  • I found an original Stratocaster from 1960 in rural Virginia last week.
This guitar belongs to the second owner. It came from Germany in the mid 80's and has stayed with Mario for years.
Check out his story and learn about amazing old Strats.

I can sell my second car, enjoy the instrument for x years, sell the instrument, then buy a more modern model of the car i sold. LOL
on the other hand i bought a low mileage - stored in the garage for years - Land Cruiser 100 in 2008, they were still worth a lot back then as the LC 200 had just come out. now my 61 Strat is worth more than my LC100 lol but i still love my LC

Great vid man... I always wanted a early 60’s slab board Strat... so I decided to make the closest thing and found a prime example MIJ Strat and took it down to bare wood and refinished in fiesta red nitro, replaced everything with the good stuff including real celluloid mint guard, and it been aging beautifully... I absolutely love that guitar and will never let it go.

I think you did well by not getting it. Did he originally tell you he was the 2nd owner in '72? He can't recall if he got it in '84, 85, or 86; but he should know when he left Germany. If it stayed in its case since '96, was it stored upright? Did you ever see the photos of dates when the neck was removed? Any chance those photos would be from the other strat? He was very adamant about pushing that guitar on you instead letting the guitar sell itself. Mario might be legit, but from the video, I had some red flags.

@Christopher Crepon That's a good question. I don't know. I think there are a lot of mysteries and superstitions around how guitars age. Strings on, strings off, you'll find people who swear one way or the other. In my opinion, the truth is somewhere in between.

An older man contacted me and offered me his 1976 Les Paul Custom winered (all original) - and all he asked was $900. Man, I drove 700km from northern to middle germany that day - boy was that worth it! Now I have it and I still cant believe my luck! It was the most uninspiring guitar I’ve ever owned.

My dream guitar...a 1960 ES345...came my way a few years ago. Traded a 60's hot rod and a few guns for it which equaled about a 1/4 it's worth in actual cash I had spent on those items. I was 3rd owner. Thought I was set! But then found I never played it much, even though it played and sounded great, it was just to fragile to play out anywhere and risk getting broke or worse, stolen. So it became a couch guitar, and even then I had to be careful of the dreaded Gibson headstock break. Finally it spent more time in it's case than being played, so after about 2 years of owning it, I talked myself into letting it go. Same LKQ guitars were being advertised in the close to $20k range, but not moving and setting on ebay and reverb for months...So I set my price a few K lower than the rest and sold it in 26 hours. A few weeks later it popped up on reverb as high priced as the others and was still there months later. Eventually it must have sold because the listing was gone. Now...I am very glad I had the chance to own it, but don't really miss it as the reality is those fragile vintage guitars are an easy way to lose your investment with just one mishap. That may be ok for those that can afford it, but the average working guy like me, would wipe him out. Now I have a half a dozen ES clones and they work fine for me without the worries...but still, I have to smile when I think of that guitar...

@@tonym7051 Most are Epiphone...from a dot studio to Sheraton 2's...but, i recently bought a translucent red Firefly off of amazon and the fit/finish was so good...bought another blueburst that arrived today. Put a bigsby clone on the red one with roller bridge and it stays in tune as well as any other i have had with bigsby. Decent tuners, bone nut, frets have been leveled but they really need to be crowned and polished better. Pickups are a little hot at 11k ohms, but sound good. The tone and volume pots have a nice long taper to them instead of the usual chinese ones that feel like they are full off or full on with no middle ground. Triple binding on the body, bound neck...intonation was spot on on the red one and just a few cents off on the blue. Either one will stand up with the Epi's and all for the grand price of $139.90 delivered to my door with Prime shipping. Unbelievable guitars for that money. They sell out quick and reappear about every 5 weeks when another run comes in. The older models had gibson ears, the new run has a little more pointy Ibanez style, but not quite as pointy...kind of in between the two. 4 colors is all they offer and the only guitar they offer...even comes with some pretty nice case candy. Check them out.

I just don't get the purchase of any guitar in the range of 20 grand. I know, I know, I will catch hell for this, but... essentially, a Strat is a Strat is a Strat. 1400 bucks, gets you your very own American today. Seen two of your videos and both at some point you're very close to shedding tears. I guess guitars really make you emotional(?) Paying 20k for a strat is silly when you're going to flip it, that's pretty close to the highest retail they are going for. Keeping a 20k strat is even sillier and I love my strat!

Had a father in law that had a guitar under a couch and next to the couch was a tweed amp. Come to find out that he worked at a music store in 1957 and bought a Telecaster with case and amp. He had no idea what he had. I'm guessing that it's still in the case under his couch.

If I can't make money back on an investment because it's too expensive, or I'm not gigging then I don't need that instrument, or hardware that goes with that instrument.

Jeremy, thanks for the video. Dude, trying to sell your car to buy a guitar, why not, but the spare one not the main one ! I understand that it's a great guitar, so ARE others... A 2001 strat with Bareknuckle pick ups will amaze you, spending 20 grand will harm you forever. Same for a tele ! Get over it, leave him his 20 000 guitar with that hole at the back....This is a get away guitar...

Good thing u walked away. IMO that guitar is not worth $20K. He kept trying 2 convince u of the minimal wear, but whoever owned it b4 him played it plenty. Most collectors probably want a guitar in better condition. If ur buying 2 play it then the worn patina may add something to the value. Check this link americanvintageguitar.com/1960-fender-stratocaster/ This 1960 Stratocaster may fetch $20K.

He is full of himself and the best part was the drive not the actual video of the dude and his bullshit!! Just how many times did he say "Just look at those frets!!" come on !! $20K is retail on that that guitar it was not that clean.. Cool as hell looking but, really no bargain .. I would like to say that, I don't understand guitar collecting. I like to play guitars. Now I'm more play songs on the guitar then try to tell people I am a guitarist. But my lack of understanding does not take away from my belief that if something makes somebody happy, and without hurting anybody then I'm happy for them as well even if I don't get it. I'm thinking a guitar is only supposed to be is worth to the owner. I I would honestly say that you could have a guitar made to whatever specs you want with every kind of would you want and it will play better sound better then anything they made back in the fifties and sixties. Tolerances will be better. The pickups if you know the right people can make them to any sound you want with any type of magnet you want and it will not run anywhere near $20,000. I think that particular guitar will mean more to you once it's made did anything that you could purchase hoping someone else liked it as much as you do to resell it. I am a school teacher. One of my former students I ran into him and ask him how is he doing and he said that he was a tennis shoe broker Authenticator. And he was so excited to tell me how he gets to go places take pictures and verify shoes so collectors could trade and buy them. because I've been a teacher forever I obviously did not take a big dump on his career. but he could tell that I was slightly amazed that that was a job. So I reminded him that remember when he was graduating I told him to go to Career Fairs because there are thousands of jobs out there that no one has ever heard of. so I say that to say to you, seeing the jelly on your face I could not take anything away from that as far as my wanting to see anybody happy if they're not hurting anyone else. I just don't think any old thing is worth that much money. Now if a guitar had been used by somebody that I truly admire and they had it custom-made for themselves I might try to pay an extra thousand or two to say I own a guitar by Prince, or Larry Carlton. But just an old guitar, I really wish I understood that. If for no other reason that would be one of the way that I could find joy.

Camt tell if the guy was just really excited about having someone who really understands the guitar or just wanted to sell it
