Adrian's certainly a modest man of few words and very likeable. A mate of mine once worked in a guitar shop and popped into the papershop on the high street, only to find Smithy in there browsing the newspapers with his kid in a stroller. He invited him back to the shop for a cup of tea and a fiddle on the guitars. Said he was a very nice bloke. Adrian is without doubt my favourite all time guitarist. Those solos on Wicker Man, Children of the Damned, Dance of Death and countless others just kick ass. His phrasing, tone and feel are just perfect.
Fuck ye, hes my all time favorite too. My favorites are the duellists, dance of death, alexander the grrat, 22 acacia and caught somrwhere in time.from him. Hes kinda mystrrious though!! How can i knoe more about him??
Maiden is one of those "perfect" bands like AC/DC. No matter how many years pass their music is still as powerful and interesting as it was when it came out. Really a timeless band.
Stranger in a strange land to me is Adrians best solo, that silky slow start builds like a pressure cooker and then pow, right in the kisser. A hot contender for one of the best solos ever.
That Jackson is based off of a Jackson guitar that Grover Jackson made for him in 85-86. The neck (contour) is a replica of a 54 or 55 strat apparently. The original one had a neck humbucker (Dimarzio PAF) so it was a HSH config, but Adrian put a new pickguard on it, so it now looks identical to the production models (minus the wear & his signature on the headstock of course). You can see him play the original one in clips from the Somewhere on tour (86-87) & 7th Tour (1988) here on youtube. Just search for "Maiden England", and it's his main stage guitar.
@@timp.9582I dig it enough but honestly I prefer the white on white version. Now IIRC Adrian also had a duplicate model which had the synth pickup/controls which was introduced on the Somewhere in Time tour in '86 or '87.
Dave Murray & Adrian Smith is the ultimate twin guitar duo. They play off each other's solos, and even though they have such different styles, they make it work so well together. Epic stuff
I was lucky enough to meet Iron Maidens drummer Nico , he was Phil Hilbornes special guest drummer one evening years ago , I was at the Bar at the venue when he came out from behind the stage and walked over towards me , he said hello to me first , I nearly fell over , what a great guy , he bought me a pint , and we stood and talked as if we were old friends catching up. I still can't quite believe it happened , best night ever. Cheers Nico.
Adrian Smith. The reason I first picked up a guitar. Not a flashy player, but boy his phrasing and sense of groove are epic. Easily my favourite guitar player. 👍😀
Looking forward to reading his autobiography. He seems a very reserved bloke. Hope he tells interesting stories about behind the scenes and song writing. And that Jackson is gorgeous.
Amazing find Lee. Adrian is one of my teenage guitar idols and such a reclusivee guy in terms of interviews. See if you can drag him along with Dave Murray for one of your long interviews. Cheers.
Love this interwiew! How good when an interwiewer asking the good questions! Thank you! Next time please ask him about his Ibanez Destroyers from the early 80's! Oh and Lado as well! UP THE IRONS!
Agreed 100%! I assumed that Adrian did it out of the kindness of his heart. However ,that is a rather monumental song to be stepping aside from. Their brotherhood is admirable even if Janik was the adopted child of the modern Iron Maiden lineup. Janik is certainly up there with Bruce in regards to energy on stage!
Love Maiden! All of their stuff is good but my core Maiden rotation is pretty much Killers, Number, Piece and Powerslave with Live After Death on occasion. It's easily the best stuff.
I wish my '11 would have had the barrel truss rod adjustment, the first 6 months I had to adjust it at least 10 times (yes USA) ... but once it settled down, it's been pretty solid. I cant help but to wonder about this guys knowledge of Floyd Rose trems ... maybe he's only seen ones that are recessed ... IDK ... Love Adrian's playing!!!
Killers, Ides Of March, first solo. Perfect for me then because I was a fan of Michael Schenker. The rest is history,,,,Scorps and IM , IM and Saxon. Great memories.
You know what; I got the Chapman CAP10 because of Dave and Janick their Stratocasters and Adrian's San Dimas, believe it or not. - I started out with guitar-music/playing looking at these guys and the S-type was basically "thé guitar" to me. Though, I never really got one that was quite LIKE a Stratocaster for probably more than 18 years of playing, until I set my eyes on the CAP10, and now it's like my "Maiden" guitar. - I'm gonna sound like a commercial here, but it plays so well and sounds so good. It really got me closer to playing that kind of style that other guitars didn't "allow" me to. - But I will be honest that I was definitely also looking at the San Dimas as an option. And while in fact the cheaper model could've been had for less than a CAP10, it was just lacking some features I wanted, so... That's how that happened for me. :)
@@jbeebs1 Nave you seen the Iron Maiden documentary of the Airplane conversion and touring plane ? Here on youtube, interesting all the work that went into that.
I have never seen them live! I had an opportunity, but I wasted it because I wasn’t a big fan at the moment. Now they’re my favorite band and I just wanna see them live🥲
The interview was quite short as Lee focused on guitars and Iron Maiden. If he’d asked Adrian about fishing, the interview would have been 3 hours long! Lol
Ok so...try a little experiment . Grab any random person off the street and ask them if they know who EVH is, THEN do the same and ask them who Adrian Smith is......I'll wait! I think you know what the stats will be...honestly! And don't get me wrong...Adrian is one of my favorite guitarists and was mostly responsible for me picking up the guitar...Eddie didn't come to me until much later. Eddie will always be the most well known guitarist ever to play the strings and the only other milestone guitarist that comes close is Jimi!!
Christopher Sobek He was a tremendously influential guitar player but at the end of the day, VH is a one hit wonder for the average Earthling. No one knows who Eddie VanHalen is outside of North America and maybe Japan, and that’s mostly because the band never had successful singles outside the US except for Jump; and they hardly ever traveled outside the US. Even Depeche Mode is a bigger band than Van Halen.

I like how he starts his Iron Maiden career with a killer solo on Ides of March. That intro solo is epic.
This guy is so laid back and down to earth and still one of the greatest heavy metal guitarists ever....
Him and Dave Murray were my high school guitar heroes. Them along with Glenn/KK were just so influential to the metal scene.
Adrian Smith easily the best guitarist! His solos are amazing.
In maiden ypu mean obvious
Agreed, sir, 100%.
Adrian has been a favorite of mine for over 20 years. Amazing guitar player.

Really? I think they’re kind of boring.
@@Kevin.Kelly. Did you just call Iron Maiden boring?
there are LOTS of bands WAY better than maiden and ac/dc in hard rock and heavy metal like whitesnake...ufo..van halen...sammy hagar....
Love Adrian's solos in Maiden. Always so tasteful and fitting for the song.
Always thought the same, especially on Aces High and Flight of Icarus
his solos projects are also amazing check that
