LIGHTER FLUID removes the sticky stuff so easy in seconds every time with no damage at all.
I’ve been using it for 30 years.

    • @Arnd2it

I agree, except it's cheaper to buy a quart of Naphtha at the hardware store, which is what lighter fluid is...

Arnd2it cool!! I'll look out for it.
I'm an old school graphic designer - before Macs - artboard, pmts, camera ready artwork, typesetting etc...

“E” serial # Japanese Squier guitars like this red one are the same guitars as the Japanese Fenders....some were badged Squier and some were badged Fender. 1988 was early in the Squier brand development

Loved your video. Doing the same with a Blade 1 VMI Sebring I got for free. I've never heard of them before and there is very little info online about them other than the fact that I don't think they're the same as the other Blade 1 guitars still being made now... Stripped it down to the wood and finishing with polyurethane, changing the pick guard cause the old one is cracked and warped. Going to reuse the pickups and hardware because I've heard they sound great for the cheap guitar it was back in the day. It's the first time I have ever saved a guitar and I'm excited about how it's going. Thanks for your video.

A guitar worth saving. Cool video. The converse to your story about the weirdness of the public sometimes is like in my area where a lot of guitar techs are unaware of anything past 1970 (Hipshot bridge? What are Bare Knuckle pickups?) or, worse, will do things to your guitar you didn't want or told them not to do because of whatever internet folklore they personally subscribe to. .

Clear surgical spirit BP, available from most Pharmcies. Great for cleaning your guitars with, however if used on your fret board be sure and give it a good oiling. Lemon oil or a good fret conditioner or exotic wood nourishment balm. I use an aerosol called Wood Silk it's a great all rounder, cleans and conditions but it's best to use a Microfibre cloth for the cleaning as these cloths are brilliant at getting all losee debris caused by the cleaning.

Jeremy, you posted an excellent, and informative, video; thank you.
I would like add to your list of solvents that assist in removing glue residue from surfaces. I have found that Ronsonol lighter fluid works excellently. The main ingredient in the Ronsonol is Naphtha. I have used Naphtha on nitro cellulose finishes to gently clean and remove any type of residue or crud that has built up on surfaces of guitars. However, as you point out in your video, always test any type of cleaning solution on an inconspicuous section of the item being addressed.
Thanks again for your well produced videos.

Really nice work, with a great result? It seems to have been well worth saving because it was already very well setup as to the neck being straight, intonation & frets all in great shape without you having to do anything? Unless you did it off-camera? That nut-it’s more of a replacement type of upgrade, (I realize that they’re available from the factory on some Strats-but probably not that one?). Yes about Japanese strats. I have a 1974 Mann (Ibanez) Strat copy--maple neck, cream finish--and it has all Fender hardware (big tremolo block, Alnico 4 pickups). I hardtailed it, and then tapped half of brass pipe ring into the space between the tremolo block and the wood of the body. Rings like a bell! Try it, an upgrade for about $2 that sounds like a pickup swap-out.

I have removed an increadible amount of labels and stickers. That layer of glue remains left behind is your enemy. Cleaning that up takes a lot of time. And using solvents usually only serves in rubbing around, smearing it all over. First get a heat gun. Set it to low, so you don't damage the paint. Heat up the stickers and the glue underneath becomes softer. If you peel off the stickers now, most of the glue stays on the sticker, leaving your surfaces almost clean. Especially when you rip the sticker off. How to best remove the remaining glue? Sticky tape! Put the tape on, and rip it off again. The tape will pick up the glue remains from the surface you're cleaning. But be careful around damaged or cracked paint. The final remains of glue will be minimal, and that's when you grab the solvents.

Goo Gone used to work pretty well. I think it had some naphtha in it, but they changed the formula several years ago and the stuff is pretty useless now. As has been suggested elsewhere, Ronsonol lighter fluid or similar has lots of naphtha and is kind to most guitar finishes and is great at removing goo.

Most nail polish remover ( you show a bottle ) is not acetone.. it ethyl acetate, a by product of the distillation process. It is a far less aggressive solvent than acetone.

    Ah, the Lace Sensor era...
I prefer Groove Bon's early stuff. More honest, before they sold out.

Dude! So glad you were able to remove that awfulness and document it for us. The guitar looks great! I don’t mind the silver pickup covers, but the knobs are goofy for sure. I have a ‘72 Twin myself. Great video Jeremy!

I use a Canon 6D Mark ii. My macro shots come from an 80's Lumix 50mm f4 macro lens i've adapted to canon.

Well, you get yourself all branded up your gonna run into people that see that as self defacement. You gotta be ready to deal with them. That's a neat little Japan Squire Strat.

If you wanted to stay with Lace pick-ups, I would have replaced the pick-ups with Gold lace for the sound I like…at very least Gold in Neck and middle, then maybe a hot rail in bridge..

You think that's bad, you should see drums that have been unprofessionaly modified. Sometimes it's great, other times it's terrible.

cetone got all over my hand while I was holding my Swiss Army Knife.....It left my fingerprints in the handle. I believe it would have dissolved the handle. Just a note on using Acetone
