Just saw the film. Loved it! One of my favorite scenes was the scene about "Project Elrond". The whole crew talking about Lord of the Rings with Boromir (Sean Bean) sitting right there. Funny scene :).
+SG1Shova Yeah, but even if thats wasn't the case you can still have an Indian name from generations back depending on who's passed the name down, my families generation is only ⅛ chinese and many of us still have a chinese surname, whilst some of us having blond/red hair, blue eyes etc.
+lucy rebecca Yeah, its not strange at all. Most western Black people have adopted surnames for one reason or another. There could be many reasons why he had that surname. His father could have been Black and knocked up an Indian woman and they didnt get married, so she gave her child her surname. If you watch sports its not uncommon to see Black players with Asian and Latin surnames.
+jacob harris haha yeah, thats where most came from, including mine, but I didnt want to get into it. Its such a good movie, and being distracted by Vincent's surname is kinda silly in this day and age.
I read the book and just saw the movie. The name change makes complete sense to me now, I didn't know why they had done that, so thank you for that. For the most, I thought they did a great job with the movie. They had to take out a lot from the book but it makes sense due to time constraints and they changed a couple of things I wish they wouldn't have but it didn't bother me too much. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend you read the book. Thanks for the review guys!
Great review! I have only read the book, and I agree with Mark. The character is so likeable that you just want to spend all the time listening to him, how he encounters problems and attempts to fix it, after a slur of colorful language of course. I have heard that they left out the bit in the book in which his rover runs over soft sand on the way down the Schiaparelli crater and rolls over like a tumble weed. I just love how everyone at NASA is just shitting bricks over it when Watney was like "well things didn't go at plan" ,and went on joking about it with this "oh it's just Wednesday for me". I sure hope that they kept the bit with the hydrazine though!
I loved it! And it made me feel really bad! I think his aloneness on Mars brought me back to a deployment when I was incredibly sad and lonely. I think it was the most realistic (for me anyways) emotional portrayal I've seen. Constantly joking through the movie, to the part when he realizes it's pretty much over, and breaks down. Amazed! I can't watch it again, but I did love it!
Finally saw this movie tonight. Had to rush right over and catch your review. I loved it. Loved the humor. Loved the ending. I'll describe the film in one word, tension. Thanks guys for being there for me when I really need to discuss a movie and no one around me cares. 😁
it was great listening you talk about this movie, i am so happy ridley scott is finally back which pumped me even more for prometheus sequels. this movie is matt damon's baby, he has been on board since the beginning and it paid off. this movie has to get some oscar love
I could rant about some things you guys missed but you guys are the best. I loved this movie and can't wait to see it again. Reminded me of those great movies I watched with my sisters growing up. Its a keeper set in stone or Martian rock. Well done guys.
Perfect timing. Just got back from seeing this and I feel like I'm an astronaut back from space. I've always been excited to see what Ridley Scott does next. Now more than ever. Did anyone else get an 'Alien' feel from some of the scenes? I remember three or so, the most notable one being their helmets and the lights on them in the dark. There's just something special about the way a space ship and a space station looks and feels in a Ridley Scott production.
SO F'ING GOOD! Damon, Daniels, and Ejiofor were all great. The dialog was smooth, flawless and "real". The pace of the movie and the editing kept me riveted from the onset to the end.
On the subject of the main character's emaciation at the end, I heard Matt Damon say on a recent chat show that he was willing to lose the weight, but the way they were filming it (and with other obligations he had before and after) he simply couldn't lose the weight (to regain muscle/health) in time. So that was a body-double from Eastern Europe with Damon's head added digitally.
Read the book and then saw the movie (3D). LOVED both. Wish that the movie had more of the details that were in the book, but that would have stretched this movie to LOTR series size. There is a major character change in the last action scene of the film which differs from the book, but still made for a good story. There is also the addition of a scene at the end of the movie not in the book which I did not mind as it fit the movie's tone. Sorry to be so vague, trying to avoid spoilers.
Drew Goddard's screenplay keeps a lot of the heart and wit and science from Andy Weir's novel, but a little too much of it got cut for me to call it perfect (especially the science!). There was also a noticeable chunk of time where we cut back to Watney on Mars and I thought "wow, we haven't seen you in a while." But Scott comes to Goddard's rescue with a couple of glorious scenes that didn't make it into the book - namely when an emaciated Watney covered in scabs emerges from the shower, a stark contrast to the bulky guy we saw strip down at the start. I also found a tacked on ending to be a bit schmaltzy, especially the resolution of Mara and Sebastian Stan's 4-second romance. That would've been the first thing on the chopping board if I'd adapted the book.
Loved this movie, saw it this morning in RealD 3D and was completely immersed into this universe... as Mark said, I felt like I was watching a docudrama about actual historical events. I thought the cinematography and directing were superb as well as the performances. All-in-all -- one the best movies of the year, by far!
I loved this movie from beginning to end. Matt Damon is awesome as Mark Watney and an outstanding supporting cast. Also great writing from Drew Goddard and fantastic direction from Ridley Scott. Awesome movie, 10/10
My top ten list is always changing, but it always includes empire strikes back, Raiders, jaws, apocalypse now, pulp fiction and now the Martian, there are a few others that I like as much as the Martian but for me this is the best film I've seen in at least 10 years, honestly I saw pulp fiction about 10 years ago when I was 16 or so and not since that movie has something moved me enough to add it to the films above. This film is what Matt Damon will be remembered for much like all of Tom hanks movies or Lawrence of Arabia for Peter o'toole and I think this will be remembered as one of Ridley Scott's masterpieces. It was an unforgettable experience seeing it opening night and will drag people to the theatre tonight and tomorrow and Sunday.
+Kim Murphy The audio book is AWESOME. The actor who did the voices was so good that when I saw the movie, I felt everybody sounded wrong. And I missed the sandstorm scene that was cut out of the movie.
Just being nitpicky but I know a lot of Asians that don't look stereotypically Asian. Hell, I'm park Korean and Chinese and whenever I tell people they won't believe it because I look so non-asiany. Love the spoiler review by the way and love watching y'all everyday!!!
This is my favorite movie so far this year. It reminded me of the first time I saw A New Hope and Jurassic Park. I agree with everything these guys said. I'm with Mark 10/10. I do plan on reading the book and seeing this film again.
When Jeff Daniels confronted Sean Bean about leaking information did anyone else have a small feeling in the back of their mind that Sean Bean was about to die?
My love and respect for Ridley Scott has been restored (Robin Hood, Gahhhh)... I just watched it and I loved every bit of it. It looked great, the dialog and script was great and the performances were fantastic. A very easy movie to recommend for others to watch and enjoy.
Thanks for the video. I agree with the things said about the movie. I liked it to. I would add one thing. The "space pirate" joke is one from the book but does not fit in the context of the movie version. Mark Watley never loses contact with Nasa after getting Pathfinder.
I loved this movie -- I give it a 10 out of 10. I also loved the novel it was based on, and feel this is about as good an adaptation of the novel as I could have dreamed of. By necessity, of course, they had to cut some parts from the story. But it still captures all of the spirit and emotion of the novel. I think it's the best science fiction movie I've seen in a VERY long time. As far as Donald Glover is concerned, he's playing a nerd, not a stoner. And as a fellow nerd, and someone who's familiar with a wide range of nerd behaviors (because no two nerds are exactly alike), I think the fact that he didn't know who Jeff Daniels was is basically an acknowledgement of the aloofness of many nerds, the ability to become totally absorbed by an intellectual problem, while being oblivious to everything else. I know from experience, it's what made me good at my job, while at the same time, sometimes looking 'dumb' to outsiders. I was a systems analyst, and I've had experiences where I'd be staring at a computer screen, so entirely in my own head, that I was oblivious to two people coming into my cubicle to have a conversation (supposedly with me participating), yet I had no idea that that was even happening until I heard my name. I was great with computer code and logic and running projects. But I was terrible with so much else. So to me, Donald Glover was quite recognizable and believable, much more so than almost any other depiction I've ever seen. in TV and movies. You probably didn't recognize that because nerds are almost NEVER depicted realistically.
Just saw it today. I want Jessica Chastains Disco soundtrack soooooooo badly. the last 30-40 minutes of this movie my hands were sweating and my heart was pounding I loved this movie so much. This is probably my favourite film of 2015 so far. Seeing Sicario next week can't wait for that
9.5/10 for me needed a little more backstory on Damon and agree about Clover's character he needed toned down and I didn't believe he didn't know who Jeff Bridges character was. But fantastic movie and plan to see it again maybe next week.
+Terry Silvester Didn't hit me emotionally or thrill me anywhere close to the way interstellar did, so gotta go with interstellar. No scene in Martian was as emotional as Cooper coming back to see the video logs of his children grown up and no scene was as tension filled as the docking sequence...
Just got back from the theater and was astounded by how good it was, especially after seeing Black Mass just five minutes before it considering how dark the first film is compared to the latter. Also, was very surprised by who all was in it, especially McKenzie Davis and Donald Glover.
saw the movie last night, Ridley Scott definitely knocked it out of the park. And its funny how they could've got away with marketing this film as a comedy with the amount of comedy beats in it. Especially enjoyed the lord of the rings joke with sean bean in the conference room, too funny
9/10 is my rating for 'The Martian'. I really enjoyed this film. It's another well crafted, well balanced film. Definitely Top 10 of 2015 worthy, maybe even Top 5. Mission Impossible 5, Fury Road, Ant-Man, Jurassic World are all top films for me. I'd probably slot this in after Fury Road, personally.
In any other year, this would be the early Favorite for Best Picture and Best Actor. This would also win the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation-Long Form in any other year. This will probably win neither with films like Sicario in mainstream cinema and Star Wars: Force Awakens in Science Fiction cinema. It was a great film and will last a long time as a great film.
Watched this movie for the first time today. Don't judge me. I work too much overtime. 😂 Just wanted to say great review guys. I wanted to talk to someone about this movie I just saw, besides the co-worker that mumbled to me at work about it in the next cubicle. I had the pleasure of not seeing any of the trailers that would perhaps have ruined it for me. Let's do this again sometime. And leave those reviews up on TH-cam as long as you can.
"Rich Purnell is a Steely Eyed Bastard" There was enough in the book for two movies and a coming home sequel but the end killed that option. The viral videos they put on youtube filled in Mark Whatney;s backstory. FYI, the book is awesome and very detailed. The movie dumbed down quite a bit of the story.
checked this movie out on Friday and it was a fun time. It is a lengthy movie but to reiterate a point made in the review, it doesn't really feel like it. Matt Damon was great and it was beautifully shot. 9/10 for me personally.
just saw it yesterday and....i LOOOOOVVVVE it...!!!! everything bout it's just soooo note-perfect. and i mean EVERYTHING. and i can't believe you dennis that you'd have a problem with Ejiofor's character's last name. they DO however explain that he's half-Indian (Hindu) and black (Baptist, i think in the movie)..and i dunno bout you, but to me i think Chiwetel does look passable as a half-Indian, half-African-American. and i'm glad they stick with the Indian name, even without Irrfan Khan, cuz, making ejiofor's role as a mixed race DOES add more to it. like i said...i LOOOOOOVVVVE this damn movie.
My top 5 movies this year : 5. Ex Machina 4. Furious 7 3. The Martian 2. Rouge Nation 1. Inside Out Notables I havn't seen include Jurassic World and Straight Out Of Compton but yeah I LOVED this movie.
finally caught The Martian today. Definatly in my top 5 this year so far and can't say a bad word about it. I read (listened) to the book and laughed my ass off, and Matt Damon pulls it off. Take your pick of Supporting Actor nods. An amazing piece of work from an amazing group of film makers. I'm going 9.9/10. 0.1 off for ABBA. I hate them.
I'd go see it again if the theater in my home town did have the screen so dim. I was very disappointed because the screen was very dark and it lost a lot of the quality.
In the book, Kapoor is an Indian. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a half black/ half Indian character. He explains it in 10 seconds. No big whoop. Overall, I think the film could've been rated R to match the book's smartass humor even more IMO. The stakes didn't feel as high cinematic-ally as they did dramatically in the novel - but I get it - they were pressed for running time. I look forward to the Blu Ray.
Dude, African Americans have last names from every ethnicity on the planet. My background is African, Welsh, Scottish and Indian. My last name is Welsh. Some names were slave given. Post slavery, sometimes chosen. I went to high school with a black girl whose last name was Wong. Her family chose that name over a hundred years ago because it was the name of the first family to hire and pay them after being granted freedom.
I have yet to see the movie but read the book and absolutely loved it! From everything that was said it looks like it is exactly like the book which I am very happy about! I have a question though to those who saw the movie.. is there a scene where mark watney has to repair something while listening to the song staying alive? Because that happens in the book and that would be pure comic genius if they made that scene the right way in the movie!
+Tonypepperoni99 He doesn't do that - but you get loads of disco hits as he does his tasks; so they DEFINITELY kept the 70s disco thing going in the movie (ironically, he hates Lewis's record collection - but it's the only music available). Over the end credits, "I Will Survive" is played.
At the end when Watney got skinny, that was a body double (Watney has a towel on his head covering his face when we first see the skinny body) . Watch it closely, you will see they never show Damons face and the body at the same time before he puts his suit on for the rest of the movie.
The shots where they showed he was skinny was a body double and not skinny Matt Damon or CGI. I think that is the only nitpicking I will make that I didn't like because it was weird cut shots from one person's naked skinny body to Matt Damon's body in the suit which did not match at all. Matt Damon's face didn't look skinny at all and body and behaviour still looked normal in the suit as well. But overall loved the film.
I loved the movie! When he lost his potatoes I was so sad! That was my only criticism of the movie was that they didn't explain why he couldn't grow more. U have a potato, you just plant it and it grows (given the right conditions) Was it too cold with just the plastic covering the exit? Was it because he couldn't make water any more?
BAE State What they picked weren't even classics--not the shit that EVERYBODY likes, like BeeGees ... it was crap. Stupidest thing ever. Lemme pick bad music to make people not wanna watch. That soundtrack wont be takin off like Guardians.
oh and i also wanna address the issue with Sean Bean's character's animosity towards Jeff Daniel's. i think it's just normal for the guy heading the working crews to have that kind of "attitude" towards the man in charge, who "represents" the MAN, in the higher ups. i see that EVERYDAY in my office.
I really liked the Martian. Was exciting and funny. I did think it felt a little long. At a certain point you knew that they were going to attempt a rescue so all the problem solving on Earth got kinda boring. They weren't going to just come across a problem and not solve it and the movie ends with him dying. That was the only criticism I had. All the acting was great. I'd say 4.4/5.
This movie is a solid 8/10. Its pacing isn't solid, there are too many actors, nothing really sets itself up well. But the acting, even just by Matt Damon alone is worth seeing. This is better than Cast Away, Apollo 13, Gravity, Interstellar and Moon so if you like those films definitely check out The Martian.
I wouldn't be surprised if theres a directors cut attached to the blu ray. ridley scott always has director cut versions. So i'm sure Ellis will get what he wants lol. The best directors cut imo was Kingdom of Heaven. The theatrical release wasnt great...but holy shit watch the directors cut and it's amazing. it's an hour longer has an intermission and explains a shit ton. So the martian will prob have an added 20 or 30 mins. Def going to see the martian again.
With me, I really liked the movie, but I thought they totally underused the Kristen Wiig and the Donald Glover characters. In the book, the Kristen Wiig character is a much funnier character, which is why I thought the casting was perfect, but they must have cut a lot of her scenes. And I must disagree with Kristian's criticism about spending too much time on Mars. I would have loved more scenes like that, as those were the most compelling scenes in the film in my opinion.
I really never give movies 10/10 so I'm going to give this a 7/10 just for a overall good story and character driven movie. I would of liked a little more back round on Matt Damon's character and I too felt this movie was a tad long.
I enjoyed this movie, just saw it last night!! 9/10!! This is my Ridley Scott go-to #1 movie (surpassing The Gladiator). ANYONE tell if I'm wrong, BUT this movie had a bit of an (**SPOILER ALERT**) ex-machina with the whole Chinese NASA secretly/miraculously having a probe I believe for them to orbit with!!? Still a great movie, I understand that it came from the novel but still: REALLY?? CNASA had a secret PROBE!!!!
Just saw the movie. People were saying this movie was better than Cast Away and stuff. Couldn't disagree more. The movie was alright at best. So damn predictable. The film looked absolutely awesome though.
Thought it was a very good movie only problems was it was just a little too long. no back story for matt damons character and no follow up on sean beans character
+Gary Ervin You're one of these that walks out of the cinema as soon as the end music comes on! (£13 to get in! You should stay for every minute!) Here's what you missed (it's quite a lot!): Over the first part of the end credits we see what happens to the characters during the launch of Ares V. Two of them have a baby together, one gets to be the new head of NASA - the Chinese CSA commanders are now joint leaders of the Ares V project. So it's become an official US-China project. The pilot of the Ares 3 crew goes back up on Ares V. Damon is now a very well respected lecturer in astronaut survival at astronaut academy. I don't think he needed a back story - much as we didn't need one for any of the other characters (or indeed those in Scott's other sci-fi classic, Alien). We get to know him as the film rolls along, and his past doesn't matter at all. Then we see Sean Bean - on the golf course in retirement, and not looking too sad about it! (he was indeed fired for betraying NASA so that the crew could take the decision to go back for Damon - once again, a noble, brave sacrifice by Sean Bean [hahaha])
Yeah I'm in the same boat...I liked it, but I can't gush over it like a lot of others have. And good for them that they enjoyed it that immensely, I just wasn't "over the moon" in love with it. 7/10 too, and I hope it wins a bunch of oscars because I did love the cast and it was a fun flick.
Just saw the film. Loved it! One of my favorite scenes was the scene about "Project Elrond". The whole crew talking about Lord of the Rings with Boromir (Sean Bean) sitting right there. Funny scene :).
I was waiting for him to say something like one simply does not.... :P that would have been awful and amazing at the same time
Same
+Sachan yeah, only thing he lost this time was his job 😀
+Elmin Legend The best part is that "Project Elrond" actually is in the book.
And now I feel comPLETELY dumb for not getting that reference.
Captain Blondebeard: Space pirate extraordinaire and captain of The MAV, convertible class.
Vincent Kapoor addressed the Kapoor name when said he his father was Hindu, and his mother a Baptist, meaning he was mixed.
Loved that as well, very real world !
+SG1Shova Yeah, but even if thats wasn't the case you can still have an Indian name from generations back depending on who's passed the name down, my families generation is only ⅛ chinese and many of us still have a chinese surname, whilst some of us having blond/red hair, blue eyes etc.

The only reason for a black person to have a white surname is SLAVERY!
+jacob harris haha yeah, thats where most came from, including mine, but I didnt want to get into it. Its such a good movie, and being distracted by Vincent's surname is kinda silly in this day and age.

Finally Dennis, someone mentioned Halt and Catch Fire, one of my favorite shows. I vote for a review show next season!

Mars space suit the same colour as BB8 - anyone else think this?
Yup! The 'poster' of Matt Damon sitting and we see him from behind (his back) totally reminded me of BB8 😃
yes

saw this movie will an auditorium full of people and the energy in the room was great. favorite movie of the year by far 9.9/10
I would have been snorting vicodin too being alone on Mars.

This is a video with "spoiler" in the title. Pretty sure you're off the hook lol
Christopher Mendez True Beans. Sometimes I get an attack of "troll paranoia" ;)
+Mariko True I feel like all the details from the books were removed simply because it would throw off the pace and direction of the movie.
Alvin Dang Totally acceptable. What do you think about the changes (from the book) that the movie implemented. I am ok with both versions.
***** I knew that the movie would not go with that visual ;)

Just saw it today. I want Jessica Chastains Disco soundtrack soooooooo badly. the last 30-40 minutes of this movie my hands were sweating and my heart was pounding I loved this movie so much. This is probably my favourite film of 2015 so far. Seeing Sicario next week can't wait for that
CAPTAIN BLOND BEARD. YAR HARR
9.5/10 for me needed a little more backstory on Damon and agree about Clover's character he needed toned down and I didn't believe he didn't know who Jeff Bridges character was. But fantastic movie and plan to see it again maybe next week.
It was better than Interstellar
Hey hey hey that's debatable
+MCruben3000 The martain is great and so is interstellar I give them both a perfect 5/5 but I personally prefer interstellar.
+MCruben3000 No movie is flawless but I was just more entertained by interstellar.
+Terry Silvester I saw booth and I enjoyed interstellar way more, but that doesn't take away from the martian
Watched this movie because of your guy's recommendations. Great movie, thanks!
"Rich Purnell is a Steely Eyed Bastard"
There was enough in the book for two movies and a coming home sequel but the end killed that option.
The viral videos they put on youtube filled in Mark Whatney;s backstory.
FYI, the book is awesome and very detailed. The movie dumbed down quite a bit of the story.
Can't wait to see it again, but this time the extended version on Blu-ray.
checked this movie out on Friday and it was a fun time. It is a lengthy movie but to reiterate a point made in the review, it doesn't really feel like it. Matt Damon was great and it was beautifully shot. 9/10 for me personally.
love the tshirt, dennis! where can I get one of those? :)
just saw it yesterday and....i LOOOOOVVVVE it...!!!! everything bout it's just soooo note-perfect. and i mean EVERYTHING.
and i can't believe you dennis that you'd have a problem with Ejiofor's character's last name. they DO however explain that he's half-Indian (Hindu) and black (Baptist, i think in the movie)..and i dunno bout you, but to me i think Chiwetel does look passable as a half-Indian, half-African-American. and i'm glad they stick with the Indian name, even without Irrfan Khan, cuz, making ejiofor's role as a mixed race DOES add more to it.
like i said...i LOOOOOOVVVVE this damn movie.
The Martian was fantastic! one of my faves of the year for sure along with Inside Out and Mad Max
OMG I can't believe that Elrond and Sean Bean connection went over my head!! Guess my reflex is too slow...
Just saw the movie today and it was awesome! I can't wait to see it again.
I'd go see it again if the theater in my home town did have the screen so dim. I was very disappointed because the screen was very dark and it lost a lot of the quality.
That goes for all 3D films unfortunately. I just got back from the 2D screening and it was crystal bright and white.
Adam we were in 2d as well. I'm saying I'd go back if our theater wasn't a POS
Damn, well hopefully you didn't have to pay $15 to see it. That's the price for the 2D experience in my country. 3D is even worse.
Adam nope it was only $5.50
In the book, Kapoor is an Indian. I look forward to the Blu Ray.
i was imagining Irrfan Khan talking while listening to Kabur parts in the audiobook lol
This movie is the reason I'm going to read the book! Brilliant.
I am certainly going to see.the second time, with a different pair of 3D glasses.
U guys should listen to book. Because then the movie will make more sense. Plus there"s two action scenes that are missing from the movie
Because that happens in the book and that would be pure comic genius if they made that scene the right way in the movie!
nah didn't happen unfortunately
+Tonypepperoni99
He doesn't do that - but you get loads of disco hits as he does his tasks; so they DEFINITELY kept the 70s disco thing going in the movie (ironically, he hates Lewis's record collection - but it's the only music available).
Holy shit Sean Bean didn't die in this movie! It's a miracle!
+Sunset Shimmer the Magical Virgin Smelling Buttshaking Unicorn (Aka Chloe Price)
Still got fired :(
The shots where they showed he was skinny was a body double and not skinny Matt Damon or CGI. I think that is the only nitpicking I will make that I didn't like because it was weird cut shots from one person's naked skinny body to Matt Damon's body in the suit which did not match at all. Matt Damon's face didn't look skinny at all and body and behaviour still looked normal in the suit as well. But overall loved the film.
watched it last night it was great loved it, matt damon is amazing and visually really amazing
When he first got in contact with his crew I teared up. Anybody else? No? ok
Schmoesknows are awesome ! They should have more subscribers.
+Jessica Beardsley Maybe he didn't have the time or the materials to regrow them. Maybe he didn't have enough shit for soil.
The Martian is fantastic! Great acting, great music, great visuals and a really good story. 8.3/10.
Seriously, who here didnt like The Martian??
Idiots
I thought it was a bad movie with a terrible pace and complete lack of suspense.
+derrick s No surprise. Nobody dies. HORRIBLE music.
+Benwane Jones you just didn't like the disco music. It's part of the plot
BAE State What they picked weren't even classics--not the shit that EVERYBODY likes, like BeeGees ... it was crap. Stupidest thing ever. Lemme pick bad music to make people not wanna watch. That soundtrack wont be takin off like Guardians.
What was the deal with the bubble over the truck? He drilled a hole in the roof but we never got to know why?
oh and i also wanna address the issue with Sean Bean's character's animosity towards Jeff Daniel's. i think it's just normal for the guy heading the working crews to have that kind of "attitude" towards the man in charge, who "represents" the MAN, in the higher ups. i see that EVERYDAY in my office.
why didn't Mat Damon not want 2 send a message to his parents the minute he made contact?
I really liked the Martian. Was exciting and funny. I did think it felt a little long. At a certain point you knew that they were going to attempt a rescue so all the problem solving on Earth got kinda boring. They weren't going to just come across a problem and not solve it and the movie ends with him dying. That was the only criticism I had. All the acting was great. I'd say 4.4/5.
Overall pretty good adaptation, but I really wish they would've had time for the inflatable room and the dust storm scenes.
Dennis!-
In the movie Kappour mentions he has a black parent and an Indian parent
With me, I really liked the movie, but I thought they totally underused the Kristen Wiig and the Donald Glover characters. In the book, the Kristen Wiig character is a much funnier character, which is why I thought the casting was perfect, but they must have cut a lot of her scenes. And I must disagree with Kristian's criticism about spending too much time on Mars. I would have loved more scenes like that, as those were the most compelling scenes in the film in my opinion.
Matt Damon looks exactly like BB-8!!! Amazing film though!!!
Wish one of these guys would have read the book...
Great review guys I really enjoyed this movie it's definitely one of the best movie's of the year 5/5
Yes Dennis, I would have changed Vincent's surname. I would have called him Vincent Killian
I loved the movie. But I felt the "Starman" song part was too happy. Just a nitpick.
I really never give movies 10/10 so I'm going to give this a 7/10 just for a overall good story and character driven movie. I would of liked a little more back round on Matt Damon's character and I too felt this movie was a tad long.
It's 94% strong on RottenPotatoes
As an Irish person i was completely heartbroken when his potatoes got destroyed
I enjoyed this movie, just saw it last night!! 9/10!! This is my Ridley Scott go-to #1 movie (surpassing The Gladiator). ANYONE tell if I'm wrong, BUT this movie had a bit of an (**SPOILER ALERT**) ex-machina with the whole Chinese NASA secretly/miraculously having a probe I believe for them to orbit with!!? Still a great movie, I understand that it came from the novel but still: REALLY?? CNASA had a secret PROBE!!!!
I was waiting for this ever since i saw this movie 2 weeks ago :D
My favorite movie of the year so far
Just saw the movie. People were saying this movie was better than Cast Away and stuff. Couldn't disagree more. The movie was alright at best. So damn predictable. The film looked absolutely awesome though.
This was a great movie, but i was really surprised when it got a Best Picture nomination
liked it quite a bit, not as much as you guys tho. B+ for The Martian.
Great review guys, but is it just me or the sound and the video didn't sync on 9:40?
How did he manage to use tape to seal that habitat?
I loved this film it had me on the edge of my seat.
childish Gambino did take me out of the movie a little bit..but everything else..AMAZING! YAY SCIENCE!
I don't know, u tell me
Thought it was a very good movie only problems was it was just a little too long. no back story for matt damons character and no follow up on sean beans character
+Gary Ervin
You're one of these that walks out of the cinema as soon as the end music comes on! (£13 to get in! You should stay for every minute!)
Here's what you missed (it's quite a lot!):
Over the first part of the end credits we see what happens to the characters during the launch of Ares V.
Where's Campea?
how long was "the martian" on mars?
It was one scene... It was a body double with a towel over his face.
Am I the only person who didn't think the movie was that great? I'd give it a 7/10.
Yes, you are alone. Both of you!
