This is hands down THE best instructional on Fuel Gauge and Sender issues on TH-cam. I've watched dozens that don't get anywhere near the clarity and detail that this offers. This doesn't just apply to trucks but explains everything I needed to know for my Mopar gauge issues. You're a legend Kevin ... you should put out a series of instructional videos on Automotive Engineering ... there is a massive audience for it.
I really appreciate these videos. Very informative, well structured, and incredibly helpful. I was very intimidated by the idea of replacing my bad sending unit until I found this. Now I know that I can handle this job myself next weekend instead of paying a shop and waiting forever for them to get to it. These videos have made me a diehard LMC customer.
Great video and great instructional delivery - clear, concise, well structured. Can't imagine why ANYONE would have given it a thumbs-down. Thanks for taking the time to create this video - very helpful!
Just when you think everything is right...surprise! Prepping for a car show and noticed the needle on my TA's gas gauge did not move and was buried at the 4 o'clock position (past full) when the engine was started. In the off position it is in the same place. Need to pull out the old Pontiac Service Manual and review along with this video. Electrical is not my favorite problem to figure out. Sometimes I wish a BIG hammer would work...it doesn't. Thank's Kevin for another great video.
Glad to see Kevin Tetz on this video. I used to watch him on PowerNation. I have an erratic fuel gauge on my 1985 F150 in which one day it will work okay and the next day the gauge may not work. Looks like I need to check my wiring and maybe clean up the grounding point.
Thankyou! I am getting ready to take on this job myself.. I replaced my gauge cluster when we restored the truck, but never replaced the sending unit in the tank. My gauge work fine for 3 years, but now stays on 1/4 tank.
This video is helpful to me, I have a 1971 Chevrolet C-10 that I'm restoring to original and starting to see people getting their 1967-1972 Chevy/GMC trucks running again. Keep loading up and making more videos about these classic trucks, I know I'll be ordering some stuff from LMC Truck real soon. Good video 👍🇺🇸..
One more thing, the float sensor can be serviced in many cases. The arm cover should be able to come off and inside that box there can be rust or corrosion or something that obstructed sensing by the potentiometer or smooth travel of the arm. Clean it all up and try it. It might need sanding, contact cleaner, you'll see what it needs.
Hey Oz Mechanic. I have a Hyundai i20 2010 model. I took it to Hyundai for checking because I had issue with my fuel gauge reading and they concluded by saying I need to get my instrument cluster replaced, which too much for to afford. I want to know is it not possible to fix the fuel gauge reading without having to replace the cluster as they said because everything working on the cluster except incorrect fuel reading display? Your advice would be highly appreciated.
Thank you for the video! I own a 1959 Chevy Apache and I was wondering what is the best way to determine if is necessary to replace the fast tank? I know that it works and the gas pump works however the truck 🛻 it’s been sitting in the garage for over 15 years!
Caution here. If you ever so slightly turn those studs. You will break a very tiny wire. I did that. Drilled the rivets soldered a .005 wire back to the stud riveted back together works as new.
The battery testing reminded me of teaching biology students how to setup an electrophoresis chamber , where I would tell them there was an easy to remember poem that would help them with the assembly; "red to red, black to black"
I'll have to put this to the test. I've got a 72 Blazer with a misfunctioning fuel gauge. It keeps track of my fuel but only goes to just above the quarter tank mark. So quarter tank is actually full, eighth tank is actually a half tank etc. I've replaced the sending unit, the gauge, the wiring, and the grounds that I can find. The only thing left seems to be the printed circuit board.
I had a question on an older video but the comments were turned off…anyways…it was about the bumper impact strip. All I want to know is if it’s really necessary to put one on? Or if I can buy a bumper w/o the impact strip holes for a more smooth look.
I'm looking to pull my tach into the place of my fuel gauge and need an aftermarket fuel gauge for under dash mount and the wiring color cost to rewire it from the wiring harness to aftermarket gauge.
Could this testing procedure be used to test the other gauges as well? My temp gauge and amp meter gauge are not working. I'd like to be able to test them before replacing them, or the circuit board.
A good learning,..but I can't seem to get my brand new meter to go to full with the sensor disconnected and 12v applied to the ignition terminal. With ground to ground, sensor to sensor, and ignition 12v to ignition terminal my needle barely moves and rests just at 'E'. I've measured 70 ohms with two different meters from ground at tank to sensor on tank. I measured 70 ohms at gauge location from sensor lead to ground under dash. What do I need to do??
I have a 71 Chevelle I pulled the fuel tank and replaced the sending/float unit because the gauge would stick on fuel and drop and start reading at some point. I just never knew when it was going to drop and start reading. I noticed that the stop tabs for full and empty were bent off to the side. When I pushed the float all the way up past the full tab it would stick there. So when I installed the new sending unit I did not bend the tabs. Now when the tank is full the gauge read between 3/4 and 1/2. Once the fuel gets down between 3/4 and 1/2 then the gauge works. Any ideas on what’s wrong?
I've never seen a gauge re-calibration video. The 70's Chevy gauges can be re-calibrated. Maybe others, I don't know. Have you ever had an old Chevy and the fuel gauge "worked" but didn't show the correct fuel level? The needle never goes to full or goes past full. Or when it's empty the needle is sitting on a quarter tank. Like the man said three times, "It's a range. Not an exact measurement." So how do you get the gauge to jive with the range of the sending unit? How can you custimize your fuel gauges displayed reference points? The hard part is get the lense off and the sending unit out.
Question, my nephew is trying to fix the fuel sending unit in an old car. The wire that is inside the tank is real nasty looking, the insulation is rotted off the copper wire. Can anyone tell me what kind of wire will he need to get to replace the rotted wire? Guess it'll be a wire that will ok to be in contact with gasoline.
if you use a reed switch sender you dont need all stuff only moving part is floating magnet 33ohms full 244 empty U S A standard 5 hole munting use same gauge
So..2 years ago, I asked a mechanic to replace my 1998 Dodge Caravan 2.4L fuel filter that was changed 22 years ago. When he did it he cracked the fuel pump connectors and it leaked gas. I paid for the part and he did labor free. Bosch. The gauge read low. Still had 5 gallons left when gauge was at E. He replaced it and same level issue. I said forget it and was same for 2 years and 2 months. The sensor started making the fuel gauge needle go down and the chime came on with the gas tank idiot light coming on. I GOOGLED it and saw complaints like this and saw might be caused by sulfur in gas tarnishing the metal on the sensor metal.. I put in 2 bottles of Techron plus and for a time chime was lot less but now is awful!. So far I can't find what metal the sensor windings are made of for BOSCH. I see 2 brands, one using gold (Delphi) and other silver palladium. THEN... I see ranges of 70 to 1050 OHMS for replacement pumps (ON Rock Auto info on their pump assortments. and then I see 33 to 240 for Bosch and American makes. I was about to put a cheat resistor in the harness to make it so I could stop the low level CHIME stop. BUT now I don't know what value to put in. I was going to put in a 680 or 750 OHM but when I saw this new range. I put a temp hold on this cheat. The gauge anti- slosh makes the needle move slower but the chime comes on right away. I think the float needle is getting to a dead high OHM spot on the sensor. I found out a couple weeks ago that Bosch went to a lifetime warranty.. but there are qualifiers and so I will see what push back I get from Bosch.
"Normally, wiring issue are high on the difficulty meter, but If you isolate the fuel system by itself, it's not that difficult" Me looking at the wiring diagram and seeing all the common/shared circuits... o.O XD!!!
Mine doesn’t work due to the sending unit located in the tank, reset trip odometer and seek fuel before it reaches 300km Fuel guage always shows 1/2 full
My only criticism is I need close up video of how he connects the wires to the sending unit and guage. My 51 year old eyes can't see that far away. This will take the guesswork out of it.

Hello, the REQD column indicates how many of a respective part a truck would need to be complete. In your case the sun visors are sold individually, you would need 2 to complete the truck.
Does Anyone can help me ? I have a chevy van from 6,2 diesel from 1983 , my problem is that when i turn the key for starting my van , the gauge of the coolant température , go very kwickly at the maximum, at the top , the engine is still cold , does anyone got an idea to solv the problem
Hey Kevin. Why don't you just test the send unit at the pump and thus verify the entire circuit or not them u could go back and start at the battery. Or you could just work backwards.
@Carlos Roque yes there are lots of way to test the pump. You could test the resistance. You could unplug it and give it a ground and power it up with 12v. The easiest way to give it a very basic test is to have someone cycle the key from off to on a few times and while the do that wack the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallet. Preferably right under the pump. You can tell where the pump is by looking for a maybe 6 to 8" diameter circle in the bottom of the tank. Usually if the pump is the issue it will kick on. But only for about 2 seconds. To prime the line and once the car starts it will come back on.
The old trucks do not have electric fuel pumps. They use a mechanical pump mounted to the block. If you’ve upgraded to an electric pump (usually with a pressure regulator for a carburetor use) then you’d be able to diagnose differently.
Poorly thought out video. There is a way to determine if your sending unit is bad without having to pull the sending unit and doing the 0-50-100 test. Also need to do one with dual tanks.
