When my dad (a legendary bassist) was teaching me fretless, I wanted to practice slides. But he kept telling me that fewer glissando makes them "special". I totally agree… I mean if you want to do a little vibrato or some thing. It’s already going to have a distinctive tone without doing those glissandos all the time. I think they get a little tiring to listen to. Less is more.

i knew a guy (sadly passed away from cancer aged 31) who never called himself a luthier though the guitars he made were simply stunning. He only made them for himself and all of them were fretless. Every single one sounded beautiful, almost etherial, just incredible guitars. He was an awesome musician too. (All 52 guitars are now safely displayed & used by his family members and six God children) RIP Davey.
As both a guitarist and double bass player this is so cool to me. This baritone, violin shape inspired fretless guitar is as if a double bass and guitar had a child.
Poland seriously has the best luthiers around these days... Stradi, Mensinger, Mayones, Maruszczyk, and I might be forgetting a few... Beautiful instruments!
I've been looking at fretless guitars for a while now, and though I can't afford any new gear I want one SO bad. And seeing this baritone makes me want one even more -- it's like making a guitar sing, a style of playing I want to experiment with and learn (being mainly a vocalist, this seems very fun). I hope I can afford something similar someday soon, even if it's just a de-fretted, cheaper instrument, haha. Nice video! Love this!
I've always wanted a bass from Stradi, cool that this is an option now! Their work is ALWAYS impeccable, and they get some of the best fretless tones in the industry imo.
It is my dream to play a stradi bass. They sound incredible. Thanks for sharing this guitar! Hands down the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever seen or heard.
Wow, I think the lower register -- which not only has the pitches closer together in terms of absolute frequency difference, but is also more forgiving of minor pitchiness -- is really great paired with a fretless instrument! Definitely seems more accommodating to improvisation
That is possibly the most beautiful fretless baritone guitar I've seen. Jokes aside, it indeed is one of the most beautiful instruments I've seen. I'm in love with the cello and the double bass, and this guitar looks amazing with those aesthetics.
35 years ago everybody said I'm a freak because I built myself a baritone fretless from an old Kramer alu shortscale bass-neck (ex duke-bass) and diy body. Result is quite satisfying because of the alu-neck. The more tight the neck the more you get sustain and a bright sound, and thats important for the plain strings which are a bit muted by the fingertip. Nice to see that the good ideas will not die...
recently had a guitar of mine professionally defretted, and i'm not sure i'll ever be able to go back. sure, chords are harder and the sustain is a bit garbage (at least on a regular guitar, baritones might fare better in that regard), but the gain in expression and access to any microtone imaginable make it absolutely worth it in my book. currently considering getting a custom made one, just to seal the deal. in any case welcome to the fretless guitar gang !
Vigier make fretless guitars with aluminum fretboards that help with the sustain. Guthrie Govan, Gabriel Marin and Bumblefoot use those. I'd buy one of those if I had 2500 bucks :/
@@arumyn3070 sure ! although i'd have to try one out before blowing that much money on an instrument. the metal fingerboard probably helps a bit, but to my understanding, the lack of sustain is mostly caused by the softness of the fingertips, so i'm not really convinced yet
I think you made excellent choices. This guitar honestly sounds like an extremely fun guitar with so many versatile options. As soon as you said you put piezo on it to. I was like man that is fantastic. You didn't show us but assume you can blend with regular pickups as well. Giving a vast amount of beautiful cleans
Oh damn I love Marty swartz I didn't know you guys knew each other. I learned so much from Marty when I first started playing around 2006-2008. I've probably learned more from him than anyone, even my pops. Hats off to both of you, sounds like a fun time you have planned in October. Sweet guitar as well!
I would pay $16 for a CD, Cassette, Flac, MP3, whatever. To hear a whole album of you playing that kind of music at 1:26. Just a chill, new agey album to relax too.
I saw this at NAMM and fell in love with it! Totally amazing instrument and yes, it did steal the show for me. Congratulations, the luthier told me it was a custom order one off - So glad you received it and great to hear it. Enjoy! I want one!
I come back and watch this video at least once every couple of months just because I want to hear / see that guitar again. You should make more videos with it
I made myself a fretless acoustic baritone a few years ago by riping the frets out of a Kent guitar and filling them with wood putty, then applying about 30 layers of Japanese lacquer and sanding with 600, 1200 and 2400 grit in between. It sounds amazing. Impossible to play chords on though
I designed and built a violin-guitar hybrid in 1988 and I copied things I'd seen on TV from the 60's so its nothing new but this is a great combination of the right things! I too ripped frets out of a strat in 1985 and the sustain was non-existent! LMAO Wow, what a learning experience that was. I'm fairly poor but have a lot of tools and mahogany so I'll definitely make a copy of this for myself. Thanks for turning my head just when I thought I'd seen it all! :o)
wishfield is a great fretless band, and i remember being suggested buzz gravelle's "proof of existence" a while ago, both worth listening to. fretless guitar has a lot of potential with "big and long bending", that's what i like about it at least. very cool stuff sammy g thank you
That's the coolest thing I've ever seen, and although I'm far too poor to ever even hold one of those, I'd absolutely LOVE to play it at least one time! Thanks for sharing, Sammy G!!!
What a warm and inspiring sound, it does hug you in a way. Playing chords isn't just the multiple intonation, but also pressing down all fingers well enough to get a clear sound without buzz or being muffled which is sometimes hard enough already on a fretted neck.
You should try the "guitarra baiana". It's a 5-string guitar invented in Bahia (Brazil) in parallel to the electric guitar. It was originally called "electric rod" and later developed based on the famous electric guitars, adopting a different body shape and other improvements added to its more famous cousin. Up to this day, it's quite common in one or two music genres and it looks hella cute.
Heh heh, you're on the slippery slope to become a fretless Jazz bassist. The first hit is free and then next thing you know you've got a custom 6 string on order... it's an epidemic I tell ya.
It's unique and sounds pretty good. For my taste, I would prefer more of a baritone hybrid. Say maybe C# standard tuning It's definitely beautiful but that upper bout is too much. I like to get my thumb around the neck

But the coolest thing was being able to run it through my rig and just getting some really cool sounds. Thank you for posting your amazing video.
Beautiful instrument and sounds awesome. I play fretless bass, (Probably for more years than you have been alive). Love the sound and freedom of a fretless instrument.
From the very first moment I saw the thumbnail, my first reaction was "is he playing a Cello"? It takes skill to hit the right point on the strings, but I notice they include more inlays on the fretboard to help with referencing where the frets would typically be. And. That guitar looks BEAUTIFUL.
I love baritone guitars. My current favourite player is Mark Lettieri, although he plays fretted ones. Something to have fun with is hitting a harmonic and sliding it. Jeff Berlin, a bass player from long ago did this and it was really entertaining.
I love the sound of the baritone guitar! I’ve loved it every time I’ve seen it before, I just never knew what it was! Now I know. Thanks! Oh and yes, that’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen!
I picked up the violin again this year after almost 20 years, and I found it incredibly hard after almost 20 years of playing guitar! Frets really are cheat codes for stringed instruments 😂 Good job on getting a lovely sound on this stunning guitar!
A great benefit of any fretless instrument is it becomes easier to correct for the tuning issues in 12-tone equal temperament. There are also tuning issues with the standard fretted guitar (which can be solved with warped frets, called "true temperament" guitars) that this can help overcome too. Of course, it takes a lot of skill.
