Been doing Bokksu for a few months. Got the Sakura, Birthday(tons of traditional flavors), and the Citrus. Lots of really great impossible to get items. Always some sort of beverage, the black sesame latte was fantastic. There's a lot of savory and sweet snacks and a lot of flavors that are specific to Japan and it all comes directly from Japan(which takes awhile with the new japan post issues). Highly, highly recommend.
Hey guys, thank you very much for making this video in support of Little Tokyo! Many of the stores there are very sentimental to us and we're thankful for your support of the community!
As a native of LA and an outright nerd of Japanese culture - I GOT to say - you guys did a standup job representing Little Tokyo in 2020 here. If anyone finds themselves in Downtown Los Angeles - DEFINITELY make time for a trip to our Little Tokyo! You will NOT be disappointed in all of the fun and food there - and trust me, you will leave it feeling very full! XD Great content as always guys - keep up the awesome!
This place has changed a lot since I first came to LA. Cool stuff like Yaohan plaza, bookstores, video game place. So many memories from 90s. Being in Little Tokyo makes me feel like I am in Little Tokyo in Downtown LA
Oh my gosh, love you guys! My favorite J-Town food are the Imagawayaki pancakes filled with red beans. As a kid, I loved watching the cook flip them in the window. The store is still there, in JV Plaza. Also, Fugetsu-Do, the pink mochi/manju are bomb! Some great memories made in Little Tokyo!
Just wanted to add, fresh farmed unagi kabayaki is one of my favs, but if you can get it , go for the fresh, wild Japanese unagi kabayaki. It's numbers are going down just like their native people. It's a vanishing treasure. You guys, David, Andrew, and Ryan all have different viewpoints which changes things up. It's like that inside outside game that Jeremy Lin and Tyson Chandler were just getting started on.
That's why I love L.A. because there's so much diversity with the food. You could basically find anything you want to eat. Just don't like the traffic haha and I'm only 20 mins away. But with regular traffic in how it was..i would say 45mins to an hour gee granola bars! Need to go back to J-Town!
I hate watching your flicks after dinner. I'm doing work, now I'm going to get food. I've put on like 10kg since starting to watching your channel! Damn you. Keep up the good work boys.
This is showing my age but I used to go with my Mom to Japanese Deer Park back in the day! It closed down a loooong time ago but I never forgot. I think that China Town and Japan Town will never go away. There's a vibrant Asian Community and therefore, it will stay there for as long as the community allows.
Correction...mochi are still made by hand all over Japan. Now if you go to buy mochi at the convenience stores, then yes they are factory made. The prices of all the food you ate are rip-off:)
I haven’t been to Little Tokyo, but definitely will go after COVID is over. My favorite Japanese food is ramen because of the endless styles of ramen 🍜 .
unagi (eel) is def my fav japanese food, or maybe shrimp tempura if it's cooked well. unagi isn't hard to mess up, but even if it is, it'll still taste delicious. having it plain on its own brings out its sweet, natural flavors unique to itself. but once combined with the sauce, omg. a bite of heaven. it's so tender and the sauce gives it a smokey flavor. it can be hard to find a good shrimp tempura, but if you do, it almost comes to par with unagi. the first bite is through the crispy panko and then the soft shrimp hits. the difference in texture plays a symphony in your mouth and the sweet flavor of the shrimp accompanies it.
I love this episode and miss all the food. Sad to see Little Tokyo looking so empty compared to the last time I visited. I have a recent interview up on my channel featuring Bill Watanabe, founding Executive Director of the Little Tokyo Service Center. He's responsible in large part for rebuilding Little Tokyo in the last 30 years. I will tell him and my other friend who works there about this episode so they can enjoy it too!
Katsu sando, extremely "modern" western style Japanese dish / food. Savory mixed with the sweetness of the sauce. Especially delicious if made with a really good baked bread.
Sushi. I used to like the specialty rolls but now I just like getting sashimi or nigiri to really taste and appreciate the raw fish flavor and tasting how each fish has their own unique taste. My fav is salmon but they all fire
Sushi all the way - simple yet also complex cus you need the right cuts of fish and right amount of rice for it to be good 🍣 and I can't just choose one, I'll have to add in matcha soft serve, difficult to get the flavour through but when it's right, it's goooood 🍵🍦
Super interesting take on Little Tokyo and its future. I kind of like the idea that ethnic enclaves like Little Tokyo and Chinatown can give their communities at least a little taste, the briefest glimpse, of what these cultures have to offer us, and I'm okay with them changing as successive generations move in -- the older establishments show us what Japanese culture was like, and the newer ones give us an idea of what today's Japan has become. Great work, guys.
7:20 it’s technically true but you can taste the “freshness” of the fish has been defrosted correctly and not sitting in the window or walk in for too long.
14:11 Tea Master's is good but I think Midori Matcha in Little Tokyo (specifically in the Court near the NASA Shuttle Memorial) is my preference. It's not as sweet and they have the added bonus of Hojicha Flavored Tea (which I loved.)
That blueberry white bean mochi made me so sad that I can’t find that in Minnesota! Also watching these videos late night make ya boy so hungry lol. ✌🏽👊🏽
I love to make takoyaki at home but my favourite Japenese foods are really good ramen (not the packaged kind) and expertly made sushi. Yasuda in New York and Sushi Kaji in Toronto. Both require reservations in advance. Skippa in Toronto is also great. Sitting at the bar is a must once things open up. But order take away from your favourite spots to help them survive.
My favorite Japanese snack has to be freshly made Dorayaki, the same stuff that Doraemon loves. They are basically pancakes with red bean stuffing, but the fresh ones are so, so good and are not easy to find here in the States. I've had them from a street vendor outside of Uwajimaya market in Portland, OR, and in Japantown in San Francisco. The packaged ones from 99 Ranch are far short on flavor and texture when compared to the fresh ones.
I enjoy watching you and you give the best reviews I keep torturing myself when I am hungary. I am going to Little Tokyo this weekend for sure. Always love to visit Little Tokyo
It’s more of a historic community by early Japanese immigrant farmer communities who branched out to urban areas in later decades rather than specialized “cuisine towns”, but food/entertainment is one of the more popular reasons that people go there. I recommend checking out museums and older businesses though. It’s a little sad seeing that a lot of its history has been replaced, especially in LA. San Francisco and San Jose have Japan Towns as well, and they’re still a bit more authentic.
Thank you for the introduction of Japanese food culture in detail🗼Most Japanese are not good at spicy food, except for wasabi, so we don’t have jalapeño takoyaki in Japan. It’s kind of a mix of Japanese food and many other countries’ food cultures (like California roll), so I definitely would like to try it someday in Little Tokyo🇺🇸 Lots of love from Japan🇯🇵❤️ I always look forward to your great videos;))
IRONICALLY Little Tokyo has more visitors than ever.... but its no longer the unique novelty it once was. Japanese food and items are more accessible than ever. The SOUTH BAY area in Los Angeles has a bigger collection of Japanese Grocery stores and novelty stores than Little Tokyo.
"Shinto Buddhist!?" There's definitely Buddhist Churches . I went to Nisi Honganji when I lived out there. There's also Higasi Honganji, which I once had near-heatstroke walking around the area and took shelter in, but a. Shinto is a different religion B. There's no Shinto shrine in America to the best of my knowledge. Hiroshima and Nagasaki have some of the most decadent casual/street food. That looks frigging good. I usually ate one of the Marukai boxed meals out there. Dining out is so expensive. I actually wanted to try OrenoYakiniku. Actually because there was an incident where an elderly man who only spoke Korean fell down the stairs, and the security guard stayed with him while me and the other Japanese speaker present went around trying to find someone who could understand him. The owner (?) of OrenoYakiniku and her three year old son, actually, were the only ones that actually tried to help (they didn't speak it, but they helped us look). (And yes, the man who fell was taken care of and OK) In Japan, West=America is stronger because American army occupation. West is EuroAmerican. That's an actual word in Japanese.
Fung Bros, watch the environmental impact, that is a lot of plastics for convenience. Please use your platform for a greener distribution process. Love you guys!
Oh and before I forget! Favorite Japanese food and why? For me, it will always be Ramen. Just the sheer regional variety found in Ramen can mean nearly endless flavor combinations! I feel like Ramen in Japan is akin to Hamburgers here in America: where nothing is sacred and bending the rules is encouraged! That rebellious attitude when it comes to food is super exciting to me and the results mean insane flavor! Not to mention - as an Italian American, I have mad respect with how the Japanese tend to keep their Ramen noodles Al Dente (unless requested otherwise in some shops)! Gotta have that bite! And don't get me STARTED on Ajitsuke Tamago....The Golden Holy Grail of any good Ramen
I love and respect this channel because of the effort made to make quality content. You can see that these guys are enjoying every moment in their videos. I'm not just pining for attention either. I really love this channel. Like, a lot.
I mean, the video was fine and all that, but the title made me think this was going to be something very different. I don’t know what food crawling Little Tokyo has to do with Jtown surviving. That uni pasta looked lit af tho

Japanese food is the best and I love little Tokyo!! Need to visit again soon 💖
My favorite Japanese food is tsukamen because of the chewy springiness texture of the noodles and the amazing broth you dip it in
I wish I could tag along with the Fung Bros and eat all the delicious things.

I’m from L.A. Haven’t been to Little Tokyo in years and feeling very homesick watching this video. Fung Bro., I’m your neighbor in Renton.

Peach/mint or Hokkaido melon are amazing KitKats. You should try refrigerating them first as it can enhance the flavors

Butadon over rice - best Japanese food. Huge slices of bacon pork with sauce over rice. What is not to like about it? Yummy.
Little Tokyo, my favorite city. I also like Chinatown. And Little Saigon. ..and Koreatown. Best eats in all LA.
