I believe Iroh has been actively on the avatars side since the beginning of the show. He almost actively slows Zuko down when chasing the avatar. But he understands the journey his nephew has to go and wants to help him through his trauma. Him being one of the leaders of the white lotus is what seals the deal for me on that theory
Except he gives actual advice to zhao. He helps launch fireballs at team avatar in the beginning. Him trying to find a lotus tile is the closest he gets to slowing down zuko. He tells zuko when avatar team is about to sneak away with the pirate ship in that episode as well. He only really starts defending the avatar at season 2.
@@Akbar_and_Shaa that does actually get explained, see he DOES work for the white lotus a organization built on peace, however he has a conflict riddled before time and has a genuine conflict of interest when with zuko, he has convinced zuko to let them go afew times especially at the beginning not just for the avatar but also for his nephew, as he loves zuko, and he genuinely has the belief that zuko is the KEY to saving the fire nation from itself. So the entire time he is guiding him properly because he doesn't wanna fully sabotage his nephew because zuko is smart enough to catch on. He also wants to teach him because he knows while rn he is using it against the avavtar later he can hopefully ,if zuko follows the path iro has for him, use it with the avatar. Everything else iro does is because he is smart, he can't just not help the firenation without getting caught, and he can't keep an eye on zhao if he does ANY form of savatuage. Iro is very smart, and thus protrays himself as a dumb old man to get people guard down, and excuse his acts of incompetence down to his age. If he take the middle road as hard as it is for him it truly is the best path a member of the white lotus can play. Tricking his enemies into thinking what he wants them to about him. "He was once a great general but is now a febal old man obsessed with tea and games. He also gets to have fun doing these things so he can make it all the more convincing if he plays into it. Now here and there he messes up due to his love for tea, but that is his real age showing through. He can't always be wise, but alot of his moves are calculated until they are out of the fire nations gaze then he get a touch more relaxed, sometimes abit too relaxed. You see him accepting the banishment way better then zuko and fully commiting to the new role.its so interesting to see how much iro planned ahead but it can also feel abit unfortunate as zuko learns from his diary that he planned zuko to fail at catching the avavtar. Im glad zuko didnt feel groomedinto the role and that iro tried his best to only nudge zuko that way and not shove him or groom him into it. That shows how much he loved his nephew more then he wanted world peace

17:00 Unfortunately, thats not true. It’s been confirmed in the sequel series The Legend of Korra that Zhao was dragged into the Spirit World and spent the rest of eternity wandering a maze of mist slowly losing his mind. Arguably a fate worse than death, but he still didn’t kill him.

There's a good moment in this episode. When Zhao confronts Zuko, he says "You should have chosen to accept your failure; you're a disgrace. Then, at least, you could have lived!"
Then later, when the Water Spirit grabs Zhao to pull him under, Zuko reaches out his hand to save him, but Zhao refuses it, preferring to die rather than live in diagrace.

3. Based on LOK, the reason why the Spirit world looked so bad is because of the Avatar's absence letting the Spirit Realm rot since Aang was supposed to be the bridge that connected the two.
It is kind of funny how completely vulnerable the Moon and Ocean spirits are. Imagine if some random wild animal wandered into the oasis and decided to have a little snack.

Ko is also the Child of the Mother of Faces, who’s said to give life to all beings; you can imagine her dismay to find out her child is undoing all of her hard work using her methods.

@@tsukimilo Koh didn’t steal Kuruk’s face. Kuruk died young because of an encounter with a dark spirit that made him sick, and every time he hunted down a dark spirit, his life force was drained.

I definitely feel like Aang murdered a lot of fire nation people in this finale because like, it is only after he becomes an OP water fish that he develops such mixed feelings of the avatar state. Like, Aang has nightmares about this event-the power-the loss of self control, etc.
I feel like his reaction would only be this adverse unless he actually killed people.
Or, even though he wasn't in control, he still felt extremely guilty since it was still his body, just like he felt extremely guilty about letting his people die, even though if he had stayed, he would have been killed alongside them.

Either way, though, I think the Kataang angle failed. They forgot to show Katara's growing love for Aang. And I definitely think Zutara is the superior couple.

I like Katara with Zuko for the sheer symmetry: He's fire to her water, he's gentle to her temper ( though he has one too), both are parents to Aang, both dressed up as spirits, both have vexing siblings (though Sokka got better), both lost their mothers to the fire nation and both are very powerful benders. That's before you even get to their chemistry.
Avatar Wan's back story is not denying the Moon as the first water bender. People learned (HOW) to bend from animals but they didn't recived bending from animals. The best example of this is Wan performing the dragon dance with an actual dragon.

I agree wholeheartedly! I love both versions of how people got bending and I don't think they're mutually exclusive at all!
Agreed, however, while it doesn't contradict it, I actually like believing that the people learning from the moon is mostly just a story that developed over nearly 10,000 years. It's highly unlikely anyone (other than the avatar connecting to Wan) would actually be able to tell you what happened back then. Origin myths are fascinating and the "truth" is often far less interesting than the stories people come up with to explain the unexplainable.
@@Zippy_815 this is pretty much the way to square it. everyone has creation myths, and they aren't all exact truths. people forgot that lion turtles were real, and made up stories to explain their world. or, and this is something else i like, some spirits snuck into the material world and spread lies to screw with the humans.
Iroh threatening Zhao like that actually feels like one of the rawest scenes in this show. _Such_ a cool character

While Aang did absolutely fold the people on the ships, the death of Zhao is 100% the work of the Ocean spirit, who let Aang go, remembered the actual dude that slew his fish-buddy was sill breathing, and corrected that oversight as quickly as possible.

I did this as a kid and i was unapologetically a zuko katara shiper, / a zuko touph shipper, i didnt like aang getung with katara it felt odly gross idk why, it felt like it was only there so they could have him save the airbender tribe, but then that completely got wiped out in kora when airbending returned to the world in whole, i felt like that should have been an issue un korra for her to fight with, and that aang could have been a great ace celibate icon, calming down into a wonderful wise old monk, who would grow very old and settle down in his monestary once the world was at peace (mostly), then babysit and train the kids of team avatar, being the best uncle ever., i feel like saka and suki would have been a wonderful long time couple, along with touph and zuko learning together and bringing peace and a stronger healthy conection between the earth and fire kingdoms, katara could find love as she got older, or be a strong single female leader of the souther water tribe, bringing them to new heights with the help of her friends, while saka and suki brought new life and culture to kioshi island , and formed a trade bond with the souther water tribe. I feel like that would have gone hard, and that way not every character needs to be all about romance. And i get zuko was that character sort of [even with him having the most wholse and chill relationship with fan lady] but in the end i feel HE needed MORE love friendly and romance, and we werent given enough zuko, his ark went hard and he deserved more screen time just like touph did.

@@siobhannoble8545 especially since it’s Aang and Katara that win and ultimately get married and eventually have kids and grandchildren. Zutara may have started out hot and heavy, but it was ultimately toxic and was snuffed out after Zuko betrayed Katara in the crystal cave.
The funny thing is, as a kid Zutara never even crossed my mind lol. Katara and Aang always seemed to be so obviously meant to be... but thats just my opinion hahaha

Avatar Kuruk was actually the one who fought Koh, but miraculously he didn't lose his face in the process. Dude is way more of a badass than he let's on. I can only assume that his was kicking Koh's ass so hard Koh felt the need to run and hide.

One of my favorite little details in the final episode is how, when the moon was dead, everything was in black and white… except for Yue’s eyes.

So excited to see you react to season 2! Honestly this show is just so well rounded that every season is good. Season 1 definitely doesn’t deserve the flack it gets because it has some bad episodes or because it doesnt have Toph or Azula in it (which is fair because those two are great characters but it doesnt make season 1 any worse). Something fun that I notice about ATLA, especially around the 5:00 mark, when Danny mentions using Appa for battle:
Aang is a vegan. Appa is his animal guide; the creature that understands and bonds with him more than anyone. Flying Bison are probably vegan too. Which means even Sokka’s “Appa ate Momo!” comment has more layers to it.

Went to the wiki to double-check on Zhao. Zhao's body dies here; his soul is banished into the Fog of Lost Souls, not to be seen again until Legend of Korra. So yeah, Aang/La straight up drowned at least one man.

16:25 I’m gonna have my um actually moment here; that’s not Aang in that moment, that’s the ocean spirit using Aang’s body as a tool to enact revenge on the fire nation for killing his wife.
(I literally just figured this out while watching this video series)
This is also why in this scene he waits specificity to see who bows- (the people who respect and would never harm the spirits) and who get defensive (the people who only see the spirits as a means to an end) before attacking, because spirits don’t *really* recognize the difference between nations nor do they attach bending to nations and/or morality, so it couldn’t just go around attacking *any* fire bender and call it even.

Watching the Shyamalan movie was a painful experience. I could write a long essay, with references, on why it was a horrible movie, did not do the show any justice and what could have been improved. But, for some reason, watching it again with commentary from you sounds like it'll be a hoot. Like watching NuxTaku watch Velma.
I remember nervously chewing on a glow stick while watching the part with ko then going to a party afterwards constantly trying to make sure none of the glow liquid was still in my mouth scared that I was either going to die from glow liquid poisoning or get my face stolen that night. I was definitely on full anxiety mode the whole time and didn’t want to talk to anyone at the party. Weird traumatic childhood memories for the win. 😂
