I'll have no issues finding any spices as I live near both a Mexican market, Indian market and an Asian market. Both carry all the items needed for usually cheaper. As long as you can recognize spices, you can use them. For high heat cooking, nothing, I mean nothing other than lard beats ghee. Ghee is shelf stable, can tolerate high heats and makes a great butter flavoring for making popcorn in a dutch oven. I missed the first part, but also find the rice in Ethnic markets as they will sell big bags that are fresher than regular markets. Also, you can find various styles or flavors of rice. Like Japanese sticky rice is amazing, holds up well in bowls. Stores like a boss! Jasmine smells SO good, tastes nutty. Great for Indian style dishes or just as a different rice. Even Basmati rice (California raises brown Basmati rice), but yeah, go for varieties folks.
I love having multiple varieties of rice! You are lucky to live in an area that has so many ethnic food stores. I only have 1 grocery store and Wal Marts near me. 🥲
@@PlowAndPantryHomesteadhave a look online and you might find the different markets and still get a great deal. I am an American living in Scotland. My closest Asian Market is about 4 hours away as the one that was about 2 hours away near our closest big grocery store closed during covid lockdown and has never reopened. I began looking online to see if there were any shops closer than 2 hours away and discovered several online shops, they even sell the fresh fruit and veg, fresh tofu, and frozen things. If the items are refrigerated or frozen they send in a styrofoam box with ice packs in them. It is still cheaper than buying in our local stores and if I know I am going to do a big shop, I get free postage if I spend a certain amount. So that is when I tend to stock up and get 20kg bags of rices, all my usual herbs that I don’t grow (I grow all kinds but some just don’t like the Scottish weather), jars and cans of things and lots of fresh veggies, some I can’t get in the regular shops and some I can but are fresher and cheaper than the other shops. If you add a desiccant to the bouillon it won’t clump. Most desiccants on Amazon are reusable which means you can dry them out in the microwave. God bless from humid Texas.
Great idea........you've done a nice job formulating these rice dishes. You could cook these rice dishes then dehydrate them and have a minute rice version.
I never thought to make pre seasoned rice myself. In Australia we have a Continental Oriental Fried Rice package that our family loves as a side dish. It has dried peas corn and capsicum in it along with other seasonings. I'd love to try and make that one. I am a new subscriber to your channel and found it through looking up rice dishes.
I do like others have commented, mix all the spices together and keep in a jar, using to taste. The rice is also kept separated. I also put desiccant gel packets in both the spices and the rice to help keep moisture in line. The gel packets I purchase are rechargeable. There's only the two of us, so packaging up in sealers is not really necessary. And the way I (and others) do it, saves on space. And this way, I can have any type of rice with the seasoning mixes. Thank you for uploading.
When I cook rice in my mini rice cooker, I usually add my home, dehydrated vegetables, and then open up one of my home can meats. I never thought about doing it this way. Thanks!

@@PlowAndPantryHomestead I do my rice in my InstantPot a bit different from you. I use a 1:1 ratio of rice & water, cook for 4 minutes, then natural release for 10. Comes out perfect & fluffy.
These rice mixes are a great idea! I don't buy any of these mixes at the store but I've seen them and yes, they are pricey and filled with junk. I am going to put together some of your recipes. Thank you very much 😊
I love this. However, when I buy rice in bulk, I put some in my rice canister (a clean Sam's size peanut butter jar) and the remainder in the freezer. Where I live pantry moths and weavels are a problem. I did see the idea to put the seasonings in baggies or little jars. I get the little containers at Dollar Tree to keep small things/spices in and they will be perfect for this. And easier to store than 12 pint jars. Thank you so much!
Sounds great! I often buy in bulk too and will put it in the freezer for three days before I store it in my pantry. That's supposed to kill moths, weevils and other bugs. I do the same with corn meal and sometimes flour.
I think this is a brilliant idea especially for the new cooks or even kids when they want to cook some rice. This seasoning mixture is a super time saver with great flavoring. I am eager to try them soon.
To make Jambalaya mix, add these to your jar of rice: 1 TBS shrimp bouillon 1 tsp chicken bouillon 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp smoked paprika 1/2 tsp ground bay leaf 1/2 tsp ground thyme 1/2 tsp ground oregano 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper When you are cooking it, in addition to the water, add the following: 1/2 stick of butter A few handfuls of frozen shrimp (peeled, no tails) 1 LB smoked sausage (sliced) 20 oz bag of frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, green beans, corn)
Great idea! I sometime add those to the final product but putting it in ahead could make for a great complete meal in a jar/MRE type thing. You'll just need to figure out how to adjust the water to account for the meat and veggies.
I bought the big container of bouillon like you have there, I think it’s made by Knorr? I found it to be very salty, had to reduce measurement by at least half.
It depends on your cooking method. I showed mine in the instant pot. Any other method use the normal amount of rice to water ratio that you use for that method. If you're not sure, check your rice package. The seasonings do not change the cooking time or water needs.
old fashion dutch over if camping is one cup rice to three cups of water for brown rice. and one rice to three of water is standard for the dutch oven even if white rice old school. Great idea. also a bay leaf in jars and no storage issues with rice, beans or a variety of flours.
Awesome Tysm. Is your onion soup mix recipe very much like the store bought packages? If so, what is the title of your video? I think I’ll try all your ideas except curry as I’m not a fan. Thank you!
I like it better than the store packages but it's very similar. It's linked in the very bottom of the description box and also in an icard in the part of the video where I talk about it. The name is something like Homemade Seasoning Blends. There are a few in the same video.
I can (could the last time I tried) find tomato bullion with chicken flavor cubes at my Wal-Mart in the Hispanic section. It's labeled Caldo de Tomate. I think it would work just great to replace the chicken bullion and tomato powder in the Spanish rice recipe. I don't know that I would use enough tomato powder to make it economical for us to purchase that, but the recipe sounds intriguing and I've used the Spanish rice mix on vacation before, so I plan to give it a shot with the tomato bullion! Thanks for sharing all these ideas! Do you think there would be a ratio/ mix/ flavor concentration problem if you made a bigger jar full and just shook it up and used a portion for the amount you need at your meal? (Obviously adjusting the amount of water to match your rice.)
I am very familiar with Caldo de Tomate and I think that would work great! (I wish I would have thought of that). I think making a bigger jar would work as long as there is enough air space to remix it very well when you shake it because otherwise the majority of the seasonings would be concentrated on the bottom half.
It depends on how you store them. I vacuum seal mine and keep them in a fairly dark basement so they can last years. It also depends on what type of rice you like. Brown rice doesn't keep as long as white rice but using a vacuum sealer or an oxygen absorber will vastly extend shelf life.
I find bulk spices at Indian markets, Asian markets, or Mexican markets. They come in an ugly plastic bag, but I have my own jars for spices. Also wayyyy cheaper than walmart
Yes! I often shop the Mexican and Asian section of my grocery store for spices because they are so much cheaper. Sadly, I no longer live anywhere near any ethnic markets so I have to do with my regular grocery store and Walmart.
@@PlowAndPantryHomestead I hit up these markets when ever we travel either for the day or longer distance. Also, get items from Atlantic Spice Company, we used to camp near them on the Cape. Many weekend days I have to go out of Vermont to get the foods I want because we're so limited in inventory, amount & way over priced!! Bigger city areas 2-3 hours one way, we make a day of it. In the summer pack a cooler to keep them fresh.
Great presentation & ideas for rice! One thing regarding the salt content of any of the bouillion-type ingredients: My husband is diabetic & is also a dialysis patient, so white rice is one of our main go-to's for his carbs. But keeping salt intake low is a big deal. I've found that 1/4 tsp of KOSHER salt, Diamond brand (which has no additives, plus kosher salt is less fine than table salt) works perfectly for 1c plain jasmine white rice cooked 20 min in 2c water. I'll have to experiment if I switch out arborio or other types of rice for our usual jasmine. When I begin using your terrific flavoring mix suggestions, I'll merely adjust for any salty ingredients -- and my husband will be delighted to finally enjoy a lot more flavor with all his rice-based meals! (P.S. Polenta is another excellent carb for a diabetic on dialysis. I'm going to experiment with your seasoning mixes in polenta, too!) Cheers & many thanks!!
Thank you for these recipes. I'm trying to figure out a good broccoli, cheese and rice, and a chicken fried rice recipe, because my teens use a ridiculous amount or these, and I hate all of the junk in the store bought mixes. As I knew I was going to be eating a good deal more rice I remembered ricearoni from growing up in the US. I am so glad to have stumbled across your channel and have subscribed. I am excited to have a scroll through and see what other goodies you have shared. Thank you so much for sharing and I love that you cook from scratch. I do as well! Love and appreciation being sent to you from the western highlands of Scotland 🏴💖🙏
If you add a desiccant to the bouillon it won’t clump. Most desiccants on Amazon are reusable which means you can dry them out in the microwave. God bless from humid Texas.
I will be making all of these to put aside. Thank you so much so easy.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy them!
Great idea........you've done a nice job formulating these rice dishes. You could cook these rice dishes then dehydrate them and have a minute rice version.
I'm going to do a couple of these for a Christmas gift basket ❤
I’m going to try these because my kids love the knorr brand and I already have all the ingredients that you use thanks for this amazing video ❤😊
I hope your kids love them!
Oh, that sounds really good... I will have to look that up.
Sounds like one I need to try! Welcome to the channel!
@@PlowAndPantryHomestead Thanks so much.
Thanks!
Sounds delicious! I bet those flavors are amazing.
EXCELLENT VIDEO
Thank you for sharing this video
Thanks for watching!
First time watching you. So thankful you had recipes written down, so i could watch while you did them. Interested in your Soup Mix link but couldnt find it. Thanks for the great info.
Thanks for watching! If you're talking about the onion soup mix link, it should have been in an icard in the video, and those are also always linked in the bottom of the description box under the video.
For chicken flavor I use chicken broth for the water instead of bullion in cooking the rice w/other seasoning. This cuts down the saltiness.
Thank you for sharing. I love all the ideas.
Great recipes and thank you for sharing them! My family and I love Jasmine rice so I'm wondering can it be substituted for the white rice without it becoming too soggy when cooking some of your recipes?
You can substitute jasmine rice and just use the water suggestion from the jasmine rice package. I love jasmine rice too!
I'm going to make these. My family likes rice roni .This will save us money.I found this really helpful.
Thank you and I hope you enjoy!
My husband like that knoor beef flavor rice, I have not been able to find it. I will try your recipe. I love Spanish and chicken rice. Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy!
Love the idea, since I wash my rice, I will pre-mix and store the seasoning in separate packets within or with the jar. Thank you for sharing your recipes for these.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Love this idea! Never thought of it! Awesome!🎉
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I love how well organized you are and how you can put everything together so that part is out of the way. Have a wonderful day and thanks again! ✨️
You are welcome and thank you so much for your kind words!
Thank you! I'm most eager to try the Spanish rice recipe.
I hope you enjoy it!
Great video! We like the rice a roni but I’m always looking for ways to prepare more wholesome food. I’ve saved them all!
You’re going to love how easy these mixes are to prepare!
@@PlowAndPantryHomestead I do my rice in my InstantPot a bit different from you. I use a 1:1 ratio of rice & water, cook for 4 minutes, then natural release for 10. Comes out perfect & fluffy.
What a great idea! I'm all for making prep time easier and faster. (And healthier!) Thanks for this!
You’re welcome!
This is a great idea!!! Single mom, I NEED easy, lol. Thank you!! ❤
You are welcome! Glad this helps!
What a great idea. Anxious to try them, we eat a lot of rice.
I hope you enjoy!
These rice mixes are a great idea! I don't buy any of these mixes at the store but I've seen them and yes, they are pricey and filled with junk.
I am going to put together some of your recipes. Thank you very much 😊
I hope you enjoy them!
Thank you so much for sharing your recipes with us ❤❤❤❤
You're welcome!
I am so glad to have found you,had tried to do the rice thing before,it was ok ,but you got it down pat. Thank you so much.
Thanks for watching!
Great video. I would have liked having a little closer view to see you working on the mixes. I will definitely be trying your combination.

Ty for the great mix recipes. Blessings 😊
Thanks for watching and blessings to you as well!
Going to try
Hope you enjoy!
Excellent idea. Thank you; I may do this as well but put them in the food saver bags for ease of storage.
Food saver bags would be great for long term storage and lighter weight than jars.
I do the same with corn meal and sometimes flour.
it has been hard to find chicken rice a roni in my area so I am going to do this. thank you Barb from Indiana
Hope you enjoy it!
I think this is a brilliant idea especially for the new cooks or even kids when they want to cook some rice. This seasoning mixture is a super time saver with great flavoring. I am eager to try them soon.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy them!
I dried mixed vegetables so that would go very well
That would be great!
In Australia we have Rice A Riso, which is a blend of Rice & Risoni Pasta
Looking forward to making your Rice Recipes to have on my shelves
I had to look up risoni pasta. It looks like what we call orzo. I hope you enjoy the recipes!
To make Jambalaya mix, add these to your jar of rice:
1 TBS shrimp bouillon
1 tsp chicken bouillon
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp ground bay leaf
1/2 tsp ground thyme
1/2 tsp ground oregano
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
When you are cooking it, in addition to the water, add the following:
1/2 stick of butter
A few handfuls of frozen shrimp (peeled, no tails)
1 LB smoked sausage (sliced)
20 oz bag of frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, green beans, corn)
Great video.. Im a new subscriber.. Im thinking of using a quart jar, and adding freeze dried meat, and veggies :). thank you
Yes I want to try all of these. Somehow I missed how much water do you add when cooking?
It depends on your cooking method. I showed mine in the instant pot. Any other method use the normal amount of rice to water ratio that you use for that method. If you're not sure, check your rice package. The seasonings do not change the cooking time or water needs.
old fashion dutch over if camping is one cup rice to three cups of water for brown rice. and one rice to three of water is standard for the dutch oven even if white rice old school. Great idea. also a bay leaf in jars and no storage issues with rice, beans or a variety of flours.
I've never made rice in a dutch oven on the campfire. I've been looking for campfire recipes lately so thank you!
Looking forward to trying these. Anything to make dinner easier on worknights.
Hope you enjoy
These are awesome! They will be welcome additions to my pantry...thank you!
You are so welcome! I hope you enjoy them!
@@PlowAndPantryHomestead Trust me, I will! I bought a 25 lb bag of rice at Costco & have plenty of pint jars, lol! 😁
Thanks for sharing this information with us.
My pleasure
Add a bay leaf for seasoning which is also a pest deterant.
How can bugs get into a sealed jar?
@Maranatha1927 the eggs are already present and haven't hatched.
@@Maranatha1927I think egg larvae can still be present..
Great tip
@@ruthklingman1655 How can eggs survive if the oxygen is removed?
I would use mylar bags for shelf stability and space savings.
Hello, these are such a great idea to have one hand! Thank you.
Thank you!
I like the idea for putting the spice mixes in the Jars rather than the plastic as an emergency food for storage any idea on shelf life?
It depends on how you store them. I vacuum seal mine and keep them in a fairly dark basement so they can last years. It also depends on what type of rice you like. Brown rice doesn't keep as long as white rice but using a vacuum sealer or an oxygen absorber will vastly extend shelf life.
I keep my spices in a baggie and put on top of the in the jar so that I can rinse my rice 🍚.
Great solution! I really wanted to have the rice and the mix together in a tidy little jar. Thank you for using your noodle.
One thing regarding the salt content of any of the bouillion-type ingredients:
My husband is diabetic & is also a dialysis patient, so white rice is one of our main go-to's for his carbs.
I'm going to experiment with your seasoning mixes in polenta, too!)
Cheers & many thanks!!

Thank you I tried to eat healthy, you help me.
Thank you for these recipes. I'm trying to figure out a good broccoli, cheese and rice, and a chicken fried rice recipe, because my teens use a ridiculous amount or these, and I hate all of the junk in the store bought mixes. I'll be going to the Amish store to get some ingredients next month that I hope will give me the right dried powders to make those two in a homemade form.
Good morning,
Just came across the video.
I'm taking notes on the recipes.
I do very much appreciate them.
I have a question..
That tool that you used at the end of the video to vacuum seal the jar..I did not know one of them existed. Mind blown..
Curious, the name and where you got yours?
Thanks again
I’m glad you like the recipes! I have a link in the description of the vacuum sealer I use.
I will try them all. I appreciate you letting us know when you have tried them and found them to be good. I've tried some other channels suggestions and wondered if they had ever tried eating it!😅
Great recipes.NOTE- I was told to add pepper when using turmeric to recipes. God bless you from grandma Katie in Oregon😊

Very helpful video. Thank you.
I have an extremely old enamel cast iron pan close to 100 years old according to my grandma now that she's gone and the anyway. I always use one cup of rice to two cups of water turns out perfect every time except for crappy broken Surplus rice.
These are great!!! Anyone use a rice cooker with these recipes?
Thank you! I have never used a rice cooker so I hope someone else is able to answer your question.
This is such a great idea … what if I don’t have an instapot- and want to cook in rice maker - how much water would I use?
You would use whatever amount of water you normally use in your rice cooker.
Since I use broth instead of water when I make rice, I'll try with bouillon powder or cubes.
This is awesome. I have been wanting to create rice like this but finding the time to create recipes with all the other things I want to create I wind up never doing anything! Thank you for taking one thing off my plate to do!!
My pleasure 😊. I hope you enjoy the recipes! And over time you can adapt them to your own tastes. sometimes I find that less overwhelming that coming up with something from scratch.
We use a similar process, using boil-in-bag rice where the wash/rinse isn’t necessary.
Good idea!
I did the Curry Rice and had it with Garlic chicken and Its become a family Favorite now so for those who want the garlic chicken recipe for the instant pot its as follows : 6 pieces of chicken boned or boneless is fine, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 2 teaspoons of chicken broth, 1 cup of water, 1 teaspoon of thyme, 2 tablespoons of minced garlic, salt to taste. mix well and cook in the instant pot for 15 minutes you can let it sit for 5 minutes if you want or you can instant release and enjoy.
Awesome! Thanks!
@@PlowAndPantryHomestead 2 teaspoons of chicken broth? As in liquid chicken broth? That doesn’t seem like much.
Dear Plow and Pantry I have been looking for rice mixes I can make at home and I came across you site. Our favorite was not among your mixes and I was wondering if you have a Cheddar broccoli rice mix or if you could suggest to me someone that may have that recipe that I could get to go along with all your other yummy rice recipes?? Thank You for All you do!!
I have not done that one. When I want cheddar broccoli I just use frozen steamed broccoli that I chop up and shredded cheddar. I would think you could make it shelf stable if you used freeze dried broccoli and cheese powder. I was not able to find a shelf stable recipe for you when searching online. Thanks for watching!
So smart! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you! We love the seasoned rice packets, but need a low- or no sodium diet. I’ll make some of these with no-salt boullion. The uncle Ben’s we liked are 400+ mg of sodium per serving.
Good suggestion for anyone who is low sodium!
A great tool is a canning funnel. Helps get the ingredients including rice into the jar without getting them all over the counter.
I used the funnel for the rice. I use my canning funnels for sooooo many things. It's really a great tool for more than just canning.
Thanks, I love flavored Rice. Packages from the store are way too poluted for my taste anymore. I have been looking for Rice Spice Mix Recipes. Oh, new here and subscribed😊
Welcome! And thanks for watching!
Me as well
I like spiced rice
But i think just premixing the herbs and and add that to rice when you are going to cook it would be easier
Less work and less space/jars
Just a big bucket of rice and some jars of spicemix
That would work well too!
Great idea
Thank you! Cheers!
I love this idea!!! We don't have mason jars here. Can we use oxygen absorbers? If yes, 50c or 100c per jar?
You can! For a pint jar I would use a 100 cc.
