From old school surf music, all the way through to modern heavy metal, the Baritone Guitar shows up throughout! In essence a Baritone guitar is a guitar with a longer scale length (neck) to accommodate the tension of thicker strings, which allows you to tune to a lower pitch! traditionally Baritone guitars are tuned B to B, but care used quite often in A standard or C standard tuning!
The baritone guitar is often used by musicians of all stylistic backgrounds looking to replace or augment sounds produced by more conventional instruments or simply to add a new sound that is both familiar and strikingly fresh!

Baritone guitars are just guitars with long necks meant to be tuned to B standard (for those who wont watch the video)
👍🤘
Obviously first thing I thought before watching what else can he tell us?😆
And almost always use thicker strings at the same time. Usually 12-62 or 68. Sometimes 13-68 or 72
Instead of duck duck go i just need this guy😂
What about the extra string.. was extra string on my lads PRS..
Thanks Dagan beginner here at 61 years of age all your videos are a wealth of information Gray from Grants Pass Oregon USA
I’ve learned so much about guitar because of you! Thanks for all the great content!
Any time! 🤘
I was thinking about getting a baritone for the longest time, but decided against it. Instead I use a pitch shifter that works well all the way down to B standard. So I can learn any song between E and B tuning essentially.
Have recently become quite interested in these guitars, Thanks for another informative vid, Dagan. Cheers!
That was really well explained. Thanks for not getting stuck in a specific genre of music. Having a surfer style of pedal would have been a nice touch but I am in. A baratone is a new must. Thanks for the entertaining lesson and for sharing your enthusiasm for sound.
I watched your video because I recently purchased a PRS 277. It's quite beautiful and I bought it so I could experiment with new sounds. It is an inspiring instrument and I know it will provide years and years of musical pleasure! Nice Job!
This was a super helpful video. I been looking at the Squier Paranormal Cabronita Baritone and trying to decide whether I should be one or not. You make a great case for adding one to my guitar clan. Thanks for your input, you are a trusted channel and host.
Totally add it. I have a DIY version: a walnut and spalted maple tele thinline with P90s that I put 12-56 strings (third wound) on and tuned down to C. I couldn’t go the last half step to B because it’s still 25.5” scale. It fills lots of roles and is ridiculously fun and beautiful, especially with octave fuzz or vibrato.
I'd been wanting to learn more about these. Thanks, Dagan!
Here to help!
Very Cool, Thankyou. Intro Jam just Awesome. Stunning looking and sounding Guitar and Playing. Excellent explanation and demo. Cheers
Dagan !
Don’t change baby, love what u put out here!
I purchased a Gretsch G5260 this past winter,to play some Sludgy/Stoner/CromCore riffs in drop A
Man is it Dirty!Really gets the me in the drone zone….Keep on Keepin on Brother!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Another great example is the guitar solo for Witchita Lineman by Glen Campbell. Absolute classic sound, and one of the greatest songs ever!
That was done on a borrowed Fender Bass VI.
mentioning witchita reminds me of seven nation army
WOW ! really great explanation of not only purpose of baritone guitar but how it works technically that i can understand, even with the accent. thanks
Dagen is such a great dude. He quickly became my favorite guitar guy on TH-cam! PMTVUK, I hope y’all never get rid of him!
Gr8 as usual, thx.
dagan is the man who convinced me to get the jackson rhoads js32t, gotta love dagan!
🤘🤘🤘
I went to a shop to buy a baritone last year and walked out with a multiscale which I now down tune - feels way less foreign not being so long but still hits the same notes
Thanks Russel Brand
Ive learned so much from you its insane, probably wont read this comment but thank you so much 😊
The viola (mid alto) of guitars tending towards the cello, best match for the human voice.
Great explanation and demo mate. Must get one. Might even be able to fire the bass player? Thanks.
The intro sounds like the Floods outro by Pantera a little bit
The SOAD chords at 1:39😏
😉🤘
everyday i love learning new guitar info from you dagan. you are the fucking best, also just curious if you know berried alive? charles is the reason i picked up a guitar.
Can you replace the stock tuning machine with PRS locking tuners on a baritone guitar?
Great video. Also who came first this guy or Russell brand?
I know you are a big person because i have Ltd Viper 400b. They are larger guitars and this guitar looks proportionally appropriate to your preposterously positive persona.
Dagon, there's a melodic riff floating in my head. It's recent, a clean guitar sound, but just can't place it right now. I highly suspect it's done on a baritone guitar.
Well, I finished building one yesterday and have just set it up. So obviously it's time to figure out exactly what to do with this thing. So far I've been doing Nick Cave and The Cure impressions...
Aerials on a baratone sounds good.
I bought a used baritone guitar and enjoyed it for a little while. When money was needed it was the first to go. It would be fun to have another one. Great explanation Dagan.
I owe you and deep sorry, I will never question you again brother.
Hey there! I like your channel. I have a new Kramer Striker showing up today or tomorrow. Got interested after watching your video on it. Can you click on the closed captioning button though? That would be really great. Thanks
Can a beginner play it? How do coords and notes work with the different tuning?
So are they good for metal, or is it worth it to get heavy string gauges or a 7 or 8 string guitar?
Didn't Eddy Van Halen play a baritone guitar on Spanked on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album?
He did indeed! What a great tune! 🔥
Aerials 🤘🏻
Staind dysfunction best sounding baritone guitar
I'm a huge fan of Mike Mushoks guitar tone. Punchy and well balanced.
Can a 26" scale length tune to standard E A D G B e?
Is that a riff you played at the beginning or just noodling? I like that a lot
The metal riff was aerials
So does this mean a baritone with a higher gauge string can be down tuned even lower for playing meshuggah and other bands like them
Yup most 8 strings are commonly 27 inches anyway just put an 80 as your lowest string for a F# or Drop E
One question: the Baritone tune isn't the used tune by Type O' Negative? Is really amazing darkest tune. Gothical atmosphere.
B Standard
What happens if you tune a regular scale length guitar to
B Standard?
And if a baritone tuned to E Standard?
If you increase the string gauge to 12-56 (wound third) you can tune a Fender 25.5” scale guitar down to C standard. I love mine and got the idea from Madison Cunningham who plays a Jazzmaster in C standard.
E to B very slinky strings
B to E very taught strings
A great example of a baritone guitar "tone" is Chevelle. Always sounds so nasty
6 string basses usually have B-E-A-D-G-C tuning.
Why would you want a baritone? I always describe baritones as a 6-string designed for 7-string or 8-string tuning. If you want to play in the same tuning as a 7 or 8, especially if you play with someone who is playing a 7 or 8, but you ONLY play 6-strings, a baritone is how you do that. To so kindly quote The Bunn, "Baritones are a whole bunch longer for tuning a whole bunch lower."
I have a Squier Classic Vibe Bass VI, and I treat it like a baritone Jaguar. I also have a Vintage Modified Baritone Jazzmaster, and I treat it like a baritone as well. They both are the same 30" scale length, but I use them for Drop E and Drop G.
I also have a PRS SE 277, and they are phenomenal for Drop A. Just make sure to track down a Korean-made, so it is actually playable, right out of the box. (I had to return every Indonesian-made SE I ever bought because they all had broken hardware.)
I want a 7 string baritone. And tune down a atep.
I like baritone ukuleles
this dude is a total rockstar
Aldus snow
Thought you were Russell Brand from the thumbnail
can i use a baritone as a main metal guitar?
1:40 can someone tell me what this song is?😂 cannot remember and i tried very hard i promise. I search for songs by System of a down and Disturb but i think im wrong… maybe pantera?
Found it!! Aerials!
I do NOT understand what he says at 8:40 about fanned guitar...sorry i'm not a native speaker
Easier to play higher strings for soloing
put your baritone in open d tuning.
so a baritone is just a seven string without the high e string
The Met-all 😂 thats how i say it
Oh the drama
Is Dagan slurring his words here?!
I hear System Of a Down
Not a 6-string bass. A 6-string 7-string ;)
It’s funny how baritone guitars look completely normal on you lol
I just farted..smells terrible
Nice move not to paint your fingernails - go on like this.
why?
My nails are painted as I type this. Soz 💅🏻
Men painting their nails is so cringe
does it affect one's ability to play the guitar? no.
if you dont like people painting their nails, dont watch the video
Lol yeah he left it out just for you ya little redneck
