Rory Lennon The more reasons why I would buy the bluray with special features. So I can watch their postproduction. I did the same thing with the Green Lantern
One scene in particular that worked for me is when they got their powers and I felt like there was legitimate fear. But overall this movie just didn't feel finished. I would give it a 3/10.
Ryan Sampson Yeah especially the Thing begging for Reed's help. I love how Trank said that the movie would be them dealing and trying to survive with there powers but it's only explored in 1 scene.
Agree with the reviews and scores, but HOW can you rate this one over the original and Silver Surfer? Yes, they were disappointing because they were mediocre and played too silly. But this movie is utterly BROKEN after Reed Richards leaves the secret base. In the first half, the only real problem was Ben Grimm utterly disappearing while Reed is at the Baxter. In the second half, NOTHING WORKS. I'll take Jessica Alba, CPT 'Merica, The Play-doh Thing, and Mr. Welsh vs Electro Doom over this POS any day.
Thomas Mays You make good points but i'd argue that the movie is rushed and put together poorly, but not broken. Every motivation is clearly defined. Although they are not fully developed characters at that point, I do believe that everything they do can be traced back to a reasonable conclusion. the movie is rushed, poorly edited, and occassionally stupid but never broken. Easy to follow and makes sense to the end.
Thomas Mays I, too, feel compelled to defend the honor of the old FF films. They're both embarrassingly campy, but the first one at least, is an infinitely more watchable film than "Fantfourstic." Michael Chiklis nails it as The Thing, Chris Evans brings some genuine charm and humor, and Kerry Washington is excellent, despite having only a small supporting role. Doctor Doom also more or less looks like himself: steel armor, green cloak, not so far off from his standard comic outfit. And those films both had Stan Lee cameos. Apparently, even Stan knew better than to show his face in this one.
Ian Smart I get your perspective, their motivations were presented, but only through awkward exposition and voice over. Nothing was earned. It's like we got the Cliff Notes version of a longer film in the second half. It reminded me of the rushed awkward crammed editing of The Last Airbender. And that, to me, is broken.
The way I take their comments is more of like a this movie aimed higher and missed whereas the others aimed very low and still kind of missed type thing and for the half of the movie that I (and a lot of the collider guys and the OP) think does some right I would say I agree, but it isn't winning by much and the others are probably a little more watchable because they are just silly fun.
Clay Bransom Her change wasn't nearly as drastic as the other people so it makes sense that her abilities were obtained from like the blowback or residual radiation. Hey, none of it makes sense, but if it explodes i would assume those in range would feel some kind of effect.
Clay Bransom There was a blast by the machine because the dimension starting shaking. The blast from the other world was brought with the machine so Sue got hit by it.
Someone put Mark Ellis' analogies on the back of the Blu-Ray box. "OJ Simpson had a better third act in his career than this movie" "It's like a dog I hit in the street and just want it out of it's misery" "A fat baby wrecking sand castles on the beach"
I have to disagree with you, man. The other two were unbearable as heck. They are trying so hard to be funny, but they fall so completely flat. Those two movies are atrocities. They have no redeeming qualities whatsoever. This movie does.
seanshellz Idk. Kate Mara became vastly more attractive to me after this movie. I did not know she had curves and body like that, not to mention that beautiful face. Spandex worked well on her.
Beastinrocks I know! The other to you could sit down with a bag of popcorn and laugh at how bad it is because it doesn't take itself seriously. This one DOES take itself seriously, there for, it is worse.
me and Jon Schnepp are perfectly in sync on how we feel with this movie....I liked it until that one year later part....to add...I feel like Doom shouldnt have even been in this movie...not Victor...but Doom....I feel like the government should have been the enemy of the film....instead of Reed running away ...have him free everyone else and they all disappear ....then have the scene with Reed trying to build the new pod and the government using some other brainy nerd track him and they fight the entire 4 in the woods and then have Dr Storm stop the fight and ask them for help against a terroist plot or something and then they get left alone by the government and they take over the Baxter Building ...then show Doom like in a mid credits scene say ...Doom is coming ....I mean...let Doom be the 2nd movie villain...thats just my take....but maybe we all need to come to the conclusion that F4 may just not need to be a live action movie EVER
I actually liked the first two acts and also thinking to myself, am I the only one who's liking this? But that third act was just so rushed and forced, didn't feel that Josh Trank directed that. And I actually liked Doom, but he was so wasted as a character. The final battle was so anticlimactic and just felt so angry leaving the theater, thinking about the potential being so wasted. Nice review you guys!
The thing that makes the Fantastic Four distinct from every other super hero team is the family dynamic. That was completely non existent in this movie. None of them had any chemistry. Hell, when Sue met Reed and Ben, she had more of a spark with Ben.
F4 was Stan Lee's first creation in the Marvel comic revolution of the '60's, and was based more on the sillier superheroes of the '30's & '40's & the not on the character-driven heroes that followed. So the problem was, as popular as they became, they never really worked, and so neither do their movies.
I so agree with John and Dennis about the first act of the film. By the 2nd act of the film, I started noticing the cracks in the film. And then the 3rd act came out of nowhere.
Thank you Mark Ellis for being unbiased in your review, looking out for us movie goers and our hard earned cash. These lack luster films continue to get made as John has stated in the past because we keep on seeing them (not sure why he would want us see this one and support something that has obviously gone for a cash grab and not a quality film that we fans would see numerous times).
I'm more in Mark's camp. I didn't hate the movie(although that is only because I read a LOT of reviews so I knew exactly what I was getting into), but there is NOTHING for me to recommend here. I'll give you that the first half is decent, but the problem is that the first half is setup, and that depends on the payoff, which was horrible in this film. The first half doesn't have much going on other than setup and basic introduction, so it's hard to for me to recommend seeing this film at all. You know a film is bad when they can make very talented actors look like amateurs. Seriously there were scenes where you can tell that the cast(Particularly Jordan and Teller) didn't care and were just there for the paycheck, but admittedly that pretty much comes from the second half, especially the last 10 or so minutes. There was no chemistry between the 4 leads, and a lot of that is because most of the time the 4 characters aren't even sharing screen time. By the time you get to the end and they become the "Fantastic Four" you can't help but feel incredibly awkward at their character interaction since it feels so forced. I'll actually say that the first 2 Fox FF movies are better for the sole reason that things actually happened in those movies and at least had a light, fun tone which made them semi-enjoyable even if they were bad movies. Sorry Schnepp, but I have to say Green Lantern is better than this garbage. A big nitpick for me is the fact that The Thing isn't wearing pants(I know that sounds like an exaggerated fanboy reaction, but hear me out a little bit). It made me question certain parts of his physiology and psychology. He's clearly naked, but yet we see nothing to indicate that he's a male or that he is able to go to the restroom, so is that an intentional statement by the filmmakers that he doesn't need to go to the restroom? If that's so does he not need to eat? Does he even have the necessary equipment to procreate or just have sex in general? If that's the case how does he feel about that incapability? Sex is an important part of life(especially for young adults), so how does he feel about possibly not even having genitalia? What's the situation here? The brilliance of The Thing having pants is that it humanizes the character. The fact that he wears clothes shows that underneath that rocky exterior he's still the kind, loyal, blue-eyed Ben Grimm(plus it eliminates the physiological questions since we can assume that he's got genitalia), and the film missed out on that. Furthermore, since he's clearly naked does he not have a problem with walking around naked everywhere? It would be nice to explore his characterization to know these things, but we never get that chance. We have a guy who was just a normal kid who is being forced to be a weapon for the government, and that is something he didn't prepare or train for, so what are the psychological ramifications of those events. You can't just randomly take an 18 year old kid and tell them to go fight in wars without that having a serious effect on the kid. Especially when they're not allowed to socialize or just be a normal human being. So many missed opportunities with all of these characters, but especially with Ben.
I don't care what you do with the Fantastic 4. Just pull Dr. Doom away from Fox and make him a major villain in the MCU. Doom is one of the greatest Marvel villians of all time. He should be treated as such.
Totally agree with you guys. The first half showed potential and was pretty good then it became a COMPLETELY different movie. What you talked about on movie talk earlier regarding Fox was extremely evident.
I think this was good in the sense that this puts FOX on the spot light, before the "1 year after" you see Trank's Fantastic 4, after that is what FOX did to ruin what could've been a great movie. FOX must know they need to let directors do their job and stop imposing their terms once the prodution has begun, after this they shouldn't dare touch "Deadpool" or "X-Men" otherwise they'll begin drive away writers, actors, and directors for being impossible to work with, and follow the path of studios like "MgM" and go utterly bankrupt! and if they think that can't happen then they are the stubborn naïve fools everyone takes them for. Now if FOX wants to rescue something out of this; not lose a great property, their image and risking their very capital for any future projects, they should bring back Josh Trank, Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater and let them have that “Directors Cut of the Fantastic 4” in the way they wanted the movie to be, for FOX now generates doubt and questionable capabilities as a major film studio. Let the audience (who they live from and are conscious of what they like and deserve) have that one vision for these characters. That if they want to be the ones to continue this franchise and make it profitable, the studio must discus with the director and screen-writers what they would like in a sequel, agree on the terms and let Josh Trank do his thing, the opportunity is far too precious financially and artistically to let it pass, the smart thing to do is make amends and move for something better if not all they look forward as a studio are losses and be a shame for the industry because for the only one this is playing against is them.
In his review, Chris Stuckmann said there is nothing to spoiler about this movie, and he was right, there were little to no spoilers for this movie, and I haven't even seen it!!! I just for came here to here it was garbage.
Dennis!!! I missed you. Also, watching this video with no desire of seeing the movie - couldn't care less about these spoilers - but interested in hearing these guys' opinions.
This is the first time I'm watching a SPOILERS movie review before watching the movie cause I have no interest in seeing Fantastic 4. Now let's get on to the video :D
I don't think that the movie is as bad as many people say. Obviously, that third act ruined the good things the movie was doing. However, I think it's acceptable.
Great review guys I really felt like you guys gave a really fair review to a movie that can be very frustrating but had some good things at least in the first half.
This is the first spoiler review that I watched before I saw the film and now I want to see it even more. I'm so curious about how I personally will feel about it. I feel I'm gonna come out loving it
I always feel like Stuckmann's reviews are pretty full of hot air. He loves raving about how bad movies are, without actually going into detail about what makes them so bad. At best he'll point out a shot he didn't like. He reminds me of my friend's girlfriend whenever we watch a horror movie. "It was so bad!" What didn't you like about it? "It was stupid." How so? "It was so bad!"
Over the weekend, HitFix’s Donna Dickenssuggested an awesome idea where the Fantastic Four were alive and active in the 1960s of the MCU, giving them the opportunity to interact with folks like Hank Pym, Howard Stark and Peggy Carter. A mission gone wrong saw them lost in space, only to return in the modern MCU without missing a beat. It’s an interesting way of staying true to the idea of Marvel’s FIRST Family, while also explaining why we haven’t seen them yet in the MCU. Plus, it connects the team with Iron Man and Cap in an immediate way, given their established relationship with Howard Stark and Peggy Carter.
It's 9% on rottentomatoes... a lot of people were guessing that this movie would be bad, but I don't think ANYONE thought it was going to be Catwoman bad...
Justice Suks Unless Fox "gives' the rights back(highly doubt Fox would do that) or if Marvel/Disney approach Fox to buy the rights back(I highly doubt Marvel would do that), the "soonest" FF4 will go back home to Marvel is about 7 years from now. As long as Fox never begins actual production of another FF4 film.
Jennifer Hamels I feel like if we can get one more of these where Josh Trank can make is vision with little interference, we might get a good fantastic four movie. (wild thought i know) I like the cast, the parts I liked felt very strong, and I want Everyone involved to be sucessful. If the movie tanks, it'll b for good reason, but if it is successful enough to garner a sequel, lets hope it'll be a good one. I mean look at the talent involved. Laws of probability has to let at least one of these things be good, right?!
ekjudo you forget the main thing in Hollywood is greed, they would just as soon keep the rights and put out a terrible movie to keep the rights so that someone else does not get the rights and make a blockbuster
Great to see Dennis again. I haven't seen the movie because I will wait for cable or VOD. Just wasn't digging anything but how The Thing looked from the trailers.
According to the latest print issue of Entertainment Weekly (via Comic Book Movie), things were incredibly tense. Trank reportedly had issues forming a coherent vision for the film, producer Simon Kinberg was brought in to help, but Trank wasn’t happy with the changes they made and wrote another draft, which caused delays. Then the studio cut the budget by $30 million, down to $120 million, which Trank didn’t think was enough to fulfill his vision, scenes were removed, and decisions were taken out of his hands. All of this and more bubbled over during production. According to the article:
Haven't seen the movie and really don't plan on doing so, was just eager to see the discussion you had on it! Can't believe Fox has dropped the ball again, what a shame.
Theres actually 4 fantastic 4 movies a rare straight to vhs fantastic 4 movie from the 1990s marvel paided to have it pulled and made straight to vhs that very first fantastic 4 movie is the most true to character depiction of the fantastic 4...but be warned the cgi and editing is terrible
I'll be honest. I liked the beginning too. Had the entire movie had a good pacing, maybe it would've been good. Or maybe if Fox just let Trank do his Job instead of taking over the editing and reshooting everything. What killed it for me were the following: - Reed is disqualified from the competition for no good reason - Reed doesn't request that Ben be allowed to stay with him for that Baxter building thing, despite Ben having helped him get that far - It's out of character for Reed or Victor to get drunk. Pretty sure they only did that to explain why they would do something as stupid as going to that other dimension - They just completely let Ben into the building with the only justification being Reed says to them "He's with me" - Reed leaves for a year and with all his intelligence, can't find some way to send a message to his friends saying "hey, I'm trying to fix this. Try and keep the army off my back." Or at least, something along the lines of that. And don't say there was no way to do that. This asshole built a functioning teleportation device while he was in primary school. I'm certain he could do that. - Like stated in the video, Reed gives no explanation to Ben about what he's been doing the past year, even if it wouldn't have worked, he didn't even try - When they bring Reed back to the place, he and Johnny are supposedly bros because they got drunk together that one time. - Why did Doom want to destroy the Earth again? Out of character. Plus, if he just wanted to stay in that dimension, why did he let them take him back? Surely he had enough power to stop them from bringing him back - When Doom's fighting the Four, aside from apparently all tension being resolved in the group, Doom seems to be able to control their powers. 1. How the f*ck is he doing that? 2. Why didn't he immobilize them like that, then blow up their faces? - How did Doom survive in the other dimension? No food, no water or anything. Or is that just a part of his extremely vague powerset of: ~ Controlling other people's abilities ~ Blowing up people's faces ~ Opening Black Holes ~ Creating capes out of.. nothing ~ And apparently, being able to live without food, water, or breathable air Damn. That was just me having a rough run-down of the movie based off the poor quality version I watched online a few days ago. I should work with CinemaSins.
I actually work at a movie theater, so they screened it for us, I got to see it, and yah, I probably agree the most with Mark, you guys said it all, it just completely derails after the middle where we dont get to see any character, any team forming, or any villain being developed. To chime in on your sequel talk, I worked opening night, usually the busiest show time for a superhero summer blockbuster, not even half the theater was full for the 730 show, and almost every member of the audience expressed some form of hate towards this movie. When the general audience that usually accepts a Transformers or Pixels says that about your movie, I don't think you're getting a sequel, especially after they revealed the box office for Friday night tracking at just half of the initial projections
I really think that FOX must give this characters back to Marvel. Let them keep X-men but the Fantastic Four need something to bring them back to life,
I don't think you can judge this Fantastic Four movie compared to the previous FF movies. Roger Corman's FF movie was made only because they had to in order to keep the rights to the franchise. The two other films were created right as the tone of comic book movies was being changed by Christopher Nolan's dark and gritty, hyper-realistic approach.
Great review guys.i am so not bothered about this movie i watched anyway.i had my doubts about this reboot ever since the announcement.the premise sounded bad and the trailers just confirmed it for me.i will see it just to say ive seen it.
It's funny because this is the only spoilers review I've ever watched before watching the movie. This totally shows my level of enthusiasm I have for this movie.
Chad Hotelling I've looked at my own crap for a good amount of time, if F4 is better than the last two I'd probably would want to watch the film. Unless there's a peanut or corn in there.
Trust me Chad I have. I know it's just a joke but it's seriously not as bad as watching shit. There are some redeeming qualities to this movie, though there are very few.
I got back from seeing the movie a little while ago. This movie was terrible. Positives: -The first act was okay, had some promise -The acting was pretty good -The Thing looked really good -The chemistry between Reed and Ben was good for a while -The one scene where Doom was blowing people's heads up in the hallway Negatives: -They RUINED Dr. Doom! He was both horrible and a waste of a villain! -The plot was terrible and didn't make any sense -There was no chemistry between any of the 'heroes' -The CGI was awful aside from the Thing -Terrible dialogue -Poorly written -Poorly directed -Poorly edited -Bad humor/jokes when it was supposed to be there -Missing scenes -The action was bad -The third act/ending of the film is one of the worst I have seen in a long time Overall I give this movie a 3/10. One of the worst films I have seen this year. Biggest disappointment of the year. I thought this movie was worse than the other 2 Fantastic Four movies that Fox did. Worst comic book movie I have seen since Ghost Rider 2.
Hey guys. I love your comments. I watched the Fantastic Four and although not a great movie, I thought it was good enough to not be the piece of turd you guys claim it to be. There are some very good points that you guys made that I agree with and some that I don't. I'll take a moment to combat some points I don't agree with. 1. Not enough action? Yes, I could have use a little more action but I was not bother by the lack of action throughout the movie. I really enjoy the pace of story telling. Much like Chronicles. It was more about character development. There is something to say about a good movie with just good story telling and not action. (I'm not saying this is it, just that it was OK that it didn't have the action sequence everyone is asking for.) 2. Why did the guard let in Ben Grimm? The reason the guards let Ben Grimm into the Baxter building was because Reed Richards vouched for him. Reed was the top scientist at the lab. I'm assume it took more than a year to put that transporter together and during that time the guards would have gotten to know Reed and the value he is to the project. 3. How does Dr. Doom know he has power and can kill people with it? If you recall, Reed was looking at the monitor and notice the landscape has change. Reed was saying "it doesn't look the same"...something along that line. This was a hint that Victor was terraforming Planet Zero. Victor spent a year on the planet exploring his powers and changing the land. By the time he was rescue and brought back to Earth, he had master his powers. Thus, if Victor can move rocks and water, he can move boon and blood cause people to explode and die. 4. Missing scenes that was in the trailer that wasn't in the movie - I can't believe you guys are bring up scenes that was in the trailer and not in the movie. I watch you guys did an episode on this a while back explaining this process and how many movie does this. This was a most asked about questions during the Amazing Spiderman 2 and you guys defended on why movies do this...(com' on guys!) 5. Doom's custom is ridiculous - I thought the custom was fine. Its not going to win any awards but Doom's custom makes sense. Jon Schnepp made some good points to why it look the way it did and I agree. 6. Third act, how Dennis can tell they were on set because it was how they mix the sound - In all honesty, unless you are in the field and work on sound checks everyday the majority of the populations can't tell the difference. I'm happy Dennis can (since he is good at his craft) but the 99.9% of the population don't care and can't tell the difference. 7. Why does Doom want to destroy Earth? This was foreshadow in the first act. Victor express his hate on how humans are destroying the world. When the humans return to Planet Zero (which he fear they will) Vector felt like that was an attack on a world that he has created, terraforming. He didn't want humans invading and taking its resources and destroying what he had created in the process. 8. At what point did they (the Fantastic Four) think it was OK to go to Planet Zero without their spacesuits? I think when they sent the monkey to Planet Zero without a spacesuit it confirm that it had breathable atmosphere. (My memory could be off and I could be wrong.) 9. Lots of issues about the backstory about Sony and Trank - Honestly, I really don't care about any of the backstory issues. But by how you guys talk about the issues, it showed that it impacted your experience and expectation when watching the film. (I know that many of us can say that we leave that at the door, but as human beings there are a lot of subconsciousness thoughts that happens that affects our enjoyment.) I feel this was the case for you guys--Just my observation, may not be true. As I watch you guys talk about the movie I notice that how heavily influence you are by the disagreements of Sony and Trank and how influence you are by each other. Really take a step back and ask yourself if you watch this by yourself without hearing how much the others didn't like the film, would you still feel the same way. From watching you guys I see that you all build off each other. A good movie becomes a great movie and a not so good movie becomes the worst movie. I love they show and I enjoy your conversations. Keep up the good work team.
Bruce Yang im happy someone was able to like the movie, but, structuraly the movie was a mess, and that by itself, is a big problem, the dialogue and the amount of exposition was bland, and excessive... but the thing is, " I thought it was good enough to not be the piece of turd you guys claim it to be. " that you are right, you thought it was good enough, but it doesnt mean others will, there are people out there that love batman & robin, and they can feel the same thing, they arent wrong, its taste and tolerance, ASM2 was a better structured movie, with not only a defined start middle and end, but also, with good parts in there, and schnepp, probably hated more than FF... there are others that are the oposite, they didnt like ASM2 but hated this one... in the end, its like i said, you liked, good for you, but there are others that didnt, and right now, they seem to be the majority, its as simple as that. Who is right and who is wrong doesnt matter.
Marcos Danilo Thanks Marcos. I guess my point I was trying to making was the post itself. I see so much hate for this film, I feel that there needs a different voice to kind of give a balance to the subject. I totally agree that FF is not perfect. But I disagree that its as bad as they make it. I would disagree that the major problem was structurally. I feel that the beats were fine. What was lacking for me was more developments of certain scenes which the Collider Crew allured to. But that is jut a difference of opinions. What may work for me may not work for you and vice versa. One thing I do observe is that people seem to jump on the band wagon of FF hate. If someone is loud and animated and say that the movie is great. Other tend to agree or else they feel stupid for not seeing the finer points in the movie. The same is true when someone is shouting that something is bad. People are afraid to speak up if they like a movie since the loud and animated people are saying its bad. "How can you like that movie ...xxxx is so bad in acting, the custom didn't look like the comic book...blah blah blah. Movie is subjective. Everyone is different. That the facts not an opinion. :)
I actually liked the idea of a slow build and waiting till the very end to bring them together. That 1 year later hurt. There should of been some sort of training and scientific research montage between them 3 and Reed. Also the ending needed to be a longer. I can't believe this movie was only and hour and a 1/2. In todays world you'd think it'd be illegal for a superhero movie to be less than 2 hours. This movie reminded me alot of the maze runner and mocking jay part 1. You just tell this beginning story and don't really finish it. I want more. I want to see what's next. Also there's rumors that a sequel is pushed back but isn't there already somewhat of a confirmation like Terminator Genisys that no matter what, bad or good, this movies getting a sequel just due to rights and all. Also thank you for saying at the end don't just say its crap if you didnt see it. The movies getting more negative reviews than total people who bought tix. If all those people actually went and saw the film it'd grossed 100 mill
I wonder if Marvel can sue Fox for damages? This is the third FF film Fox has produced, and all they have succeeded in doing is damage Marvel's property. Are they doing it on purpose? Marvel needs to take back the rights to it's First Family. Nuff Said.
Dennis said it best. I didn't care one bit about it being just another fun or funny superhero movie. I wanted it to do something different. The sci-fi/horror tone in the first half was pretty solid (the reactions to the powers and the Doom hallway scene were definitely the highlights), but then the movie suddenly became a generic superhero movie with an incoherently messy, awful finale. That last scene was cringe-worthy beyond belief too.
This was NOT the best Fantastic 4 movie. It was the worst one. This movie was absolute garbage. I didn't think Ghost Rider 2 could be topped as the worst comic movie of all time, but this garbage took that crown. TERRIBLE!
Great review you guys! I'd have to agree that the first act is great! It builds and hints at some great things to look forward to but then it falls flat on its face and struggles to get back up. I give it a 4.5/10 and 2/5 Stars
Seen the movie yesterday, I agreed with John, it has good setup but the 3rd act is just... by the time it ended, I was asking myself what just happened? This is better than the other 2 F4.
I liked the movie and would happily watch it again. I wish that you guys would've discussed the fact that Fox took 3 major fight scenes out of the final cut. I really do hope that they release a directors cut of the movie so I can see what Tranks vision was in full. I hear what you guys are saying about it, there are some things that I cannot argue but I will say I do like the film. My score would be 6/10
Having had a day to reflect on the movie, I think I agree the most with Mark on this one. Honestly, the first half was alright, but nothing overly special. I did like the kid scene, but I'd seen that before when I went to go see the better comic book movie that is still playing, Ant Man. I found the way they got their powers beyond stupid, Doom looked like a silver and green glowy crash test dummy. The scenes of the body horror stuff, specifically Reed forcing his arms back to normal was good, and the effects on the Thing were good. I remember looking at the amount of VFX people in the credits, and immediately thought "they were all there to work on the Thing, and they were given an extra load of laundry they didn't want to worry about." This movie is awful. I'd say it's a 2.5/10 at best. I'm personally hoping for a Director's Cut, but there's likely a snowman's chance with the Human Torch that this thing is gonna get that. Seriously Fox, you barely do X-Men right in my eyes, give the rights back to Marvel. That way, there is at least a SMALL chance we'll get a better final product than the load of BS we have now.
On Eli Manning - His first year in the NFL was 2004, and the first of the 2 Super Bowl Championships was the 2007 Season - I am Giants Fan so that clicked in my head automatically when Eli was mentioned - so that part is fine. On the Movie in General - While I agree it could have been more "Fun" at times, and things could been more fleshed out and scenes that were in the trailer, that were taken out could have been left in and improved the movie (Where the studio did get involved - From about the point of just before 1 year later) - I didn't hate it at all - I liked it, not loved it. I understand and agree with some of the flaws you felt the movie had - But I was into the story, the characters and I like the special effects for the most part. From everything your saying, it sounded like the studio got involved and didn't let Trank present the movie he wanted to. They hired him - they should have trusted him. If they didn't - They should not have hired him in the first place. If there is a 2nd one, I'm sure if they have spoken to him already - Their first call will be to Brian Singer.
I normally don't watch spoiler reviews without watching the movie... but since from all the bad rep, I'm just gonna get your guys take on the movie and save my money.
Great review guys! I'm sorry, but I'm just not the type of guy that goes and watches a movie that everyone says is bad. Maybe I'll rent it when the time comes, but I'm not wasting time and money on something that I know I won't enjoy. I can't stand incomplete things.
Scenes from the trailers not in the movie and three action scenes also apparently cut? One of them is probably The Thing airdrop. With the reshoots and everything left out of the final product, that tells me that there HAS to be a better movie in there somewhere. Would it be something that the haters would like better? I don't know. I'm sure it can be salvaged to a degree at least.
Don't agree with the views on the beginning. To me, it was a mash-up of Jimmy Neutron and Meet the Robinsons. And the relationship between Reed and Ben felt like it was ripped off from a Wildcards novel, where the wimpy guy has a friendship with a tough dude whose dad owns a junkyard. The science was ridiculous and the notion that Doctor Storm was recruiting scientists at a high school science fair felt like it was ripped off from an Atomic Robo comic. And it got worse from there!
+Richard Dufault Finally someone with taste! Trank had no respect for the source material. He just wanted to make it his own, and his ideas were crap. I mean, they get their powers from drunk driving a teleporter? Fox stepped in to try and fix it and failed miserably. Trank should stick to original scripts.
they should of had a montage over the year they skipped, and even showed what doom was doing back on the other dimension, it would of been cool if Doom built a transporter and found a way back, so he could seek revenge on "those who left him behind". Plus the should of worked on the action and character relations. I haven't seen a superhero film this short in a long time.
i was pretty bummed that they skipped the discovery of powers bit with the 'one year later' cutaway. but honestly, it did make sense as to the story they wanted to tell. the flow of it didn't really seem disjointed, if the story they wanted to tell was 'what are the consequences of the government using suddenly superpowered teenagers and the pursuit of greed'. however, the movie didn't seem to have a focus, and that's where it seemed like it failed. I wish this would have been two movies instead. The first being teenagers coming to terms with their powers, and then the next being the government wanting to use them. either way, i feel that the problems with this movie are on par with 2008's The Incredible Hulk, which, to me, made me feel NOTHING for the title character, SKIPPED the discovery of his powers, ASSUMED that the audience would know his backstory through newspaper articles(which is a step up in Fant4stic, which at least had video footage.) and was incredibly BORING until RDJ showed up. One thing Hulk was better at was at least they had more action sequences. But action sequences without substance is exactly what people hate about the Transformers movie series.
ColliderVideos do you think switching the origins of Reed and Doom would have made for better characters? They should have made Reed be the failed scientist who started the project and then left and made Doom the newcomer. That way they could have built chemistry between Doom and Susan which would have changed once Reed came back and set up a real rivalry and given a reason for Doom to want revenge.
Just saw the movie, and I think my expectations were so low for this that I actually liked it. I can totally see how you guys disliked it though. All of the scenes that were supposed to be funny fell completely flat, and yeah, there was no action. However I did find enjoyment in the development of all the characters in the beginning, so I'm actually curious about a sequel.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got to say, This movie is not as bad as what critics and Marvel fanboys has been saying. The first half was so great, the tone of dark scientific horror that director Josh Trank wanted was in there. This film really had many potential if Fox studio didn't put their uneducated hands on this film. The movie was short because Fox screw it over and fuck up the second half of the film. With that being say I still give it 1.5/5 The good/Cast was great, tone was great. The bad/ Film was choppy, Doom didn't have any spot light, almost now action scene, and it was too short of a film. I agreed with Schnepp it was great until Doom came. Doom was my favorite villain too.
To Campea's point about the line from Dr Storm, "my son can build anything" then first scene we see is him ruin the car well in the trailer you see Johnny work on a car so clearly it was one of the scenes that got scrapped
I also really liked the movie up until that time jump ahead one year. The tone and horror elements really intrigued me. The moment when they returned from Planet Zero after Victor had been trapped was really well done. The shot of Johnny's body laying motionless and burning really stuck out to me. I also liked Doom for what we got but he was underused so badly and it was unfortunate. I would love to see a sequel because I love the idea of the Fantastic Four and the cast is so talented. Bring in a new director and maybe a new writer (I'm not off on Kinberg quite yet) and we could get something really cool.
I think i enjoyed this movie more then antman, this is a FANTASTIC movie and my fav scene was when dr doom is killing everyone, he looks awesome, i never cared for him before, but this movie makes him badass, i didint care much for the set up but it gets good when they become superheroes, and the final battle is amazing. The other 2 movies plus the one from the 90s are some of my fav superhero movies, and this can be added to the list now too. 9.5/10
One major part I didn't like in the movie was as you guys said is why wasn't Sue Storm there with the rest of the team? It would have given us the generalization of the title FANTASTIC FOUR, not four guys getting radioactive stuff on them plus a girl getting hit by a EMP. That part totally killed the four in FF4 because one was missing in action and got her powers by luck.
I would watch a documentary about the production of this film.
Rory Lennon I can imagine it "Directed by John Schnepp: Fant4stic: What the fuck happend?!"
marco acuna FTW
Rory Lennon The more reasons why I would buy the bluray with special features. So I can watch their postproduction. I did the same thing with the Green Lantern
Rory Lennon Over watching the actual film
It'd be interesting. I'd watch it. I wanna see the conflict between the directors and studio and the drama of the actors. xD
One scene in particular that worked for me is when they got their powers and I felt like there was legitimate fear. But overall this movie just didn't feel finished. I would give it a 3/10.
Yes, that scene was good
Ryan Sampson Yeah especially the Thing begging for Reed's help. I love how Trank said that the movie would be them dealing and trying to survive with there powers but it's only explored in 1 scene.
Ryan Sampson It felt like a horror film at that moment
What a dream team I miss these days
R.I.P Schnepp
Agree with the reviews and scores, but HOW can you rate this one over the original and Silver Surfer? Yes, they were disappointing because they were mediocre and played too silly. But this movie is utterly BROKEN after Reed Richards leaves the secret base. In the first half, the only real problem was Ben Grimm utterly disappearing while Reed is at the Baxter. In the second half, NOTHING WORKS. I'll take Jessica Alba, CPT 'Merica, The Play-doh Thing, and Mr. Welsh vs Electro Doom over this POS any day.
I agree
Oh man Campea's impression of Torches dad has got me rolling!
+Matt Mcandrew haha have you even seen Forrest Gump?
Haha mine too dude, but I live in Bama and it's literally everyone's fave around here lol. I just didn't hear Forrest in his impression.
awesome
Wait Wait Wait.....Sue got her powers cause she was close to them? WTF
I think because she was close to the machine that sent them
Clay Bransom Her change wasn't nearly as drastic as the other people so it makes sense that her abilities were obtained from like the blowback or residual radiation. Hey, none of it makes sense, but if it explodes i would assume those in range would feel some kind of effect.
Clay Bransom There was a blast by the machine because the dimension starting shaking. The blast from the other world was brought with the machine so Sue got hit by it.
It still looks and seems like lazy writing
Clay Bransom Trust me, it is
Someone put Mark Ellis' analogies on the back of the Blu-Ray box.
"OJ Simpson had a better third act in his career than this movie"
"It's like a dog I hit in the street and just want it out of it's misery"
"A fat baby wrecking sand castles on the beach"
"If Dr. Doom has the ability to fry people's faces' then why the hell was he having fisty cuffs with Mr. fantastic." That was hilarious 😂😂😂
The last 2 Fantastic Fours are at least bearable, unlike this piece of crap.
So I'd say Fant4stic is worse than the last 2.
I have to disagree with you, man. The other two were unbearable as heck. They are trying so hard to be funny, but they fall so completely flat. Those two movies are atrocities. They have no redeeming qualities whatsoever. This movie does.
Isaac Banks i liked those films, but it was a different time. Id probably hate them now but if i never rewatch, i have good memories
seanshellz Idk.
Jon Schnepp's next movie:
Fan-four-stick 4: WHAT HAPPENED!?!
Best part of this movie was when it was over and I lift the theater came home and watch four grown men just rip it apart, best film experience ever
The shit has hit the fan...
...tastic four.
That's all I've got.
Just going to watch this instead of going to see the movie, who cares. Would rather support you guys.
It seems Fantastic Four will be the biggest comic book movie financial flop since Green Lantern.
you said it was better than the other two fantastic 4s......
You take that shit back
Thank you Mark Ellis for being unbiased in your review, looking out for us movie goers and our hard earned cash.
The first 2000s Fantastic Fours were the Dark Knight compared to this
Just my opinion
22:04 That statement would change in just hours.
The first half of the movie is Ok. I think the last half of the movie is sooooooo bad that it makes the first half SEEM good.
Is this movie worse than IM 3, Raul? Lol
Yes. At least ironman 3 makes sense. And has some story to it. (Even though that story is terrible). And at least not boring.
I don't care what you do with the Fantastic 4. Just pull Dr. Doom away from Fox and make him a major villain in the MCU. Doom is one of the greatest Marvel villians of all time. He should be treated as such.
I've read and watched a bunch of reviews and I'm dying to see this!
Totally agree with you guys. The first half showed potential and was pretty good then it became a COMPLETELY different movie. What you talked about on movie talk earlier regarding Fox was extremely evident.
wow Dennis is still alive.
7:50 gotta love those moments when John drops the restraints and goes full sweaty.
Wow u ruined the whole movie for me.. Major spoilers 😡
Jorge Luna uh... hope you're being sarcastic. It says Fantastic Four Spoilers in the video title
Lol
Haven't seen this comment in a while
Jorge Luna What's a spoiler? Oh you idiotz!
Great video guys!
ColliderVideos guess I'm an idiot gonna watch it
In his review, Chris Stuckmann said there is nothing to spoiler about this movie, and he was right, there were little to no spoilers for this movie, and I haven't even seen it!!! I just for came here to here it was garbage.
Dennis!!! I missed you. Also, watching this video with no desire of seeing the movie - couldn't care less about these spoilers - but interested in hearing these guys' opinions.
***** You're very welcome! Always a pleasure to hear your opinions.
Watching this since I'm not going to be watching the movie anytime soon >_>
This is the first spoiler review that I watched before I saw the film and now I want to see it even more. I'm so curious about how I personally will feel about it. I feel I'm gonna come out loving it
Stuckmann said there was nothing to be spoiled. lol
Ed Farrera Love stuckmann but he kind of overreacted. It aint F bad, maybe C- or D.
Ian Smart its his opinion
I always feel like Stuckmann's reviews are pretty full of hot air. He loves raving about how bad movies are, without actually going into detail about what makes them so bad. At best he'll point out a shot he didn't like.
He reminds me of my friend's girlfriend whenever we watch a horror movie. "It was so bad!" What didn't you like about it? "It was stupid." How so? "It was so bad!"
probably not a spoiler review
10:54 "Oj Simpson has had a better 3rd act of his career than the 3rd act of Fantastic Four"... WOW! I have never heard a review that.. WOW!
Man its a damn good day when Dennis is on!
We need more Dennis!
It's 9% on rottentomatoes... a lot of people were guessing that this movie would be bad, but I don't think ANYONE thought it was going to be Catwoman bad...
Hopefully the rights go back to MCU soon, then Marvel will make a Future Foundation movie.
Jennifer Hamels wonder if they would do the same as Sony is with spiderman, let marvel come in and help consult on next FF movie?
Trank was not the right director for this...
I haven't seen the film but by hearing you guys talk about it, I kinda want to see what the fuss is all about. Very informative you guys, thanks.
What killed it for me were the following:
- Reed is disqualified from the competition for no good reason
- Reed doesn't request that Ben be allowed to stay with him for that Baxter building thing, despite Ben having helped him get that far
- It's out of character for Reed or Victor to get drunk. Pretty sure they only did that to explain why they would do something as stupid as going to that other dimension
- They just completely let Ben into the building with the only justification being Reed says to them "He's with me"
- Reed leaves for a year and with all his intelligence, can't find some way to send a message to his friends saying "hey, I'm trying to fix this. Try and keep the army off my back." Or at least, something along the lines of that. And don't say there was no way to do that. This asshole built a functioning teleportation device while he was in primary school. I'm certain he could do that.
- Like stated in the video, Reed gives no explanation to Ben about what he's been doing the past year, even if it wouldn't have worked, he didn't even try
- When they bring Reed back to the place, he and Johnny are supposedly bros because they got drunk together that one time.
- Why did Doom want to destroy the Earth again? Out of character. Plus, if he just wanted to stay in that dimension, why did he let them take him back? Surely he had enough power to stop them from bringing him back
- When Doom's fighting the Four, aside from apparently all tension being resolved in the group, Doom seems to be able to control their powers. 1. How the f*ck is he doing that? 2. Why didn't he immobilize them like that, then blow up their faces?
- How did Doom survive in the other dimension? No food, no water or anything. Or is that just a part of his extremely vague powerset of:
~ Controlling other people's abilities
~ Blowing up people's faces
~ Opening Black Holes
~ Creating capes out of.. nothing
~ And apparently, being able to live without food, water, or breathable air
Damn.
You know, I know the Nostaglia Critic just did a review on the first Fantastic 4 movie, oh man I hope he does this one
I could take a poop and look at it for 100 minutes and that would still be better than this moive
No... It wouldn't. That's pretty disgusting.
Chad Hotelling Lol!
I got back from seeing the movie a little while ago. This movie was terrible.
Positives:
-The first act was okay, had some promise
-The acting was pretty good
-The Thing looked really good
-The chemistry between Reed and Ben was good for a while
-The one scene where Doom was blowing people's heads up in the hallway
Negatives:
-They RUINED Dr. Doom! He was both horrible and a waste of a villain!
-The plot was terrible and didn't make any sense
-There was no chemistry between any of the 'heroes'
-The CGI was awful aside from the Thing
-Terrible dialogue
-Poorly written
-Poorly directed
-Poorly edited
-Bad humor/jokes when it was supposed to be there
-Missing scenes
-The action was bad
-The third act/ending of the film is one of the worst I have seen in a long time
Overall I give this movie a 3/10. One of the worst films I have seen this year. Biggest disappointment of the year. I thought this movie was worse than the other 2 Fantastic Four movies that Fox did. Worst comic book movie I have seen since Ghost Rider 2.
I completely agree with everything Dennis said, and I'd go 5/10
It's nice to see you guys give a negative review on a movie during its opening weekend. I hope to see more of them.
I would love to be "The Thing" because...well because he rocks
O_O what?
"The Thing" has no 'thing'...but if he had, he would put her 'on the rocks' every time they would have sex.
Pilo ᴹᴱᴻᵀᴬᴸ ᴹᴱᴸᵀᵈᵒᵚᵑ funny enough, im pretty sure the other movie version had something...
Pilo ᴹᴱᴻᵀᴬᴸ ᴹᴱᴸᵀᵈᵒᵚᵑ or she would get his rocks off :-)
Benjamin X Wow what a pun. Cue the CSI: Miami theme.
Renwick Davis ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
(I'm not saying this is it, just that it was OK that it didn't have the action sequence everyone is asking for.)
This was a most asked about questions during the Amazing Spiderman 2 and you guys defended on why movies do this...(com' on guys!)
(My memory could be off and I could be wrong.)
I'm on the same side as Dennis where he said it all got downhill after '1 Year Later'
My score would be 6/10
I've missed Dennis. Good to see ya, buddy!
Haha John you got me dying 😂😂😂 with that really!!! really!!!! My son Johnny can build anything 😆
Fant4stic was terrrrrrrrrrrrible
Having had a day to reflect on the movie, I think I agree the most with Mark on this one. Honestly, the first half was alright, but nothing overly special. I did like the kid scene, but I'd seen that before when I went to go see the better comic book movie that is still playing, Ant Man.
I found the way they got their powers beyond stupid, Doom looked like a silver and green glowy crash test dummy. The scenes of the body horror stuff, specifically Reed forcing his arms back to normal was good, and the effects on the Thing were good. I remember looking at the amount of VFX people in the credits, and immediately thought "they were all there to work on the Thing, and they were given an extra load of laundry they didn't want to worry about."
This movie is awful.
I'll wait for it on VOD. Really enjoyed the review. New segment... Terrible Movie Reviews
Thanks guys, I was looking for a fleshed out full spoiler. = )
Now if fantastic 4 fails in the box office is it possible that Disney Marvel could get the rights back for the movie ??
I will just give it a 2.5/10.
they should of had a montage over the year they skipped, and even showed what doom was doing back on the other dimension, it would of been cool if Doom built a transporter and found a way back, so he could seek revenge on "those who left him behind".
Dr.Doom has the potential to be the greatest cinematic comic-book super villain. All they have to do is make him like he is in the comics.
I recommend people to go see it in the theater cause it is not what everyone says it is. It's actually pretty fantastic (no pun intended).
My least favorite movie of the year so far. On the bright side, CinemaSins is going to have a field day with this one.
I agree with most of the points. And this have got to be the funniest spoiler review i ever seen. Good luck fantastic four
They had a good idea with the government using the, but nothing happened with that. It seems like Trank just got fired halfway through
One major part I didn't like in the movie was as you guys said is why wasn't Sue Storm there with the rest of the team? It would have given us the generalization of the title FANTASTIC FOUR, not four guys getting radioactive stuff on them plus a girl getting hit by a EMP. That part totally killed the four in FF4 because one was missing in action and got her powers by luck.
I am planning to be part of this experience. I will spend money on this sometime at the local redbox.
