She’s wearing a full circle skirt and so it flows a lot better then the others skirts. The fabric is thinner aswell and so it spreads out more when you twirl.

@@arivera857 Ah, but 'tis in practice that one gains coordination! That is how all people start. If this type of dancing were still incorporated into our culture/society, we would likely have learned the steps in our childhood.
I'm from Germany and my school offered dancing courses for everyone to join before prom :-) There was no big performance as it wasn't mandatory but still great that night! Also these balls are still a very, very, very important and big thing in Vienna! I was there last year for my semester abroad and balls where advertised everywhere. Unfortunately I could not go to one because of Finals but when Covid is over and I refreshed my dancing skills a bit, I really want to go with my boyfriend 😊
Actually, it was the 19th century (before that, there was no waltz), and dancing wasn't quite as formal in Vienna - people held on to each other pretty tightly. Add to that the prominence of VERY low-cut dresses in the fashion of the time, and you get an idea of why it was considered so scandalous. ;)
y‘all need to study in vienna. all of the universities have an anual ball just like this one. from december to february there are balls every weekend and if you‘re a university student the entry tickets are quite affordable (around 30€/35$)
I love how they sync up and its so pretty how the dresses spin and how their circle of dancers just move so beautiful and awesome!Their movements are the best!
the girl who's dress twirled so beautifully stole the show for me with her dress. i loved it so much, it was just so perfect in my eyes on how it moved as she spun. i'm not a fan of limp dresses that barely move when the wearer is being spun, so she definitely caught my eye.
I'm afraid I couldn't keep my eyes off the 2 girls dresses that looked too tight for the crinolin or hoop skirt. Honestly a little static guard please.
They deserve every second and every clap of every hand in that audience. That beautiful performance required a lot of practice and discipline from these young people. And they delivered!!
just a name yeah, but it’s sad that they aren’t common anymore. Because now it would be everyone dancing instead of just wealthy people. And to be honest, dancing now a days is kind of unimpressive when all they do is dance sexually I don’t mean to be rash or anything, but the way people dance now just makes me sad tbh
Before I entered highschool, I really thought proms are like this so my standards are so damn high. Even now that I'm at highschool and waiting for prom to happen, I still dream it'll be like this ballroom dance.

My sister or brother had one in collège (french grades not american) but it wasn't at 18 and i think they could bring alcohol, but i think even before covid they stopped. But tbh i don't see a prom in any french school, they're just not as pretty.
+Dua Zainab you're right, there was no ONE specific time, but various times throughout history societies had spikes of demand for yes, lavish clothing, furniture etc, and attending venues such as balls -.-, think before you type and be a buzzkill
+Dua Zainab ..... I never said everyone attended balls though? I'm fully aware that not everyone was able to participate, but that's my point! Balls back then were extremely lavish for that very reason, I highly doubt balls of today have got anything on what balls were like back then XD
This already feels like a fantasy, but it feel MORE impactful when you haven’t seen a hall full of people like that in more than a year, and a full on human contact generally.
Why can't we have more of this in every big city in the Western world? I'd like to both watch it with different dresses each time and dance in it with all the practice that it takes. It's a beautiful way to exercise.
As a classical musician who's not from Vienna, I've always been somewhat detached when playing waltzes - as though my interpretation was lacking even though I knew it was a dance. It's only now by seeing how the dancers twirl around and the skirts swish about and the gracefulness of their steps did I fully understand how waltzes really are..so thank you very much for this. It was an eye opener and a learning experience.
pam11as We do still do this in society, what on Earth are you talking about? It is a regular accurance. No dance, no tutors, no horses to ride. Mama and papa would say we had lost any sanity we had. My sisters would say that I had officially lost myself in a make believe world and my brothers I daren't even imagine what they would say.
Where I live (Southern Germany, near Austria), we have lots of those events. Tbh, I love reading the comments by amazed & envious Americans... they make me feel less "cut off" from the rest of the world here in Europe 😂😂 It's like "see, we have cool things here, too" lmao
As an American, I have absolutely no idea why we’ve abandoned this kind of dancing for things like tWErKINg and other overly sexualized club dancing. No way in hell you’re ever going to get me to twerk, but if someone wanted to teach how to THIS, I’d be there in a heartbeat.
Mexican culture does something similar, but it's when a girl turns 15 (or 16 sometimes), but it's nowhere near as complicated as this. We usually have a few short waltzes with the family and friends, a mariachi (band) plays, and the rest is party music 🔊
@@rainbowstorm6142 A quinceañera, quince for short is a Hispanic tradition. Basically when a girl turns 15, the family throws a big party for the girl. It’s called a quinceañera because it means 15 year old girl. My quince is coming up and I gotta get ready for my waltz
No, they are not professionals. They are advanced beginners or intermediates. The alignment, posture, lines, & movement of professionals is dramatically different. So you do not have to be a professional dancer to look good.....& have a great time!
But their formations were pretty good. I’m honestly baffled how they managed to learn an 8 minute routine without learning anything about body contact or other ballroom technique.
Words can't express how badly i want to do this. Like just once in my life i want to ballroom dance, but like in historically accurate dresses and shit. Like i want to experience the whole thing, just once and i would be happy. Better yet a masquerade themed ball.
The place for you to go to is Vienna. The most famous ball is the Opernball at the Vienna opera house. It is a classical debutante ball where the young ladies of society are presented. It is quite expensive to go tho' and a terrible crush. But there are loads and loads of balls during the season (from Christmas to Ash Wednesday).
Here in Austria (where I live at least) it's basically a rule for any 15/16 year old girl and boy to attend a dancing school where you learn to dance things like many versions of waltz and also many more different classical dances. When you went there for a few months and the ball season starts. Every boy and girl searches for a dance partner with whom he or she continues dancing together and sign up for ball "eröffnungen" (the first dance, like the one in the video), where they learn the choreography together with all other "couples", til they day of the ball they trained for. I loved my time at the balls as a teenager, it was always so romantic. I had my first kiss on one and me and my girlfriend had the best time dancing together in super fancy clothes with gloves and sometimes she even got to wore a little crystal crown.
@hi same. We all need to throw a giant party in every country that wants to participate after COVID goes bye-bye and dance like this. Imagine all the pretty gowns and dapper suits and the music...ahh.. this is why I'm doing this at my wedding...either that or I'm traveling to a country where this is common. 🥺
A beautiful European culture... Keep it up. In Asia, and Eastern cultures people keep their dances alive.. So great the Europeans are doing the same. I love your classical music and symphonies too.
I'm a man, 25 years old, i love this music so much and this is one of the things that i wanted to do in my entire life. And it makes me cry, it's so beautiful and i'm so sensitive.

As a 20 year old, I know I am in the minority of my age bracket when I say this...But here goes. There is no form of dancing that is more romantic and more appealing than the Viennese waltz. After going to a salute to Vienna concert in Vancouver where they had ballroom dancers dancing to Strauss Waltzes and Polkas, I was captivated by every move and close embrace. The way the pairs move together are simply beautiful, and the formal wear they are required to wear is elegant and classy. I would rather watch one Viennese waltz rather than 10,000 videos of modern “dancing” which I think is spit in the face of true beautiful dancing like this. May the Viennese waltz live long and be celebrated for many centuries to come!
Then take up ballroom dance, I can't tell your gender, but just Google it. As a male in my generation, dance was always seen as effeminate, and I could just cry now that I never pursued it.
People like you are so annoying. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you get to take a giant dump on it. Modern dance styles are just as good as the classics. They are just a different form of expression in dance. There is absolutely no reason to bash it. All you had to say was that you like more classic styles of dance. All this pretentious BS doesn't make you seem refined or cultured. It just makes you look daft. If you actually enjoyed dancing as an artform you'd recognize that all forms of dance should be celebrated and that they require a lot of skill to be executed well.
as a dancer. i have to agree that it is one of the most romantic styles of dances. but please dont be so rude about other dance styles. There is no true dancing. That is a concept that has come out of centuries of slavery and imperialism. Just like waltz, every style also has history and story behind it. Many modern dance forms have a foothold in empowerment and taking back power and a way of expression as a lot originated in minority communities where such styles end up being one of the few ways to express yourself. Coming from a purely dancers perspective, doing various styles really allows different emotions to come out when it is your way of self expression. So please, while you are entitled to your opinion, try not to drag other styles to make yours seem better. Have a great day!
Everybody talking about how sweet it is dancing with your crush when there's me and my class enemy stepping on each other's foot and laughing at each other while trying to keep a straight face and dancing altogether 😭
Awsome!!! I think that children of today don't have the grace and elegance of the dancers have that are in this video. However I think that we need to step back in time and teach them elegance, Grace and Dignity that my Mother and your Mother instilled in her children!!!! This is what we should be doing Instead of handing them the remote to a T.V., game or just plainly just do whatever it take's to get them to do something other than whatever it take's to get them to be invisible to parent's!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
+Annette Celia Rosemary - There are ballroom dance clubs all over the US and many of them put on functions similar to this, in big dance halls with the costumes and everything.
I learned ballroom dance at Stanford University back in the 80s. Watching this video makes me homesick for it! I'm so glad they now have this formal event! P.S. I didn't formally attend Stanford. They offered non unit classes to the community, which I took.
As a participant of few Ball i adore this event. It is so magical and inspiring. The backstage of every dance are few months of repetitions. But the result - the magic of the dance.
The formation was very Beautiful!!! My 10yo grand-daughter enjoyed watching this with me and said that they ALL looked like that they're princesses!!! Congrats on a job well done!!!
I noticed one young lady in a white dress sitting by herself after the dance started. I felt terribly sorry for her? Why was she not dancing? Did she sprain her ankle 5 minutes before the ball? Or did her partner not show up? How awful to be all dressed up and sitting there watching the other young women dance.
There are always alternates for each dance in case something goes wrong. Sometimes they are needed to dance (it happens more often than you may think), and sometimes if everyone stays healthy, they have to sit out as you observed. But the opening committee also dances a polka, and the alternate couples for the waltz always get a chance to perform the polka (and vice versa).
I'm imagining the most intense moment between our two main characters, and how Waltz was the most intimate dance of the regency HRs. How they felt the most of the tension unrivalling between their bodies, the gentle swish of her gown against his breeches, the subtle brush of her bosom against his chest when they spinned, their hands clasped, feet moving in harmony while staring intensely into each other's eyes, his hands firmly gripping her waist. Indulged in one of the finest conversation while they fall slowly for each other. It seems like in every HR I've read, if the heroine is trying to evade the hero, or they both are avoiding it for some reasons, the luck would have it that they both would get waltz as their first dance. Because it involves the most physical touch according to books. How romantic. Sighs.
@@makatsue4598Well, these people are definitely not wearing regency dress lol. And the waltz wasn’t actually popular during the regency period.
And that was considered grinding back in the 18th century.
Lol i'd say it was more accepted than grinding
Actually, it was the 19th century (before that, there was no waltz), and dancing wasn't quite as formal in Vienna - people held on to each other pretty tightly. Add to that the prominence of VERY low-cut dresses in the fashion of the time, and you get an idea of why it was considered so scandalous. ;)

I want to take waltz I don't care if no one dances it in this time but its so classy
@@shalom5978 Dude. Say that again, but slowly.
as a dancer. i have to agree that it is one of the most romantic styles of dances. but please dont be so rude about other dance styles.

Nah her partner was there right next to her, so I wondered why they couldn't dance.
I assume that they were extras just in case something went wrong, because there were already 16 couples on the floor.

It didn’t become popular until later in the 19th century.
