    Old school auto instrument guy here, NEVER NEVER NEVER, connect any of these thermal gauges directly to ground. They operate on 5 volts NOT 12, at "Full" or "High" the resistance is 10 ohms through to Earth. If you run the gauge directly to Earth, the full 5 volts runs through the heating winding in the gauge and in just a few seconds it's curtains for the gauge. If you perform this test, use a 10 OHM resistor in line from earth to the gauge. NEVER NEVER NEVER connect the gauge directly to earth !

    Great content, thanks for this video! My gauge was stuck all the way to the right past full. I dropped the tank and replaced the sending unit yesterday but my gauge is still stuck. I'm guessing I should check the fuse next? Maybe test the gauge itself somehow? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Car is a 68 firebird. Thanks!

      Check the wire make sure it’s not short to ground because if it’s ground out somewhere along the way it’ll cause your gauge to read full

    I have a 71 Chevelle
    I pulled the fuel tank and replaced the sending/float unit because the gauge would stick on fuel.
    I noticed that the stop tabs for fuel and empty were bent off to the side.
    When I pushed the float all the way up past the fuel tab it would stick there.
    So when I installed the new sending unit I did not bend the tabs.
    Now when the tank is full the gauge read between 3/4 and 1/2.
    Once the fuel gets down between 3/4 and 1/2 then the gauge works.
    Any ideas on what’s wrong?

      I have a 1980 CJ5 with the fuel gauge and temp gauge inside the speedo cluster. When I turn my key, the gauge reads from below E to at E, and does not go past it. Any suggestions? I know I dropped a new sending unit in there, without checking the calibration. The temp gauge still works. The tank is a poly. Plus I will check the grounding wire on the sending unit.

    • @AutoRepairTips757
      @AutoRepairTips757  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you apply a ground the gauge goes from empty to full, so I would ohm the wire to a ground on the car and see if it moves if it does then the wire is touching a ground somewhere if it’s ok then check your gauge
