Very well done! Teaching is difficult and you have done a wonderful job of making this clean and not stressful to understand! Counts are clear, movements are clear! I get lost with too much over explaining in other instructional videos! ❤

Excellent instruction video without inundating your students with over-explanation (paralysis through analysis). I love how you've provided two views for every movement. Nice job!

i suggest the the leader change steps rather than the follower in shadow position. Why? Let the leader lead, and the follower just follow. The leader knows what is about to happen and the follower, especially if unfamiliar, will not know.

If you were dancing a waltz back in the 19th century like this, is there a set order everyone knows for these steps? If not, how does the man lead in a way that the lady knows what steps they're about to do?

Hey, Casey! There isn't one set order of steps, and while you can make a routine if you want, social waltz is generally danced lead and follow. This means the gentleman chooses the order of the steps, and they lead each step in a specific way so the lady can follow. We'll have to make some videos explaining the leads for these steps, but in the meantime, you can figure out a system that works for you by practicing with a partner and getting or giving feedback on which leads make sense!

The leader uses certain arm movements to cue which way the follower is about to move. A good follower always has their arms fairly rigid, so they can be "steered.". I, as a follower, think of myself as a push cart, and my arms are the handles. You can't steer a push cart if its handles are floppy and loose like ropes! As for my feet, as long as I'm lifting and lowering them in time to the music, I don't have to think about whether to step forward, backward, or sideways, because my leader will steer me. It's actually really fun and mentally relaxing to be the follower; you don't have to think about the moves at all!

Thank you for this video. I like to see the steps in motion over just a demonstration of what or how to do them. Some the names are different from what I learned them as but that is no big deal. I always felt, and still do, that any change of footwork / syncopation, should be the responsibility and done by the leader. I will again say thank you for this useful and informative video.
