Yes, isn’t Gary Novak superb! Sometimes the best musicians leave lots of space though when you see him with Chick Corea, he is quite capable of filling up the space
Who would ever have thought 'funk' could be like this, ( that is, if I know what funk really is)? For me, funk is raw. Funk is the other side of something unsaid but truly magnetic. I'm still stuck, Mr. Ritenour.
The man on bass was Abraham Laboriel, father of Paul McCartney/Wings current percussion/drummer.....he/Abe was the awesome bassist Lee used during his Record Plant sessions in LA in the 80's on which an incredible DVD was released.....Dave Grusin was also on it.
This is marvelous...listened to a whole mess of Ritenour in the 80's. If you really want a great musical adventure, listen to drummer Gary Novak with Chick Corea's Elektric Band 2.
I love the original night rhytms on cd with marcus miller on bass ernie watts on sax, dave gruisin on keys and the late carlos vega on drumms great song, great musicians
You got almost all of the players involved in making of this memorable tune on the original release correctly, except for the drummer. It was the incomparable Omar Hakim, and not the late, great Carlos Vega.
@@rezathenightfly You're right, Omar Hakim played the drums on the record. Still have the CD ... 😉 But may be Carlos played the drums live? Perhaps somebody knows?
No disrespect intended. I simply consider Carlos as one of the elite players. His style was that of a musical quality...not just tasteful fills and grooves, but drum fills that became part of the song as much as a melody line. I'm not familiar with this drummer but he is rock solid with a real nice natural sound. Certainly worthy of praise.
I like all the drummers that ever played this tune but Gary's groove is just fat and solid....much more so than all the other versions I've seen. JR John Robinson school of laying it down. Nice.
@wackyshredder :Hi ! You're right, this guitar is an electric-acoustic nylon strings SADOWSKY, a Crafter that's in manhattan. Many Brasilians' musicians are playing with the same guitar (I even suppose that Lee Ritenour had showed it to Djavan, or Djavan had showed it to Lee, cause it's after having played "Asa" together that both are using a Sadowsky ). I hope beeing able to buy one soon or late. I know that I can still buy one cause I've looked the Sadowsky's guitars on my computer. BYE !
Great upload, thank you for letting us know this performance. Just as a suggestion, and I could be wrong, I believe that the last name of the bass player is "Laboriel", Abraham "Abe" Laboriel, well known bassist generally associated with smooth jazz musicians like Al Jarreau.
This is a video where the average time period for any single camera shot or focus is about 6 seconds. Forget about Lee and Ernie geeting one or two camera angles for their respective solos. We are not allowed a repreive so we can appreciate the visuals because we have a short attention span is imposed on us.
@ianidinuse ;Hi, my friend ! For sure, the best versions of this song are played with nylon strings Guitars ; we can't say that it is "classical guitars", cause "it's a solid-body nylon that has a hybrid sound combining acoustic & electric "colors"" (said Lee Ritenour) but I've always heard it played on a solid-body electric-acoustic guitar;sometimes, it was a Gibson Chet Atkins nylon, sometimes a Sadowski, and even once (I'm proud of that, cause I got the same guitar), a Godin Multiac Duet....
You mean how the drums on the original was played? If that’s what you mean, I have to break it to you that it wasn't Carlos Vega who played the drums on the original track but Omar Hakim.
@ianidinuse :Hi, my friend ! Like it's written somewhere, that guitar is a Sadowsky, electric-acoustic Guitar crafted in Manhattan. Many great guitarists got one (Gilberto Gil, Djavan, and others, not only Brasilian's players, but I forgot their names). I'd love to have the same one, but it coasts something like 2500 euros. It it still in production, but I think that you must command one to have that great guitar. Not sure ! I'm sure of the rest of what I've written.Later. BYE !
Like a baby chick bursting its shell to all that's wonderful... then realizing, asking "... can it stay this way?? " Then go straight to the funk. Lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gary Novak's drum progression and groove is similar to that used by Hillary Jones in the European Pori Festival around the same time, but Hillary puts a bit more physicality and the mixing seems to give the drumming in Pori more bandwidth and volume. Great musicianship.....I never heard how Carlos Vega interpreted the beat and fills.....assume there is a live performance with him as drummer somewhere out there.
@ianidinuse :Those guitars are made to be amplified, principally, you can play just for working or for fun, you'll hear it enough, but it's not like the real electric-acoustics, so the mics that are used have many importance. I know that the Gibson Chet Atkins got 1 piezo, but a hexaphonique 1, & there's no equalizer, there's a volume for each string. In the Sadowski, don't know, but in the Godin,2 ways,a piezo & a condensator mic,& you can mix the 2 to have a clear but warm sound.Later ! BYE, man!
I think that it is not fair to Gary, writing he isn't swinging. Well i think he nails it. He really swings and grooves 100% i've been thinking so since the first time i heard this performance. Wow, Gary swings in this one. And of course Abe and the other guys.
I know I'm a bit late to the party(your comment)but Gary is awesome, for a guy all of 22 at the time, he's killing it,plus goes on to become a monster in the jazz/fusion world.🥁❤
2024 who's still listening?
I can't get enough this. Stay on repeat for yr
Love Garys drumming, nice, solid, steady and great feel, he allows the other players to shine, nice work! :-)
Holy shit.... The saxophonist is Ernie Watts.... This is great.
Laboriel em todas!! Ernie que Sax!!
What a clip - great to see Ernie given his platform.... I've seen him a few times live - unforgettable.
He is probably my favorite sax player.
Ernie watts on sax! So smooth!
Wonderful DVD! I have it autographed by Lee Ritenuor!🖐✋👌🤞
That drummer really knows his stuff
This is such a lovely tune I'm absolutely low away by the flawless beauty of it
Superb playing by Gary Novak. Huge rhythm pocket for the band to play in!
Yes, isn’t Gary Novak superb! Sometimes the best musicians leave lots of space though when you see him with Chick Corea, he is quite capable of filling up the space
Ernie Watts is legend!
make me eternally one with this live play. this is heaven..
I loved this music. And I love yet. It's marvelous.
Great funk work by the drummer and the bassist combo
Abraham laboriel is a beast on that bass. Love that riff and tone . Whole band locked in ❤
ILove You Bassist Abraham L... 😍😍
The drummer is awesome! Great supple groove.
Who would ever have thought 'funk' could be like this, ( that is, if I know what funk really is)? For me, funk is raw. Funk is the other side of something unsaid but truly magnetic. I'm still stuck, Mr. Ritenour.
I bought this DVD many years ago just because of the Bass player 😉
Thanks so much for sharing this track. I really like every musician in this clip.

wonderful spectacle

Abe is the most recorded bassist of all time. If you've heard any quantity of music anytime since 1970 or so, you've heard Abe more than once.
what a lovely light touch.......................djc
fantastico
@arthur84 yes , it is a nylon string. my guess is that it's an Ibanez Lee Ritenour Signature guitar. i dont think its in production anymore.
Abe Laboriel Sr layin down the fat bass line, killer.

The drummer is Gary Novak, does lots of Jazz stuff. Very fine and eloquent drummer
ha, most definately man.
no one makes 'em as smooth as lee.

Yeah...Walter Becker (Steely Dan) plays one quite often. Great stuff.
5:06 Yeah!🔥
2019🤗
soundtrack of montreal jazz festival??
Nobody laid this song down like Carlos Vega. He is missed.

Which version would that be?
@@connorm955 As I wrote: the original version.

I think that it is not fair to Gary, writing he isn't swinging.

Gary Novak 🥁
Yamaha TRB = Respect.
Abraham's son is the long time touring drummer for Paul McCartney.
Who’s the cat on the pagan skins? His grove is way kool!
@snoobeagle yes! forgot about that xD
Cany anyone imagine this :
Drummer : Simon Phillips
Guitarist : Lee Ritenour
Bass : Marcus Miller
Keyboard : Dave Grusin
Saxophone : Ernie Watts
Abe laboriel is better than Miller
This version is better with Abraham on bass
Gary novak > Simon phillips
Steve Gadd or Vinnie Colaiuta instead of Simon Phillips 😊
@lorenzino1 I see.. thank you! This song sounds best played with a nylon stringed guitar!
whos the drummer
He's tuff! ❤ him and that bassist is locked in 🎉
Sounds like Rippingtons
is that a nylon string electric guitar?? sounds like a nylon to me.:D
Yes, It’s a Sadowsky Nylon-Electric guitar. An instrument made by Master Luthier, Roger Sadowsky, in NYC; frequently associated with Lee Ritenour.
Who is the sax player? Lovely tone.
.
Ernie Watts
Anyone know that the intro music is?
Check out the man's band...
The drum
someone can please tell me,
what is the name of the song in the begining?
Gelson henriquez shepard I could be wrong, but sounds like "Moose the Mooche" by Charlie Parker

0:40
