The Big Bowl Turning: Stacked Ring Technique

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 ก.ย. 2024
- Turning a big 19.5" x 6" bowl out of maple and cherry, using the really cool process of stacked ring lamination. The concept is similar segmented bowl turning, but works a little differently. Just like segmented turning a lot of gluing is involved, but the clever cut rings make it a little more efficient and very economic.
I will be posting an an article on the website soon, to provide more detail about the process, so keep an eye out!

Beautiful bowl Alex, nice save.
Well done. It's a nice design, and I really like how you included the error and showed how you went about fixing it rather than just jumping to the finished product. That's a valuable lesson for anybody getting into this or any other kind of crafting for that matter.
I'm also a carpenter from Serbia in Belgrade but I want to congratulate you on a perfect work I've been doing for many years, but you are a true talent only forward.
Turned out great! Well done :)
Beautiful!! Something "always happens" with woodworking, but the recovery, brings out the humble artist. Great recovery and attitude. Thanks for sharing.
I know nothing about woodworking but I was totally mesmerized watching this come together.
Hi Alex, I watch loads of American and eastern European woodworkers turning out beautiful projects, we don't have many British people who put up videos so keep up the good work. You are gaining in your woodworking skills as well as your presentation, your family must be very proud of you .I will continue to watch you and our old friend Steve Ramsey. Best wishes. Phil, Hereford U.K.
I had turned a Oak Bowl back in the early 70's and my Mum loved it and kept up with it to the day She Died. I am certainly impressed with your work young man, keep the projects coming!! Sincerely, JeffQ
Good design and wood choice. That wasn't an accident, just an undocumented feature! Very nice to see you back at it.
beautiful project. very refreshing to see that the next generation will keep craftsmanship alive...great job
I can't help but admire your growth as a man... wood worker. Such talent. I applaud your candor and humility as you aspire to raise yourself among the ranks. The same of which I would aspire to be. Well done Alex!
Segmented bowls are always very stunning, this is no exception , it is very nice to see how it's made. An informative video. Thanks,
That bowl is amazing, and I love how you took the time to address the breakage and show how us how to fix it. Love the bowl :D
i admire the fact that you told us about the fact that the bowl broke insted of just fixing it, keep up the good work
This is way cool. And it is such an efficient use of the wood. What a shame when you see people turning bowls out of a freaking stump and 80% of the wood is just scrapped!
In my 53 years on this planet, I have never heard a person ACTUALLY use the word 'wilst' in a sentance. I can now die happy!. What a GREAT job you did here on this project...
Nice technique, Thank you for the demonstration and the bowl looks fantastic!
Regards,
Bob
Ciao. In my experience the professional is not the one that doesn't make a mistake, but the one that solve the problems and turn defects in improvements.
Good job guy!
Your italian fan

I've made the same type of bowl a few years back. I also had the same type of failure. I've learned these types of bowls are a little more prone to breaking than natural bowls and segmented bowls, I believe because of the glue joints and the alternating grain direction. Great video and thank you for sharing!
2 vids I've watched of yours, 2 thumbs up! you're a smart kid and again you've inspired me. Had a lathe for a while now but didn't realize the bowls weren't impossible. Thanks again!
Hello from Sydney, Aust. Wonderful work and thank you for sharing. What a privilege to be so skilled at your age - that requires talent and dedicated hard work. My serious woodworking begain in my early 40s - oh to turn the (hand made wooden mechanical) clock back! Keep it up - this world needs more people like you - creating beautiful things from natural materials using your hands (and brain!). So good. Cheers and thank you, David
Very nice bowl Alex. Glad you were able to save the project. Looking forward to seeing more.
Beautiful work. I watch this and think of all the young people out there that sit around all day playing videos games, watching sports, and doing nothing skillful or productive. You can tell you really enjoy what your doing. :-)
Well, I guess video gamers also enjoy what they are doing? It´s not about productivity but about what you like.
A beautiful bowl. It's been a pleasure to watch you mature as a woodworker and a You-Tube presenter. Keep up the good work.
Another fantastic project and you recovered from the break with a really nice item. I really enjoy watching and learning from you.
Wow, That is a big bowl. I didn't realise the axminster had a sliding head and could manage such a big swing.
Nice work fella.
Like the new format too.
You have come on quite a bit, a woodworker of merit.
Hi Alex, for a young man I think you are absolutely great at what you do. I wish I had your talent. The bowl was beautiful. I watch all your videos as well as Steve Ramsey's. Y'all keep up the good thing you have going.
Thanks,
Gene Grissom

Great bowl Alex and very nice save.
Amazing work, the bowl looks great. Really appreciate you being so open and honest.
Very skilled for one so young. Well done, young man! I don't understand how you could get the financing to build this workshop at your youthful age, but you certainly know how to use these tools. I found it interesting to know how it was built before any lathe work began. The bowl is splendid!
Moral of this video: Glue twice, Turn once.
Excellent piece... Even though there was a break, you still did an amazing job!! Beautiful bowl!! Cheers... Adam...
nice work, really NICE... Thanks for NOT getting hurt, a flying piece of wood could put you up for weeks... Hurry back with next project.. looking forward to it.. Thanks
Big respect to you mate. I am 30+ , and i am amateur in woodworking, either I spend all free time for it. I stared 5 years ago with woodworking and still can't even think about starting such a project. Only boxes and benches :)
regards from russia. P.s. Sorry for my amateur english;)
I just got a min lathe, this week. I am 67 and my hands shake, but your bowl has given me attitude that I can do it. Thanks.
Your skills are improving by leaps and bounds! Good job!
Seriously clever! Great use of resources... timber AND time... and well saved with that nasty blow-out. Beautiful piece, would suit any home.
Wonderful work Alex!!! I always look forward to your videos.
Congratulations, this project is very efficient using low quantity of wood, opposite to other similar bowls that produce a lot of waste from raw material.
everything happens for a reason Alex, I think the bowl looks proportionally fantastic now that you have made it smaller, great finished product there Alex & remember woodworking is a way of life, not just a hobby or a job
even with the top ring cut off it is still a large bowl....well done mate....very nice.
NICE Recovery!!! That's what makes you a SKILLED woodworker...Like Chad Stanton one said (when assembling a Craftsman style frame I do believe), It's being able to fix the mistakes that makes you a good woodworker! Which you have done quite beautifully! Or, as ***** says, it gives it character!
Great job, really efficient use of timber to provide a creative bowl...well done!
Great work! I think the difference between a bad woodworker and a good woodworker is that a good woodworker like you knows how to fix mistakes and a bad one doesn't. A suggestion: I think you could just glue the broken piece back on.
Great attitude with the broken ring. Everything is ok, it's just wood! Like the videos keep making them!
Great work Alex, well done.
This is awesome man! I have been lost in how segmented projects are made, and seeing you assemble that thing really cleared it up!!
This is gorgeous. Even if i was missing 2 more rows, it would still be large enough for most houses. What I really like is how well the lines match. Excellent work.
Amazing way to cut the segments! Really nice work
That's a really nice bowl and a great recovery - good job!
Nice save on the beautiful bowl. Glad it didn't break farther down the rings. I see you have acquired some new toys(tools) since I last tuned in.
Great job and thanks for showing the save.
That bowl turned out amazing. Subscribed!
That's fantastic!! Cudos for showing the catch next time just keep that to your self and enjoy the Ohs and Ahs
Great looking bowl! Nice lathe too! Thanks for doing what you're doing!
Beautiful bowl, and you have such a great talent at such an early age. Congrats!
Great looking Bowl. Its cool to see such big stuff on the lathe. Love the videos!
Very nice work! Tell me - how much time did it take this job and what type of wood used?
Mark Fisher, Kiev, Ukraine.
Alex, you should make the admission of wood on the bottom and stick there a separate cheap-wood plate, and attach bowl to the rotor by the plate, so as not to spoil the bowl's bottom
good work!
My woodworking skills consist of driving a nail straight 1 for 3 but I love to see great pieces of woodturning such as this . The only thing to improve bowl is popcorn ! :) Great day to ya.
Hi, Alex. Very good this your video. I'm finished my homemade lathe and then start doing these wonders. Big hug and thanks for your true class. Your friend from Brazil, Albert Thomaz
Just a thought for the next time. When you're cutting the outer ring, cut it straight instead of at an angle. In this case it wouldn't have mattered because of the catch, but having that top ring be straight sided gives you some options for the rim. I did one where I was able to undercut the top just a little which gave a finger hold/solid place to hang on to the bowl.
Nice job though, and nice recovery. I had a segmented hollow form that caused me the same issue - a catch popped off the top ring. So the hole ended up a bit larger than was planned, but unless I were to tell you it wouldn't be noticeable. It's nice when an issue is able to be recovered from. Just another design opportunity :)
Thanks for sharing your work.
I always look forward to your next video, you are a very talented wood worker. And mean while you're growing into a full grown man! It's been a pleasure to follow you so far :-) Have a nice weekend.
that is amazing! such talent! and the fact that you made a mistake, showed it then repaired it and produced something so beautiful! could watch your work all day.new subscriber.
Brilliant woodworking presented in my favorite accent. What more can I ask for? Well done.
Greetings from Israel!
Very nice bowl, well done, and nice save after the break.
hi, great work, i am a carpenter by trade so i thought, after seeing what you can do, i just work with wood, you are a master at what you do.
Well done. You snatched triumph out of the jaws of disaster!
I like the technique of the segmented, laminated rings. Cuts down on the cost and the waste.
That's a beautiful bowl Alex, great job (and a lot of work I can imagine), good recovery!! Best, Daniel
Thank you so much for making this video - the work that went into it and the finished result is absolutely stunning!
I had a shitty day and now watching this, the god damn perfection of the bowl is making me tear up.... Good shit
Great bowl and great "warts and all" video. In some ways its nice to see that these things happen to others as well! 😁
holy smokes, that is really, really beautiful. Love the way you saved the project after the break, as well. Cheers from Holland!
Nice work, thanks for sharing, sometimes seeing people recover from there mistakes is more informative then a perfect project, thanks for pushing through.
What a beautiful bowl. I want one.
Unfortunately I'm in Australia.
Well done.
Spectacular save. I know I've worked in clay on the wheel and have similar things happen, your final results is very very nice. I hope to have a nice lathe one day so I can do this also.
Wow good job very simple to do and good come back with how to fix it . I'll been turning for about a year now I'm goin to try this but in a smaller size. Thanks again good job.
Beautiful work young man.You are very talented.
Hey Alex:
Now there is a keeper!
Well done.
Thanks for sharing
Larry
Beautiful bowl Alex. I really want to try that technique of bowl turning.
Nice recovery, Alex! I'd add a foot to the bowl to give it a slightly larger base to improve stability. But if its main purpose isn't anything more than an artistic gesture, then its just fine. You do great work.
Thanks for showing you break. I am a new turner and it is good to know this can happen to the best. Keep up your good work.
Nice job Alex! I hope to be as good as you when I grow up.
Turned out amazing!!!
Beautiful piece and well produced video. I was particularly impressed with your recovery. Thanks for sharing, Gord
Wow! Inspiring video - I feel like I want to go and try make something right now. Well done on recovering from the breakage and still having a bowl that looked awesome.
Good save following the break - that aside, still an awesome piece of work - especially like the oil finish that brought out the tones brilliantly.
Sweet work , and a good demo. Wood always decides the outcome.
Gotta say that is is one awesome bowl ! Great job!!
Great bowl - even if it is a little shorter than planned.
Alan Stratton
Great project Alex, and I like your music overdub.
mind blowing
how old are you
never mind
truly a master at work
because you also show a hickup
you've got balls
and skills
good job man ! I wonder what kind of amazing stuff you'll be able to make after 20 more years of experience... hope you'll still be on TH-cam ;)
still looks good despite disaster great job!
Looks great! And what a brilliant design. Good job on the video too.
Another fantastic project Alex. Love watching your work. Pity about the slight issue but hey it happens and at least you still managed to salvage a lovely bowl out of it. Well done!!
As always another impressive job. Wood turning is something I have not had a chance to try yet. Being a Po Woodworker, that type of expense will have to come in time.
Beautiful work!!! And an awesome workshop!!
Great looking bowl !!!
