i saw gatemouth in 1981, in a club called the belle star, in colden, ny. my then wife were sitting at a large table, waiting for the show to begin. then a lady came over and asked if she and her husband could sit at our table. we said sure, and it was mr brown's wife. he came over and introduced himself. they sat with us for the rest of the night between sets. the show was great, and they were the nicest couple. i will never forget that.
Gate could play anything ..... the best multi instrumentalist ever!!
He is the real deal, a wise man, and a great musician. Take heed folks.

This man was truly great...in all areas of his life..down to earth, and for real.
I saw Gatemouth three X's. Twice on the "Blues Cruise" trips out of lower
Manhattan, and at the Beacon Theatre with Levon Helm. First time was after the "Long Way Home" C.D. Second time after the "Gate Swings" C.D. A good down to earth man, very friendly, and a great musician. The home interview is wonderful. I miss Gate very much. R.I.P.
Always heard his man had an incredible work ethic on top of his amazing talent.
I miss my friend and my surrogate father.......Gabe is a class act with a big heart which exudes truth never holds back and tells it like it is "Truth". His writing/composing performing his many songs are as diverse as he is......what a personable man who took me under his wing and we spent hours together daily when he was not on the road which is his greatest passion. His love of classic cars are indicative of his romantic side....he is hard on the outside and warm and soft on the inside.....Love ya Gate sorry you are a victim of Katrina.....still salute your waterfront home everytime I pass by.

Your words for him ring with the truth of his profoundly enlightened music. Gate was vibrating on a high level like a saint. A crusty ole cantankerous saint. I never got that close to him but i loved him with my heart.

I met this guy my 1st yr at OU after shooting B&W 35mm and producing the film and contact sheets in my black/bathroom...how I made a living and started my business as a freelancer. This man is so my blues hero I can't think of but one other, Mr BB King that I would put in a class with at the top of the class.... a true artist of artists.

One of my first blues records was a Clarence Gatemouth Brown Lp, had the track " Pressure Cooker" on there, seriously funky. Amazing musician.

I saw Gatemouth almost every time he came to DFW (probably 15 - 20 shows). I got to have several chats with him. One time I asked him about recording with Ali Farka Touré & Ry Cooder. He just shook his head and chuckled "Ahh, those crazy Africans!" He plays percussive rhythm guitar on "Diaraby" which is PRI's "The World" theme song. . . mesmerizing.
Their questions are perfect.

Many years ago I heard Gatemouth LIVE at the Village Gate in NYC. He was outrages! The band was on point.

In the mid 90's he and his band spent a few hours at the truck stop where I worked while their tour bus was being repaired. I worked the shoe shine stand and shined 2 pairs of his boots. Since he played most genres of music, I asked him which was his favorite. He said "Whatever I'm playing at the moment". We had some interesting chitchat, he tipped well, then joined me in the restaurant and bought me dinner.

Frank Zappa was a fan of many of Gatemouth's contemporaries. He bemoaned the fact that many of them ended up working in gas stations to support themselves because no one wanted to hear them after rock'n'roll hit in the 60s. Gatemouth was one of the survivors, and rightly so.

These youngsters are getting an education and getting a different Viewpoint from somebody who was around long before they were born making music I like this you're educating the children of today that's what we need learn from the elderly or the older group from way before they are teachers not what we have in school they were here and there and they knew what it was like to have a life before we ever knew

Music was good to clarence he was always in demand in some fashion on some insturment with all his peers respect in tact
Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home. He died shortly thereafter. I'm sure he was just heart broken. He was a massive talent with more than enough dues paid to back it up.

“Creative noise is no good for you” highs and lows to music. Develop on your own. Don’t listen to it. You can Tell right from wrong…clowning - everybody can’t be a leader-be firm but be good-know what your doing-they know what I want and that’s what they do. No-two leaders-can’t have two kings on one throne-one leader points other people as to what he wants done. Rest, no booze, no drugs, be prepared for work-no partying-get rest-party as you perform.
I smoked pot with Ole gate mouth on the side of LSU at the bar many times. Great man.I never knew he was famous. He was just the old Black guy with the hat the belt buckle and the cowboy boots.good time's

One guitar-one fiddle…you don’t need all those guitars to make a statement. 1966 Gibson Firebird, leather pick guard…no naming no guitar. Drummer- don’t drag it, don’t rush it, pay attention to leader, play attention to dynamics.
