Poor Canned Heat. So good of them to use their fame to bring an American great to us all. Poor Gate was not used to having to actually wave off a Blues pickup band. :) But they followed despite their massive fame at that time. As good as the music is? Half of Gate's magic was in the audience's relationship. Which is not here in this video. Lord, I do miss him.
Dude had an ego problem. Tells one of the biggest bands at the time to be quiet so he can bring them in with some rudimentary harp licks… he insisted on being the frontman of a band known for intentionally not having a frontman. Not impressed by this one.
Canned Heat helped revive Blues greats like Gatemouth, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins and several more. Hite was a Blues Aficionado as was Vestine, They searched the country side for blues albums and players. Bob had a massive record collection that would humble the best of them. I had the great fortune to catch Gate perform and during one of his shows he was on a break and just hanging out in the hallway of the college he was playing at, all by himself, so i said," what the hell i'm a fan, a harp player and blues lover, I have to talk to him!". So i just walked up to him and said hi, how's the show going tonight? Well we talked for 15 minutes and he was the most humble, supportive, and kindest person. He finally looked up at his watch and said, whoa, i have to get back on stage. He signed a poster i had pulled off the wall and said thanks for coming to the show. He played mandolin, guitar and harp that night. Such a wonderful memory in my life.

I had the honor to get to know Gate from the mid 80' till he passed. He always told me he thought music could heal and bring people together unlike anything else. He let me walk Him out on stage on his last New York gig at BB King's place and told the crowd how much He appreciated me driving from North Carolina to be with Him. I have never been so honored. He will always be The Man!!
What a privilege to be there live!! Thank god for this video an the blues In me it’s ALIVE an I’m so grateful to my dad for introducing me to it from a small kid listening in his big CHEV. BEAUTIFUL ❤
I had never seen Gatemouth play the harmonica, had only seen him play guitar and violin. Man, what a musician, a true multi-instrumentalist. I'm so impressed now!
canned heat toco muchas veces en mexico muchos tuvimos la fortuna de verlos en vivo, un grupo que te tocaba lo mismo en woodstok que en un hoyo fonky de mexico city gracias por tanto blues y boogie.
About 30 years ago I was in a record store and I came across a CD of Gatemouth. I had no idea who he was or what kind of music he made. I just thought I'd buy it and check it out. I'm glad I did.
Canned Heat You have my Absolute Blues and total inspiration cuz I believe too my blues music can great healing and recovery of all Hurts n Pains from Life ! Just lay it on,!!

Kay Raedclyffe I meet Gatemouth in early 1980's at Christie's music store in Slidell,La. We become good friends and I recovered his Les Paul after it was stolen from him from a trashbag punk.
Saw him live in Houston. Unforgettable. Such a wonderful showman. He played every instrument and all like a maestro. An East Texas treasure. Heat must have been intimidated.
Got to sing with and share the stage with Clarence back in the 90s, he let ME sing Mojo!.... sad that he faced such a sad end; such an incredible musician and genuinely nice man.
I agree. One of the nicest dudes I ever met. Classy and incredibly talented. I'm unfamiliar with his demise and I don't think I want to know, I'd rather remember him as he was when I was fortunate enough to hear him play and hang out with him and his posse for awhile.
Eso tan maravilloso que tiene la música, que nos sorprende y hace que tus sentidos exploten al máximo, haciendo que se erise la piel...Saludos Santiago de Chile
Clarence Gatemouth Brown on the harmonica, it's a pro ! And with Canned Heat, nothing to throw. Thanks ! Clarence Gatemouth Brown à l'harmonica, c'est un pro ! Et avec Canned Heat, rien à jeter. Merci !
Yes you can. If you had practiced for 20min everyday since writing this you’d be this good! What he’s playing is not very difficult, it just takes practice.
@@norfolknwhey4787 It's been 4 years since my post and I never stopped practicing. My only question while playing with other musicians is "what key are we in?" before the song begins. It is no longer a challenge to listen to music on the radio, test a couple of keys and then simply play along. My wife has always loved to hear me play,
“Gatemouth” was an amazing musician, he truly rocked every instrument he touched not anyone left like him now. Never got his due, not just a blues man he could play any kind of American music.
Maestros del boogie-woogie, diplimados en blues, con una electrificación espectacular, una banda de referencia Gracias por su visión de la música negra
These Black Texas blues players sure have derp roots in Texas. They never let prejudice keep them from being the stars they are... deep in the heart if Texas. Very appreciated by all.
I knew his brother Bobby well. They're from here in Orange Texas. Well...their family moved here way back when. He's buried here. His brother could play and sing too.
I played this video for my precious grand boys other day, 3 yrs old & 1 & half, and 3 yr old started shaking it & boogie down just like Clarence is getting down... Then the baby started to act like he was playin the harmonica and stomping his lil foot to every beat... I WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZED AT HOW MUCH THEY LOVED THE MUSIC!!! so now I'm gonna go n get both of them instruments this weekend so they can play whenever they want to at Memaws house.
I never got to play with Gatemouth Brown. But my relationship with Canned Heat goes back to 1967 when I bought the orange album, with Al Wilson. I took classmates to the Cafe Au Gogo in 1968 to hear them live, after our graduation party. After Al died my relationship was discontinued until 1974, when I was working at a masonry-supply company, and by mere coincidence one of the contractors I sometimes serviced was Al Wilson's father, a mason in Belmont, Mass. We didn't talk much about Al, because he was taking the reported suicide very hard. In 1985-6, when Henry Vestine came to Eugene Oregon where I was getting my BA at U-Oregon. When Henry wasn't away with the Heat, he was playing in my band, Church of the Blues. He was even my roommate for several months. Once I graduated, I never saw Henry again, and he died in 1997. By 2006, I had my MA from Oklahoma State, and had "graduated" from 17 years of truck driving. My band, The Workers, was booked as co-headliner with Canned Heat, which by that time contained only Fito de la Parra, the drummer, from the original Heat, at a small winery-- "Soaring Wings"-- in Springfield Nebraska. It was May 6, but the weather was so bad, everyone went home except maybe a hundred or so people inside the winery. We played, and then Canned Heat played. And finally, 39 years after I got that pivotal LP, I got to play with Canned Heat. The next day, Fito even found me a joint! Only de la Parra, whose book chronicles the life of Canned Heat, survives today. I'm Watermelon Slim, and you can get my CDs and DVDs at www.watermelonslim- dot-com.
I was sixteen when this was recorded, wasn't there, should could've wished I were, but there just isn't another band the same, still does me the same it did back then, thanks so much.

Canned Heat have always earned the respect and support of the best blues musicians.
Awesome blues always loved canned heat especially the album Hooker and Heat when I that age. Started me on life long love of the blues
They certainly did with the great Gatemouth. What a music moment.
It was the critics that never gave them their due! They did as much for the blues as any of the British artists did!
I had the privilege of seeing him many times, but never knew he played harp. Once caught him playing drums, too…one of the true greats, Mr. Gate!
Now this is real music that feeds the heart and soul.
Been around the block a time or two. Harmonica players from way back have learned from one another. This is Jimmy Reed style. And its a Party goers delight!
You know your blues. I loved in an apartment that Jimmy Reed once lived for a short while in Oakland, CA.
I slept Clarence Gatemouth Brown... The man was phenomenal ! wow !!!

I saw Gatemouth at the Howard Street Tavern in Omaha in 1977. He was probably themost outstanding musician I have ever seen.
