As a ballroom dancer, i find this really funny yet so informative at the same time. It may not be the best and detailed dancing tutorial on youtube but if you're never dancing before, well this is for you.
Ouh this is a great explanation of basics - great job :) Square dancing is nice - stance is super important! :) haha breath freshener always helps! Btw if you are looking for a nice couple dancing - check out kizomba.. it's a social dance with far more expression than ballroom dancing - ballroom dancing is more based on choreo, where kizomba is all about the social aspects - like salsa / bachata :) Check out this video about Social Dancing 101 on kizomba though, but some tips will apply to any social dance - th-cam.com/video/k73g1wH1uew/w-d-xo.html
I did ballroom dancing last school year and my dance teacher didnt do masking tape and during all classes wē learned the Same things then when wē had to show our parents my teach counted all the steps, said then aloud, and would do it with us. I was kind of disappointed that she chose my best friend for the compition but was proud that my bestie had fun and i had fun doing it infront of our parents and some siblings. I miss it and Plan on doing more classes in the summer or whenever Because it was fun and i loved it!
I really want to do this with a real man so bad, because I have fantasies about mastering simple ballroom dancing with the actors from Harry Potter for some dance scenes in the movies about my made up good/evil half-blood witch character, Hope Estrella Feelgood-Potter-Malfoy-Riddle. 👍🏻 if you understand my pain of being lonely and isolated. I'm very afraid to dance in front of a huge audience with a man. Stage fright won't end, either.
Definitely not true! Find a studio that teaches social ballroom dance in your location. Be brave and go for it. Changed my life after I became a widow 4 years ago.
It is now -- in Oregon dance venues -- totally normal to see a man following a female lead. Even in classes with rotations: men are having to learn to lead another man who wishes to learn to follow. This is progress, this is freedom with respect.
yeah no eye contact. i'm a ballroom dancer please don't look into your partners eyes guys look at their left hand where women look at their left wrist. you can have eye contact if you are doing social ballroom dance but with ballroom dance no.
Howcast: But damnit, you still need to learn how to ballroom dance! Me: 😂🤣 Just like what I need to do before my formal dance coming up on April 28, 2018 and it’s already April 15, 2018!
I have a job interview for a ballroom dance instructor (no experience needed but I wanna be ahead of the game anyways) and this was so fun and helpful lol
Haha sounds like you love to dance as much as me :) check out the link youdance.com/3 it’s an online dance platform that I have just recently started and it’s SO COOL! I’ve learned so much as far as skill. The teachers are pros and teach all types of dance from beginner to pro. They also teach BALLROOM! So lots of tutorials for you :)
Okaaaayyyy...3 things: 1) The follower's hand doesn't touch the shoulder. The whole hand is roughly halfway done the upper arm. 2) Where is the body contact? 3) THAT BOX IS TOO SMALL!
There is no body contact, that would make the dance clunky and awkward. I say this as someone who doesn't know anything but what I read in a free book I found on Google from the 1800's so that this with a grain of salt
I've never danced before but it is my dream to do this one day with the most beautiful girl and fine classical music playing in the background. So here I am learning just incase
I think this would be more helpful for people wanting to learn to dance, if they had hired actual dancers for the video. When they say for the lady to put her hand on the man's shoulder, reaching for his shirt seam... please don't. The gentleman needs to hold a nice topline, and having the lady's hand directly on top of his shoulder will hinder that. Instead, shape your left hand like an L, with your thumb held away from your other fingers. Put your hand on his upper arm, with your thumb on your side, and your fingers on the other side of the bicep (closer to his back). Don't squeeze his arm, but just apply a very light pressure so you have contact and your hand won't accidentally slip. Not all ballroom dancing is done with the same hold- for example tango is different (the lady's hand goes slightly under the gent's arm) and if you are learning New Vogue then there is a whole different set of arm movements to learn for each dance. My suggestion to anyone wanting to learn dancing, is go to a Dancesport studio and learn from professionals. No amount of youtube videos can replace having a lesson with a qualified instructor.
Isabella Marks no one is watching this basic 3 minute video on how to master the dance. people like me just want to watch it for the basics to be able to have some steps to use when we go dance in a place out of our element. or maybe we're just watching to get the basic idea before taking lessons. thanks for the details, but you should write a blog or something or make your own videos so that people who know the basics can adjust to your advice accordingly. most of the people coming here probably have no idea what you're talking about until they've actually danced a few times.
starogre Basic hold is not "mastering" the dance. It is the first thing a dancer learns and is one of the most important aspects of ballroom. If you don't have contact with your partner's body in the correct way, then you won't be able to communicate properly. After all, how do you think the gentleman leads the lady? He doesn't whisper steps into her ear- she has to feel him leading. It's not possible for that to happen if she is clinging to his shoulder and impeding his movement. If you just want to learn some basic steps, try a free beginners class at a studio. Videos like this one do not support you to develop good foundation skills, and are likely to teach you bad habits.
Isabella Marks I totally get what you're saying! From my point of view I watched this video to get an idea of what the basic steps were so that when I ask a friend who actually has been doing it for 10 years competitively teaches me, I'll already have an 'idea' of what it is. But hey, at least this video sparked interest and discussion in the comments enough that whoever is actually trying to learn the dance as a beginner can get some different ways to try it or different points of view and opinions, if how they're doing it isn't working correctly!
I’m trying to learn this so I can write my two favorite characters dancing together!!!! Just trying to figure out which hand is the right hand and which hand is left haha
Ok firstly I love her facial expression at 0:15 😩. Now is Grace Jones song Victor Should’ve been a Jazz music ballroom dance music? I love this song and want to dance to it
Starting with reverse turns is evil. If you do the box the other way round (right foot forwards, left foot back) it's easier. You will then turn clockwise in step 13, which is way easier.
