    Tip to fix the volume pot taper is to add a 130k resistor between lugs 1 & 2 on the volume pots. Changes them from an audio taper to an almost reverse audio taper and gives you full range again from 0-10.

    Great video and very informative. 50s wiring doesn't always make it bright it enough. If the pups have the woolyness and lack the chimy highs, then the wiring doesn't take it away. It's worth trying if you like brighter tones but bear in mind that you might also need a set of brighter pickups or just a brighter neck pickup. Pickup height also has to do with brightness and string definition and clarity. Pups set to 2.5-4mm measured with the strings free usually should work for a PAF style pickup but always hear and adjust to your preference.

    I just did this with LP#2 and yes it is very tele like. I still haven't decided if it's too bright though. The high's are piercing. The new pickups are 59' PAF replica, so that might factor into it as well. The guitar before was very wooly in a marshall but wonderful in an old Fender. The neck is so unlike what I'm accostomed to in a humbucker. Your jazz tone/touch is awesome BTW.

    Awesome, Isn’t it? Did that to my SG a couple of years back and it was a game changer. Other thing that is amazing about 50s wiring is the interaction between the volume and tone pots. Did you watch Jeff McErlain’s video “Dialing in your Les Paul”? There’s a good explanation about that interaction. You should also consider replacing the pots with Vintage Inspired Pickups VIPots. They are replicas of the Centralab pots Gibson used back in the day. The taper is awesome and they feel really good. they will make your guitar sound and feel even better... trust me. I still have the stock 57 Classic Pickups in my SG because, after this mod, the guitar sounds spectacular, although I still have curiosity about how a good set of PAF replicas would sound in it. Cheers!I

    THIS IS THE SEQUENCE Regarding The Wiring;
    The MODERN; the wire from the 3 way goes to and therefore Through The Tone Pot 1st. THEN to The Volume.
    The 50's; 3 way Wiring goes to and then Through the Volume Pot 1st.
    You can appreciate that In The Modern; the tone pot 1st alters the signal due to its inherent resistance Before it gets to the volume.
    In a 50's; the volume pot dial Range is substantially shortened.
    Example; dialing down from 10 (on the guitar vol knob) to 7 will take your volume from full to almost none.
    A disadvantage most 50,s users get accustomed to.

    • @kuitaristi3003
      @kuitaristi3003 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe because from 60's to forward guitar sound goes more heavy and louder so that means brighter tone (i think). That is usually the answer from some people when asked why they change the wiring to modern. 50's wiring can sound too bright with heavier tones sometimes but peoples can always tweak tone from amps too so it's not problem these days. Modern wiring sounds little better with metal tones because it has more bass.

    Budda, depending on the Tele, year, model, etc the same wiring mod could be done. Same thing, swap the Cap wire on the pot, makes quite the change there too.
    Every LP sytle guitar I've ever purchased the first two changes made if not there already is right to the 50's style wiring and in more recent years changing the Jack to a Puretone (cheap and great mod).
    Question for ya, have you ever really played and checked out a Les Paul with P90's (with 50's wiring)? The stock Gibson P90's are so underrated. If you prefer the tones of single coil Strat/Tele genre, highly recommend the LP with P90's. Yes it's still a single coil, with a fatter more full sound. Similar to you, always preferred single coils and do appreciate and Love my LP with Humbuckers. First LP was a 74 purchased used in 76. Had acquired more over the years. Wasn't till many many years later seeing a P90 LP on sale in a store that caught my interest. Talking with the sales rep it came out the P90's didn't sell at that point at all hence the large discount. Curiosity got me, picked it up and was blown away how terrific the tone was. May be something you want to check out. Think you'll be very pleasantly surprised. Cheers

      In 1990 or so, I was in Gibson Custom Shop W. They gave me a guitar. Rare as hell, Gibson W.R.C. SR-71 Showcase model in white!! Last guitar they had in the shop man! I was looking at black beauties, Les Paul customs Firebirds every model I want now but didn’t choose. So I go to meet Rodger Giffen who was the luthier, and I saw my guitar on the bench next to an Old Les Paul Std. From 30’ away, I felt it!!! I said Rodger? This is a freaky instrument! I said is the neck thinner than a 1957-1960 Les Paul Std is supposed to be? He said “Good Eye”, I said “It ain’t my eye. I know the owner already. It has no SN#?” And it used to belong to Joe Walsh??”he said Right On Tom! I go “That IS #1!!! Jimmy Page’s #1! It’s NOT a copy!” And I ran over to see my guitar next to the guy’s Guitar who I studied to learn from!! I played it. It only had one push pull and that’s on the bottom tone control that had been a push pull for phase. The rest were not there. I love that guitar!
