Standard Chevy Steering Column Reassembly

  • After completely taking the 1969 Corvette steering column apart, cleaning it, stripping the old paint, and applying primer and fresh paint, the next step was reassembling the whole thing.
In this video (edited considerably to keep it right at 10 minutes), the whole assembly gets put back together, including installing a used (but working) turn-signal switch, the column key switch housing, and much more.
The purpose of this video is not really to teach the average person how to reassemble a C3 Corvette steering column, but rather to give the do-it-yourselfer a better understanding of how the whole assembly is put together in case they need to fix or replace their car's steering column or any associated components.
And I'll be the first one to admit that these restoration projects are not only difficult and challenging but also time-consuming and-if allowed-can drive the average normal human being completely bananas.
So a great deal of time must be allotted for these projects along with a healthy dose of good humor and patience. Trust me when I say that you will need it should you decide to venture down this proverbial rabbit hole.
But all negativity and discouragement aside, once a project of this magnitude is completed successfully, the level of accomplishment and knowing that the many tasks were performed right, can be quite rewarding and satisfying, and that justifies the effort.
    Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

That's a big undertaking and I give you credit for doing that . Final results look great and your 76 is looking extremely good. I really appreciate the time and care you do towards your C3 projects. You've got a great machine ! Keep it up. Next up on my project list is the core support and I'm not looking forward to that lol.

Hey Jonathan, right? Good to hear from you. I binge-watched your 77 Vette videos between last night and this morning. lol 😆
I thought I was particular about details, but after watching your videos on the power steering ram restoration I think I’ll have to concede. Haha. For a second I thought you were going to start polishing it to a chrome finish 😳 but it turned out beautiful painted black. BTW, you may want to try Eastwood’s Underhood Black. It looks like the factory paint they used back then.
The rad core support is a PITA to deal with, but you do good work so I’m sure you’ll have no problem replacing it. And while you’re there, you may want to swap the radiator for an aluminum one. Just a thought.
      Stay in touch. 😊👍🏻

Ive got a 1975-78 custom eklers corvette that was built by a drug runner in the 80s. His accomplice turned him in and he ran from the cops, destroyed the front fender on a curb then gave it to his lawyer who then sold it to my gpa, who stripped it down, had a subdermal hematoma and forgot where he was with it, so he sold it to me in a pile of parts but I had no idea how to assemble the steering column or what I needed, this video showed me exactly what parts I'm missing and how to put it all together, thank you so so much man your a lifesaver💯🙏

You may want to look at the pics I posted to Instagram a while ago, as they may help you understand how to disassemble the column. Hope it helps.
