Oh shoot! Well thanks I appreciate that! I’m still trying to find my style and stuff so I’ll be doing better things hopefully, I’m going between three games right now for my channel.
If you haven't tried returning to this yet, I recommend retrying with blast door edges to help increase the stability of the elevator. You can have them wrapped around in at least two rings around the shaft separated by a few blocks so they prevent the elevator from shifting diagonally. With this design you might need to place them below the elevator with the first set one block beneath and the next set at least three block beneath. There will be some rubbing but there shouldn't be any damage
I plan on coming back to it I had like a 2 month hiatus. I’m back and starting with just a few smaller easy things to put out before I get into the huge grind again
I have tried this exact same thing a tether to the moon but after hundreds of hours and probably a dozen designs I discovered an engine limitation that prevents a tether to the moon. Once you get to a certain height from the earth, the game simply will not let you weld any higher. I believe the limit is about 36000m if I remember correctly. I tried a separate grid attached at the limit by a magnetic plate which does work to extend the limit, but I couldn't get my build elevator onto the new section because my merge block wouldn't line up on the new grid. Amazing attempt though and I suspect your elevator was failing because you hit the height limit.
Yeah I’m aware unfortunately the game can’t handle it, I definitely want to reach the limit and show I’ve done the best I can with the limitations given to me :) I plan on coming back with a few more designs to just give it a try
I believe the limit is nothing to do with the height, but rather the number of blocks or something like that. It is a frequent issue for players trying to build enormous ships.
I'm fascinated by the limits and power of the game engine. Perhaps you should build a "catapult"/hinge to launch you to the moon instead. A long hinged structure that built via automation. And then you activate it to hinge you up into space. By you I guess I mean a small pod with small thrusters so you could course correct a little.
Having something this large fail as catastrophically as it does in this video would be pretty crippling in survival. I would be trying to put more safe measures in, like locks which engage if downward velocity peaks suddenly.
Yeah I unfortunately know of the limitations, still would like to reach the limitation of the game to say I’ve gone as far as I can. Will come back with a bigger better version and attempt to break the game!
I recommend using event controllers more, instead of just trusting the timings of something happening like a merge block connecting you have a event controller waiting for it to connect and the sequence doesn't continue until it has
@@chaosgirleva yeah, I’ve played tons of space engineers but there are still things I’ve not tinkered with. One of those being scripting and the event controllers
@@Mossy_Boulder they aren't too bad to get into, they function similar to timer blocks but instead of going at a set amount of time they go off when a certain block changes state, like when a door is opened or a merge block is connected or disconnected So what I assume is going wrong here is you have a timer block extending the piston to line up two merge blocks, then a timer that's supposed to last long enough that the merge block connect then disconnect the other set, so if they don't connect in time the other set still disconnects and everything falls Instead you can have the timer block extend the piston then an event controller that triggers when the merge blocks connect, then the event controller can unlock the other set, another event controller can detect when they disconnect and that can trigger another timer block This guarantees the system does not continue unless the merge blocks are in the intended states
This is an incredibly well made video! 8hrs of testing is a lot of time and I admire your perseverance! The only thing I recommend is using wheels pressed against the tower to aid in stabilizing. But other than that this is excellent!
Havent' seen the video yet, but it'll be interesting to see how you get past the limits on the maximum size of a single structure in SE. That's what always hampered my Space Elevator work Edit: Looks like either that, or game micro-hitches from welding blocks onto extremely large structures making timers blocks (which unfortunately use real time and not sim time) miss the mark, is what did in the elevator.
Thinking further, you could probably address this by enabling free-floating stations, and making the trip into 3 parts. Big downside being you wouldn't be able to use merge blocks for 2 reasons - first, you wouldn't be able to merge two structures that large. Second, there's a nonzero chance that the elevator would become a station after unmerging from the support
There's conflicting info out there but there seems to be a hard limit to how long a grid can be - with or without projectors there's a point where you can't even place the block anymore. Before you hit that limit you have to start a new grid and use a connector to attach them
Yeah I’ve heard there is some sort of limit. Despite that I’d like to try and get as far as I can personally to be able to say I’ve done it 😎 I’ll find that limit eventually
I believe the grid itself has a limitation. I remember some time ago that to get around this limitation some players used Connectors in order to expand on the grid that may help

Nicely done on the video. I've created one in survival a couple of years ago, with conveyoring en connectors from the base to the welders. Good fun until it got destroyed by npc ships. You should definitely give this another go. If you do, think about your centre of mass, if it's on the side opposite the attachment that would cause the rotation you're seeing.
You’re right I should’ve done that, my apologies. use wheels for elevation like have the same setup you have but without the mergers and use wheels on the body with arms sticking out the bottom for stability
Yeah I was going to make multiple version next episode I do on this. The only reason I have the merge blocks is the game will let me weld on the grid so it’s fully automatic. But I plan on making a version like this too
You made the Elevator Time-Driven and not Event-Driven it seems and merge blocks sometimes take a second longer to actually merge. Just check for the "block merged" event before starting the next event and then your elevator will not fall from the sky.
Yeah it was kind of an old build, I made this FOREVER ago and thought it would be fun to use it in this video. I need to make a new up to date version of the machine
That remembers me when I built an Elevator on a Mod-Planet, however it started with a Giant As hell tube going 8 kilometers deep into the Planet, and cut the Tube in 2KM segments, as the construct grew so Large my pc refused to calculate physics from its Game, causing me to phase through - so I cut it to segments. Later on I decided to make it a Space Elevator, which I used one of the outsides of the Tube Construction by built a 2x3 block wide shaft that fits an Small Grid Elevator, which is held with Wheels and powered by Thruster, and controlled with event controllers to make it fully automatic without the need of using Scripts. On the Surface base I opened the Roof, and built an 4x5 wide, but 100 block long Construction, that has a 2x3 wide hole in it. On each end there are temporary, red colored blocks on both ends to easily paste them on top of each other over and over again, bot they also have 4 Connectors on both sides, grouped all together as "merge" where an itself rapid triggering timer constantly spamming to connect these group type over and over again. When placing these constructions on top of each other, they connect immediately with connectors, allowing me to deconstruct the Red blocks. This allowed me to built a 38 Kilometer long Space elevator that has hundreds of Large grids connected perfectly on each other, so the phase through bug won't occur again. Surprisingly it ran smoothly. I tested the destruction of the elevator with a Tank and it took 3 Hours for it to collapse. Although I disconnected all Tubes, around half of them despwaned, but the majority pierced through my Base and made half as long holes right next to the Abyss Shaft. The shaft itself kept intact but the Tank hangar and Quarter sections next to in of the base got completely annihilated. 2 or 3 months ago I had to reset my Computer. Little did I know that Steam unfortunately don't save Worlds of SE, which I didn't know as actually former Xbox player, whose worlds on Xbox are cloud saved there as well. The entire world with the Elevator got deleted. I am not sure but on Reddit there is an video from me where I complained of a Bug that the wheels suddenly stopped working, which quite pissed me of as I don't know what exactly causes this bug. This exact video is the only evidence of the existence of my elevator since the tanks and all other vehicles i had problems with were only 10km away from the elevator. I am not sure but MAYBE you can see a glimpse of it.
I’ll definitely look into seeing if I can find that. But sounds like a lot of work went into it I’m sorry to hear you lost it! But that sounds like a good project to do as well. Making an elevator through the planet sounds difficult.
I was watching another guy's tutorial on making a ship that can make it to space. The biggest question I had was could you make a Space Elevator. Given this video it seems at least plausible. Riddled with technical difficulties but at least plausible.
It would seem Clang did not grant you blessings on this creation. Perhaps in the future, your sacrifices will be enough to find favor with them. /s /jk 😂 Seriously though very good video, keep it up, and i hope your creations go better in the future. 😊
Thanks! lol I don’t have a lot of experiences with clang fortunately. I plan on doing more experiment style videos so I’d imagine clang will be keeping an eye on me 😂 Thanks for watching :D
The biggest issue was that I didn’t calculate in the extra distance the piston head adds in. It caused one of the merge blocks to be just barely misaligned and when the secondary one would detach it would fall
Watching it i couldnt help but notice the occasional whoopsie dasies. The only missed opportunity I noticed was at the start where the guy could of said 'To the moon.' like Gru from Despicable Me.
Hey there, So the game has two types of gravity P gravity and Artificial gravity. P gravity is just short for planetary gravity. So when you’re near enough to a planet it’ll represent its gravity with P.
@@Mossy_Boulder P-gravity decreases once you reach sufficient distance from the center of a planet. I was wondering if your elevator had reached a stable height far enough from the surface to notice a decrease.
@@bearnaff9387 ohh I gotcha, my bad. Well I didn’t do a lot of walking around on the platform due to the merge blocks causing clang. But I wanna say at the end I did do a jump and I seemed to float longer than normal. So it seems I traveled far enough to notice a difference
Thanks! Turns out I like editing a lot. I didn’t go as crazy in my other two vids but I’ll be ramping it up as I learn more techniques. I appreciate it ❤️
@@Mossy_Boulder The work you put in shows, I've put in around a thousand hours in SE(including playtime while offline) and I've gotta say this is made even more impressive knowing how many times you must have made a save backup. Also, if you decide to continue this experiment, it may be worthwhile to factor in the gravity changes as you exit the atmosphere. It seemed to fall to the side constantly after the gravity levels were so vastly different from when you setup the timer blocks.
@@PersonALANty absolutely I plan on trying to improve the elevator and figuring out how much the loss of gravity affects it! And I appreciate the kind words of course ❤️
@@Mossy_Boulder I hope you are correct, but based on their history I have my doubts, it is likely to be more blocks or other silly features you can already have with mods.
Yeah a bit of if it but I’d say mostly just didn’t test my version out enough. One major flaw was I forgot to calculate the piston head. It made the merge block just tad too tall making connection inconsistent!
I was having issues with just the one and it was a very slow elevator it took hours just to get any meaningful distance from the planet. I plan to make a video in the future with multiple in one.
I'm currently building something like that in my survival, and I can give you some hints: 1. Use event controllers, not timers, system on event controllers is mush more stable in work (I don't know why, but my tests showed, that platform on timers felt several times, and platform on controllers never felt) 2. More stable construction has merge blocks on each side. 3. You can use landing legs instead of merge blocks, it requires less force on the pistons

There was one or two too many "umh" or "umm" but other then that good. Good explanation for what the video was about and good "story" progress. Nice editing and good music for the montages. The montages where perfectly in how long they where. I was just feeling "this has gone on for a bit.." then montage ended. Perfect! Maybe needed some reactions, from you, when the project went "fubar". Grad of video: Solid "A-". Looking forward to more project from "Mossy Boulder".
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback of course I’ll work on my ums haha. I try to cut them out 😅 sometimes TH-cam works in weird way with recommending videos. Appreciate you watching even if you don’t play the game much
This is awesome. Could a programmable block do better? I feel like one of the failures might be that the timing gets ever so slightly skewed over time and a programmable block could check for safety checkpoints like "did the merge block actually attach? if not, wait for it to do that and try it over and over until it does"

Hey that’s a pretty good ideas. I guess we will have to see I wanna make multiple variations next time
use wheels for elevation like have the same setup you have but without the mergers and use wheels on the body with arms sticking out the bottom for stability
Yeah I was going to make multiple version next episode I do on this. The only reason I have the merge blocks is the game will let me weld on the grid so it’s fully automatic. But I plan on making a version like this too
I also create a safety stop I call it in case the worst happens it will lock with landing gear and stop so I can fix it
You made the Elevator Time-Driven and not Event-Driven it seems and merge blocks sometimes take a second longer to actually merge.
Just check for the "block merged" event before starting the next event and then your elevator will not fall from the sky.
Yeah it was kind of an old build, I made this FOREVER ago and thought it would be fun to use it in this video. I need to make a new up to date version of the machine
Like how you kept the failures as well
Yeah I thought it was important, I’ll eventually be revisiting this!
The version I made is pretty sloppy honestly it could’ve been better the video got a bit rushed. I plan on coming back to make a better version!
@ well I give you credit for including the times the elevator blew up. Very entertaining!
@@targetdreamer257thanks! I thought the Timelapse felt more impactful if I included the failure too.
very nice concept
Thank you! Plan on eventually coming back and making a better version of this elevator
It would seem Clang did not grant you blessings on this creation. Perhaps in the future, your sacrifices will be enough to find favor with them. /s /jk 😂
Seriously though very good video, keep it up, and i hope your creations go better in the future. 😊
Thanks! lol I don’t have a lot of experiences with clang fortunately. I plan on doing more experiment style videos so I’d imagine clang will be keeping an eye on me 😂
Thanks for watching :D
What keps causing it to fall? Were your timers off so the merger blocks were all ending up unlocked at the same time occasionally?
The biggest issue was that I didn’t calculate in the extra distance the piston head adds in. It caused one of the merge blocks to be just barely misaligned and when the secondary one would detach it would fall
Watching it i couldnt help but notice the occasional whoopsie dasies. The only missed opportunity I noticed was at the start where the guy could of said 'To the moon.' like Gru from Despicable Me.
Dang well missed opportunities I guess 🤔 next time I’ll see what things I can thrown in for more “lols”
God just keeps knocking your tower down. but at least your persistent
Haha yeah, gotta keep trying. I’ll be coming back to this one
What's the p-gravity like at the top of the elevator? Could you use the existing structure as an alternate launch platform for low-power spacecraft?
Hey there, So the game has two types of gravity P gravity and Artificial gravity. P gravity is just short for planetary gravity. So when you’re near enough to a planet it’ll represent its gravity with P.
Oh and yes! You’d definitely be able to try and launch lower power ships up on the platform
I'm getting Ad Astra vibes here 😂
Haha you’re right I see it xD
in the end the lord struck them down for their insolence. may they rise from the ashes of defeat undeterred.
Haha yeah! I’ll rise from the ashes even stronger!
Wonderful editing and montages! =D
Thanks! Turns out I like editing a lot. I didn’t go as crazy in my other two vids but I’ll be ramping it up as I learn more techniques. I appreciate it ❤️
deserves a sub
Thanks man! I appreciate it!
Sick video
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
+1 vote for a pt 2 :)
Definitely! I wanna do this again but better
The fact you only have 100 subs is a crime.
You guys are too nice! I appreciate 100 still is crazy to me.
Love this
Thanks! I’m trying to make all of my vids have this kind of editing, sometimes I struggle to find cool ways to edit down large content.
When is keen going to fix their game?
Soon maybe, sounds like they have big things coming
@@Mossy_Boulder I hope you are correct, but based on their history I have my doubts, it is likely to be more blocks or other silly features you can already have with mods.
@@MegaLokopo I feel you there I’m hoping for the best but won’t keep my hopes too high 🤔
i want to subscribe... but you have the perfect amount of followers! LOL
lol I seen! It’s a painful thing to see. Haha thank you
I think your problem was either clang or timing block accuracy decay :/
Little bit of all I’m afraid I also didn’t account for the size of the piston head it’s on me for not testing it enough.
@@Mossy_Boulder you did quite good though! : D
How about an elevator through the center of the earth?
Yeah! I’ve seen someone try that before that’d be a fun on to try too
Were the falls just Klang?
Yeah a bit of if it but I’d say mostly just didn’t test my version out enough. One major flaw was I forgot to calculate the piston head. It made the merge block just tad too tall making connection inconsistent!
So why aren't you just running 10 simultaneously for each test? Are they automated or not?
It’s automated yeah, it was very slow and not made well so I just recorded one version of the elevator for times sake.
I was having issues with just the one and it was a very slow elevator it took hours just to get any meaningful distance from the planet. I plan to make a video in the future with multiple in one.
I'm currently building something like that in my survival, and I can give you some hints:
1. Use event controllers, not timers, system on event controllers is mush more stable in work (I don't know why, but my tests showed, that platform on timers felt several times, and platform on controllers never felt)
2. More stable construction has merge blocks on each side.
3. You can use landing legs instead of merge blocks, it requires less force on the pistons
Thanks again haha
@@Mossy_Boulder oh, I sent it twice 🤣🤣🤣
@@user-cv8xu5qq1x it’s all good made me chuckle I do this all the time
I don't know how I got here. SE is not a game I play...not smert enoog...not smaut enugry...not..fuck! Me, dumb dumb.
But that was a good video.
Appreciate you watching even if you don’t play the game much
Mission failed we better get em next time👍
Absolutely 😎
All those attempts all those lives.. I just have a question for God Whyyyyyyy?
The all mighty klang bows for no souls haha. A lot of it’s my fault really for not testing good enough 😅
Moss
What’s up 😎
@@Mossy_Boulder the moon
@@DumbCup the mossy moon?
Is it really necessary to start every second sentence with " all right" ?
🤔 alright.
All the cuts in the video are really annoying, just let it play.
That’s the point of the video 🤌🏼 it’s a time lapse timed to the beat of the music
This is awesome. Could a programmable block do better? I feel like one of the failures might be that the timing gets ever so slightly skewed over time and a programmable block could check for safety checkpoints like "did the merge block actually attach? if not, wait for it to do that and try it over and over until it does"
Yeah I’ve not dabbled much with the programming blocks I’m definitely incorporating them next time
I'm currently building something like that in my survival, and I can give you some hints:

Hey man good advice, I’ve never dabbled into the controllers before. I’ve been meaning to look into them I know you can do a lot with them. I’ve done this in the past like maybe a year or two ago and it went better. I just didn’t test enough, but at least failures are just as entertaining as successes! Thanks for commenting I hope the content was enjoyable.
