You can tell it's an "express" cargo ship by its lack of retro thrusters. This looks like an interesting series. If you've grown fond of that ship, consider building a small grid hydrogen powered grabber drone (i.e. it has a landing gear pointing forwards) so you can reposition those thrusters by detatching them and using merge blocks to put them elsewhere. You'll be doing a lot of that if this is going to be a piracy heavy series.
I did this once with a bit of roleplay and it turned into my most memorable playthrough. I didn't use any cargo ship mods, but instead just relied on the vanilla encounters. Normal day at work, doing a spacewalk for a little maintenance on the ship on our way through a new region. We picked up a pirate signal and the pilot panicked; he jumped away immediately and left me out there. As I fled the pirates on my own, I picked up a distress signal and followed it to find a few damaged and abandoned habitat pods clustered together. Apparently the original owners had long been dead or gone, and either they or the pirates left the place booby-trapped. I managed to disable most of the traps and salvaged parts from two of the pods to get the third one mostly functional. From there I salvaged what I could find in the wreckage left behind by the pirates that apparently plagued the area, learned what I could about the things I took apart, and cobbled together a decent ship for defense, exploration, and eventual escape after hitting the pirates hard. What finally ended that run and prevented me from doing another like it was my annoyance at the ridiculously short character limit in the data pads that I was using to keep logs. We can develop jump drives and compact, automated manufacturing, but we can't store more than a few hundred text characters in a handheld computer? Bull***t.
I've never before watched any sort of Space Engineers content, but this has been a pretty good introduction to the game. All chill and with calming explanations of what's going on, rather than the jarring "high-energy" that you expect with a lot of let's plays.

I tend to start similar games like this, more recently going to no-oxygen planets... takes me a few hours of mining stone before I can get a small place with a functional airlock. Also recently been more keen to look for ore nodes instead of making a stone mine, as it is already going to be faster to build up what I need by doing that instead of just mining stone. There is the exception of my mining rig design I am still occasionally working on making it auto-print an extended line to move the platform down, which is capable of producing over 100k of stone in about 60 percent of the operation (takes about 3 hours before it auto shuts off due to an excess of stone and my refineries not being able to keep up); I set it to start before going to bed, and let it build up a ton of resources while I sleep. One mod I would recommend though, is Space Got Real. It makes the dark of space as dark as it is IRL, so like when you put your ship on the dark side of the asteroid, it would be impossible to see unless you had lights on it. That one and this other one I can't remember that replaces ore nodes with mixed variants (like iron and ice or silicon and nickel) would also be great.
Slight tip: If you're holding F while hand mining, you immediately pick up anything you mine up (as long as there's space in your inventory). I find this really helps prevent "losing" resources when mining in zero gravity.
Serious suggestion: "Spring Rain". To symbolize new beginnings. Shaman King reference. I believe this was the name Amidamaru gave the first sword his friend Mosuke forged for him. Joke Names: "Runaway Express" because you got no breaks. "Shipy McShipface"
I haven't played this game since like 2014. It was such a cool game at the time! Glad to see it still has a community because I'd be sad if this game was lost to time. Glad to have found the series! :)
It's possible to do this without piracy but there's definitely a lot of luck involved. You need to beeline it to Earthlike, grind down any unknown signals on the way. You're looking for at least 10 interior plate. Then you can build passenger seats onto unknown signals, which you can sit in and turn the battery back on, recharging your suit. Now you can recharge power at any unknown signal. Head to Earthlike and gather resources, prioritize computer chips. Once you hit Earthlike you need to kill wolves and try get power cells. When you have more than 80 computer parts and 4 power cells you can make 2 small batteries, attach them to a rotor and use your computer parts to make a basic assembler. Rotor lets the 2 small batteries power the assembler so you can make enough girders for wind turbines. Once you have a basic assembler and wind turbines it's easy to recycle parts to make a basic refinery then you're back in business. Takes a few hours, you can't die without restarting and you need to luck out on enough interior plates to get recharges and hit Earthlike atmosphere before you run out of air. But sometimes it works out
Oooh beltalowda... Oooh an Expanse reference... me likey! Great content my dude! I find it really hard to get my hands on good SE content made by personalities I sympathize with. You are now the second creator like that, first one is Splitsie. Thank you!
Silver was a very lucky find, basically turning this into a better start than starting with one of the starter respawn ships, all you need is the big refinery and you can start work on a survival kit or even better a medical station
Taking that second ship at the beginning would have been a really good idea... Each ship you steal is extra resources you cant currently manafacture at the moment, plus your ship has a pre-build merge block which means you can easily join the two ships into one grid. Best option would be merging the second ship, traveling to that neutral base that appeared, and destroy the ship while docked so you have power and O2 while you dissect both ships and rebuild one big ship (or sell of items to buy one) If the two ships are the exact same this also means you have 8 largegrid storages at the very beginning of the game which is HUGE because now you can just stockpile resources as you take apart both ships.
@@LargelyUnemployed I'm glad. I may have to get back into it after seeing your video Probably won't make my own video as I imagine the snipping must have taken ages
I said I'd never really get back into space engineers (say that about a lot of games...) and then I go and watch videos about the game and I'm like "yeah.... that looks fun, maybe I will play it again"
Nu-uh, you can build up even without basic tools I start up with the one and only mod, that increases the speed limit The easy way: Trading You start with 10k, go buy the tools and then it is a rush to find 3 medical something to build a survival kit The most scarce resource is energy, and disabling the comms does not help:( it just drains The hard way: Go and find a pirate outpost with saw-bots and minigun-bots, and force them to make a hole in the station hull Get inside and you'll see a message of activated self-destruction, get outside and wait, because you can't access anything When it'll blow - try to see a ring of small debree, disable your dampeners and follow it, if you are lucky enough, you'll get some tools or canisters of fuel/oxygen Then, look for MAYDAY signals, and build up from wrecks You can do it in many ways But that was my way
Lucky to find a pretty much defenseless ship so quickly to take over. Most vanilla ones at least have a couple gatling cannons to spray at things closing in. But I guess that's what it had to be since wouldn't be much of a series if you flew around space for 10 minutes then ran out of power.
The Random Weapon Picker mod cycled out those gattlings for these goofy ones. We absolutely lucked out as they're too large to track character models. If I'd approached in a ship we would have been vaporised lmao
Have you ever started off on a planet and hollowed out a mountain with a hand drill to get all the ores? It takes quite a bit of forethought to get everything inside a mountain and leave it a hollow shell, perfect for building a base. Maybe that could be your next challenge.
To match the color of another block, change to a light or heavy armor block, put the block over the block you wanna match, and then hit Shift-P to copy the color.
There used to be a mod called "3D printer gun" and I think that's how the base game should be - kinda like empyrion: galactic survival where you can craft a survival printer with your hands
Ive never played space engineers or seen any gameplay beyond people showing off crazy builds like a big railgun accelerater thingy. I didnt even know it had a single player like this.
I've done this several times, it's fairly easy. I'm setting up a modded version with (hopefully) no ice on asteroids and eating/drinking/sleeping required.
i just started this game(and my laptop sounds like a plane taking off playing it lmao) and i'm so bad- but i just found your channel and i feel so much confident and i've already learned a bunch from here so thank youuu
I think you can actually… you need to go into a store and start selling items. You need to hope that you find a station that sells ships. Best recommendation is to go to the moon and then go and find some of those stations that sell the ships!! Also getting resources from the ships is a great idea!!! Hope this helps
This is absolutely possible, as another commenter pointed out, I just unfortunately didn't have anywhere near enough time to grind that out when this was made. I have two other jobs I do, and this is very much just a hobby!
I suggest naming it Constantine after it's former Captain. It's also the name of a ba DC character. Also, I really liked the video. You earned my Sub! Can't wait for part two.

There is actually a mod that gives you an even more basic refinery inside of your suit. Refine ice and you get oxygen and hydrogen for your suit. And otter than that, the typical refining stuff to make your first survival kit and i belive a solar panel? Could be Hydrogen Engine. Dunno. Dont quite remember. Its been a few years.

There is a mod that allows you to totally start with nothing. ("Independent Survival - 1.197 Update" is the mod, which allows for a backpack survival kit.) Use CTRL-R and SHIFT-R to access the functionality.
Hint: with a block in your hand you can press shift + p to get the same color as you're looking at. Hint 2: you can detach npc thrusters and attach them elsewhere to make them functional
I’ve been doing this with 2 pals. We just got cobalt and made a refiner and an assembler. Honestly not sure what to do from there so I’m excited to get some tips from this video.
Having a ship from the start (and "coincedentally" without a proper antipersonnel defence) kinda degrade all this "Starting with NOTHING" thing. You just replaced the default start ship with a fancier one. So, where is the point? There is no struggle at all. Even if this isn't staged, still, this is immediatly turned into a mundane SE serie. Try starting at that random encounter with the escape pods. Especially if there are no nearby asteroids. That would be a challenge, that would be really interesting.

I'm not sure you're correct about the o2/h2 generation. Actually (maybe?) the machine makes ice into either O2 or H2 but never both. It's still smart to stockpile some amount of O2 but I don't think you're missing out on resources by doing it the other way.

Slight tip:
If you're holding F while hand mining, you immediately pick up anything you mine up (as long as there's space in your inventory).
Ship name. Rock Hopper
You can recharge power sitting in a chair. You can see if there is another turret from any panel (even if you don't own the block).
A trully beltalouda perished on the boat that started it all. Props to the captain, rest in pieces
Remember the Cant
@@LargelyUnemployed gotta check the orbital defense system, yall beltaloudas are prone to throw asteroids as revenge...
But sometimes it works out
Saving this for a future playthrough idea. Absolute genius
Space Engineers yay. Still one of the best sandbox space 3D games
It's so damn good

Oooh beltalowda... Oooh an Expanse reference... me likey! Great content my dude! I find it really hard to get my hands on good SE content made by personalities I sympathize with. You are now the second creator like that, first one is Splitsie. Thank you!
Huge praise, thank you!
I share the same sentiment. Just discovered him and I'm a big fan of Splitsie's.
Silver was a very lucky find, basically turning this into a better start than starting with one of the starter respawn ships, all you need is the big refinery and you can start work on a survival kit or even better a medical station
I think without it I would have had to restart tbh. Imagine losing the ship after all that
Bismark would have been a good name, because of the big turrets, but now that they are gone...
Taking that second ship at the beginning would have been a really good idea... Each ship you steal is extra resources you cant currently manafacture at the moment, plus your ship has a pre-build merge block which means you can easily join the two ships into one grid. Best option would be merging the second ship, traveling to that neutral base that appeared, and destroy the ship while docked so you have power and O2 while you dissect both ships and rebuild one big ship (or sell of items to buy one)
If the two ships are the exact same this also means you have 8 largegrid storages at the very beginning of the game which is HUGE because now you can just stockpile resources as you take apart both ships.
I giggle at the thought of the ship spinning helplessly after firing a salvo from that battleship turret lol
What I call beating the game is, Jump Drive, Settelemnt on all planets. and One Capital Class Ship, and 5 Pirate Controlled Ships taken over.
Last time I played this you had 60 seconds of boost and around five minutes of oxygen. Made survival almost impossible 😆
They made it muuuuuuuch easier when they added the planets in
@@LargelyUnemployed I'm glad. I may have to get back into it!
@@LargelyUnemployed I'm glad. I may have to get back into it after seeing your video
Probably won't make my own video as I imagine the snipping must have taken ages
as i did with OSRS, i started watching a series from a game i don't even play, and im loving it lol.
Suit Only Survival .... or S.O.S. for short 😂. It's pretty tuff to start with nothing else but yoo toes and a T-pose
pulling the colour is I think having the block and then looking at the block you want the colour form and press shift+p
I said I'd never really get back into space engineers (say that about a lot of games...) and then I go and watch videos about the game and I'm like "yeah.... that looks fun, maybe I will play it again"
Firing that gun should likely make it tumble head over heels o_0
New viewer here: This video series looks awesome and the intro for it was hilarious. Looking forward to more installments!
Nu-uh, you can build up even without basic tools
I start up with the one and only mod, that increases the speed limit
The easy way: Trading
You start with 10k, go buy the tools and then it is a rush to find 3 medical something to build a survival kit
The most scarce resource is energy, and disabling the comms does not help:( it just drains
The hard way: Go and find a pirate outpost with saw-bots and minigun-bots, and force them to make a hole in the station hull
Get inside and you'll see a message of activated self-destruction, get outside and wait, because you can't access anything
When it'll blow - try to see a ring of small debree, disable your dampeners and follow it, if you are lucky enough, you'll get some tools or canisters of fuel/oxygen
Then, look for MAYDAY signals, and build up from wrecks
You can do it in many ways
But that was my way
Finnaly i love space engineers
Lucky to find a pretty much defenseless ship so quickly to take over. Most vanilla ones at least have a couple gatling cannons to spray at things closing in. But I guess that's what it had to be since wouldn't be much of a series if you flew around space for 10 minutes then ran out of power.
The Random Weapon Picker mod cycled out those gattlings for these goofy ones. We absolutely lucked out as they're too large to track character models. If I'd approached in a ship we would have been vaporised lmao
I like how the main gun also can double as a propulsion device
Captain Constantine was a man of vision
Have you ever started off on a planet and hollowed out a mountain with a hand drill to get all the ores? It takes quite a bit of forethought to get everything inside a mountain and leave it a hollow shell, perfect for building a base. Maybe that could be your next challenge.
"I spent 40,000 hours digging a hole in Space Engineers"
@@LargelyUnemployed I was thinking more like "I turned this mountain into the ultimate Builder's Paradise in Space Engineers"
I would personally board any ship but before hand cut their engines off and their guns.
To copy colour you press shift+p with a none built block in hand hope that helps you man
“A count up timer” 🤣 I’m gonna start using that 😂😂
There are two things I’ve learned in space engineers about ship theft.
1. Hand guns are useless
2. Angle grinder is love. Angle grinder is life
I think you can actually… you need to go into a store and start selling items. You need to hope that you find a station that sells ships.
Best recommendation is to go to the moon and then go and find some of those stations that sell the ships!!
Also getting resources from the ships is a great idea!!!
Hope this helps
Also consider the fact that you get a pod that gives you useful items PRAY that is the power kit so that you can travel further
This is absolutely possible, as another commenter pointed out, I just unfortunately didn't have anywhere near enough time to grind that out when this was made. I have two other jobs I do, and this is very much just a hobby!
And Ctrl+ shift + p is copy color I think
@@LargelyUnemployedwell I get you. Still really good and interesting video man! Keep it up!!
I suggest naming it Constantine after it's former Captain.
It's also the name of a ba DC character.
Also, I really liked the video. You earned my Sub! Can't wait for part two.
Congrats on the 1/2 a million views... I just found it and subbed after watching... Great to see someone having a successful launch to a series and the interest in it still active 8 months down the line.. Well done fella!
Thanks! I only just noticed the numbers myself
"Only two motors in this thing? Nah not worth it." "Hm, I just need two more motors, I like doors but I guess that'll have to be the place." Like bro Ima need you to be aware of your last 15 seconds at minimum 😂. Fun video though, I like the concept and how you approached it. Thank you for posting!
From now on: "Count Up Timer" (CUP) It is an innovative new twist on the old concept of Count Down Timer. I don't think it will catch on though.
I remember sinking so many hours into this game as a teenager, super glad to see it again ❤
I was obsessed from about 2013-2015! It's taken a minute but I'm slowly remembering hpw to play. It's amazing how little has actually changed 🤣
finding a local rimworld and space engineers enjoyer is rare, keep it up
looks like an armed courier, mayhaps? (i’m more used to endless skies, where it’s split into cargo, miner, brawler, skirmisher, transport, and carrier, roughly, and the low cargo space but decent speed is typical of “courier” jobs)
27:20 You could have just accessed the terminal on the button panel of the outer door and shut off the turret instead of running all the way to the flight seat. :)
Nice video
What should we name the ship??
economy controler
few suggestions, Iron clad, Bastion, Behemoth, Claymore, Gannus, Excalibur, Icarus, Raptor, Fury, Walrus, große Waffe, little bastio
Space tortoise
The Salvation (yes, overused I know, but it did save your life!)
Little guy, big gun.
Planet express ship.
Im liking the idea however i feel your best bet would be cutting off that top gun and using the parts. One shot isnt gonna do anything but all those mats will
Why are you so practical? No trying to frankenstein two ships... Scrapping the beautiful turret...
There used to be a really cool suite only mod where your suit had an o2 generator, refinery, and crafter in the suite. Idk if it still works.
This is the game I want to install on my computer. I just need to level it up. Build ships, vehicles, bases, total freedom.
Target the item you are following in space and hit CTRL + Z keys to initiate dampener lock.
There is a mod that allows you to totally start with nothing. ("Independent Survival - 1.197 Update" is the mod, which allows for a backpack survival kit.) Use CTRL-R and SHIFT-R to access the functionality.
Pretty cool!
Hint: with a block in your hand you can press shift + p to get the same color as you're looking at.
Hint 2: you can detach npc thrusters and attach them elsewhere to make them functional
Stone, cobalt, and silver will get you setup for a LONG time.
count-up timer loll
I’ve been doing this with 2 pals. We just got cobalt and made a refiner and an assembler. Honestly not sure what to do from there so I’m excited to get some tips from this video.
Hope is was helpful! Mods can definitely make the difference
Count up timer is my new favourite word
Having a ship from the start (and "coincedentally" without a proper antipersonnel defence) kinda degrade all this "Starting with NOTHING" thing. You just replaced the default start ship with a fancier one. So, where is the point? There is no struggle at all.
Even if this isn't staged, still, this is immediatly turned into a mundane SE serie.
Try starting at that random encounter with the escape pods. Especially if there are no nearby asteroids. That would be a challenge, that would be really interesting.
Trust me that last bottle was wild.
This reminds me of when the crashed red ship was barely enough to start
I’ve been playing Space engineers for a while now, recently got on stationeers and I’m loving that too
I've got 3 series on it if you're interested!
Done with Europa and watching mimus. Great work. Im having trouble with the phase change update with filtrations. And all that condensation lol. Think you would make a tutorial when you got a change?
I haven't touched the game since the update either. It was a little too much of a change for me. Will almost certainly return, but I don't know when.
I've been playing SE for a while now and I've always wondered why there isn't a pathway to build up from nothing
I like that count-up timer
I do miss MadMavn's NSS series. I don't care about the other games he's switched to for the past several months.
I'm always on the lookout for a good singleplayer SE series. Those are the best.
survive in this game means getting a way to charge your suite and getting oxygen replenishement and thats the whole survival part which is easy as dirt.
Yip, which is why I added 15+ (very) hostile factions!
awsome i will want to see the conclusion of that then :D@@LargelyUnemployed
"What am I short on?" Well, the one hydrogen bottle you're trying to disassemble for one :) Great episode, just discovered your content. I think I'll hang around.
a count up timer....also known as a clock.....bro....u just killed me!!! i had to stop right there and sub ... much luv and thnx for the awesome content!!!
I think a planet start would’ve been far more interesting but admittedly likely impossible
With loadshedding?? It would take a month just to walk to the first unknown signal 🤣
I'm not sure you're correct about the o2/h2 generation.
Actually (maybe?) the machine makes ice into either O2 or H2 but never both. It's still smart to stockpile some amount of O2 but I don't think you're missing out on resources by doing it the other way.
This requires testing!
It can make either pure O2, pure H2, or make both at reduced speed
the soundtrack from Factorio in the background is awesome
I know I'm late, but I would have named it "The Lucky Find"
No loss ... except for batteries ... You lose the power thingies.
15:00 - Everything is NOT 100% recyclable, fuel components being the current exception.
