Wood Turning Large Tumbling Block Bowl Escher Style

  • I turn a tumbling block bowl or maybe it is a platter using Walnut, Maple and Cherry.
    I try to show my step by step method to cut and glue up the blank.
    This creates a very interesting illusion. It gives many looks, including a stair step.
    The process for gluing it together is time consuming but spread over a number of days it was not bad. The pieces all fit in place with only a few needing a slight adjustment.
    There were 240 pieces used to make 80 blocks plus a few dozen more to fill in areas around the outside.
    Finishes used:
    Minwax sanding sealer and Polycyrlic
    Acks Abrasive Paste and Polish/Restoring Paste
    Tools used:
    Bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers.

      Thank you Stephanie, all I can say is I knew the end results would be very interesting looking so I just kept focused on that There are times when you almost sure it has a bunch of raised blocks but it is as smooth as can be. We can than the artist M.C Escher for his painting many years ago.

    I still don't know how you get all those pointy bumps on a lathe. Or how you manage to build up the finish so the bumps shine flat. I guess it's because I don't have a 3D monitor. Or is it just trick photography - I wonder ??? LOL !!!
    Nicely done Gary ! Sometimes I wish I had the tooling to do this as you make such impressive, beautiful turnings. Oh, how big did it turn out to be 14 or so ?

      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Mike, happy your liked it. To get those sharp bumpy things you have to move the gouge fast lol.
      Takes a table saw and a lathe to make these. If you would like some sketches on it you have my email.
      I think I mentioned it was a 16 inch blank but I turned it to 15 to get the look on the outside. If not that is what it is.
      Next one will have to start out at 18 to get the look of the blocks on the outside.
      Thanks for watching my friend,

      Yeah, I was afraid it was some tricky tool work - I'm getting pretty good at making scallops on a rim but need a lot of practice (they still look like an old man's gums LOL).
      I only have a band saw and not about to try anything this complicated with that. And handtools and sanding. Ugh!

      So the jigs are just cutouts in stacked up baltic birch. They can be band sawed out. But I have a CNC mill so I used that. The gigs are really what makes this accurate as it is a clamping fixture that pulls all 3 joints into the right place.

    When I first saw one of these bowls, I couldn’t figure out what was supposed to be tumbling! The second time I changed my focus, and saw it! Then I tried to figure out how you did it., and what you did about the corners that were sticking up.Whew! I took me countless views and seeing various other types of segmenting to realize what you do. I gave up after that. Being able to figure all that out, what goes where and how completely overwhelms me!. I’m glad and impressed that you have figured it out, so you can produce such amazing pieces!

      The boards were .904 inches thick and 2.75 inches wide. They do not have to be that size. The important part is when you cut the angle that you match that length for the width of the block.
      I would have to make detailed drawings to match exactly what I have but a person has the advantage to use the stock they have and adjust the cuts according to that.

First one of these I made I decided the individual fixtures were going to help. After I had the blocks glued I came up with making fixtures to hold 6 blocks at a time. So far it has been working out. There was an artist name M.C. Escher that had a painting. He was born in 1898 so that image has been around and used many times. The illusion is made with 3 different colors. I have done the same with a star shape. When you look at the block shape it consist of 6 points so the geometry is easy to find. Just a matter of cutting all the pieces correctly.

    I just got back from my father in laws and he likes to do a little wood working every now and then, and mentioned a few weeks ago and several times he wanted to try a three effect type cutting board. And wanted to figure out how to cut the pieces. So I offered to bring the few pieces I had cut out and also show him how to set his saw up, etc. So this evening while we were there, me and my father in law went to the basement because he had a question about how to orient the pieces after they were cut. so I cut him three pieces and showed him how theywent together. Afterwards, he wondered if the pieces could cut with a chopsaw. I told him I would try it out this week. Do think it's possible, I believe it would be possible also. I will let you know. Stay safe!

    Nice work as usual. I like the segments and the pattern. One day I will have to try this. How many boards did it take you to make all the segments? The only thing that disappointing about this video is no Face time. ha ha ha Harold Mills

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Harold, happy you liked it and sorry about the Face time. I had 2 recent back to back videos where there was a bit of face time and that might be the quota for a bit..LOL
      So I used 3 boards of each type of wood that were about 16" long and 2 1/2 inch wide. About 5 board feet total.
      Thanks for watching,

      @@ThePapa1947 you only used 3 boards of each type, 16" long, total length 48" x 2 1/2 each type? How thick were your boards, 3/4? They were cut at 60 degrees or as you said 30 degrees off 90? I want to do this!!

      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomaswinkelspecht7912 as I recall they were closer to 1 inch thick.

      Thank you Robert! Yes lots of clamps for sure. Years ago my wife always bought me clamps for presents. I told her she could probably stop now. I have a bunch of the little spring clamps as well. I have almost ran out of those on some glue ups.

    Dear Gary, amazing illusion created, it really looks 3D with the arrangement you have made. Cutting the individual blocks: I guess the external angle is 120˚ and the internal angles 60˚ x 2 and 120˚ x2? Funny, it adds up to 360˚.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Peter, happy you liked it. Yes the included angle where they fit is 120. Pretty simple when you think of it as a complete 360 rotation. What can be confusing to some is when I cut them with a tilted blade you tilt it 30 degrees off of 90. I guess I always think about that from work. When we needed to cut a draft angle on the side of a pattern you would tilt the table saw or bandsaw and measure how much off of 90. Common draft angles were 3-5 degrees.
