When I open a can of tomato paste, I fill ice cube trays with the tomato paste, freeze, then store in freezer in a baggie. Handy!
Great tip! I bet that's very handy.
Brilliant!
@@carolentringer8836 love this!!!! Thank you 🙏🏻
I buy tubes - when I want tomato paste, I open the tube and squeeze some out.
That's smart
Knorr makes a tomato bouillon that I use in Spanish rice. These are all great recipes. Thank you.
Yes! I was just responding to someone else about about that. It's a great option that I've used in other things before. I don't know why I didn't think of it before.
That was going to be my suggestion as well. It's a staple in our house.
Yes I like to add that to my stew as well.
And tomato chicken.
I have tried all of these flavors and they are all amazing. Since I do have a freeze dryer, what I did is cooked the rice with the individual flavors and put them on my freeze dryer trays and freeze dried them. This now gives me six different flavored rice, shelfstable for 25 years and reconstitutes in three minutes. It’s like having an instant rice but beautifully flavored.
Thank you so so so much for this video. This is amazing. ❤
Great idea!
Can you recommend an affordable / reliable freeze dryer?
@@yohon5117 Harvest Right has a lay away program and great customer service
Good Lord you think that they would make an affordable freeze dryer, I've wanted one for so long
@@yohon5117 hi … I just saw this. I have 2 harvest right freeze dryers and love them.
Loved your videos.I am I eighty two. and very busy quilting. This is just what we needed so Ed can be well fed. Add a protein, vegetables and good to go. He is eighty seven and likes to have a nice meal when he comes in from cutting wood.We live on a hundred twenty farm and I have always tried to fix meals without all the chemicals.I have never bought flavored rice. at the store but yours will be a treat for us. Keep the recipes coming. I am making a booklet of all these recipes I gather. We have an Amish store we shop at and they always have bouillon powder.
I put my spices in a baggie. So I can toast my rice and vermicelli just like the rice a roni mixes . And if we need the rice for something else, it's just easier with spices in a boggie!
Great way to do it you want to toast it!
I really like that idea! I’m going to do that! 😊
Great idea! I don't have a ton of room because I have to make all my food from scratch because I can't have salt. Thinking I can do jars of the powder mix and will need to figure out how much need for 3C batches for use doing the week!
I toast my rice with the spices.
Where is the rice a roti recipe?
I'm in W.Central Nebraska, and yes, I'm having trouble finding granular bouillon. Fortunately, I run a fully functional, stocked pantry as we get brutal Winter storms and ice, and I get restocked for Winter. Mexican and ethnic sections have bouillon and spices much cheaper than the inner shelves.
I normally have the cubes on hand but really wanted the granular here. I'm thinking I might switch the one I stock and I will definitely be getting more of it on my shelves right now.
You can also find the bullion cubes. If not try to order it. I know the Walmart in Chadron has it.💕
Amazon
@@PlowAndPantryHomestead You can actually find recipes for how to make it on TH-cam. Or I believe I also bought a pound of Frontier brand from Vitacost (may have been Azure before I quit shopping there but I dont think they carry Frontier anymore either?) Need to see if I can find the chicken flavor.
I’m in east central Nebraska, we have a high population of Mexican Immigrants, I shop in the small mom and pop stores they’ve started. Rice and beans are cheap and bullion granulas come in giant jars also cheap. If you have any of those shops, try them. Tastes much better than Knorr and whatnot too.
My wife is fixing a "ricearoni" box for tonight's supper and I came out to see what was on TH-cam and this video popped up. Going to Walmart in the morning for 1/2 pint jars. It is just the 2 of us and 1 1/2 cups of rice would last us all week! Thanks for the ideas!
Wal Mart has been spotty on almost everything here lately and like you we are doing a lot more shopping on the Hispanic aisle.
I live in Canada and noticed today at our big walmart the "ethnic" isle now has huge tubs of various boullions and broth mixes. Excellent for prepping and much better priced than the domestic brands.
Hope you enjoy!
I mixed up a batch like this for my Dad to cook for him & Mom. Used 2/3 cup of rice. And just used little jam jars.
I also made up a Ginger Chicken (but didn't write down the ratio so now I have to recreate it again next time I'm making them).
For chicken flavor I use chicken broth for the water instead of bullion in cooking the rice w/other seasoning. This cuts down the saltiness.
I do too!
To make Jambalaya mix, add these to your jar of rice:
1 TBS shrimp bouillon
1 tsp chicken bouillon
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp ground bay leaf
1/2 tsp ground thyme
1/2 tsp ground oregano
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
When you are cooking it, in addition to the water, add the following:
1/2 stick of butter
A few handfuls of frozen shrimp (peeled, no tails)
1 LB smoked sausage (sliced)
20 oz bag of frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, green beans, corn)
I already started playing with herb blends and tried one that I really like, esp with bbq food; ranch seasoning, a little onion powder, a little garlic powder (I like a lot of those flavors), salt and pepper. The second one I made is to go with Mediterranean meals; dried lemon zest that I ground into a powder, dried parsley, dried oregano, pinch of dried dill, chicken bullion, salt and pepper.
Those sound delicious!
If you want to put the spices in a small container, I'd like to suggest tiny Mylar bags. Uline, out of Wisconsin sells all kinds of containers and the like. The tiniest Mylar bags hold an ounce and can be sealed with an impact sealer or a clothes iron set on cotton.
Agreed. I do this for a lot and it works very well.
I would put my spices in a small zip bag so I could rinse my rice. It gets dusty and bugs get in some times. Looks like good idea though
She got it off the internet, those are not her recipes
You could totally do that. Since mine are in glass jars and vacuum sealed, dust and bugs aren't a worry. Many people do like to rinse their rice anyway though, since that removes excess starch and can make the final product fluffier. Putting the spices in a zip bag would be a great way to do it!
@@tabitharobertson4012 While I got inspiration for the original idea of my own rice mixes from the internet, these recipes are mine. I have changed and refined them over the last few years to get them exactly how we like them.
@@tabitharobertson4012 Does it really matter?
@@PlowAndPantryHomestead dust and bugs get in before you put it in the jar. Comes in the bag.
Adding so Garam Masala to the Curry one sounds like it will be amazing.
That's a great idea!
YOU! are appreciated. This did not cross my mind until this video crossed the path of TH-cam videos today. I must try this. May the coming season serve you and your loved ones with joy, prosperity, and comforting peace.
Thank you so much for your kind words.
If you want all the health benefits of the turmeric in your curry rice add pepper to the jar as well
I made the beef flavored rice recipe using vegan beef broth mix. It was so delicious and my son approved as well ❤️ thx for the video 👍👌
Yay!
I appreciate how everybody works together and the notes on the Ziplock bags versus the glass jars I love her idea just for the pure fact less plastic in our beautiful planet
With those 2 part ring lids on jars, I write the note on a circle of paper and put it on top of the lid before I screw on the ring. Then I also know which recipe I need to refill.
When I lived in Louisiana learned 1 cup rice to 2 cups water. Mine comes out perfect everytime. My husband even likes it for breakfast. Love your recipes. Cheaper than knors and better for you.
The key is 1 rice to 2 water - bring to boil, cover and simmer - Do Not Lift Lid till cooking time is up! Turns out perfect every time! Kansan here!

I love the Knorr bouillon from the mexican section. Best value per ounce, with the biggest punch of flavor.
Will try this with lentil rice, quinoa, and cauliflower rice. Thanks for sharing!
I bet those would be delicious!
I love Basmati rice. I buy a 20 lb of it at Costco and then jar it. This is a great idea! Blessings to All!
i only use Organic Better than Boullion which is the only bouillon I've found that has actual food ingrdients without all the MSG and other garbage.
i buy it at Costco only because they have 21 ounce jars for $9. I think i its gone up close to $10. But an 8 ounce jar at Walmart is $6.
That all said, Better than bouillon is a paste. So i put it in layers in my dehydrator and dry it, then ground it to a powder. Works like a charm and tastes so so yummy.
Great idea! My Costco doesn't carry that but I'm sure I could find a deal somewhere.
How long does your BTB last after dehydrating? I was thinking of freeze drying but heard others have had problems.
Watch the SALT in all the "Better than Boullion* products.
@@christysittig1200 the organic is low sodium and I've been using it for 5 or 6 years, it's great
@@juliemaring6048 I've dehydrated it and freeze dried it. Both ways turned out great but the freeze dried was a bit easier to deal with because you don't have to do a second dry after you powder it due to the heat of the processor making it sticky.
As far as how long it lasts, I put mine back into the dark colored jar it came in, after washing and drying it of course.
I keep it in a dark cabinet and it's pretty much good indefinitely. There's no water left in it to grow anything.
As long as it's air tight and out of the light it should retain the flavor as well
Love the idea, since I wash my rice, I will pre-mix and store the seasoning in separate packets within or with the jar. Thank you for sharing your recipes for these.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I do like others have commented, mix all the spices together and keep in a jar, using to taste. The rice is also kept separated. I also put desiccant gel packets in both the spices and the rice to help keep moisture in line. The gel packets I purchase are rechargeable.
There's only the two of us, so packaging up in sealers is not really necessary. And the way I (and others) do it, saves on space. And this way, I can have any type of rice with the seasoning mixes.
Thank you for uploading.
When you said onion soup mix I immediately thought about the packets of zesty Italian dressing mix. Both sound delicious 🤤 in rice.
Never thought of that! It sounds good!
I'll have no issues finding any spices as I live near both a Mexican market, Indian market and an Asian market. Both carry all the items needed for usually cheaper. As long as you can recognize spices, you can use them. For high heat cooking, nothing, I mean nothing other than lard beats ghee. Ghee is shelf stable, can tolerate high heats and makes a great butter flavoring for making popcorn in a dutch oven. I missed the first part, but also find the rice in Ethnic markets as they will sell big bags that are fresher than regular markets. Also, you can find various styles or flavors of rice. Like Japanese sticky rice is amazing, holds up well in bowls. Stores like a boss! Jasmine smells SO good, tastes nutty. Great for Indian style dishes or just as a different rice. Even Basmati rice (California raises brown Basmati rice), but yeah, go for varieties folks.
I love having multiple varieties of rice! You are lucky to live in an area that has so many ethnic food stores. I only have 1 grocery store and Wal Marts near me. 🥲
@@PlowAndPantryHomesteadhave a look online and you might find the different markets and still get a great deal. I am an American living in Scotland. My closest Asian Market is about 4 hours away as the one that was about 2 hours away near our closest big grocery store closed during covid lockdown and has never reopened. I began looking online to see if there were any shops closer than 2 hours away and discovered several online shops, they even sell the fresh fruit and veg, fresh tofu, and frozen things. If the items are refrigerated or frozen they send in a styrofoam box with ice packs in them. It is still cheaper than buying in our local stores and if I know I am going to do a big shop, I get free postage if I spend a certain amount. So that is when I tend to stock up and get 20kg bags of rices, all my usual herbs that I don’t grow (I grow all kinds but some just don’t like the Scottish weather), jars and cans of things and lots of fresh veggies, some I can’t get in the regular shops and some I can but are fresher and cheaper than the other shops. So you may find it cheaper and they often have the Indian shops, Caribbean shops, and so on online. It is worth checking out and as well as saving you money, it might give you other ideas to try. I drive my hubby nuts looking at the various online shops to see what they have lol. But when I find something new and make something yummy, he has to admit the time he thinks I wasted was actually worth it lol.

I like the idea for putting the spice mixes in the Jars rather than the plastic as an emergency food for storage any idea on shelf life?
It depends on how you store them. I vacuum seal mine and keep them in a fairly dark basement so they can last years. It also depends on what type of rice you like. Brown rice doesn't keep as long as white rice but using a vacuum sealer or an oxygen absorber will vastly extend shelf life.
Great recipes and thank you for sharing them! My family and I love Jasmine rice so I'm wondering can it be substituted for the white rice without it becoming too soggy when cooking some of your recipes?
You can substitute jasmine rice and just use the water suggestion from the jasmine rice package. I love jasmine rice too!

I can (could the last time I tried) find tomato bullion with chicken flavor cubes at my Wal-Mart in the Hispanic section. It's labeled Caldo de Tomate. I think it would work just great to replace the chicken bullion and tomato powder in the Spanish rice recipe. I don't know that I would use enough tomato powder to make it economical for us to purchase that, but the recipe sounds intriguing and I've used the Spanish rice mix on vacation before, so I plan to give it a shot with the tomato bullion! Thanks for sharing all these ideas!
Do you think there would be a ratio/ mix/ flavor concentration problem if you made a bigger jar full and just shook it up and used a portion for the amount you need at your meal? (Obviously adjusting the amount of water to match your rice.)
I am very familiar with Caldo de Tomate and I think that would work great! (I wish I would have thought of that). I think making a bigger jar would work as long as there is enough air space to remix it very well when you shake it because otherwise the majority of the seasonings would be concentrated on the bottom half.
