Baritone guitars are the secret weapon for many of today‘s down-tuned players, capable of big and beefier lower tunings without any of the flab or mud that can occur on standard instruments. In this video, Sweetwater‘s Mitch Gallagher sits down to discuss everything that makes baritone guitars so unique, from extra-long scale lengths to heavier-gauge strings and so much more. Check it out!

I like this guy, Sweetwater. Make more videos with him.
Thanks, Barrett! We'll think about it... 😉
I second that
Yes pleaaase
Sooo… just make more videos
Yup
That 12 string acoustic is incredible!😍
Yeah it is. There's no telling how much it is!
Holy cow! Sounds FANTASTIC!!
Yooo what is that thing???
OH MY GOD that Martin 12-string sounds otherworldly! I literally have goosebumps!
I will say this for the bari, it is a smoother transition foe those plating a traditional guitar than moving to a 7-string or other extended range instrument. At least as far as the number of strings is concerned, but getting used to the longer scale can bring its own challenges as the frets are wider spaced. There are trade offs in any respect, but these can lead to some amazing ideas as a result.
I guess I'm weird because for some reason I transitioned better on a 7 string than a baritone, although my end goal (and kinda still is) owning a decent baritone.
I have smaller hands, so a compound radius neck on my 26.5 in jackson js-22 7 felt natural than a big ass straight 27 in. with thick strings. Quite an anomaly lol
I am so impressed with your video. I had no idea about this type of guitar and its importance. The Martin 12 sounds absolutely incredible. I'm glad you shared that with us. Thank you!
Great job explaining the “why,” too. Most folks skip that part.
Thanks for this!
I remember when Mike Mushok from staind was playing a baritone. He was 20 years ahead of the market
I agree
Mike's awesome
Huh?...Wdym ahead?
@@zitosonic i mean the opposite of behind. Pretty sure
Baritone guitars were around way before he was, that’s funny
@@tommilitello198 Yeah but they were not nearly as common, or as popular in the broader scene, you either went down tuned standard 6 or went and got a 7 string for that super low stuff,
Nobody is saying he invented the baritone, but find another rock/metal player before him that played one, not to mention having a signature guitar thats a baritone,
Another great review & explanation!! Thanks.
A baritone 12-string acoustic? Now that’s cool. I want one of those. 😲
Thank you, explained allot and answerd most of my questions
Love that 12 string acoustic baritone. Sounds really nice
I’ve wanted to build a baritone Jazzmaster for ages. This really pushed me over. Just bought a neck!
Thanks Mitch. I wanted to understand these baritone guitars and now I have a basic idea. I think your Martin 12 baritone is brilliant. I’d love to write and record with that!
Very good video! Thank you!
Just got my PRS 277 from you guys, definitely worth the wait!
I have the descent w (the one he's playing) with humcutters in medieval red. It's freaking incredible. That middle position, mmmm yes. Reverend cares about all the little details. Almost every little thing is what i would prefer and/or goes a little further in making it the best it can be.
Very informative. Thanks!
I play my Les Paul in C-standard. I just make sure to use .011's instead of .009's. There are several companies that make guitar strings especially for the purpose, too.
Just bought a Solar baritone e type. It is really nice tuned to b standard super comfortable stays in tune really well. Lots of fun to play.
astounding upload Sweetwater. I broke the thumbs up on your video. Always keep up the superior work.
I went through my whole life, until this day, without knowing baritone guitar was a thing that exists.
I've been tuning all my guitars down for ages. I almost never play E standard if I can help it. But I never knew about this.
.. I wish I had known before buying my last guitar. I am intrigued by this. Especially after hearing the 12 string.. I think I know what I will be looking for next time.
Man, I'm with you. I've been playing for 20 years. Just last week I said to the guy at Guitar Center" I wish I could buy a guitar I could tune to B, but throw a capo on and be back in 22 fret E. " He looked at me like I was special, and says" yeah, since the 1860s, that's been called a Baritone guitar. " I've got some homework to do.
This is cool to watch. Like the sound on that.
Love those Baritone Electrics!
Never owned one but loved those Taylor 8 string baritones.
Man, that acoustic sounds amazing!
Was hoping to hear you play more
Would be helpful to have a companion review of capo's to put on the baritone's
that's gotta be a baritone that they use in "Settle for a Slowdown" by Dierks Bentley, both in the intro and the end of the choruses....I'd bet my life on it. Love that song.
I have had a custom guitar made tuned in C for QOTSA and Kyuss. May have to add a baritone to my bucket list...
Did you get one yet? 😁
I live in Drop A. Although I also have a Squier Classic Vibe Bass VI tuned to Drop E, which is SO MUCH FUN.
Great video
i’ve been really inspired by deftones and chevelle and i could never figure out how they got such unique guitar tones considering i just have a regular 6 string. but i SERIOUSLY need to invest in a baritone knowing that those types of artists use them. it makes so much more sense
I learned of Baritone Guitars bc it was used in Phoebe Bridgers' track off Punisher called Halloween. Never heard anything like it, beautiful sound. Would LOVE to purchase a Baritone in the future to add to my guitar collection
love ur pfp
thats funny because im here because of pheobe as well, although because i want to play i know the end
this guys got a great voice. do more videos with him!
Fascinating!
Martins never cease to amaze me.
perfect vid
Ages ago I tuned my Washburn W240 down a full tone, then later two, and finally two and a half (5 frets).
At that point I decided it wouldn't sound good if I took the idea any farther.
I have not had much impetus to tune it back up.
Robert Smith (The Cure) is well known for using a Fender Bass VI. I don't know anything about him using a baritone guitar. What I have discovered is, instruments tuned B - B are baritone guitars and instruments tuned down one octave from standard guitar E - E are called basses. (extended range)
this is awesome
Warm jazz tone on that jam. Wooh never considered getting a acoustic 13 string. Baritone. . . nice nice nice
love DROP B TUNE
trying to always use Drop A for my Doom metal music
but lots of time not sure if i should just stay on Drop B just to be a bit less too muddy ?
I wish I could get one of those Martins
Love this guy
This guy makes it easy to listen
I almost exclusively play baritone and it is FUN.
I want one of these so damn bad
That 12 string sounds incredible
Very helpful. So a standard open C chord can be fretted exactly the same with this or would all new chord shapes need to be learnt?
Hi, Jake! Thanks for your question.
The chord shapes from a standard tuned guitar absolutely translate if the same intervals are the same from string to string. However since the guitar is tuned lower, a first position C shape for example is not going to sound out as a "C".

That Martin Baritone 12-string is pure evil.
I gotta have one!
Agreed 👍
what a beautiful guitar
Don't get me wrong... The Rev sounded great, but that acoustic sounded incredible!
Ugh! Why did you have to make me want yet another expensive guitar?! Would really love to hear more of that 12 string.
Is it possible to use heavier, high tentension strings on a normal acoustic to tune it to baritone tuning?
That acoustic baritone guitar sounds awesome…
These guitars are awesome 🤘🏿😈🤘🏿!!The 12 string acoustic guitar is stunning!🤘🏿😈🤓🤘🏿
Can anyone tell me what the exact name of the electric guitar used in this video is?
What about using baritone guitar tuning with a standard guitar using a 12 56 gauge string
Imagine Mitch busting out Illusion of Strength on the Martin.
Tuning to standard E is that ok with Baritone?
Looking purely at a low/heavy sound, how would a short-scale tenor-tuned bass compare to a baritone guitar?
Mike Kerr from Royal Blood uses short-scale 4 string basses for his sound. Only problem i would think you would run into is getting bass pickups to sound good under lots of gain. A bit of EQ'ing should do the trick though.
I’m considering getting one of these these things to just leave it in C standard for all my queens of the Stone Age playing
"12-string acoustic baritone guitar" might be the coolest phrase I have heard in a looong time 😅
Tune to A, it's just better. I play that acoustic bari from Alavarez. It's the best cheap guitar I've ever owned. For a fingerstyle player, it's just perfect
That 12 string sounds insane
Jim Belushi here teaching me about baritone guitars
Really great video. Explained really well. But down a half step or drop D flat is good enough for. I also love E standard. So, as I figured, baritone guitars aren't for me.
Please model this guitar?
I got more baritones than regular guitars, and the regulars are tuned down. We wanna make the ground quake, and have a 37" scale contra bass holding down those ulta subs like a piano
what is the name of the song playing?
2:43 A Change of Season
Hi can you tell me what make is the black strat youre playing please,i like the shape.Thanks.
Hi, Giovanni - Mitch is playing this Reverend Baritone, if that’s what you’re referring to:

@@sweetwater Yes that's the one beautiful looking guitar Many Thanks.
That was the intro if Jeremy, whit the acoustic baritone..
I really want a baritone gibson explorer
Thank you 🤘🏿😈🤓🤘🏿
Wait is there a drum beat in the background that he doesn't hear?
*Baritone Obsessed*
The Cure actually played a Bass VI, I think.
Do we use a regular guitar amp with these? No blown speakers?
Hi and thanks for your message! Baritone guitars have a longer scale length (27-30") compared to traditional (24.75-25.5") and lower tunings, generally a fifth lower. Sometimes an octave, think Fender VI. Either guitar or bass amps work for these instruments, it's really all about the end result sound you're interested in obtaining.

Sick 12 string!
Which reverend is this one with a trem on it??
That’s the Reverend Descent W baritone guitar. It’s super cool!
Mitch
1:58 song please
That 12 string is amazing. Why do I have to know this exists. 😢
Like one of the best instruments to have in your arsenal
I now need a 12 string baritone..
If I were you I'd change that 26p to a 27w as it'll intonate better
“So I switched over to my Martin Baritone 12 string” weird flex but ok 😳
😂
Can I tune a Baritone to D?
Why are 12-string baritones so hard to come by?? I want an acoustic and have hardly heard of/seen any.
I like Reverends quality but the 1,000 price point on the majority of their guitars is just a little North of my budget.
The Baritone Guitar Strings are thicker
yup
Nice Martin can I have it?
He kinda looks like Paul Allen from the Mn Vikings radio network
That 12 string ... sheesh
Why don’t they make 26 inch scale you could use any tuneing
Cool - is the 12-string made in Mexico?
Thanks for watching! No, it was a limited-run model, a Pete Seeger Custom Edition made to celebrate Sing Out! Magazine's 60th anniversary back in 2010. It was one of 60 made in Martin’s Nazareth, PA, location.
Hope this helps,
Mitch
It seems curl to show the Martin baritone, because I want a 12 string acoustic baritone now. :-)
"You can even tune down to A"
Loathe playing in drop E on a 6 string baritone: Pathetic
That 12 string though...
