to what the interviewer was saying. These types of inconsistencies and tangents are rampant in his videos especially when talking to women with strong alternative points of view. So using his beta male ideas and traits why would you label him an alpha or people who don't like him beta?
If only JP and Alan Watts could pick each others brain out.
I really wish Alan was still with us, although his words of wisdom will always be with us.
Jordan has the unique ability to apply psychological theory to reality!
Jordan Peterson is helping me become the man I want to be. I want to thank him one day
He is my prophet. I hope I can meet him one day, too. He made me look at myself and think really hard about what I want in this life.
Bizzare fucking lecture, using the lion king as the basis, it’s basically me after dropping acid, watching a cartoon and rambling to some confused students
Love all of his videos
Personality is the keys guys
