Escher (Tumbling) Plate

- I've seen a few of these on the internet, and watched a few TH-cam videos to see how others have made them. I was really excited to try this out, and happy with the results. Some fellow TH-camrs have made this look really easy, but I found that some steps take a lot of trial and error to get it right.
In the end, I wish I had picked a lighter wood for the 3rd square, but in person there is a little more contrast than what you can see in pictures.
Inspired by M.C. Escher's works, this Tumbling plate measures 8" across, is made from Black Walnut, English Walnut and Cherry segments. It was finished with HUT's friction polish and buffed to a shine.

There were a couple of times during glue-up where the clamps formed a good representation of a geometric shape known as a TetroHaagen-dazs. You made a beautiful plate. I’m not sure I’d have the patience to get thru glue-up. 👍

wow, the gluing process was quite intense. But that's what makes this such a compelling piece. Detail is so beautiful as is a repetitive pattern to the human eye. We love and admire both so you hit a home run with this one. Congratulations and thank you for sharing.

Sorry went back and relook at the video must have missed that part that part on what angles to cut them
I assume that you figured out since then, that the best way to have combined those would have been to continue to make the circles. You started out with the three pieces and you held it together by rubber bands. Then you should’ve combine three of those which you could’ve held together, with hose clamps or bigger rubber bands and continued out until you had the final size.
oh sure... bring logic into it :) I definitely stumbled on the gluing, but I agree, this is the way to do it.
I love this. I am also new lathe owner and have a long path to pursue to reach this level. One thing about this hobby is the stressful level of money needed for proper tools. For example how much money do you have just in clamps alone?

Great work , It looks like the turning was the easy part all that cutting and glueing have you tried laying the blocks flat when clamping, only a thought.
The cutting/gluing was most definitely the hard part. Although, figuring out what shape to make it, so as to make the most out of the pattern was up there as well. Thanks for watching!

All the good stuff has been said and I sincerely agree. The only thing left is a bit critical. I wish you had provided some dimensions, although I realize you did point out the only critical dimension. Still it would have been nice to know what you started with. Also how many blocks did it take. I tried to make a count and came up with 14. Is that right? Last I would have preferred a voice description rather that the captions. If I watched the work I would miss the caption and have to back up to read. Oh, during assembly I would have started with a group of 3 blocks, not two. Clamping would have been much easier.
Thanks for watching and the feedback! I know I need to get a new Mic to do some voice overs (and I wouldn't mind a better 'radio' voice). To be honest, most of the measurements was trial and error... I picked the smaller boards as my first attempt, and the width was based on the 30 degree cut from that stock. So, once I cut the first part, I had to make the width of the next cut match the width of surface I just created with the first cut. Given the method I used to clamp, doing them in pairs made the most sense, however, I now have a nice set of strap clamps, that would definitely make that easier. Hope I answered all your questions, I've spent a lot of time in the shop lately, but it's been mostly production work, and I really need to get some new videos out of post-production and on TH-cam...

so, was this fresh wood you just "picked up" at the saw mill?
We're lucky here, the Sawmill near me also has a dried hardwood showroom, mostly local species. The owner used to make/repair pianos, so he's got some experience with wood :)

at the beginning when u cut out the round from the band saw u could of made more then one plate

I was very much looking forward to learning from your video. However, I am partially blind and it is very hard for me to see what is going on at all times so I depend on the person explaining what is going on. Alas, it appears we have returned to the era of the silent films. Seriously folks, why can't people talk in their videos. Is your voice so disturbing that people are going to jump off bridges if they hear it. The music almost made want to do so.
