for those uncomfortable with lau and his "sister", I just wanted to point out that they are Chinese and in China it is common, especially in the past, to refer to people close to you as "brothers and sisters" it is considered a gesture of affection and respect indeed no blood relationship
Isn’t he supposed to know that? He has watched Heaven’s Official Blessing where Hua Cheng calls him Gege (aka older brother) and they are definitely not brothers 😂 . Although i’m not sure if it was said in the english dub?
I will say (as an actual murder mystery author) this is not one of my fave arcs; but there IS something in Book of Atlantic that would make you VERY confused if you didn't watch this one first!
The shotgun bit made me remember how much I loved Danny's skits. Shoutout to Cabby Cash, the dude who didn't read Harry Potter, and Danny(who betrayed his boss and killed Clark)
iirc the official eng translation explains in a note that lau calling ran mao his "sister" is using it in the way that chinese (and japanese, maybe?) ppl will sometimes call their friends their siblings in casual conversation a lot (e.g. nii-san/gege). like how ppl might call adults they aren't related to "aunties" or "uncles." so at least in the english canon, she's never confirmed to be blood related or not
whoever uploaded black butler is actually insane cause the whole show isn't available anywhere ALL together and book of murder really did get thrown off the face of the earth💀💀
And to think Black Butler content was absolutely everywhere you looked, especially during book of circus and book of Atlantic... circus troupe cosplayer were walking around everywhere in the anime cons I went to every year

.........am I the only one, like, SUPER hyped to see him react to Book of Atlantic? Like, yeah, I like Book of Murder but BOOK OF ATLANTIC?! With THIS MAN?! I cannot wait
Fun fact: J. Michael Tatum, the VA for Sebastian, is actually fluent in French. So he didn't have to learn shit. In fact, he probably wrote the lines for the dub.
11:11 "Locked-room" mysteries were a popular trope in detective/mystery novels during this time. It ties into Ciel saying he likes reading different publications. And that exact example that Ciel uses is supposed to also foreshadow the identity of the new brown-haired guy.19:50 That's non-canon so, as far as the canon goes, we aren't yet aware if ghosts are "real" or not lol Same goes for demon hounds, angels, and everything else that pops up in Season 1 and 2. 21:20 This makes me feel like you would like Fruits Basket
The "he is like Oscar Wilde character" comment is so relevant though ! It could mean 1.Only a man attracted to men could write a man so attractive. -> having Conan Doyle say that could be a reference to the theory that Doyle was bi as he hung out with a lot of notorious gay men; and in his works, Sherlock and Watson hang out in a lot of notoriously gay meetup spots like the turkish baths. So even if he wasn't himself attracted to men he still would be familliar with gay culture at the time. 2. It shows that even though the character is oblivious to it because he is fascinated, Sebastian is a bad person. Specifically I think it's comparing him to both Lord Henry Wotton (manipulative) and Dorian Gray (pretty on the outside, ugly on the inside) in The picture of Dorian Gray.
Ok so I don't know if anybody noticed this but in the video when Lou and Ran Mow are rummaging through Ciel's things Ran Mow is wearing Ciel's hat from when he disguised as a girl in the Jack the Ripper arc. The moment where this happens is at running time 18:18 Also I can't wait for Danny to see the book of the Atlantic arc because it's like Titanic meets the Walking Dead.
You know that there’s a massive storm at that time right? That’s why, the police can’t come, especially when Phantomhive’s manor is located far out of London city.
I understand why Danny says that he doesn't like this as much as book of circus, which is part of the reason I'll always say that black butler is my favorite MANGA and not anime. Also, can't wait for him to see book of Atlantic. That is 100% my favorite part of the anime😂
I agree I love manga, and even tho itvis fun to see all this in motion it dosen't have the same inpact like when you read... I really liked this arc in manga but the next one is my favorite...
Lau and Ran-Mao aren't actually siblings, they're childhood friends and she's his bodyguard, iirc. She's supposed to be really strong, but we haven't seen her fight much. She killed Mina and her husband and surprised Bard in the manga, and does some other stuff that suggests she has super strength and fight training but i think that's it.
5:30 to clear Danny's mind, I want to make clear that Ran Mao isn't his sister. They're Chinese and in China people often refer to each other as sister or brother (usually with 'younger' or 'older' prefixes) in order to show closeness and respect. It's often used between close friends and sometimes colleges, not just relatives. This is actually specified in the manga (with Lau calling her I think Mei Mei (or little sister) with an explanation bubble) but I guess they decided not to for the anime 😂
I bought the entire black butler series movies and all cause I didn’t wanna deal with none of that, so glad you found something to watch it on, love your reactions keep up the amazing work Danny your a gem.
WOOO I love this ova!!! It's such a great arc and the many turns in the whodunit scenario are some of my favorite writing from early Black Butler Edit: Oh my gosh I'm so glad you didn't skip it cause it's definitely NOT skippable, I hope the second half convinces you as to why and that you enjoy it more
Didn't anyone notice that the orchestra singer was named Irene...like...I don't know..Irene Adler!!!! And the writer, saying he's writing detective novels while he's more interested in writing about history. Who does that sound like. Who...who...who... Someone whose reputation was tied to just one character from his novels. Does that ring a bell. Probably...just probably, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created Sherlock Holmes....AND..Irene Adler, who is an Orchestra singer. My oh my, too much Sherlock Holmes references it's weird how nobody noticed.
As a detective novel stan, I'm just too entertained by whodunnits PFFFFFFFFFT it's why this is my favorite arc by far, besides the reveals from after part one Also, having read the manga before watching the anime, I do remember it being a bit more fun in the manga. Who knows, maybe it's also a difference in adaptation
22:58 And THIS is why you should've watched the rest of Season 1. Cuz all your questions get answers in Episode 20. But here's the spoiler if you really don't wanna watch it. . . Finny is a human experiment. He was given super strength to be the ultimate human soldier and weapon. Meyrin is an assassin and excellent sniper, mainly specializing in taking out politicians. Bardroy is a mercenary/ex-soldier.
none of those backstories are canon. although the professions are very much similar, they have completely different backstories in the manga. it would just confuse him more.
As gathered from other subs, the French bit is roughly;- Ciel: Looks like he's a habitual offender. Sebastian: He can't control himself. A fool with no sense of shame. Ciel: Ah...a disease no doctor can save him from.
The thread-under-the-door trick is a pretty famous one actually. It was used in an early episode of Detective Conan, and I think it was mentioned once in Bungo.
The second half of BOM is more engaging, but this act is just kinda chill. I love it a lot, but for something crazy just wait for Book of the Atlantic.
Yeah trying to find Murder and Atlantic is hell on earth you have my full respects for committing to all of that and I am so excited to your reactions to the bizarre twists that happen in this two part OVA LMAO reading it in the manga was such a headache
Lau refers to her as his sister in a honorific kind of way. He uses the Chinese term for a younger woman which doesn't have a direct translation and the closest is "like a little sister."
The next movie/episode reaction is going to be so hype. Danny will hate the odd one out death's existence, but I think the cause will more than make up for it for him. Also, can't believe he didn't figure out Jeremy immediately.
The Murder Cruise is better tbh, but most people adore Book of Murder because it was very unexpected. Anime didn't really continue to follow a manga like this after they'd reached a 'conclusion' at the time, you either got one long continuous slog through everything Hunter x Hunter or Naruto style, or you got 12 episodes and that was it. So that Black Butler was popular enough to get continued, faithfully, without filler or being dropped? was a shock and considered amazing.
Book of murder is a slow start, and if I remember I used to be less hyped about this one but it added so much more to the characters and that made me love it! Wait for the second half tho.
answer time: the key trick was a common trope written in murder mystery Lao's sister is like an adopted sister Lao also has connections to the black market and underworld people so he's around for information Finny is an experimental super soldier thing, (had to kill his friends/ other patients, not spoiler because he's said so in the series and implied it here)
9:53 i’m like p. sure he’s right here. exsanguination would be the mechanism of death, the the cause of death would be whatever the wound was. mechanism of death is the physiological disruption in the body, while cause is the disease/injury.
Just would like to point out, Ran Mao is not actually his sister. She’s his bodyguard/personal assassin, but like they don’t go around disclosing that info, so it’s more of a disguise…
ive barely started the video and im already giggling a little at the "im fine with hackers taking my money. im fine with them taking my identity, to be completely honest my identity sucks, they can have it, but finding out how i got access to black butler: book of murder.. that i cannot have" cos honestly same
I’m so glad you got into book of murder 😂 this is literally my favorite arc as well. I think it does pick up tbh. At first I was bored but then it got interesting. At least for me ??? Glad I’m not alone with other fans though lol
As someone who literally has French as their first language, i don't understand what the hell Ciel and Sebastian were trying to say either? I get it's probably the voice actors that just didn't know how to speak French but it's so funny to me that I genuinely just thought they were talking a whole other language at first.
As a french fan, the french was so horrible that I didn't recognize it was french until you said it. And even now I can't understand half the word they're saying, it's so bad even knowing french and english doesn't help understanding !!!!
I love book of murder! Not my favorite arc, but I find it enjoyable. Also if you don't really like this arc, I think you'll like book of atlantic much better
I really appreciate you taking Black Butler a chance. I've been a fan of this for years now and now knowing what I know now as a manga reader, you are in for a ride. Makes me very excited how you will react once the new season comes out next year :))
As someone who watched the anime first and purchased the manga later, I'll say that while I didn't dislike Book of Murder when I watched it, it definitely wasn't my favorite. I liked parts of it, but the mystery didn't engage me. I only ever watched it once, and it had been YEARS by the time I got to that point in the manga, and I wasn't sure how I would feel about it because Book of Circus was so good. After reading the manga, it's leagues better. It's weird because nothing of the plot is changed, per se, but the pacing is tighter. You feel more engaged with the tension, and it's much easier to follow along with why things are happening (like how they can't leave the house because there's a significant storm outside, so they must wait to call the police until the storm breaks). It'll never be my favorite arc, but I appreciate it in the manga because it gives you the sense of why it is happening - Ciel was supposed to save the children in the previous arc. Still, he instead burned that manor down, so now the Queen is displeased, and her bodyguards come to monitor him to test his loyalties. I think that's where most of the tension lies - the shorter Charles guy is fucking terrifying in the manga and is poking at everything to try and trip Ciel up; it's nerve-wracking to watch because you don't know what'll happen if he's dissatisfied with Ciel's position as the Queen's Guard Dog. This was a long comment, but I hope that helps with some context.
5:30 I think it's "sister" as in she is like his adopted servant? I think there was some lore about 19th century China. 6:10 The funny part is that he is called Siemens - like one of the biggest companies from Germany, that produces electricity and all types of technology from trains, to computers, phones and medical equipment. Which important they had supplied a lot of stuff for the Nazis (forced labour). And made airplanes during WW1 (unforced). So you know - all the innuendos are on you. xD 6:35 *Hers ego. Yana Toboso is a woman (can be noticed, by a lot of better written female characters than in any other series from early 2000s). 19:30 Well you met other Phantomhive servants. And Tanaka is the only one from the original manor. Sure he is old, but you have seen in other series what Japanese old men can do. Obviously he would do this, even if he was mostly retired as the main butler. 25:45 Animated - my favourite is probably either Red Butler Arc (Jack the Reaper) or Book of Atlantic. It may change, if the adaptation of the next arc that is coming next year is good/improves the source material (that arc for me was just ok). Manga-wise - Emerald Witch arc or some parts of the Blue Saga would be my choice. One because of the setting and historical implications other due to plot revelations and full backstories for the servant.
So excited to see this video right as I finally caught up on your Black Butler reaction vids! Also I feel you on the accessibility issues with this movie, I had to sail the high seas to get it, if you catch my drift ;)
rewatching that scene with Ciel beating the shit out of Sebastian reminded me of the fact that I, when I watched it for the first time, thought Sebastian was actually dead. Though to be fair, that was my first time watching Black Butler (and Anime in general), also I was like 11 or so.
10:25 standing in the corner quietly might've drawn even more suspicion! 11:31 ...Well, some of you clearly never read Astrid Lindgren's Kalle Blomkvist at age six or watched Mentalist at age ten and it shows. I knew SO many "mystery novel" tricks when I was twelve...
Between the two movies, I enjoy book of Atlantic better. That being said, I still did enjoy book of murder. I’m glad Danny still went to look for it, though
Yeah, the first half is just setup, why is why this may seem underwhelming. But I do love Book of Murder for what the revelations do to a part of the series you may not have given much mind to before
okay i scrolled through the comments looking for some french fellows and didn't find any, but to anyone reading this, know that the moment where ciel and sebastian speak french is absolutely delightful and a true pleasure, because it's absolutely and completly impossible to understand what they say, we can get a few words, even get some parts of the sentences with the subtitles on, but mostly, we only know they speak french because of arthur. i'm respectfully never getting tired of this part of the show also, i was waiting for your reaction on this bgjkdlnj i jumped as soon as i saw it on my yt page, i promise you the second part of the movie adds some spark x)
For anybody wanting the (loose) translation to what ciel and Sebastian said in French, here you go: C: “he seemed like a steady man, but a little alcohol makes him like this. from the look of things, it’s a habit” S: “and yet, he’s unable to control himself, he’s either a complete fool, or he has no sense of shame” C: “so it’s the type of sickness that no doctor can cure?”

I will say (as an actual murder mystery author) this is not one of my fave arcs; but there IS something in Book of Atlantic that would make you VERY confused if you didn't watch this one first!

my SON my poor little baby boy yana-san i am in your *walls*
And to think Black Butler content was absolutely everywhere you looked, especially during book of circus and book of Atlantic... circus troupe cosplayer were walking around everywhere in the anime cons I went to every year
right! it was so popular when it first came out :,) and they recently took what WAS on netflix off >:( im hoping that hype comes back with season 4!!@@aureliaavalon
I swear someone uploaded the movie to youtube, but I can't find it now. Like where did Danny go to find it.
@@Bisexualdragon4042 youtube ain't letting nobody have happiness that probably got taken down 😔
Well now it’s all available on crunchyroll except book of murder unfortunately
.........am I the only one, like, SUPER hyped to see him react to Book of Atlantic? Like, yeah, I like Book of Murder but BOOK OF ATLANTIC?! With THIS MAN?! I cannot wait
I can't wait to see his reaction to THAT big reveal. One of my favorite moments.
Book of Atlantic was just 🤌
Fun fact: J. Michael Tatum, the VA for Sebastian, is actually fluent in French. So he didn't have to learn shit. In fact, he probably wrote the lines for the dub.
It probably helps that he also had to voice the human personification of france
@@GretchenGoebeltrue lol😂
I can't wait to see Danny's reaction to Book of the Atlantic✨
(We are phoenixes!🔥)
I can’t wait either!!!!
The best arc in my opinion 🥰
Best arc fr fr
SOOOOO many twists on that God damn boat 😂
Sameee
The face Danny made when Tanaka threw that dude was great 😂
Also wow really? You can't find it anywhere? I'm glad I bought the DVD when I did.
I bought the Blu-ray/DVD years ago, before I started streaming recently…
I guess buying Blu-rays/DVDs has its payoffs
I have the dvd too. I didn’t realize it had been scrubbed from everywhere online. I wonder why
You can find it but it's on official streaming platforms but on those grey area sites that are not quiet legal
I've never trusted streaming unless it's for first-watch - if I plan to see again I buy 😂
I keep trying to get him to watch fruits basket but it never wins polls
Dude am i the only one who doesn't know whats the identity of the brown haired dude ?? Did i miss something ??
@@C13lluxer The most well known mystery author in Europe, english. Trying not to spoil for Danny.
@@elwynnquinslais2776 it shouldn't be spoiling for Danny as it got revealed in this episode, I guess he just missed it/it went over his head 😅
The "he is like Oscar Wilde character" comment is so relevant though !
It could mean
1.Only a man attracted to men could write a man so attractive.
The moment where this happens is at running time 18:18
Also I can't wait for Danny to see the book of the Atlantic arc because it's like Titanic meets the Walking Dead.
Fun fact tanaka was the orginal servent of ciel even before sebastian arrived
You know that there’s a massive storm at that time right? That’s why, the police can’t come, especially when Phantomhive’s manor is located far out of London city.
"You have to humbly accept yourself into a grave"
GIRL IM WORKING OUT AND I MY LAUGH WAS INHUMANE WHEN YOU SAID THAT IN THE MIDDLE OF MY PUSH UP.
100% agree! The anime flows so inconsistently at times while the manga constantly feels like it one upping itself, but that's just me
Book of atlnatic is fantastic its super underrated in anime sphere for sure
Yesss book of atlantic 😭😭🩷
It's such a great arc and the many turns in the whodunit scenario are some of my favorite writing from early Black Butler
Edit: Oh my gosh I'm so glad you didn't skip it cause it's definitely NOT skippable, I hope the second half convinces you as to why and that you enjoy it more
Didn't anyone notice that the orchestra singer was named Irene...like...I don't know..Irene Adler!!!!
Huh, we all noticed, the author's name is literally Arthur Conan Doyle.
As a detective novel stan, I'm just too entertained by whodunnits PFFFFFFFFFT it's why this is my favorite arc by far, besides the reveals from after part one
Also, having read the manga before watching the anime, I do remember it being a bit more fun in the manga. Who knows, maybe it's also a difference in adaptation
Yeah the only difference i can remmeber of is Ciel fending for himself when he got accused
SPOILER!
How has he not realized the doctor is Arthur Conan Doyle?
22:58 And THIS is why you should've watched the rest of Season 1. Cuz all your questions get answers in Episode 20.
But here's the spoiler if you really don't wanna watch it.
.
.
Finny is a human experiment. He was given super strength to be the ultimate human soldier and weapon. Meyrin is an assassin and excellent sniper, mainly specializing in taking out politicians. Bardroy is a mercenary/ex-soldier.
none of those backstories are canon. although the professions are very much similar, they have completely different backstories in the manga. it would just confuse him more.
That Scooby Doo slander made my physically clench my entire being.
As gathered from other subs, the French bit is roughly;-
Ciel: Looks like he's a habitual offender.
Sebastian: He can't control himself. A fool with no sense of shame.
Ciel: Ah...a disease no doctor can save him from.
How did you manage to get that it literally sounds like gibberish 😭😭
@@Neflheimen Who knows? the sub teams are amazing
I agree that part 1 is a bit slow, but part 2 makes this arc personally very enjoyable to return to, and its essential for setting up future arcs.
Book of murder is one of my favorites.... thats it
After what Danny said at the end of the video... ouch lol
I had watched book of murder on a illegal anime streaming website like 3 years ago, it got taken down a year ago unfortunately
Sadge
"What does Neji think about Kiba?"
Fanfiction tells me is the bromance we needed but never got
Book of murder is a slow start, and if I remember I used to be less hyped about this one but it added so much more to the characters and that made me love it!
Wait for the second half tho.
answer time:
the key trick was a common trope written in murder mystery
Lao's sister is like an adopted sister
Lao also has connections to the black market and underworld people so he's around for information
Finny is an experimental super soldier thing, (had to kill his friends/ other patients, not spoiler because he's said so in the series and implied it here)
as someone who hasn’t paid for anime since 2018 i found book of murder almost immediately
Share thy secrets 😔
I love book of murder so much it's literally my favorite arc
9:53 i’m like p. sure he’s right here. exsanguination would be the mechanism of death, the the cause of death would be whatever the wound was. mechanism of death is the physiological disruption in the body, while cause is the disease/injury.
I like the comment about the mangaka rizing his own character Sebastian. Its nice to notice these funny details that usually go unnoticed.
Ciel's feelings on Finny are actually touched up on later on!
Not anime yet tho.
I'm curious, what are his thoughts on Finny?
What do you mean? Can you spoiler me?
Just would like to point out, Ran Mao is not actually his sister. She’s his bodyguard/personal assassin, but like they don’t go around disclosing that info, so it’s more of a disguise…
LOL Danny isn't ready for Jeremy's secrets XD
Dunno if anyone's mentioned it before but the VA for Lau is the same guy who voiced Victor Nikiforov. Bloow my mind first time I found out 😂
Lord may not forgive what sins Danny had to do to get this book
I think all of the Sherlock references have gone over his head 😅. That's too bad because I thought Yana was really clever for that!
ive barely started the video and im already giggling a little at the "im fine with hackers taking my money. im fine with them taking my identity, to be completely honest my identity sucks, they can have it, but finding out how i got access to black butler: book of murder.. that i cannot have" cos honestly same
I’m so glad you got into book of murder 😂 this is literally my favorite arc as well.
Fun fact Sebastian’s VA is fluent in French and his husband is a professional interpreter 🥰🐬
*I cannot wait for the Vanitas reaction. God damn it just react to it already!!!!!*
Yeah Danny when are we getting Vanitas
I can’t wait for it either
There are certain scenes, both wholesome and not, that I'm looking forward to...
Yes Danny!!! ❤️ My favorite TH-camr and series. You made my Wednesday ^-^
Danny: I had to search the entire Internet to find Book of Murder
Me: *does a quick search and finds it in literally 5 seconds*
Where did you find it 😭 I’ve been looking for ages and this video is literally the closest I’ve come to watching it. I cannot find it anywhere
So you know - all the innuendos are on you. xD
6:35 *Hers ego.
Someone else who’s favourite arc is Emerald Witch, finally!!
So excited to see this video right as I finally caught up on your Black Butler reaction vids! Also I feel you on the accessibility issues with this movie, I had to sail the high seas to get it, if you catch my drift ;)
They aren't reacting normally because they're Victorian. Nobody was allowed to act how they felt, and EVERYTHING was an omen of death.
bro Book of Murder Is a crazy reference to a Sherlock Holmes book.
I just love this movie!!
Pretty sure that writer guy is the creator of Sherlock Holmes
It is
Hooray! I’m so glad you found a copy of this arc! Book of Murder is my personal favorite! I hope you enjoy.
rewatching that scene with Ciel beating the shit out of Sebastian reminded me of the fact that I, when I watched it for the first time, thought Sebastian was actually dead.
Your first mistake with murder mysteries was having Scooby Doo as a baseline :x
As a french person... where the hell did they get their french from, this is uncomprehensible!
Yeah, the first half is just setup, why is why this may seem underwhelming. But I do love Book of Murder for what the revelations do to a part of the series you may not have given much mind to before
okay i scrolled through the comments looking for some french fellows and didn't find any, but to anyone reading this, know that the moment where ciel and sebastian speak french is absolutely delightful and a true pleasure, because it's absolutely and completly impossible to understand what they say, we can get a few words, even get some parts of the sentences with the subtitles on, but mostly, we only know they speak french because of arthur. i'm respectfully never getting tired of this part of the show
also, i was waiting for your reaction on this bgjkdlnj i jumped as soon as i saw it on my yt page, i promise you the second part of the movie adds some spark x)
For anybody wanting the (loose) translation to what ciel and Sebastian said in French, here you go:
C: “he seemed like a steady man, but a little alcohol makes him like this. from the look of things, it’s a habit”
S: “and yet, he’s unable to control himself, he’s either a complete fool, or he has no sense of shame”
C: “so it’s the type of sickness that no doctor can cure?”
It took years and watching Danny watch black butler that it clicked. Finny sounds kinda like Pinky from Pinky and the Brain. …This feels like something I definitely should have realized sooner.
Ooh, yes! My favorite book! Ok, so, first time watching, I cried. Every rewatch later, I laugh. And all because of Sebastian.
20:50 this is why i actually like filler episodes kn anime just for character interactions like im too nosey
The door joke made me laugh way more than it likely should of
OMG OMG OMG IT IS BACK
It's just barely been two weeks
Aaaaaaand....then there were none. Agatha Christie too??????? Sir Doyle AND Agatha Christie!!!

OH MY GOD! THANK YOU SO MUCH! IVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG!! ❤❤❤❤❤
YESSSSSS THIS IS MY FAVOURITE ARC IM SO GLAD U DID THIS DANNY!
19:34 common dude, he’s a Phantomhive servant!! Of course he’s gonna be special 😂
