    Women maintain eye contact longer than men because sustained eye contact between men is often seen as a physical challenge. It's one of the reasons that men think women are into them when the woman was just making casual conversation. Men aren't used to it.

      and i think that we find light eyes: blue, green, amber, more attractive because it makes it EVEN easier to see the pupils and figure out exactly where someone is looking. It makes locating the center of the eye even more easy, and makes eye contact more powerful

    • @TheAndreArtus
      @TheAndreArtus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Do you mean flowers? Fruit are a late stage result of already successful pollination.
      The perception of colour is partly a mental construct, so it's going to be difficult to determine how bees perceive the variations in wavelengths. It is known however that bees are sensitive to a range of wavelengths about as wide as ours, but shifted towards blue. That is, they are not so sensitive to red, but are more sensitive to blue and are even sensitive well into ultraviolet.

    I intentionally do not sustain eye contact while conversing with others as I cannot process auditory and visual information very well at the same time. I've found it easier to listen and develop a deeper understanding during conversations with people if I gaze down or away. I find it liberating.

    • @blindsoul7915
      @blindsoul7915 5 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      It is especially logical to cut down on eye contact. It does indeed allow for deeper discussion, focusing your energy on analyzing the substance of what is being said. It has been proven that people engaged in mainstream communication barely pay attention to the actual words. This is just another one of the reasons why people of intellectual abilities are often overlooked.
      The fact remains - rocket science was never conveyed through eye contact alone.

    The reason that fruit evolved towards a red color to indicate ripeness is that red is the color that stands out most against the predominantly green and yellow-green background of grassland and forests, where angiosperms (flower and fruit-growing plants) evolved. So it's an eye-catching color, signalling that the fruit is ready to be eaten so the plant's seeds will be dispersed.

    He missed that ripe fruit is red because it is maximally contrasted (according to color theory) by the green in the environment. Meaning frugivores would be more likely to spot the fruit, thus spread the seeds and thus drive the selection engine further towards red ripened fruit. That evolving in us is also related to why we think of red as cautionary because we instantly take notice, and women and car manufacturers sometimes capitalize on that effect. The root of all that is by my best estimation that blood is red which requires attention and that fact directed the co-evolution of sexual selection in natural (red cheeks) and artificial (makeup) displays and the display of red fruit in plants

    • @xurofthenine
      @xurofthenine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello fellow TH-camr, I hope all is well. First, I want to lay a foundation and say that I AGREE with what the Great Jordan Peterson has said and what you have said. Your comment caught my attention because you mentioned the red/green dynamic. When Peterson mentioned fruit, and again when I read this post, I thought
      'okay, but what about bananas? When bananas are not "of age", they are green, and when they are ripe, they are yellow.'
      Not every fruit is red. Perhaps this is solely based on the eye of the beholder; that whatever is eating the fruit determines the color of the fruit, that is, maybe if given enough time to evolve, bananas would become red when ripe as well?
      So my question is: are there other factors at play, or is this "positive feedback loop" the only sort of "driving force" of evolution? If there are other factors in the mix, what might those be?

    • @mattdoesflyfishing
      @mattdoesflyfishing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I can agree with this except that blood is red due to hemoglobin. There are plenty of vertebrates with red blood that do not have the same ocular triggers as we do to red. My uniformed guess is that the relationship between blood color and that of ripe fruit is likely a coincidence.

    • @topdnbass
      @topdnbass 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattdoesflyfishing yes clearly the color of blood is not dependent on the color of fruit, but the reverse is what I'm arguing. So, given that hemoglobin evolved as an efficient transporter of oxygen, and as a byproduct makes the blood red, animal neurology has special alert systems to the color red. This seems evident to me. Now the assertion is that fruits took advantage of that by evolving to be red when ready to be consumed, thus hijacking the primitive alert system

    • @topdnbass
      @topdnbass 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xurofthenine given that bananas grow in bunches they would be a lot harder to miss than spaced out yellow apples for example. But yes I agree with your assertion that it depends on the eye of the beholder/consumer. If it did not matter to the primary seed dispersing organism, then it would probably not be selected for. There are other colors of banana than yellow though, including yes red, brown, and even blue - look at that. The reasons are probably pretty complex and varied and not only to do with detection by the consumer but also in the benefits conferred by different pigment molecules themselves, which can protect against oxidation, and predation by insects.

      @@pineapplaplatypotato There exists the idea of a perfect monitor, and it is based on the maximum physical capabilities of the human eye. 60 FPS has long been the aspired to frame rate for most gamers. And its no coincidence that that 60 hertz is the frequency of most AC electrical circuits (those used in your home, work etc) as the alternating of the current coincides with the maximum frame rate. The power supply for a monitor to display a higher frame rate must be altered from the standard 60hz to be achieved. You can render 144 frames on your video card even with a 60 hertz monitor, but the monitor will only display 60fps. Some studies suggest that 144hz approaches the upper limit of the human eyes ability to detect flicker rate, within 3 standard deviations, a statistical vast majority.

      Lower FPS adds lots of milliseconds to the reaction time between seen something in the screen and reacting with the mouse or keyboard. For 144 FPS is only 6.94ms, for "cinematic" 30 FPS is 33.33ms. A regular TV in gaming mode or cheap monitor adds another ~28ms, meanwhile a good gaming monitor adds only ~5ms, and a CRT 0ms.
      The CRT would look like the best option, but they blurry small details negating higher resolution advantages and their refresh rate at high resolutions hardly reaches 80Hz, so in the end you have a total latency quite similar to gaming monitors at 144FPS.

Unfortunately I doubt that they are going to expose people to high levels of adrenaline for an fps experiment considering health risks, though it would be interesting. One of the few times I've heard Peterson make a mistake. To be fair though this is a very old video, there is still lots of misinformation, higher frame rates have only recently become possible, and many of the studies are from the last couple years.

In fact, his extemporaneous lecture style covers so much stuff, moving quickly from one thing to another on the fly, that I'm not even sure what kind of reading you could be expected to do to prepare for the 30 or so issues he covers in each lecture. Our notebooks were turned in for examination for the two midterm exams - I aced both, and the final was solely a written exam. Even though I was late for the final exam by 15 minutes, I got a 4.0 for the course. I didn't even have to take the final, He said that he would simply base my grade on my two midterms alone. Naturally, I agreed right away. I was on my way home 5 minutes later with a smile on my face. I don't often get that kind of respect and it was very gratifying.

    With humans you can even feint another human in combat just by staring at something. If you have a sword in your hand and you fake stare at something to your left, if your opponent believes you, you can then stab him. It works in boxing too with body shots. You stare at their face and think "Im going to hit them in the head... im going to hit them in the head..." but then you hit them in the body even tho you are staring at their head. Or you suddenly look down at their body and then hit them in the head

      we may only see at 60 but the brain can detect more than that. If you stare at a screen on 60 all day you get tired in your eyes and your brain. If you stare at a 70 screen your brain only gets tired. 144hz means neither the brain nor the eyes detect the refreshes and so don't get anywhere near as tired.

      AFAICS the answer is oversampling. 144 frames which are blurred together (downsampled) by our slower perception feels more complete than 60 frames, in which the computer-generated nature of the images becomes more obvious.
      The updatedness probably also varies according to where a particular element falls in your field of vision. The centre is likely the closest to realtime.

    2:28 He's wrong about the 60hz thing. You see faster out of your peripheral vision. Say you have something you can't see is flickering at say 60hz when you look directly at it (I do and I think most do) when you avert your eyes so you only see it out of the corner of your eye you will notice the flicker more or will start to see the flicker. The peripheral vision is low resolution but faster because that's better for detecting motion quickly so you can react to it. For example with a CRT screen running at 60hz when I look at it through my peripheral vision I can actually see the effect of the ray gun moving down the screen over and over.

      People also don't factor in tearing when it comes to stuff like that. It's not just the speed of people's vision that impacts their ability to tell the difference between 30 fps and 60. I fact, I think before we had electronic displays like that, they did experiments with film and decided human vision only detected 12 fps, but due to problems with displaying it, it of course looked smoother at higher frequencies like it does now.

      I was thinking that too before I read your comment. Not only is my peripheral vision more sensitive to flicker, but I can see color on an object with it that I can't see while looking at it directly. Fun fact also, my left eye sees white as bluish, while my right eye sees white as being more orange.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Trevokable
      Your eyes, optical nerves and brain simply cannot process beyond 60hz.
      Your peripheral vision is part of the brains hierarchical processing structure so while the vision system cannot process beyond 60hz constructive aspects of brain development create abstract models that allow reactions to take place.
      So in other words your brain can calculate danger with the small amount of information as it recognises various patterns. Your brain can do this in other ways as well such are recognising a person without actually seeing the whole face.
      Our brains are a series of models built from our experiences combined with natural architecture.

    The "Yellow Apple" was a symbol used both in Greek myth and Christian belief-- and could oddly refer to early Tomatoes, which were first cultivated as a small, yellow species. Either way, I always thought the metaphor of the apple or tomato seemed to indicate that once you find something more exciting in life (the sharp, pleasurable experience of a ripe fruit bursting in your mouth) then you'll need to find new excitements. Then you're cast into a hellish existence of working to satisfy your basic desires to the point that you can't even prevent your two sons from killing each other.

    I've heard of a study that in video games, where red vs blue is common, there is a definite correlation between the team color and the success rate. In games where the best strategy is to rush in and conquer, then red usually wins. And if the best strategy is to think about how to organize and what objectives to pursue, and it becomes important to not just rush in, then blue usually wins. Also blue is associated with respect for the Lord's law in the Bible.

    Red catches the eye faster than others. It can be mostly shocking, because of blood and association with danger, but that association is done by advertisement and red traffic lights and danger signs. But otherwise, it's just that our minds are attracted by it easily. It's used in eye movement in compositions in art. It's warm, like fire and in the warm color family, yellows, oranges, pinks (kind of)... so also relates to emotional, sexual attraction. You put some colors on paper and RED catches you first mostly, but it can be designed to catch even last, if you compose and place your colors differently

The interesting part, the reason I'm mentioning this at all, is that he instantly squinted back, recognizing that I had recognized him (😁).
    All I could think to say when in a state of such surprise was, "I watch you all the time." He was just so gracious. But yeah, he is very tuned-in to eye contact.

    It’s all debatable as new studies and and facts emerge. Like a picture that isn’t quite in focus yet. Jordan offers possible explication for various scenarios that exist. From my point of view, the discussion and dissemination of conversation like these are important and sorely lacking. We evolve when sharing, debating etc... Thanks for propping open minds and having the courage to post, even at the expense of being imperfect in others minds.

    He isn't quite accurate with the 60 Hz comment. People see much more than 60 images per second, but it varies depending on the individual. We can perceive 1 ms long display times for an image and respond to it. The flickering is typically "gone" for most people at 300+ Hz. That said, many people will be able to tell a faster refresh rate display from a slower one even past that.

      True but pixel persistence makes 60Hz cost effective and there is also retinal persistence that makes 60Hz functional.

      That 1ms display being seen is not from the brain being able to handle 1000 frames a second, though. That's from visual burn holdover, nothing more. If a movie is shown to us at 1000 frames a second, I guarantee it will be a giant blur and only fragments get through.

    • @HeldVenom
      @HeldVenom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      davidsirmons
      Not entirly correct. That means that our brain perceives a 1/1000th of a second flicker in a static image. If you had the equipment to display any 1000 frames per second film, you would see a smooth as butter movie. The only difference between that and real life would likely be the resolution of the movie.
      It wouldn't "blur" any more than our current perception of a real object in motion blurs (like a car moving down the street).

    • @FroztiProductions
      @FroztiProductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We can't see the difference for still images if it's 60hz or above. We can't comprehend every frame above 60hz. But we can easily tell the difference between 60hz and 240hz simply because of the motion blur and screen tearing. At 120hz the small number of frames we comprehend each second are less distorted and respond quicker.
