- Watch as ZipHearing customer Nick details his experience with Starkey's newest and best hearing aid, the Starkey Genesis AI 24 RIC R T model. In this review Nick provides a detailed overview of what he considers the strengths and weaknesses of these hearing aids, and some things you may want to consider before buying these hearing aids, or while using them. Overall Nick mentions that he's had a very positive experience with these hearing aids, but does stress the importance of having a good relationship with a local hearing provider who can help you get these devices dialed in to perfection.

I rarely leave comments on videos, but I just had to say that I genuinely appreciate this very considered and thought out review of these hearing aids. Previously I was on the fence about these hearing aids, but now I’ve driven through straight through it lol. Thanks for this sharing this video :)
This is a great review, thanks for putting it together! I got my genesis ai 24 a month ago and watching your review was humbling as it shows how unique each human being is. This is my third Starkey hearing aid, have been using them since 2008, and this one was a game changer to me. I have been resistant to “smart” hearing aids because these usually assume they know what you need, and most times that doesn’t work and I would end up annoyed most of the time. This one though uses the powerful processing to make sure what you need is done the best way possible. It indeed took me more than a couple visits to my hearing specialist to get it to my liking, but that gave me a pleasant experience as I could customize the “smartness” to fit my particular needs. And I agree, they are incredibly light and ergonomic. Sometimes I feel the urge to check if they’re still there hahaha As for the edge mode I’m glad it’s not the default as I don’t quite like it 😂 my needs in an environment usually vary (sometimes I need enhanced noise reduction, sometimes I need enhanced voice recognition) and each time I’d have to go in the app to adjust what edge mode is supposed to focus on, so I setup professional programs that would do that and use them instead. The app is indeed great, considering we already carry a device around (our phones), not having to carry another is awesome. Thanks again for your perspective, it’s great to be able to know what other people are experiencing!
Thank you for the amazing feedback! I am so happy to hear that you were able to figure out the quirks on this model and that you found some solutions! Thanks for sharing!
Great review! Answered a lot of questions and explained features no one else mentioned…I’m getting them and you showed me there’s a lot to like and not many cons! 🎉
Great review. I also have the Genesis AI 24 and agree it took more visits to get them dialed in. The out of the box fitting for me was very “lispie”. It is my understanding the Edge Mode is static from the time you engage it. So as the listening environment changes, the Edge Mode does not continuously adapt or adjust. You would need to “reset” the Edge Mode to the different listening environment. I agree these are much lighter in feel, a fantastic battery life and sweat proof (at least so far I have not had any issues with sweet which I had with with the Starkey Edge 2400’sI had previously). Thank you for the time to put the review together.
Yeah. Wish this review could be updated. The edge mode is 100% a setting for your “current” environment and does not update without user input
@@TomCruz3n Good news! Edge Mode is being updated by the manufacturer to re-survey the environment because many folks were forgetting to disengage the feature when they left that environment. As an audiologist and hearing aid user - I regularly forget to turn off my Edge Mode. With an upcoming release, users can update through the manufacturer software or app to the new Edge Mode version. It is still recommended to *try* to remember to turn it off so that you can go back to your "Personal" program - however...it won't be as big of a deal, now!
Another comprehensive and useful review. Excellent!
Nick, Your review was instrumental in getting me to finally decide on Genesis. Three weeks wearing, I rewatched your video. I agree with all your pluses, with one more plus. I bought mine through Audibel (same price as independent audiologist in NYC) giving users access to a national network of audiologists and a four year warranty. I have called their general customer service number and applaud the quality of support provided. My account is shared with my audiologist and she was aware of the issues I had and how they were resolved. Regarding your cons - what a fair and accurate portrayal. I agree that streaming instrumental music is thin and disappointing, streaming vocal music was okay for my ear. In NYC, there can be static interference on phone calls, both inside and outside. I cannot put the phone in a pocket and chat without interference, I carry it closer to the hearing aids to minimize it. - Excellent presentation!
Excellent review! I have Genesis AI and I love it. You are right about multiple visits but it personalizes it to you . I look at it as learning everything about a new machine.

Great review, I'm very happy with my AI 24 but it did take multiple trips to tune it in correctly.

Awesome video Nick. I have the Genesis AI20. How do I set up Live Listen on my android phone? Thanks.
Hey there! Thank you for the kind words! Unfortunately, I believe live listen is an iPhone function only. There may be some other alternative for android, but i am not quite sure how to make that happen. SUBSCRIBE for more! th-cam.com/users/Ziphearing?sub_confirmaton=1
I had a look but couldn’t see anything about band waves but will try the volume isolation method. Thanks for trying though.
Previously I had made a few changes to my iPhone which included changing the audio to mono so hopefully that’s helping to focus the calls. I’m seeing my Audi today and she’s going to try a few more things with two telephone programs she had added.
Will let you if any improvements.
Thanks
Brilliant review thank you
Great video, Nick. Lots of information and very thorough. I have insurance that will pay up to $5,000 toward new hearing aids as long as I use someone in network. I'm guessing ziphearing is not a network provider, correct?

Just got a pair for 30 day trial. Restaurants sound great, TV i can make out speech, the phone app so far is way too low at full volume. Any ideas on how to get it louder? if not i will send these back. love the day to day sound but phone is terrible i am on an iphone 12.
Try upgrading your phone. Modern technology in the hearing aids need modern technology in the phone to function together. Can’t hurt to try this out.
I’m trialling this H.A 21:38 atm. It’s great. Just one thing though, I find phone calls via the h.a not so clear. Any tips on how to adjust that during the call? My phone is iPhone 11. Thanks
I am trying to remember how to do this on an MFI device, so please forgive me if I am incorrect about somethings. If you go into your accessibility settings, then hearing devices, there should be all sorts of options for your HA's. Look for anything that says audio quality or call quality, there may be an option to alter the bandwidth for phone calls, optimizing phone call quality. I will say this though, it will not be a very dramatic difference. One other option is to adjust the blend between outside noise and phone call volume within the Starkey app! Sometimes, you need to make the call volume louder and the outside sound volume lower to isolate the call in you ears better. Let us know if any of these solutions worked out and be sure to subscribe for more! th-cam.com/users/Ziphearing?sub_confirmaton=1
I would like to see your comparison between the Genesis AI 20 vs. 24. Big price difference. Is it worth is??
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Personally, my hearing loss greatly effects my ability to hear in noise. With that being the case, the best hearing-in-noise functionality is usually implemented in the highest tech levels of each hearing aid. So for me, I would lean more towards the 24, or the highest tech level in any hearing aid. However, your situation may be greatly different than mine. Head on over to the site and see the breakdown between the different tech levels! www.ziphearing.com/starkey-genesis-ai?

@@ericstrattendgtmy I have now decided on a Signia IX. No streaming problems with my Samsung smartphone, good sound, I am satisfied.
Thanks for your wonderful review. Can you please tell me how to use the iphone as a microphone with the hearing aids? You didn’t say it. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the wonderful comment! The feature is called "Live Listen" and can be used with hearing aids that utilize the MFI (made for iPhone) bluetooth connection. Once your hearing aids are connected and turned on, go to settings app > accessibility. Select "Hearing devices", then select your hearing aids. Tap "Live Listen" and your iPhone becomes a microphone! Be sure to subscribe for more tips and videos! th-cam.com/users/Ziphearing?sub_confirmaton=1
@@Ziphearing Thanks a lot for your fast answer. Looks great 👍
At what level with in canal or 1/2 she’ll are these rechargeable and Bluetooth . Model #?
I’ll use the fact this is a very particular audience and ask other fellow Genesis AI 24 users out there: do you have issues with it “turning off” at random when in open spaces? I have been trying to diagnose this with my hearing specialist, I’ve experienced a handful of occasions where I was in open spaces (e.g. during a trail in the middle of the woods) where the hearing aid would suppress the sound for a couple of seconds like it does when there’s a loud noise, but there is none, not even wind. I suspect it has something to do with the feature to adapt automatically to the environment as you are in movement. Has anyone experienced that as well?
I did not have this problem, but I certainly think you are on the right track with your hypothesis! It could be the microphone picking up a loud "hair noise" or something and then making a quick adjustment. Sometimes, its the least obvious thing that causes the trouble! Thanks for watching and thanks for the great question for our community!
Do you know if these Starkey Hearing Aids work with the Alexa Fire Cube the way my Starkey Livio 1600's do? Apparently Starkey worked with Amazon to make this happen. I haven't heard whether the feature continued forward to newer Starkey products.
I should have said, the Fire Cube connects my hearing aids to the tv.
That is a really good question! After doing some research, and contacting Starkey, we have determined that the Gensis AI should be able to connect to the fire cube! However, there would be no sound coming out of the tv, just your HA's. Thanks for the great question and make sure you subscribe for more content! th-cam.com/users/Ziphearing?sub_confirmaton=1
How's does the audio sound quality while streaming music compare with your phonak audéo lumity 90?
Which receiver power did you have fit? For example, if 40 gain gives you sound quality issues while streaming go to 50 gn and have everything reset to you audiogram. Mine sound great while streaming my rock videos. and movies. Streaming is a separate setting and program. That probably has to be turned up also and the mics “decreased” while on streaming.
Mine sound terrible during streaming. Help!
I'm trialing a pair of Genesis AI 16 hearing aids. While I see 2-way audio listed as a feature, I haven't been able to locate/access it. Am I missing something? Thanks!
Hello! I just got my Starkey Genesis AI last week. I have a Samsung S24 Ultra. How do I activate that "spy" feature? I do have a speaker wireless accessory remote to work with my devices but, I do not always have it with me. It'd be nice to know how I can turn on this feature so I can use it when I am out at a restaurant and the person is sitting on the other side of the table. Or is it that it does not work with the S24 Ultra?
This is a really good question! Unfortunately, I have never used an android phone so I am not too familiar with the menu system and the features of the phone. I would try and poke around in the accessibility menu and see if there are any options that can be clicked in there? I am sorry i could not be of more assistance! Thanks for watching and thanks for asking a great question! Subscribe for more! th-cam.com/users/Ziphearing?sub_confirmaton=1
I'm giving up my Phonak Lumity 90Rs to get a pair of the new Genesis AI ITE hearing aids. The one feature I will miss the most is being able to be paired to eight devices and seamlessly move from one to another. The one thing I won't miss is the Phonak TV streamer. I sent the first one back for poor sound quality and the replacement is no better. I've got my fingers crossed.
That’s probably a bad idea, I have the lumity and they’re great devices. The starkey igad a more tinny sound quality according to my audiologist.. i asked to try them but i was told im best off with the ones ive got,.. also, as a singer and musician, im absolutely in love with the automatic music setting, no other hearing aids have that, theyd had to be made manually is is never successful
@@kaylasmusic Okay. If they work well for you, that's great. They don't work well for me. I've been wearing the Phonak Lumitys since the first week in January and it's time to give up on them, in my opinion.
@@watermain48 ya, depends on how well they’re fitted as well.. what problems did you have with them? My audiologist chose those because im a singer and I play piano, so i need something that offers the best sound quality and as you know, the lumity has a built in automatic music setting that is based off of your default one
@@kaylasmusic They were fitted utilizing real ear measurement and aligned really well with my audiogram.I don't listen to a lot of music anymore so I care much about that. For me, they don't do well in situations with a lot of background noise, unless I am using the Roger On device, which I don't always have on hand. The Lumitys are dismal in the wind and when I tried wearing a sock hat to lessen the wind noise, they kept turning on and off. I was having to change the wax guards every few days. The list goes on...they're just not a good fit for my needs.
@watermain48 as a non musician/singer and currently wearing the Phonak Lumity I love connecting to multiple devices and they do well in a “normal” hearing environment. But I 100% agree with how terrible they are in the wind. My wind adjustment is 1 click away from max and they are still terrible in the wind. I have also had challenging issues with Bluetooth streaming volume levels as well. I work from home and stream a lot throughout my day and the volume levels are incredibly inconsistent. As an iPhone/Apple user I have found MFI HA’s seem to have worked best for me (I get that we are all diff). These Starkey’s are intriguing. Great review, great content.
I just got the Genesis AI today to demo for 2 weeks before I go forward with them. I’m hoping it works! At first, Bluetooth was cutting in and out after trying to test the music app out. It hasn’t done that since. But background noise is to much for me and I’m not able to escape the full AC on blast while listening to music. Help with that area? Please!
Love these. Only using one but the AI is far better than Intent1 (for me) which I really struggled with tbh. Especially wind noise and others around me. Couldn't focus on anyone but could hear someone else 3 tables away!
Edge is a brilliant tool as it concentrates its sound. The profiles switch automatically like to outdoor when its noisy outside and the noise cancelling doesnt cause a blocked ear experience.
Tried the intent1 for 8 weeks and got to hate it. However went to a concert last week and was concerned to keep the Starkey in but it performed perfectly.

I wonder what the difference is between these and signia charge and go?
Here is Nick's review on the charge&go model: th-cam.com/video/C71nwjuHwUk/w-d-xo.html
I also watched your Oticon Real review video. Which one do you prefer or use as your "daily driver?"
HI Chris, for Nick's unique case, he actually ended up going with the Phonak, out of the 3, primarily for Bluetooth reasons, here's his review on that one here: th-cam.com/video/MGwvoXmZFk0/w-d-xo.html
Good review! I would like to get the AI 24's. I have an Android phone. Will this cause me compatibility problems?
Dr Cliff’s review (also on TH-cam) says Yes it would. Recommends use with an iPhone.
I can't find a list of the 77 languages it translates into. Can you put a link?
Hi there! I can't seem to find a link with a list of all the languages available for translation. However, It seems like there are 27 available languages and this feature is only available on the "24" level of technology. Thanks and be sure to subscribe for more content in the near future! th-cam.com/users/Ziphearing?sub_confirmaton=1
Very helpful review! Having reviewed both Genesis and Lumity and commented on the "quality" of music streaming on each, how do they compare side by side on this feature? Overall, which one do you prefer?
The Phonak has a built in automatic music setting based on your default one and based on the environmental aspects of the music,.. No other manufacturer has that
Didn’t see any mention of the language translator. Were you able to test this function?
I wish you would have spoken about the connectivity with devices OTHER than just apple products. But overall, good review. Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback, I will certainly try to include more info about that in the future! I am an iPhone user and do not have access to an android device, so I am not able to speak to the connectivity and experience on android. Thank you for watching and I hope to improve on this in the future.
This is critically important and thanks for addressing it. The general understanding is that the iPhone app for Starkey is very good and the Android app is... not at the same level of reliability even with a top tier phone. (and yes, also understanding the limitations of ASHA vs MFi)
Nice review. Thanks. That's really unfortunate about having to turn on edge mode. Obviously it uses more power since it's doing more processing, and someone at Starkey thought people will be put off by the short battery life and hence this kind of kludgy fix. Let us decide! I don't mind changing batteries every day if I have to. And "double tap" sounds pretty lame. Come one, double tapping your ears? I have the IIC (no app) so that's what I'd have to do. Starkey makes great HAs, but on the UI side they kind of drop the ball. Like the phone tone thing they have to make volume and memory changes. I think somebody's brother in law is in charge of UI at Starkey. I am glad to hear your comment about "all the power" this HA has, which caused plosives to be a problem for you. Good you got that fixed. For me, that "problem" means the HA has a lot of CPU available to crank up the high frequencies (which, digiitally, require a lot more processing). That is good news. It means the "new processor "thing is not just hype. Zip is the place to get them (unless you're loaded with money). Where I am now, there is no Zip and I'd have to pay about $3K more to get them. Anyway, thanks again, you've convinced me to get these. I gotta find some way to keep edge mode on all the time. I program my HAs myself so I'll find out what can be done there. Hopefully, like you say, Starkey will hear users feedback and give the audiologist a way to turn them on as the default, battery life be what it may.
I like the tap control, fast and easy. Sometimes inconvenient or rude to get phone out. So I find it NOT lame and quite useful!
I’m looking towards the genesis 24 ai, does $7400.00 sound about right?
@@richardcobb2852 I priced a pair at Zip Hearing that's online with local hearing aid dispensers and the price was something like 4600 for the pair. I called around various Starkey-recommended sellers and got quotes as high as 8,000. I think Zip has the best prices. One thing people don't consider enough is the quality of "fitting" you get, but my experience is that they are ALL pretty bad. So that led me to find the hardware and software and program my own. That's pretty extreme for most people, so what I would do is ask the hearing aid seller if you can use Starkey's "DIY-programming" tablet device (I forgot the exact name) where you can tweak the settings interactively while listening to speech or music or whatever.
After watching your video, I am grateful for Phonak Virto Paradise hearing aids this year. Especially the MiniControl. Not a big fan of Bluetooth.
Hmmmm....my experience with these hearing aids differs quite a bit from yours. I've only had them a week but i find myself constantly tweaking them to try to improve the clarity. Quite frankly, they kind of suck. Perhaps this is because I have an android phone and its not really specifically made to work with Android?
Regardless of what mode i choose (including Edge Mode) i find that the main issue is voice clarity. It's just not clear. My hearing loss is mild to moderate so its not secondary to a profound hearing loss.
I'm still in the trial period for my Genesis AI 24's which is great because these are not for me. They are not even remotely worth their cost.
I appreciate your review, though. Thanks.
I currently use Starkey Evolv AI earphones, and one of the things that didn't satisfy me is the bluetooth connection in audio streaming.
