Loved your video! I am kind of the same (guitar hunter here in germany). Last week, I put up an ad, searching for a 1980-86 Les Paul Custom (winered). My dream guitar...a 1960 ES345...came my way a few years ago. Traded a 60's hot rod and a few guns for it which equaled about a 1/4 it's worth in actual cash I had spent on those items. I was 3rd owner. Thought I was set! But then found I never played it much, even though it played and sounded great, it was just to fragile to play out anywhere and risk getting broke or worse, stolen. So it became a couch guitar, and even then I had to be careful of the dreaded Gibson headstock break. Finally it spent more time in it's case than being played, so after about 2 years of owning it, I talked myself into letting it go. Same LKQ guitars were being advertised in the close to $20k range, but not moving and setting on ebay and reverb for months...So I set my price a few K lower than the rest and sold it in 26 hours. A few weeks later it popped up on reverb as high priced as the others and was still there months later. Eventually it must have sold because the listing was gone. Now...I am very glad I had the chance to own it, but don't really miss it as the reality is those fragile vintage guitars are an easy way to lose your investment with just one mishap. That may be ok for those that can afford it, but the average working guy like me, would wipe him out. Now I have a half a dozen ES clones and they work fine for me without the worries...but still, I have to smile when I think of that guitar...

The tone and volume pots have a nice long taper to them instead of the usual chinese ones that feel like they are full off or full on with no middle ground. They sell out quick and reappear about every 5 weeks when another run comes in. I must say as a guitar collector and a pro player ,, that dude was hard to watch and listen to. He is full of himself and the best part was the drive not the actual video of the dude and his bullshit!! Just how many times did he say "Just look at those frets!!" come on !! $20K is retail on that that guitar it was not that clean.. Cool as hell looking but, really no bargain .. Save up and buy a 50's Tele brother > It will look good on ya.
He's also the type of guy who would probably take it if you pulled out 120, $100 dollar bills and laid it out on the table, and said, "my final offer", but only after pulling the neck and pick guard to inspect. And let him stare at the cash for a while.
What do you mean by not to clean. For 60 years old that's in pretty great shape especially compared to other strats that are trashed and their owners are asking 35 for them. And dont player nowadays like a vintage beatup look?
So this video randomly came up after I watched a video about an amp I have looking for mods, and it opens about a block from my old house. Weird! Shout out to Harrisonburg!
Good thing u walked away. IMO that guitar is not worth $20K. He kept trying 2 convince u of the minimal wear, but whoever owned it b4 him played it plenty. Most collectors probably want a guitar in better condition. If ur buying 2 play it then the worn patina may add something to the value. Check this link americanvintageguitar.com/1960-fender-stratocaster/ This 1960 Stratocaster may fetch $20K.
I buy & sell vintage Amplifiers ,Preamps ,Turntables and Speakers, the biggest purchase ive made in 27 years of trading was $35,000 for a pair of Mcintosh Tube monoblocks that cost $1,400 each when new,it took me 3 years to sell the amps for $50,000 and i was lucky to get that ,a profit of $5k per year is way to low,if you would have spent a dime over $11,000 on this Start youd of ate anything over $14k,good call walking away from this one.
I think it was a bit odd how defensive he was about the guitar. I'm selling a guitar right now and I'm telling buyers everything that's wrong with it and even the things I don't like about it personally.
Hey Jeremy, that was a cool axe. My cousin has my aunts 64 fender mustung. All original parts. Sounds great!!! I see instruments as an investment. If I can't make money back on an investment because it's too expensive, or I'm not gigging then I don't need that instrument, or hardware that goes with that instrument.
Besides the badass guitar, I sure miss VA. Charlottesville, culpeper, etc... came across so many great guitars. Not so much in Seattle, but headed back soon. Sweet sweet fender
Seen two of your videos and both at some point you're very close to shedding tears. I guess guitars really make you emotional(?) Paying 20k for a strat is silly when you're going to flip it, that's pretty close to the highest retail they are going for. Keeping a 20k strat is even sillier and I love my strat!
This envy of things from the past make no sense! They make better instruments today then they ever did in 1960, and the price of an instrument that I would never gig with is pure nonsense
Remember when vintage insturments were just called used ? Lol Some are very cool indeed tho , but as you say, i wouldnt want to risk losing that kind of investment giging with one
@@sunburststrats Anyone that has seen pictures and read descriptions of Leo Fender's operation in the 50's and 60's will know just how crude the workshops were and how little resources he had. The guitars varied in construction at least year by year if not by every six months or so depending on what parts Leo could scrape together. In addition to that Leo was always trying out new tweaks. I'd say that Fender today has far greater control over quality and repeatability. All the variables to building a guitar are better understood today, including the weird little wrinkles introduced to those original instruments. So that leaves some indefinable handcrafted magic that soaked in to those old instruments at the point of some old masters whittling knife? Or they are better just because they were made back then? Sorry I just don't buy it. That guitar would only be worth $20,000 to me if I knew I could immediately turn around and sell it for $25,000 or more. As a guitar to play I wouldn't pay more than $1,000 for it. Incidentally back in the 1950's Leo's guitars were far from cheap. Adjusted for inflation you would be paying around $2,300 for a Strat back then.

This guy wants to sell it to himself!!! Good luck on this one. There was a 1960 Strat on Reverb for $18,500.👍🎸😎 Not too many people with that kind of change!
Honestly, did you really think it would be much less than $20K? If its right and that's a big if, 60 strats are in that range. Sounds you were shocked it was 20k. A quick Reverb search of ones on the market and sold recently shows 20K isn't crazy if its a nice one and you say it is.

Robert Stuart it was my patronus. #pugtronus
Cool guitar. Full retail on price though. Good to walk away. Damn good editing!
Thanks, Matt. I love your stuff. $20k is insane. I offered him what I thought was fair, but he won't come off price at all.
M R well said
@@mragunathan1627 high end buyers dont like to see the neck get ripped off the guitar, besides this 60 could have very well had nothing written at all on the end of the neck.(happened to my pal after i pleaded for him to not rip the neck off his original owner 60) i just pull the pickguard and thats enough to know if its pretty well straight up. a date on the end of a neck doesnt have much to do with the originality of 99 percent of the guitar
I thought James Taylor played acoustic.
Your both incorrect. Its Robert Duvall!
my very first thought
Yeah, if James smoked meth...
What is the song title of what you played arond 8:00? Sounds awesome BTW
Something I wrote years ago. Thanks!
Love how the guy thinks “hand wired” is significant. Oooooh!
You produce a great, honest video. Very entertaining. Thanks.
I'm with you, Tony is a lot to deal with. I wanted to see it in real life and check it out. Thanks for watching, I want to find a 50's tele too.
@@JeremySheppard he probably holds on to it pretending he might sell because it's the only way he can get people to visit him.
What do you mean by not to clean. For 60 years old that's in pretty great shape especially compared to other strats that are trashed and their owners are asking 35 for them. And dont player nowadays like a vintage beatup look?
My musicmaster was built on the same month and year as this strat probably crossed paths at one point in the factory lol
Those are two beautiful guitars. Thank you for sharing them.
So this video randomly came up after I watched a video about an amp I have looking for mods, and it opens about a block from my old house. Weird! Shout out to Harrisonburg!
cavedour whaaaaaat?!? Email me and let’s talk! Jeremy@jeremysheppard.com
What's the song, and who plays it @ 11:38 in this video? I'm digging it, and want to know if I can download it somewhere.
Yeah... THAT one could probably pull $20K. Not the one in this video though.
Can someone tell me the name of the tune at 11:40?
I love your disposition and your dedication to music bro!
Just found a Harmony Opus. Interested? Local yokels at the 50 year old music store in my medium size Ohio city.....had no clue.
Correction: the only thing 1959 about SRV's Strat were the pickups and the pots; it was a '63 body w/a '62 neck.
Yep
I buy & sell vintage Amplifiers ,Preamps ,Turntables and Speakers, the biggest purchase ive made in 27 years of trading was $35,000 for a pair of Mcintosh Tube monoblocks that cost $1,400 each when new,it took me 3 years to sell the amps for $50,000 and i was lucky to get that ,a profit of $5k per year is way to low,if you would have spent a dime over $11,000 on this Start youd of ate anything over $14k,good call walking away from this one.
Tele All The Way!!! Remember You Make The Guitar at whatever price point!!! And you've got your priorities in the right order!
Those things are magical, I got a '61 that's how I know, I think Leo had some kind of magic wand:)
I think it was a bit odd how defensive he was about the guitar. I'm selling a guitar right now and I'm telling buyers everything that's wrong with it and even the things I don't like about it personally.
Good point!
So how much did it cost you ? Why is it hardly ever being told ?
Besides the badass guitar, I sure miss VA. Charlottesville, culpeper, etc... came across so many great guitars. Not so much in Seattle, but headed back soon. Sweet sweet fender
Sweet sound... seems like a nice guy that had it...
You're a really good & solid guy Jeremy. Your character has most definitely won me over. God bless brother.
I didn't know if he was going to hand it to you.
Great video and story thank you. I've had a few journeys like that myself recently... So glad you didn't pay $20000...
Do you think 20k is a lot for a 60 strat?
Is there something wrong with my 80’s strat?
I don't know what guitar this cat is lookin at but the finish on the for sale strat has some wear and scuffin on it....cool guitar but we all can see
see that screw hole right here on the back? this is where you're getting screwed.
“LOOK AT IT”! Look at it!
He should be selling used Cadillacs!
With a light blue lecturer suite and white shoes!
Great video and an pretty awesome Strat!
This envy of things from the past make no sense! They make better instruments today then they ever did in 1960, and the price of an instrument that I would never gig with is pure nonsense
Remember when vintage insturments were just called used ? Lol
Some are very cool indeed tho , but as you say, i wouldnt want to risk losing that kind of investment giging with one
Very debatable that any guitars are made better today.
Adjusted for inflation you would be paying around $2,300 for a Strat back then.
sunburststrats They do make guitars that are really good today just got a find them I have the tires built by the custom shop of Gibson and Fender and they are really good guitars but you got to check them out before your Byam
Philip Howard
The debate wasn’t if they made good guitars today, it’s was that they build them better today.
I still disagree.
good job sir,i gave you my deepest restpect and salute.your such ag good guy
He's a right story teller ..just give him the damn guitar baldy
he almost hit the headstock on his amp and on the piano at the beginning lol
Hey at least you got to hang out with James Taylor.
Well I cant afford 20k, but I can afford a jeff beck fender strat and that's my vintage
Did you sell it yet ????
Trevor Graham Welch not yet. Want it?
Ya gotta have the finances to go retro. I bought one. Just one.... He was desperate. It was under 8k.... Most i have spent. Great video!! He was asking way too much...
Wish we could have heard it through a good amp... is that a Fender FARTomatic or ?
You didnt notice the "sorry about the shitty mic" statement?
A decent amp? That fender amp is a lil monster. This was shitty sound on the recording side if things. Not the signal side of things.
This guy wants to sell it to himself!!! Good luck on this one. There was a 1960 Strat on Reverb for $18,500.👍🎸😎 Not too many people with that kind of change!
I don't know how you sat with that guy for so long! I had to skip ahead. Props!
There was SO much footage I didn't use, this is about 1/3 of it.
Nice video of driving over Afton Mountain !
I was born in 1960 how much is it ????
Trevor Graham Welch I think he was asking $20,000. When it was new it was and I’m guessing because I wasn’t born yet. A couple hundred maybe??
He reminds me of one of Sasha Baron Cohen's characters from Who is America.
guy saunders hahahah
do you still have this guitar?
I didn’t buy it but Mario still has it.
Don't want the guitar? Ok, how about some aluminum siding for your house. Lol
Did you find a seller yet? Did you call Norms rare guitars?
Only problem is Norm is not gonna give that guy 20gs for it.
Norm probably wouldn't even buy it. The vintage high dollar stuff has to be 100% straight for him to consider.
Jeremy that's beautiful; but price is right, wish you luck.
Hmm hmm hmm hmm, red alert. You did well Jeremy.
Honestly, did you really think it would be much less than $20K? If its right and that's a big if, 60 strats are in that range. Sounds you were shocked it was 20k. A quick Reverb search of ones on the market and sold recently shows 20K isn't crazy if its a nice one and you say it is.
was thinking that same thing....you had to know before you got there this was going to be a lot of cabbage
