This was part of a blues artists compilation decades ago. I remember repeatedly going back to Blockbuster Video to rent this on VHS. Gatemouth’s solo was my favorite to rewatch.
This is one of the great guitar instrumentals of all time! Gate was great for many years, an American treasure. I also heartily recommend Sue Foley's version, available here on TH-cam.
This was my very first theme song when I was a 14 year old disc jockey at KTLW -AM in Texas City, and it followed me to Galveston's KGBC-AM where I worked until I left for college at Tulane in New Orleans in 1958. There, by shear luck, I landed at job at WWL-AM and the theme song for that nightly program was "That's All." The program was "American Airlines Music 'til Dawn."
Used to be my brother's theme song for the mid-50's Broken Hearted Bill Cherry Show on the mighty KGBC in Galveston, Texas. Decades later, I confessed that I had accidentally sat on his missing Clarence Gatemouth Brown theme song that he loved and broke it to pieces (pre-wax). He never said a word, but he, too, was broken to pieces...
wonder if hubert and he ever did a duet of okie dokie stop-if i was asked for a DID list,,that would be on it, aside from Buddy Miles doin Texas, Alberts Shuffle from Super Session, Glazed- Earl King and Roomful (if my history has it right that was the only Roomful song ever got em close to a grammy), Johnny Winter doin' Drown in my own tears (and probably a whole lot more) Muddys three o clock in the morning.....and about 3 pages if that of more...and Paul Rishells' version of Texas also....ok-i best stop....Gate, in my opinion never got the "props" he deserved-but that could also get me to writing another list....oh! i saw Zappa's name on this page-another fave from my HIGH school daze- Peaches en regallia(sp)....and with that. i bid ya'll a fine g'night
He played with big bands a lot he loved Count Basie ectopic. And the big horn sound . God Bless I got work and know Gate in Slidell, LA last 3 years if his life
Jeff Beck's been playing without a pick, and he sounds better than ever. I know that Howlin' Wolf is the one who got Hubert to stop using a pick (that's what he said on an interview). I just can't go there yet. I usually cross-pick, alternating between my fingers and a pick.
woa. i was, and this is a true story, introduced to the Mothers of Invention by my BABYSITTER-who was a freshman in high school...i had an old "record player" the kind that had a top that lifted off, and she'd come over to baby sit(i was 10! and refused to listen to top 40 unless they were playin Mitch Ryder, Sam and Dave there was a soul station WILD) in Boston that was on a.m. and went off the air at sundown,,,,and all my little friends kept insisting i was born the wrong color (bein born in the Boogie Down Bronx we never know!) coz i preferred Booker T and the MG's on my lil black transistor radio..no taste!!!! Bobby Sherman? music? --oy. is the guy even still alive? and Neil Sedaka...eeech, We are going back to the daze where "the bosstown sound" probably saved my life-that and Boones Farm Apple Wine(ok it didnt save my life but it kept me sane if my friends had top 40 on THEIR transistors... anyone remember Moby Grape, Blue Cheer and The Ultimate Spinach??? here i am at 62 sober since 89 and i still got my album cover of Big Brother and the Holding Co,,,yeah, the one with the HA rocker cover on the front,,,,,,now i'm gonna hobble my arthritic ass into the other room and start pullin cds out...
Been playing for 62 years. Take my word for it ... Old Clarence could PLAY!!!
It's amazing how faithful Gatemouth is to the original recording here -- he mixes in some different snippets -- and the horn section sounds great!

Our band went down to San Antonio where he was appearing at a Country Club. We were playing his songs and loved this guy.

I saw him at San Jose State University one time and I fell in love with his music.

Saw him at the Michigan state fair sometime in the late 80’s. Unbelievably great player!
A unique stylist, using the capo, playing with his fingers, and coy enough that he doesn't have to sing all night.
One heck of a nice guy too. I met Gate in Dallas around 2001 very interesting man, too bad he is gone.

Great pickin' and the best Firebird EVER!!!
Will always be my fav' guitar player....forever.
I'm happy for him that he got a chance to play in front of a big band.
Wonderful!

1924 Blues Singer-Cowboy Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown was born in Vinton, LA; best known for Okie Dokie Stomp. Happy Birthday today!
And now 100 years. Your music lives on!
This clip and hearing his original recording of Okie Dokie Stomp from the Blues for Dummies CD was my introduction to Gatemouth Brown.
The best musician ever.
The very first record that I bought. It still makes me want to boogie.
Met him at Tip's in New Orleans years ago. Very nice man. Magnificent music!!!
I just love him. He’s immortal
This so refreshing.
His playing was consistently great!
Tremendous musician.
He and Hubert Sumlin convinced me to play with no pick
