I LOVE this song. It is one of the best. I saw Dave Mason a few times in the 1970s. Great shows. I took my two year old daughter to the second one.🙂 A nice little outdoor concert.
Because my name is also Dave Mason, I HAD to see him when he did a concert near where I live. Awesome concert! Also, after the concert, I waited in the autograph line and presented him with an autographed picture of myself. (Couldn’t resist 😀) I’m just grateful for the part he played in getting our name into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
Saw Dave Mason in a little hole the wall in Honolulu in the 90s . He was great . I told him great show and he actually stopped said thank you . I know it seems silly but that actually meant a lot to me especially being such a big fan .
Always LOVED Dave Mason! Alone Together..Great album. He was one of the opening act at the Bicentennial Elton John show I was at in Foxboro Mass Patriots Stadium....1976..Duh! Outrageous! Thank you for the lesson! Ray Boston 👍🏻😉
Andy, there are dozens of guys and girls that give youtube guitar lessons. That being said, I think you are the BEST and easiest to follow. You explain things clearly with a bit of story and entertainment. You are masterful on guitar! I hope you can keep it up for years to come. John
Hello Andy...I mean this in the most flattering way possible. I have watched you for a long time and it just hit me that you are as perfectly precise and controlled with feeling and emotion on your guitar as say Neil Peart on drums or Eric Johnson on guitar. You without doubt are the best guitar teacher on TH-cam, and you really go the extra steps to even make your instruments sound as excellent as possible to give us everything we need to get the most out of your lessons. May we start calling you Professor?? :) Donated and thank you sir!
- I couldnt agree more! Andy you once did a lesson on I can tell you why by the Eagles. It was awesome!! however i cant find it anymore. I am so bummed. Where did it go?
@@watchervision4391 If his is the case, then it seems rather trivial since exposure to instruction would naturally draw someone to the original. Unless Don Henley is planning tutorials.
I grew up listening to this song, for many years. It's one of my favorites. Easy to sing but, not so easy to play. )) Thank You, for a wonderful, excellent, informative lesson, on this timeless golden song.
Amazingly just out of the blue last week I started singing this, then sat down to see if I could play it which kept me up all night. Your lesson really nails it. Thanks, great tune.
This is a wonderful lesson, and I learned about Nashville tuning, too. I really appreciate that. I would make just one suggestion, and please understand how grateful I am for the time you took to make the lesson, but if you were ever thinking of redoing it or adding to it, one thought I had is that it would help if you could sing it, at least in walking us through the quick chord changes. As you said, on this song, it's easier to be prompted by the words than the count where the chord changes are concerned, so hearing them, especially once you get to the chorus, would make things easier. But I think I figured it out anyway, and I wanted to say thank you very much for sharing your skill and knowledge with us. This song alone makes my 12-string worth having!
I really like the way you present the music, and adding a little background to the artist history. Been fan for awhile decided to subscribe. If I ever get half as good as you I’d be happy with that. Please keep it up really appreciate it! Love this song
Well first of all, I just can't seem to get enough of this song. I think it went through my head for about 3 days almost non stop. Then, I thought, how the heck can I play that on a regular guitar and make it sound like that? But wait!!!! There's more!!!!! Thank God you showed up and showed us how it's done. I just didn't think, oh hey, maybe it's done in an open tuning. Thanks so much for showing us this. Now if I can only sing it with half the "you know what" that Dave has. He's just got such a strong athoratative voice. Take care and thanks again. Marc Trainor.
Your lessons are simply the best because if it's not exactly like the recorded version it's a better arrangement than the recorded version, which to me is the point of acoustic covers if you're lucky, aka good. Finally, your tone is always inspiring. That's half the battle that most people miss.
I understand that. I played in a rock cover band over the last year on a tube amp with analog pedals and there were nights (not always) when I had the David Gilmour tone and mojo working so well for Comfortably Numb that I could freelance off his melody and bring people up out of their seats. They could feel me feeling the amp feel the guitar just crying. Absolute magic. It's like Miles Davis said, if I can't get my tone, I can't play, I can't get paid, I can't get laid, it all goes to hell. The killer pedal for me ironically is compression. A bit of squish gives a lot of controllable feedback and sustain both dirty and clean. Anyway, great work, love your stuff and it's a huge help.
Gorgeous ! Been afraid to tune my acoustic up to open E, but gonna do it now with my practice guitar; should be ok with light gauge strings. (ps. "Only you know and I know"). Love the background info you provide as well. Dave Mason also had a tenure with Fleetwood Mac, during one of Lindsay's hiatuses. lol
Hey Andy! Would love to see you do a lesson on Dave Mason's, All Along The Watchtower which many people consider to be the best rendition of this song. Take care, Garry
This is great thx. What a great song. Personally, not wanting to bring a separately tuned guitar to play this one wonderful song to gigs...I used to use standard tuning and simply slide a first position E chord up and down the neck. Not exact but pretty close keeping the 1st and 2nd strings open and jangly. If you have second guitarist they could play the higher inversions to help. Indeed, strumming and feel is still really important. PS _ Love Dave Mason’s voice. Thx
Boss...came across this after your brilliant Little Martha lesson and figured, hey another classic in open E! (tho I wimp out and and use open D capo 2). Beautiful song, and well taught. And speaking of Dave Mason, have you ever seen his electric version of Watchtower? Absolutely killer...would be cool lesson. Thanks!
Thanks for the explanation of Nashville tuning. Really had that 12 string chime. May go that way with my old Yamaha. Didn’t realize this wasn’t written by Dave Mason. Great choice and sound quality as usual.
Your a great teacher,I'm brand new at the guitar but your making it so easy & your easy going demeanor & your voice? NICE! THANK~YOU I had to subscribe, looking forward to your other videos ♡
Just a music major geek observation. as you are in an open E tuning, I'd recommend referring to the strings as 6th, 4th, 3rd, etc, as they are no longer D, G, etc due to the open tuning. It might alleviate some confusion for students. Example, Strings now E B E G# B E, intended constructively. Great production value, and playing.
Ive been working on this song for almost 2 yrs off and on. Jeezus! Tough pattern for sure. Im also tring Only You know and I know. Any lessons coming up? Other You Tube vids - not great. I know you'll cover it in detail. Thanks
Thanks. I'm happy that you're getting something from my videos. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos and I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
Outstanding lesson as usual. I'm trying to learn this but I'm having a hard time seeing your finger placement for the chords. Especially your pinky....
OK - You have to give credit where credit is due. Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge Dave Mason fan. Never miss a concert when he plays locally. But alas - Dave didn't write this. Jim Krueger did. Dave played with Jim shortly after leaving Traffic. Jim wrote it, Dave made it famous. Jim also started writing How do I get to heavan. Sadly, Jim passed before finishing it. Dave completed it. Every time I hear it I think of all the folks who are no longer in my life. Also - on another note, Certified Live is my favorite album - just saying.
Awesome lesson but I have to ask. If you are playing in open E. Would it be easier on the guitar and strings (especially a 12 string) to tune to open D with a capo on the 2nd fret? Chord shapes played as capo is the nut. I understand the up tunings aren't that bad but I've only got 1 eye left as it is. Lol
I discovered that open D with a capo works on my 12 string but the finger room on the frets further up the neck makes a bit of a difference than playing it in open E.
Is it possible to use a capo somewhere on the fretboard and play different chords? There is no way I'm going to tune to open E. My ear is not capable of doing that...
Saw the sheet music before and it seems it's not in 4/4, but I don't recall the time signature. Of course, I'm not quite good enough to confidently count it. Rats!!!
Just a thought. It is very hard to see which fingers you are pressing on the fret board. Anyway you can left the fingers a bit that are not doing anything? Your maybe fingering 2 or May 3 fingers but often looks like all 4 are on the feet board.

I've never heard another song like this. When I first heard it I couldn't even tell what was happening but I loved it.

Ahhh yes I remember this fantastic song in the summer of 77! Thank you for sharing it!

Wow, thanks!
Best guitar teacher out there!
The playing and sound of your Taylor is magic to listen to, especially as I remember the words...

My 200 Yamaha sounds just as good I've tried them all😎✌

I played this out years ago in a two piece. Hung it up. This brings back memories.
Such a sad song; still chokes me up to listen to it. Great lesson as always.
Gorgeous, clean guitar sound.
I really enjoy the wealth of information in addition to your excellent teaching! Thank you so much!!!

Tuning was advanced for that era with the exception of Joni Mitchell...nice information, great lesson!
I was about 4 years old when it came out. I heard it on my little radio and in the car and I loved the song and still do. I have it on ituned
Rock on Dave Mason...
I can "get by" playing this song on my guitar - trying to convert it to my uke now. This really helped me!

Really nice. Would a Mystic Traveler arrangement be difficult?
For the record, the guy who wrote this song, Jim Krueger, pronounced his name like Kreeger.
would this sound equally good with an electric guitar?
