@@Mike77154 He was a talented man for sure. He originally started out as a percussionist which explains so much - why he played the way he did. Damned good keyboardist also. We all used to get together in a friend's basement on the CrossBronx Expressway; some absolutely great memories right there. He was a good friend and mentor who introduced me to some amazing players and did so much to put the jazz in my then heavy rock styling.

Dave Valentin Damnnnnnnnnnnnn Best Flute I can remember hearing!! Abraham Labories on Bass Ok as I continue to Listen there is nothing but Great Talent on this Stage!!
This is an amazing Rio Funk version, this was shot 29 years ago and it's still one of the best. I was learning this tune when I was studying in the guitar college in 2004 Insane level of musicianship.
Right on! Of the myriad versions of that song I have seen/heard there is only one that I dig as much as this one. I'm talking about Lee's 2009 performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival, a very energetic blues-rock-fusion rendition. This one in Montreal sits closer to its Latin beat origins but there's already an undertone of something heavier in it. Nicely done.
That line Abe was playing at 7:30 was absolute fire, not to mention that pocket the drummer was in. My favorite part for sure and I love this song through and through.
Look what happens when some one is having fun and they share. Blast the funk turn it a loose' no mercy take the roof off the sucker. Thanks lee you got the BEAT shouda seen my feet. Ultra cool space truckin.
GRP was my first ever concert. I was 4 years old and saw them at the Circle Star Theater, San Carlos CA around his time period. I still remember Lee entering the stage like it was yesterday. Amazing group. Abe is an absolute BEAST!
Mein Gott, was für tolle und begnadete Musiker!! Lee Ritenour is slapping, Wonderful, the Pianist and Flötist are wonderfull, The Bassist remembers me to Abe Laboriel. I think, it is Awful!!!! Realy, Echt!!...Danke!!
I just love how the spirit of Abe Laboriel's solo changed everything. I'm so glad that drummer joined in and he coined in properly. Not many people reach Abe's age and none the less can do what he do while doing what he loves to do. This guy is truly a blessing. And to my ignorance I actually didn't like him or his playing. Since then, I've grown as a respectable musician and see why he plays why he does. He plays how his soul feels...like a child with candy in one hand and a toy in the other :)
Look at the sheer feeling and emotion from the soul that comes out through their instruments! Pure feeling is what makes a great musician. What an electronic atmosphere they create! 👏
When the Divine gives you a gift, you work hard, give your all, blood, sweat & tears & stay humble… this is the product… timeless divinely inspired straight to the heart M U S I C 🤩
I watched this exact show on TV and decided that Bass was the thing for me :-) Started to buy all Kononia LP's i could find - Nick Beggs and Mark King helped a lot too.. Later Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
nEVEr saw this concert before, i have this LP and CD, ALL MY FAVORITE PLAYERS, MR VALENTIN, MR GRUSIN, AND THE GREAT ERNIE WATTS, OF COURSE MR LABORIEL ON BASS, AND MY FAVPRITE QUITAR PLAYER MR RITENOUR, WHOM I SAW WAY BACK IN DC MAYBE 1979, WAS GETTING INTO THIS TYPE OF MUSIC, WHO IS THE DRUMMER, WECKL..GREAT TUNE
Aguara Guazu I only heard through a friend this wonderful flautist had passed I felt very old and mortal, but thank you for all the music Dave still got all my GRP vinyl to listen to R.I.P Dave
It was a great loss to the jazz world as a whole and to Latin jazz in particular (both when he died and when his first stroke left him unable to perform). But the music he made lives on. It was a great treat for me to find this video of him performing with Lee Ritenour today.
I had totally forgotten this track, then it popped in after taking a stroll thru snarky puppy Lingus, it takes me straight back to uni getting blazed up with friends, what a laugh that shit was xD
Sad to see Dave Valentin in his then hey day....We all hope his return to health sees him back on the set...Dave Grusin is a legend so is Benoit...and ever gyrating Abraham Laboriel is amazing as always...and as for Rit he is in that echelon shared only by a handful and Ernie Watts 1000 watt performer !!
Abe Laboriel is just such a wonderful player. And that kid on stage with him - Ritenour? - might make it some day. 😂 😂 On the serious side: Rio is a fantastic album.
Fun fact: few brazilians, even cariocas (Rio citizens) know this song. Most of them because the Gm intro was the opening soundtrack of an TV GLOBO educational program: "Telecurso 2º Grau". Nice to see/listen Dave Benoit in this tune too!
Dave Benoit on piano is phenomenal!!!
I'm a 1963 👶 and love the music today just as it was yesterday and more TOMORROW
yes!
Abraham Laboriel sir...its an honor seeing you do your thing. Rest well, dear sir
Abraham Laboriel is a phenomenal bassist. Still going at age 75 I think.
It's a beautiful thing when everyone speaks the same language!
RIP... my old friend ... David Valentin on flute.
Ritenour continues to be an influence on my playing 40 years later ;-)
Its a litte sad that he wants to be saxophonist in first place instead of flute player
