hi OneAuto, I'm planning to do my very first clutch job on my MK2 2.0L ford focus... Honestly seems like a hard job. I have a few questions if you're alright with answering: 1. Am I able to do this without a hoist and just some floor jacks to lift the car up? If so, would two in the front be completely fine? 2. At 9:00, when you were removing the passenger side drive shaft and you removed the boot instead, should mine be normally able to just be pulled out without removing the boot? 3. Is that automatic ratchet essential? Or can I do fine with just my normal ratchet. 4. Am I able to use a jack to hold the engine instead of an engine support bar? I await your response, if you choose to help out! Thanks a lot for the video, these are just small questions to ease my mind into getting the job done.
You can get a softwood beam to support your engine; cheaper than one of those supports that sit on the sides of the wings. then get some chain to wrap around the engine, and a nut and bolt to do up the chain. Did my fusion like this 3 years ago. Probably need to tie the beam up from the back either side to stop it moving. eric the car guy has a video of doing a focus mk1, and he didnt use a lift.
I hate it when the oil gushes out. Nice job man handling that gear box. I use my Milwaukee 12 ratchet all the time. Great tool. Thank u Rob the sole proprietor.
Hi rob just had my clutch replaced yesterday as it was slipping, but today my wife has driven the car, and something happened with the gearbox where it wont go into gear. It has been mentioned by my father in law, that it can be common following clutch change, with either air in the gearbox or something to do with a 'clip' of some kind. Any ideas from you would be much appreciated!
I know this video is a little old, but would the rear main seal be behind the flywheel? Somewhat of the same process? I have to replace mine here when it warms up a bit. It's a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 SES with a Duratec 2.0
Do you know if the clutch bite should be particularly high on these? Almost to the end of the travel bar a few CMs. Not slipping or anything and goes fine up hill. Thanks in advance
Should mention car is on 100k and had a new clutch already on 60k. Not noticed a problem myself and have just always been used to it, always been like it since 88k when I got it 👍
Ah bugger...thought this was a task that I'd have a go at doing myself. That was until you mentioned supporting bar and hoist across the engine to take its weight! Great video anyway
Not sure if you guys cares but if you're bored like me atm then you can watch all the new series on InstaFlixxer. Have been streaming with my brother for the last few days =)
Think the pressure plate was causing the slipping of the clutch because the friction plate was not worn down to the rivet's, pressure plate having weakened also uneven loading.
I have the same model...I had my clutch slav cylinder changed as there was no compression... gear goes in fine when engine off but when the engine is on it crunches when going from 1st into second...fine in all other gears.. Is it clutch problems or gearbox?
Hi Rob, good video, looking into doing my own. Just to mention sometihng, there is actually a drain plug at 7:53 it's that weird looking nut below the fill hex, only know this from doing the Fiesta (well it's what I used it for!)
Nice detailed video, what I was looking for when you test drive the car. I've had my clutch changed 3yrs ago and covered only about 20k. Suddenly clutch biting point gone high, next day struggled going into gear & started over revving! One garage said maybe because I didn't change the slave cylinder when I got clutch done has caused this and will need to do full kit. I'm baffled as it was a genuine ford clutch any ideas?
I always replace everything including the concentric slave cylinder. There are many reasons for this including parts failure & driving styles. More will be revealed when your garage get the gearbox out. Thanks for watching
My focus is doing exactly the same. But how much do you think I should be paying my local garage 🤔..is it a pricey job? ...thanks mate 🇬🇧..all your videos are awesome 👌
You would have to ask your local garages. Probably anything from £500 to £700, more if it’s a diesel when the dual mass flywheel would need changing at the same time
Hey Steve it's been real cold. I can't have the heater on too long because you can't hear the phone ringing 😂 I wouldn't fancy doing any clutch on the floor anymore, I'm not flexible enough 😊
Hi rob I have a 20l petrol focus 2007 I had a noise from the clutch release bearing for the last 3 years done 83 000 do you think the clutch is still ok no slipping yet on it
Hello! Pushing hard to get in gears, mostly when in gear at high rpm and upshifting with grinding noises, what should I worry about? Only the clutch kit or also the gearbox itself? I have a focus mk2 1.6tdci with original clutch kit and it is not slipping but changing gears is more than a challenge.. thank you!
hi rob great part 1 question for you I have to change my daughters exhaust on her corsa 1.2 if I have to change any of the nuts are they normal nut cheers
Hi Stuart, the front pipe nuts will probably be corroded, they are a normal metric thread but are like a brass coated thing so should come off, you may have to heat them. Just get yourself an exhaust fitting kit from your local parts shop. It'll have all you need.
Do you recommend getting the tracking done again after taking the ball joints off? Local tracking company near me say the tracking will be out every time, but I think they're just after the £25 each time, lol.
Hey rob another top video mate keep it up. With this car if there is no drain bolt for gearbox oil how would you drain oil say if you just wanted to change oil?
Ehm... there is drain bolt. It's standard Ford's IB5 gearbox, i have exactly the same on my mk1 1.8 Focus and i changed the gearbox oil abouth two months ago.. It's the greasy bolt with the kinda two-step head at the bottom left of the screen at 7:56.
One Auto, thanks for that just got back from work on the way home losing power in most gears then out the blue it picked up speed and worked few every gear fine pulls fine now. But every now and then would lack in 2nd then pick up speed so far 10 miles later it’s been fine pulling like a train. Is there any thing else this could be I.e Diesel filter etc
Guys I have a problem. When I changed the clutch set + slave cylinder - the clutch pedal started to feel hard, and then soft, and then hard again. Even after bleeding the air out. I got a Comline clutch and after 5000miles the clutch's pressure plate broke and I changed a brand new LUK set. Also changed the master cylinder just in case. Still same. Sometimes the pedal is soft, sometimes it is hard. Also, it is hard when it lets the pedal go, something like the clutch is sticking? It shouldn't be like that with an OEM part. I am really mad.
Nice clear video again Rob, Ive got a B6 Passat 2.0Tdi that sounds like a tractor when i release the clutch pedal (its noisiest when cold) and its a dual mass flywheel too :-( first gear is hard to get. With 230k miles on it, is it time to replace the clutch or get rid of the car? Whats your best guess?
My focus clutch was slipping as if it had oil on the disc, as it got a little hotter it would actually engage more about10 seconds, i renoved it but i could see nothing wrong with it it looked almost as good as the new one. My question is could the transmission be the culprit? Has anyone else had this problem, my second thiught is coukd the flywheel be worn or need to ve shimmed
Yikes. Thats pretty cooked. You know i've done quite a few Mk1 1.6 petrols, but i've yet to do a Mk2 focus. Its so nice to do with a lift as opposed to lying on some cardboard... My method of supporting the engine from above involves a large frame made of 2x4's. I don't have one of those nice rails. He manning gear boxes in and out isn't exactly fun either...
Yep it was toast. Customer said it was a driving school car before he had it so it's seen some action. The MK2 is pretty much the same job as the MK1 so you'll have no bother. Sod laying on the cardboard. I'm too old for that now!
Great video once again mate! I've got a 56 plate with the same 1.6 engine, however if you can familiarise yourself with the leaky area around the sump at 7:27 - have you ever came across this before on these models? Mine has a leak of some kind which has trailed in the same spot, it doesn't look recent and may of happened in some point in the past but my local garage for now have cleaned the area & just said to let it develop and see if it worsens as to them it doesn't look like engine oil and does not drip onto the ground either. They reckon it may be escaped gearbox oil but I just wanted your opinion first before I take it any further with shelling out for replacement seals, gaskets and the like. Many thanks :)
On a flip side that's the way I see it as well, I've always checked under the car when I do regular tyre, oil, water checks etc. It was just one of those that stood out a bit but has not worsened in the time I've had it. Thanks mate!
That's one thing we don't see much of in the States...a clutch. Most everything we drive are automatics. A shame really, I'd like to have more choices. That transmission gave you a bit of work but once you got to the clutch it was pretty easy to see the worn parts. I'll be back for part two!
Hi Wyatt, the majority of vehicles I see are manual transmissions so clutch changes are a regular thing. Did u ever receive my sticker? I still haven't got yours. Stay tuned buddy 👍
I received your sticker last week and sent one of my stickers to you. If you don't receive it within the week let me know and I will send another one. I hope you get it.
Great vid wish i had found it a few weeks ago just done a 1.8 one. Not ideal on the drive the rear bolts were a pig to get on the bell housing also had the same o/s shaft seized in hub ended up having to remove the lot and press it out. And all for free for the in laws! The things we get roped into! Love the channel now subbed im a body man myself but dabble on the mech side also.
Great work Rob and you snatched that tranny out in no time. Yep, all of those components looked pretty bad and it'll drive like a new car once you're done with it :)
Thanks Terry. Those transmissions aren't to bad to do. Working on top takes a bit of time to dig through the air box, battery tray and wiring but underneath is very accessible. Stay tuned mate 👍
One Auto, my clutch is slipping so i left it at my friends house its a Ford Focus 2008 Titanium 1.6 petrol.... how much it the average price of getting it Sorted?
First thought... that transmission looks to be buried & will be a pain to get at / out! Second thought... that wasn't too bad! Third thought... beer break! =)
Hi Thomas, yes they're pretty straightforward as far as clutches go. Underneath is very accessible. I wish I could have beer breaks 😂 if I touched a drop during the day it would send me dooo lally!!
Brilliant video! What's the reason for undoing the starter bolts? Cheers
You just sorted out all my problems, thank you so much.
Quick question mate, what's the labour charge for this job?
Very informative. Really like your straight forward description. I actually watched part one and two. Great.

It takes a while heating up your shop with those high ceilings but you don't have to worry about it getting too hot.
That's true on a hot day (which ain't that often) everyone comments how cool it is inside the shop.

Sounds like you got a synchromesh problem inside the gearbox. Needs removing and repairing.

Haha, that was a good one. The Duratec HE engine has a timing chain that never needs replacement. Got 250k on my chain now.
If it's an older Zetec engine, it's probably an engine out job cause it's under the engine mount.
@@JohnDoe-zr6bk Interesting. Mine is a 1.4 petrol engine and has a belt. Probably there are several engine mdels.

Hard to say without hearing/feeling the problem. I would prepare yourself for a gearbox repair, clutch and dual mass flywheel

Did you have any issues with the harmonic balancer lacking the timing sign on it ? I am not sure if it is the case with this engine too.
You talking about how the crank has no woodruff key between it and the harmonic balancer?
Yes, exactly :)
Yes it took a highly paid engineer to design that crappy idea!
This vid is brilliant makes it so easy thank you
Do you recommend getting the tracking done again after taking the ball joints off? Local tracking company near me say the tracking will be out every time, but I think they're just after the £25 each time, lol.
