They should've just made a Kyoshi show. You can tell how dark and gritty they wanted to make this show, and they easily could have if they simply chose a different, more adult, avatar to focus on

I think one of my peeves with Netflix, is constantly trying to turn animation into live action needlessly. The original story is fine the way it is, it's better to just tell a different story in the same universe so that it can stand on its own feet. So telling a story about a different avatar like kyoshi would absolutely be better.

this sokka seems so calm and it’s weirding me out so much. like in that first scene, sokka should be freaking out, frantically reaching for the canoe with his spear, barely avoiding taking an icy cold dip, and eventually pleading with katara to save their canoe with her “freaky water magic”, but (no offense to the actor) this sokkas just like. “damn. we could totally die right now… that’s crazy.” like what?

    • @ericanight8359
      @ericanight8359 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +59

That would have been far better. Sokka doing his whole dramatic panic thing and then trying to get Katara to help with her bending. Ig they could have had her start trying to pull it calmly but Sokka keeps running his mouth and they start fighting. Finally Katara screams something at him kinda like she did in the animation and tries to aggressively yank her arms back sending the canoe flying and as her arms fly back towards the iceberg you can see a crack from starting at the edge of the ice where they're standing and just following the path made by her arms towards Aang's iceberg causing then large release of air. Katara nearly being blasted into the water and Sokka having to scramble to catch her and cover her with his body while holding a weapon out in front of them.

Credit where credit is due, that was a nice detail added in.
And in the original cartoon it makes sense why Zuko was convinced of the Avatar still being out there as an Air Nomad, as he says to Iroh in episode 1, “The Fire Sages tell us that the Avatar is the last airbender! (i.e., they ascertain he hasn't been been reborn that he was killed in the initial assault on the Temples)” and... cut to episode 3 wherein we see that, yes, the Fire Sages would've been alerted as to some Avatar activity going on, that they died or else went into the Avatar State.

Personally, on the contrary, I didn't really like the fact that the creators immediately threw flashbacks in our faces. We don't learn about what happened with Aang in the course of the story, which is smarter in my opinion. And that's a problem I've noticed throughout the series, it likes to explain everything meticulously. I understand that maybe they wanted to show everything in more detail, but it wasn't necessary. Unlike the life action, the original talked to the viewer as an intelligent interlocutor, although the show was for children

    • @loganleroy8622

The thing is they do have the capability to do that. They kept teasing like we were going to get Zuko's flashback until it finally shows up in Ep 6. They also grabbed a bunch of ideas from Books 2 and 3 and threw them into Book 1. So hopefully that means they can spend more time in Book 2 to really set up the stakes.

I feel like the reason they go this tell instead of show route is because it’s on Netflix. Since Netflix has such a strict 8-10 episode limit for their seasons, I feel like this is probably the best the show could do at giving us so much lore for how much time they have. I also would guess they took parts from books 2 and 3 because they’re not sure if they’ll be renewed for another season, so they want to get in some fan favorite plot points or make sure no plots are left open in case the show ends up as only 1 season

Love how they're willing to burn someone to a crisp on screen but won't let a kid make a childish decision to runaway that, optically, led to the destruction of his people and 100 years of war. Like, kid flew somewhere to clear his head and had an accident on his way back. Also, it high key feels like these kids are journeying together because they've got not choice or simply because it's their duty; there is no emotional connection between any of them. Finally, the amount of exposition via dialogue was making my blood boil. For instance, every line Gran Gran has serves to tell the characters things the audience already knows in the most straightforward and campy way possible. The only subtle thing in this entire episode was the reference to Katara's mother and that wasn't even that subtle.

You gotta keep in mind this live action isn’t canon, because it isn’t pretending to be the original 1:1. It’s similar to the original but not identical which is good, cz nothing couldn’t beat the cartoon and anything live action would always fall short in comparison.

"There's no reason to care about any of these kids." THIS. That first meeting of the trio was so bungled. We loved sexist!Sokka because we wanted to see him knocked down a few pegs as that kicks off him learning that some cultural ideals he grew up with aren't good and that he as a person can grow for the better. We also don't get to see him trying to balance wanting to protect Katara and the realization that she's going to be able to protect herself. We also fell in love with his wisecracking nature. Katara is such a caring person but is also an understandable ball of rage brought on from her experiences/trauma and just being a teen girl. And then Aang getting the literal world both dropped on him and pulled from under him with having to admit HE is the avatar and that HIS people are dead. To have the live action characters be so FLAT in personality and delivery is infuriating. I agree that it's not the kids' fault, it's the director's. The intro to your characters is such a pivotal moment and the cartoon delivered.

As a huge fan of the animated series, and as an industry pro in the film, i look at it as "ok... why did they make these changes? does it make sense? does it feel like its still following the main plot?" Because they were only given 8 episodes to do season 1, that is originally 20 episodes. I dont agree with some of the changes. I do wish somethings stayed, but i do understand why they had to do it because some stuff just wont translate well in live action. But i do think they can fix a lot of things people had problems with by adjusting dialogue, and we can live with that. I also gave it a 7/10. And im not saying this as someone who worked on one of the episodes, but as a person who loves Avatar, especially since it was a big portion of my childhood.

@@goatcheesee I understand that sentiment, if I see a trailer of a movie and I don't like it I won't watch it. But to be honest, for this show I was excited to see the changes they made into the story because adapting the cartoon shot for shot simply wouldn't work and gives the cash grab impression. There are some things in this show I don't like but heck, even the cartoon had some problems in Book 1. What I don't really agree with is seeing people hate on a change because "that's not what happened on the animated show". I won't give u spoilers in case you watch the show but there's a certain character that was my favourite in the OG which has such a fun and quirky personality but in the show it's so much different. You have every right to like or dislike the changes they made but I just don't agree with hating on something because it's not like the original show. That's also what most of the critiques I've seen. People who criticize plot points or characters which are different from the show. Instead of judging the changes because on the impact it had in the Netflix version, they see it as bad just because it's now how it happened in the original. And you might say "If the original was so good why change it" which I must agree but then we come back to the shot for shot remakes which wouldn't translate well to live action format. So, ultimately, for this show to work, it needed to be a retelling of the animated show. Have the characters, locations and major plot points and get to the same ending point (North Pole). Just to really clarify, there are some things in this version that I really don't like because I think they could've been made better, not just because they are not like the original show. For example, Gran Gran, Yue, Katara to an extent. Just one more things which is, I don't feel like you watching this series will your nostalgia, only if you really hate it which I doubt because this series is not bad, not great either.

Which, I can understand that decision, but it also changes Katara's character as she reacts so violently to any sort of misogynistic prejudices against her

this is a very small, stupid detail to focus on, but I feel like the symbol for fire on the thing with all four elements that grangran expo dumps on should be like torn, smudged, or burnt. this isn’t important but I feel like it would be a cool detail that someone got so angry and distraught over what happened that they tried to destroy all symbols of the fire nation from the village, and I think it would add more depth to the environment as a “war torn village barely holding on” than just proudly displaying the symbol of the guys who absolutely ravaged a majority of your population.

You have a lot of the same feeling as I do. The characters costume designs feel yassified and cosplay like. While the dialogue/conversation feels like the characters are reading their lines and just waiting for their cast member to finish before delivering theirs. They don’t feel like they are embodying their role and it comes off flat/lifeless. I have another gripe but I don’t want to start a war in the comments. However, I do think they did a good job considering other live adaptations pre One Piece live adaptation.

My theory is the storm was actually caused by the invasion - the sudden burst of intense heat from all the comet-powered firebenders up at high altitude caused a vacuum effect which disrupted the nearby weather systems. Cold air above the nearby ocean all started rushing in to fill the void, resulting in violent winds, lighting, etc. That sudden storm is what brought down Appa and Aang.

The other day, I watched a trailer to the movie Borderlands, and they had some wacky costumes, but they all looked lived in, and I thought... Netflix should take notes.
